Played the Demo twice to completion! The game feels great, the battleflow is often as slow or as fast as it needs to be. Some units can feel broken, but you always have a counter.
Example: There's this time-challenge where there's a group of gladiators with 70 HP and heal 30 after being hit AND they're backed up by shamans that reduce your offense. It feels impossible, until you realize that a certain ability completely counters this strategy. It's honestly genius given it's pretty early that you encounter this enemy.
If I ever met a unit I couldn't beat... I'd just grab a bigger stick. Meet Alain and his posse!!! I think I remember that unit but I just brute forced my way through some of these things...
Don't avoid any fights.
Erick, you are like 10 minutes from 100k subscribers. I remember when I subscribed, you had maybe 10k. Good stuff man.
VANILLAWARE NEVER MISSES
Except for pc
I didnt liked Dragon's Crown but Odin Sphere and Muramasa are two of my favorite games
@@cleangoblin2021 It takes 8 hours to get past the opening for dragons crown. It makes the game really hard to get into. I been playing it again recently and I'm having a blast. But I get where your coming from.
Except for when they never Grand Knights History in the US which is likely what Unicorn Overlord is loosely based on.
@cleangoblin2021 Muramasa Rebirth and Odin Sphere Leifthrasir are definitely my absolute favorites from them, but Dragon's Crown is still great imo once you get used to it. It's essentially a beatemup, which I normally am not a fan of the genre but for some reason the formula just really vibes with me well on DC. My actual only complaint really about it was that it was too short to beat, excluding that one endless mode. I wish it had at least twice the amount of areas it had and same for the overall base story. 13 sentinels is fun but man it can be a lot to keep up with on the story how it's all broken up chronologically (even if that's by design of the story). Unicorn Overlord is already one of my favorite srpgs ever though it's just hitting all the right boxes for me
Woot! Congrats on 100k!! ❤
Congrats on 100k subs! Been following your channel for a while, awesome to see you finally hit a play button milestone!
I love this game. Auto-battle is straight up old school Ogre Battle games. Sure, Ogre Battle was sort of a niche series during the 16-bit era, but games like this have become rare in modern times. Especially games with a larger budget and wasn't made by an indie dev.
Congratulations for 100k subscribers, Landon. You deserve even more!!! High quality short and complete reviews.
he's like the rpg focused snesdrunk
100k . Congrats man!!.
Congrats to vanilla ware also , game looks fantastic
I got 13 Sentinels on your recommendation and I loved it. Gonna grab this one too. Don't let me down Erick!
Just play the demo if you want to know. You get basically the full game with a 7hr time limit. So plenty of time to know if it’s for you
It's worth it. I'm having a blast on it. Everything about it is done to near perfection, this isn't one to pass up on if you're any kind of vanillaware or rpg fan
@@drowningin I was too busy to play the demo, but I had faith this would be good. And I wasn't wrong :)
@@RoboBoddicker but how can you be too busy to play the demo, and not the game? The demo is the first 7 hours of the game, and it transfers over and gives you something in game if you transfer the save over. Not sure what I wasn’t paying attention, probably some parts for your army’s logo arms
@@drowningin I lead a very complicated and mysterious life
100K bro! Congrats!
Grats on 100k!
This game so far, is surprisingly addictive.
I really want to play this game. The artstyle and story alone look amazing to boot.
It even has a little bit of food porn like many other Atlus games. But alas, I do not possess a Switch or PS5.
I shall wait until it comes... if ever... to the PC.
It's a shame Vanillaware games don't come to PC...
I was hoping Microsoft's growing relationship with Sega might encourage more Windows PC ports (and it has), but still nothing from Vanillaware 😢
ryujinx my brother
How can you like JRPGs and not have a Switch? Strange.
If they do not come to PC, well, their loss. I'm hitting my 30, and now trying to solidify my game collections, gathering them to "one platform only". All the PS3 and Psvita games I bought a long time ago are gathering dust. And I don't have the money to invest in more and more consoles and their games. Same goes with Xenoblade Chronicle and Fire Emblem.
On PC, you can still play Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga. Similar game.
Big congrats on 100K subs homie! You deserve it 💪
Good review! And congrats on your 100k!!🎉❤
The art and character design make this a must play. Strategy RPG is just the icing on the cake.
damn man 100k! I subbed when you were barely hitting 25k, congrats!
It is really nice to see a SRPG in the vein of Ogre Battle/Soul Nomad (which doesn't get nearly enough appreciation) as opposed to the more typical Final Fantasy Tactics style. And the demo for this is seriously excellent if you are at all on the fence about the game.
Master fucking piece
100K, I think you had about 10K when I started watching. Congratulations man!!!
I just picked up my copy on the way home from work today! Been very excited, though still need to clear off some time since I'm in the middle of other games atm.
glad to see you take about this game
Amazing review as allways Erick!!
The game allows for different strategies to help win a battle, there is one during the demo in which the characters tell you that without a Magick user, defeating the hoplites would be very difficult, so I kept exploring, found a sellsword named Berenice, completed her sidequest that enabled a fort to be open, there I could recruit a warrior with a warhammer that is strong against heavyarmored units and with that plus a shaman that debuffed the enemies, I was able to conquer that fortified town in under 10 minutes and without having a Magick user.
it took 10 years, but the game simply did not stop evolving as it was getting made. Unicorn Overlord is a masterpiece
Yo brother, this game looks incredible. If I can put my crazy backlog on hold, I'll try the demo. And big congratulations on 100k!! Much love homie
would you really strictly recommend story difficulty for a newbie? I ask because my only experience with this is fire emblem awakening, and i recall my issue with the genre was that story mode was braindead, but anything above would beat my ass, I'm just wondering if medium is passable and I just need to grow some patience :')
Don't play story. The game play and tactical essence makes the game fun. I'd recommend tactical difficulty but if you're not confident then the second difficulty will be perfect
@@lastalive4809 Dont listen to this guy, play story and you can avoid the cancer gambit system and have a good time
I've never played this genre of game before and I'm playing on 'tactical' mode. It took some getting used to it, but now I'm so good, I feel like I could bump up to 'expert'. Once you get some units together that gel nicely and some good weapons, the game becomes a lot more manageable for newbies.
Yeah gonna pick up the game today, the demo was so fun and deep with the different units you can pair up in a platoon.
I played through the demo, and I loved it. I'm (hopefully) getting my copy in the mail on Monday ^_^ This scratches the same itch as Ogre Battle on the SNES does for me, which is a good thing.
Can't wait to play
Picked up the fancy edition a few hours ago. Will give it a shot in a few days. 🤗
This game looks really fun! I loved Ogre Battle and Ogre Battle 64 and it looks like the people at Vanillaware did as well. When I either finally can afford a PS5 or else the game comes to PC, I will definitely pick this up.
You mentioned Soul Nomad as another game that uses this battle system and I would add that Disciples 1 and 2 on PC also has this system, though it is in combination with an overworld that is like classic Heroes of Might and Magic.
On PC, you can still play Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga. Similar game.
@@ElBandito I didn't know about this one. Thanks!
how does replayability or post game look? does it look like dlc could be possible or does the game feel full enough without it?
From what I've read up on so far, the base story is in the 45-50hr range, that's just beelining through the main story. There is so much more to do as far as sidequests and other things to do that you'll absolutely want to do. It's gonna be considerably longer if you do everything else as well. I'm gonna estimate 100+hrs for sure
I was expecting it to be like Odin sphere
can't wait for another one like that they should remake Princess Crown imo
Gives a lot of Grand Kingdom vibes with the story/battle map. And tales of Hearts R had a similar conditional action map to influence the actions of your teammates. SUPER useful to keep ranged characters away from the enemy and ensure they just attacked from a decent range as long as they had the mp or ensure your healers would always heal a character before dying.
I get the same feeling, love my generic little dudes
Well, another step back for redemption reapers joining my collection.
Hooked by the demo, I couldn't control myself today.
I'll try Eric's mode, cos' i had the same issue with the tactics 😅
I got the Monarch Edition of this game and I'm glad I did. So far I'm loving the game. Only shame is that it released so close to FF7 Rebirth and I was too deep into that one to just jump into UO immediately.
Wasn't so sure about the automatic aspect of battles at first, but a few hours in and the game has won me over.
I knew it, and thanks to your review, Eric, I'm now totally sure:
The gameplay here is very similar to that of Aselia the Eternal and Seinarukana.
1. You have to build parties/platoons, geared towards a mid to long term objective during each battle.
2. For that reason, making a "scouting run" before actually committing to a path is better. That way, you'll know what is waiting for you (unless the enemies are spawned at random, which would be prettttty nasty indeed).
3. Because of the above reason, it is better to experiment with the skills of each unit, so you know which position is better for them and against what. And be open to unorthodox approaches, like putting a mage on the front for specific purposes.
4. I don't know how unit skills work in here (yet), but if they followed the Aseila/Seinarukana formula, each unit will have a set of Offensive, Defensive and Support skills, and pairing them with the "action conditions" in the right situations is the key to really succeed in this game.
I hope this game does well so more games of this style are made, since these type of strategy games are very cool to play.
Also, I recommend the other two games, Aselia the Eternal, and its sequel, Seinarukana. They are strategy visual novels with interesting stories and cool gameplay, though know that they are long and hard as nails (also, as proper VNs, with different endings, depending on heroines).
Still, very good games.
Those "Offensive - Defensive - Support" Trio is really Aselia trademark, isn't it? It's been a long time since I saw someone mentioned about Aselia. So Unicorn Overlord is kinda similar to Aselia? Interesting. Too bad Xuse (Aselia's Developer) now is already been closed down.
@@rigelothello709 Yeah, a real shame. Their games were actually very fun. Even the Seinarukana Gaiden (with the five "Cryst" girls as main heroines), which is a shooter, is actually fun, and the story was also pretty cool.
In that game, you "choose your route/heroine" by leveling them up and how many stages you clear with a specific character.
I still would've preferred the classic Aselia squad battle, as it was so good, and forced you to really plan ahead, but that requires more minute design and tuning of the enemy deployment, as well as testing their difficulty.
In that sense, Seinarukana was the perfect one, as it also included more bosses than the dragons and the occasional human all-rounder, and the maps got really wild.
But I guess they were kinda niche, and also their stories could get a little blotted on the non-battle parts.
However, if Unicorn Overload does well, we may end up getting more strategy games that use that basic system, which is not that hard to implement, since design-wise, it is a simple turn-based system, where the real deal is how you adjust the conditions before the automatic combat to gain the best advantage at the lowest cost, damage-wise.
This is my GOTY, its so fucking good
Love fire emblem so I think I might like this, it’s definitely different but I like strategy games. Can’t wait to try it but I’ll be honest, it does look overwhelming just looking at the menus.
Wow, this looks really good. I hope it will come out for PC later.
If 13 Sentinels is any indication, I wouldn’t hold my breath on a pc port. If you’re dead set on not playing it on console, you’ll probably have to go sailing.
the simple fact is it was worth the wait. I didn't know about it until about a month before it's release, so I wasn't stuck waiting that long, but this games consumed my life the past week or two since it released, and honestly, it's put Vanillaware on the radar for me, 110%. Absolutely Loving this game though.
I love that you can get into and win areas while being at a heavy level disadvantage. And while I love the gimmick of being able to do things in the over world that have an in-mission effect in Cornia, I don't see that same mechanic anywhere in the other kingdoms. Unless I am missing these things, it's a gimmick I wish the other nations had.
Cant wait to play it today, after playing through the demo multiple times expert was rough but only on a few bosses and early on cause its getting used to mechs. And the conditions settings make it real easy to make sure you are hitting who you want and if you want specific skills to be activated on certain times best example I can put is I'm running the unwavering lance and I want to use true thrust to counter those pesky scouts but looking at its damage i really dont want to use it unless there is a scout on the field so i just set it for only activate if the oppoment has one and target it. while if not just roll with assaulting lance cause in general it does more damage with the opportunity of acting again.
One thing i do gotta say managing gear is kind a pain for accessory slots since i can easily see there being way too many options and trying to find the one your looking for specifically.
I wanna pick it up when I can
After FF7 Rebirth, this is next on my plate. Can't wait!
The gambit system from FF12 returns! As someone who enjoyed the gambit system, it actually looks like fun. My main concern is that the game would be too easy to cheese like the original Ogre Battle.
In Ogre Battle your main character would get a random special ability. There was one ability that damaged every enemy on the screen and was slightly overpowered. You could then put all the strongest characters in your army together with your main character and just steamroll every enemy in the game with just one unit. In turn you would over level your party which just fed back into the snowball, effectively making the entire game trivial.
I hated the gambit system, but I'll put this game on storyu mode and ignore it
George Kamitani great artstyle
I was wondering about this game, but was disappointed when I learned that it wouldn't be on PC. wasn't sure if I would end up getting it or not but I think you've sold me on it pretty well. hopefully it runs decently on the switch!
On PC you can still play Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga. Similar game.
FYI it's playing great on the switch. We'll optimized and looks beautiful
Great vid, holy cow though, you sound like the genie when he’s explaining to Aladdin that he can’t bring people back from the dead.
I can't bring people back from the dead. It's not a pretty picture. I don't like doing it!
It's a RT/TB hybrid.
Looking very Ogre Battle 64... which also had unfairly powerful bosses. Oh well, I'll probably wait a bit before trying it.
This has Dragon Force feeling (Sega Saturn - Sega CS Division - who also created Skies of Arcadia, another hall of fame game) one of the best of all time. Miss those Harpies. Cmon Sega, do it.
Just wished to have more control of the character's actions. Kinda feels like a Scopely clone.
Vanillaware make the most unique styles of games out there. Another hit from them. 7 hours in and I’m loving this game so far!!
I bit it and got the monarch edition. Aint no regrets here.
Please be good please be good please be good
I am easily overwhelmed so is reassuring you can brute force it.
Waiting for fan translation on this one
I'm still on the fence with this one..I love fire emblem and games of that style but i'm just not sure if i could deal with the auto-battle..hmmm
Agree, it is the urgent rpg question of 2024! Is unicorn the best game of the year? Already?? Can we call it this early! I haven’t even played it yet, but I feel like I have!!😮
This game is a fucking masterpiece i fucking love this game!!!! Its been along time since ive seen a game like this and oh god its soooo goood
I thought the FFXII “gambit” system was perfect for this kind of game. In fact, it felt more appropriate here than it did in FFXII. I loved being able to “program” my characters to act in optimized ways, but a lot of that stuff makes sense to me. For others it can be overwhelming, but 90% of the game is won on unit composition, so most of it can be safely ignored.
I have downloaded the demo and tried it.....at the first, i was a little disoriented by the fact that the battle wasn't playable. And i learned later this system who looks like the gambits of FFXII, when you program skills and conditions and it was cool !
I pre ordered the collectors edtion on ps5 and it's so nice i can't force myself to open it
This game is making me go insane and i love it lol
excuse me, I want to ask if the game language could be changed between English and Japanese at will.
I think you can, the text may not change but the dialogue might
I was super excited for this one. But I wasn't expexting not being in control in the fight. It really threw me off. But I'll have to give it a second chance later.
Yay gambits!!
it is the gambit system from FFXII
Yeah once I learned that i refunded the order lol
Looks nice when it comes to mobile i will play it can't play games like this on a ps5
I really liked the demo. The story has not impressed me so far, but the gameplay feels very polished
give the story some time. it will come together
I was gonna wait on this.. Thing is i picked up 13 Sentinels again recently not to mention the demo and i realized i simply couldn’t.. Im not worried tho.. There are plenty more big releases coming up this year
I wish it was on Steam
I love this ❤❤❤❤❤
The Lead Artist and Developer George Kamatani put his own Money on this game when his team ran out of Funding!
Please reward the Man and his Staff! They deserve the Cash.
Atlus doesn't hate you any more, kid? Or how is it you had a review ready for the day of release?
Why the hell is this not on Steam? I'll have to get the switch version or I can't play it.
The switch version runs buttery smooth and looks and feels great in handheld (OG Switch for me). I got the physical copy (I'm a big physical collector) and couldn't be happier with it so far. I'm about 10hrs in and it's very good. I reccomend playing on the 3rd difficulty level
I really like it. But I also really liked ogre battle 64
this game like disciples mix with fire emblem real time battle i dig it
I completely disagree on the conditions for battle. You can be as in depth as you want or not. It's fine if you leave it to lady luck, but it's not a bad thing to allow the players that want to control to that level the ability to do so. You can do it or not as you want, so why say it's a bad thing to allow people who want to do that the ability to do so.
While I understand not liking a story point or game mechanic you are forced to interact with, I don't understand hating a mechanic that is entirely optional and only serves to make someone else's enjoyment greater.
guys i really hope yu get the change to get the collectors because it has a legit card game included with 230 cards, upto 4 players with 30-120min play time
Great game but it needs NG+. Maybe something they can add in at some point.
I think I prefer the turn-based tactical RPGs. Bought Fire Emblem Engage today actually.
I can see this one getting lots of rule 34 animations made of it.
Well, there’s only a few art I’ve seen posted but nothing like that
why no pc version D:
I also think this game just unnecessarily complex. Like the conditioning thing is good if they fully commit on RTS. For they make it half turn based it just feel weird. Like why do they need adding so much complexity? Control on menu also weird in switch. Often i miss click when i want to reposition and adjust their skill. If they keep it more simple this game is very fun actually.
I actually kinda hope the battle mechanic would be like devil survivor. I think it is more fun and simple. Or maybe just like diofield chronicles. That game is underrated anyway. However, anything as long as not FFT like battle mechanic, it is still acceptable for me and I will try to learn to love it. Oh and one thing i actuall quite liking the story. It just like how the fire emblem shadow dragon story especially in the beginning.
Not comming for PC lol oO ...what a misstake from the devs lol. So much money missing lol
I didnt like that the characters dont look like in dragons crown, the gama is amazing tho.
This looks awesome. I will wait for PC (Steam) release.
Don`t wait it may never come, just emulate it with Switch emulator.
@@arthurp3ndrag0n I must be so out of it, I forgot I had Yuzu installed already (for Pokemon Sword).
@@Sight-Beyond-Sight glad to remind you, even though Yuzu is dead, their latest version (4176) plays the game at 60 fps.
10 years to develop the game, 10 seconds to develop the name
except PC?!?!? :/
Of course is on PC: it's on Switch. -ahem-MULATORS!
I wanted action combat
Looks good. Unfortunately, the localization changing characters' personalities is a deal breaker for me. Hopefully it'll have a good fan translation someday.
I'm worried the name "Unicorn Overlord" will limit sales quite a bit.
We might be used to hearing it now, but even I thought it was a joke the first time I heard of it.
And going further back, I never played Odin Sphere because it conjured images of pinball or "Odama" (on Gamecube) in my mind 😂
Same, This studio is amazing in everything but naming sense lol.
There's so many games these days you can't find original names anymore
Like Tactics Ogre was any better
@electricant55 At least it tells you it's a Tactics game... But is that a great argument anyway? How well did Tactics Ogre sell?
Back in those days, selling 100k copies of a JRPG was a success. With how much game development costs today, that would be poor sales for anything but an indie game.
@@corey2232 well yeah but the worse UO sells the better
not releasing game for pc is a terrible decision
Game is good but there is no challenge even on highest difficulty.
I'll give it another try, because after about 1.5 hours I put it down. Seemed too generic. Not trashy enough lmao!!! If i'm being honest!! lol
Finished it yesterday. Such a gem. From the start till the finish it kept interesting and engaging. Hopefully Fire Emblem will go this direction some day.
I think they're trying to jump on the autobattler trend. I personally like the game play of those games, so for me it really depends on how complex the team building is. Because what I have seen thus far hasn't been that complex.
The micro managing in this game is insane.
