  • The weekend was a busy one.
    Saturday, Belinda and I travelled north to the Grey Bruce Farmers Week where it was Sheep Day. We spoke to the audience about grief, something both Belinda and I carry every day.
    It took a toll, and on Sunday, I decided to sleep in.
    A decision I regret.
    A few frustrations, but the day eventually turned around.
    We only have 3 ewes LEFT TO LAMB!!

      @Kate Mroczka I’m relatively new watching Sandi’s vlog and while keeping up with the current vlogs I’ve been binging her older ones, so I know your comment was made a year ago but it’s such a good comment that I wanted to thank you for saying it. Sandi is way to hard on herself. She is such a caring person, does an excellent job with her sheep, with her incredibly full life, it hurts when I see her being so hard on herself. I’m glad you and others that replied to your comment reassure her that she is doing a wonderful job.

    When I had a ewe that retained her placenta the vet prescribed me a shot of Oxytocin. It caused extra contractions and she quickly passed the afterbirth. After that we did the round of antibiotics and things went perfectly.

    • @susantreibs6593
      @susantreibs6593 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think mental health needs to be talked about in farming and how to deal with it. The loss of income from low prices, crop loss, is hard. Farming is a business, and it comes with challenges. Having a community to share this with is good. Helping each other get through the tough times.

    • @ORSkie
      @ORSkie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@susantreibs6593 Yes.
      However, I think it's also not only loss or change (although those are definitely large contributors), it can also just be the stress of the unknown - will we get good enough crops harvested to feed everything, will we have to sell due to poor pasture from a drought, or will we be able to afford to buy enough feed, will our animals stay healthy or will something catch a deadly or communicable disease, etc; burnout; and the inability to influence factors that can completely turn the year upside down either financially or emotionally or both - everything from the weather to the global economy & regulation changes. Transportation issues - things like this year where lockdowns affected ability to ship animals across borders, etc.
      Truly, I think the healthiest farmer is one who has mastered the ability to handle stress well and discern where and when to address issues: as that saying goes, "help me to change the things I can, accept the things I can't, and have the wisdom to know the difference"... Doing that is a key for helping to maintain a balanced mindset (& for some including me, faith in God & prayer can be a mainstay, too).

    Thank you for saying grief isn’t just about death. I have been experiencing the grief of both of my grown children just walking away from my life. No problem, just zero time for me. I gave everything I had…too much maybe. Now I am alone 24/7. When needing them the most…nothing! The loss and grief is real. I taught school for 20 years, a mother, a wife, and now I do not know who I am. Grief in over my head.

      So sorry that was such a horrid year for you! I hope everyone is well. ❤ For me and my family 2018 was a hell year. My 3 year old nephew died in February. My dad went into the hospital from April-end of June and come home on life support via a trach. My mom and I took training so we could care for him. 4 days home we had to call the ambulance for me because I was in agony. Went home but then spent July-September in the hospital,my body on the verge of shutting down. Finally got diagnosed with another comorbidity to my chronic health issues. Then we had to take my dad off life support in November. That year was one I never wanna repeat! So I know what all of that does to one's mental health and how you feel like you're about to shatter.

    I am so glad for the care that you give, not just in farming, but in all aspects of life. Grief is a very big part of everyone's life. I lost all 3 of my mother figures (2 grandmothers and my mom) all in a 8 month period. This was 3 years ago and I'm still dealing with some issues that circle back to the loss of these 3 wonderful joys that were a part in making me the person I am today. You are an inspiration to others, so I would like to thank you for being who you are, and bringing this topic up. I am very positive that through your life experiences, and just how genuine you are, you were the perfect person to accomplish this topic. The only thing in this world most can rely on is change and grief can be a part of that change. Grief can affect big things or even the smallest thing. This morning I was folding laundry, and came across a washrag that was embroidered by my mom, that made all these feelings hit me. Just like that and boom your hit with all these emotions and have to sort through them. It's hard sometimes but I have learned that memories now can be comforting, along with knowing I am not the only person that struggles at times and seeing you being open about grief helps. Thank You!

    Udder is small on that ewe but she has a big belly. Have you done bounce testing before? If you get someone to hold her still, you stand behind and then firmly press up on her belly from underneath towards her back end. If she feels quite solid then she's in lamb, if she's really squishy then she's empty. Do the same with one of the obviously in lamb ones and also one you know has lambed to compare. I used this meathod to test a flock of 80 and got all but 2 correct. 🙂 My guess would be that she is in lamb but maybe not a great milker.

    I’ve been watching you for quite a while now, almost since you first started, and I’m not sure if your new supplements/feeding protocol is what’s making such a huge difference or what exactly it is, but this lambing group is definitely healthier all the way around compared to ones in the past!!!

    What helps most in giving a presentation is that YOU are the expert at what you do and how you do things. Describing your trial and errors and successes are unique to you. Once you convince yourself that you are the expert in your personal arena, there cannot be critical judgment which is what all of us fear. Basically, the underlying reason for any anticipated fear just doesn’t exist.

    Lambing is almost finished , you have done such a great job. My assessment of the ewe is, she may not be ready yet. I think she has one lamb in her.
    I looked at her three different times and it's a tough call, but I'll stick with she will be late.
    Good luck God bless. 🐑

    First. We are always hardest on ourselves. Be kind, rewind and take a breath. You are wonderful and do the best you can with what you have. Life is in real time, no do overs, but we can learn for next time. I personally think you were picked for the speaking role about mental health, because everyone needs to know the above is true and real and we are just human. Someone needed to hear you say the things you did. You did super awesome and remember we all love EWE!Hugs from Halifax

    Sandy, we all experience some level of intrepidation when it comes to public speaking; if someone doesn't, they are not normal. Thank you for being so candid about your grief and losses. You may not realize how helpful your honesty is for others that struggle too. Listening to you is like having a good friend. Bless your mess!

    Don't blame yourself for the 2 lambs that died just cause you slept in, you have worked so hard and if you didn't rest, you would endanger the whole flock. Look at all the successes you have had. Any chance next time you can get some help with the early mornings? You can get burned out.
    Love you Sandi!! You are such a good role model.

    Sandi, I raise Herefords, but have loved your page as when I was younger we raised sheep for 4-H. Thank you for sharing your struggles and triumphs. I have been dealing with grief the last two years after losing my dad to a farming accident. I have taken over the farm after his death and have struggled with the loss of his knowledge. Thank you for your page. I appreciate you showing the good, bad and the ugly! It’s therapeutic for me as I head into calving season.

    Wow! What a roller coaster! Every emotion today, fear, anger, frustration, heartbreak. At the end of the day when You see the pile of lambs making a "lamb mat" or racing back and forth and the miracle tubed lamb that is sooo pretty! I think I would still want to get up and do it all over again, but who knows. Mark's right...the bad stuff was only a tiny bit of the day.There was WAY more good stuff. That guessing sheep's vulva and bag look like she was never pregnant...but she's big! It may be more obvious tomorrow.

    Oh Sandi you have done such a great job. You have made me feel like I'm rite beside you every day . I think no I do cry way more than you do . You are a great mom to your human kids and you fill your heart with the fur baby kids. My grandson makes fun of me cuz I talk to you while watching the videos I tell him he just doesn't understand. If I were younger I would have a sheep farm like you do.... but at 60 years old I missed the boat on that career change. I was a commercial driver for 25 years and stopped when my grandson was born and went into towing and transport . Helped start a car hauling business drove a 10 car carhauler. But sure wish I had seen you and got into sheep instead. My better half (or thought it was) decided the grass was greener and kicked me to the curb, took me almost 10 years to pick myself up from living in my car but now have a house cleaning business but your sheep look so much better than livin this dream of cleaning toilets. Sandi I admire you so much and at this time in my life I thank you for letting me live thru you. God bless you and Marc (by the way he is a cutie patootie good catch there girlie) and your wonderful children the way they always come home to help. Much love to you ❤️ Barb from California.
    Ps: I was in Canada when I was a commercial driver I LOVED IT the people are nice your country is outstanding. I've always said if I could move anywhere it would be Canada. And my mom knows if I'm ever M.I.A. look in Canada for me.
    Keep up the great work love you to tears.

    The Momma you induced just appreciate all the love and rubbing you gave her. It was so sweet to see her head resting on your leg. This was a sad way to start Lamborghini but it seems like last time started the same way and then went great. Seeing you fix things, clean out that whole area with water and do all the little things you do helps me to do more. I don't think lambs could be loved more than by you. I see you get exausted, overwhelmed and just plain thinking that is all you can do and then you come back and just do more. I have 9 children and became a very poor single Mom. It seemed like a good night's sleep helped so much.

    Perhaps having near you a pic of the lamb you rescued from death’s door would give you inspiration in moments of frustration or when you’re just having a really crappy day, like just a little pick-me-up or something you can tell yourself, like hey, look at that one, I totally rocked saving that baby.

    I understand how you are feeling ... but it breaks my heart to hear you tearing yourself down ... I have learned that I need to redirect my thoughts (self-talk) when I start saying things like I should have, could have... the past is past and you can’t change it ... so changing to ‘empowering’ thoughts (I will, I can...) helps me tremendously! Blessings to you and all your family (two and four legged!)
