Radient Historia is one of my ultimate favourite video games. That is partly because the backtracking is smooth instead of grinding for hours to get to that point again.
Star Ocean 2 remaster/remake is very very good to your time. many quality of life features that could be in every rpg ever to make them all better games!
I looooooooooooved Star ocean 2 back in the day. The remake definitely helps with QoL but it did also kinda make me realize that I'm quite happy with how good at story-telling and presentation rpgs are nowadays.
8:26 An 'Ys'y way, you say? My nom would be Front Mission 4. 30 hours max even if you grind on the optional training missions, best of the series so far. If anything it felt like it was resolved a bit too fast considering you're commanding two separate teams of Wanzer pilots. That's only 15 story missions per campaign. Would've liked a final one where you can control both teams.
I play Brave Dungeon and Kemco games. For Brave Dungeon I find it avoiding all things that would be annoying. It has not much of a story, barely any npcs, no random encounter but the kind of monsters you fight are random, difficulty settings that can be changed any time even in dungeons and the pay off is balanced with each setting, the first 4 dungeons are optional, etc. What I like the most about it is that when returning back to town the game automatically restores your party's health AND replenishes all your items back to the highest amount you had before entering the dungeon. And it's all for free.
The issue with Nier Replicanct that it kind of doesn't respect your time on doing side quests; the rewards almost always suck to the point there is no point of doing them.
Steal from every boss. Every boss has amazing equipable items. I honestly didn't have to buy armor or weapons as long as I kept stealing from the bosses. Definitely made the game easier
Thank you for this video - a totally underrated topic, especially, if you have a regular job and a family. That is, if game development counts as a regular job in the first place...
my mistake was playing it directly after the first game, and was burnt out not an hour into the game, been 2 years i should revisit... but my backlog keeps growing hahaha
Believe me if you want to have platinum on nier replicant you will haaaaate your life yes you need 20 hours to finish the game but you will need another 60 hours to platinum it Ohhh and I don’t know if you missed this game or you never played it but hyxze force is an amazing game it a psp exclusive
I have Shadow Hearts 2 sitting in my collection for years and really want to play it but unfortunately I still haven't found the best way to do so. On the PS2 it's too blurry and dark and I can't record it either. Funny, how I play Nier Replicant right now. Does it respect the time? Honestly, too much running back and forth for my taste AND I could have refrained from fighting Louise three times. The third time was too my crying on my end.
You should try the ps2 emulator on PC. If you have the disc you can just make a back-up and play that with some enhancement but without remastered there's limits to making ps2 games look better due to how they were made (480i)
Nice to see tales of symphonia on this list. It was my first tales game. Really wanted to play the second but it seems it will forever be stuck on the wii.
Thanks for the list! Because of work, wife and kids. Also other obligations. I usually only get an hour or two of late gaming in each day. Currently trying to take on the Xenoblade series slowly.
Wish tales of heart R could be given to main consoles. Arise isn't long it just drags as the story isn't good. Graces the combo system is what makes it the best. And on repeat play it expects you to be able to speed run it which I did while also doing all the missions and sub quests. Xillia 2 sucks with the debt system as it directly hampers your gameplay same as the missions. Symphonia I feel takes forever. Don't understand how it's people's favorite guess it's just like bersteria and the only game people played in tales
i think tales of eternia could fit the best game to starters on tales series. it's cute, the music is great, the characters are great (at least Meredy is wonderfully great!) and battle system is good too, and the pacing is very good at least for me
@@ElsweyrDiego well I find xillia the best in terms of balance. The grade system doesn't exist so the achievements are permeant letting repeat play be easier. Same with the cast all being very balanced for their skills letting people know how to use each of them as Jude and co all have stand out designs on top of defining skills in combat that was made very well. Best for gameplay is graces if you want to just play a game and it can be beaten quickly just playing it forward without grinding as the game doesn't expect you to grind much.
I hope paper Mario ttyd remaster does the same thing as Mario rpg and adds a post game hard boss mode. It would be epic. Shining refrain resonance I feel didn't waste my time as I was grinding thinking it mattered. You only need a certain level and you can blitz the game. Only issue is the one mission the guys need to fight. That was bad gameplay design.
@@sdtrawick you think bonetail is hard? Some people beat that in the prologue. Also Hard doesn't mean big numbers or damage. It's also how to play the puzzle. Bug fable and the post game of Mario rpg do this well with playing the system more like a puzzle than unga bunga. Aside the final boss in rpg that was easy
@@sdtrawickGetting to Bonetail is harder than beating him. We want a bonus boss who is difficult all on his own even if you're an expert player. Maybe have Super Luigi as a 'second quest' too.
the stories for Nier are exceptionally well done. It tells the story from different perspectives, but also doesn't follow the traditional way of storytelling.
Because it's boring and overrated, the music will put you to sleep and the game is easy, like toddler easy. The only good thing about nier automata is 2B's R34 that's some good stuff 😂. You really think the game would be as popular if it was some random guy, nope.
Nier has always been an incredibly niche game made for an incredibly niche audience. The original game has a cult fanbase that loved it for all its story and tiny unique intricacies. Replicabt 2.0 doesn't really include anything that would make it more appealing than the original besides the combat, and is more a remake for the preexisting fans😅. You're definitely a part of the norm when you say you can't get into it.
You can definitely finish BoF4 quickly. I rushed the game and cheesed the last boss by constantly swapping out team mates since i got to him in the mid 30s
When you said long ass hell games while showing p5r I felt that 🤣 I'm currently at 135hrs but it feels like I spent longer, I'm at Mementos bottom now which is somewhat near the end so I'm checking what I can play next after finishing it.
What stops me of Playing Persona 5 is this, I don't want to spend more than 100 hundred hours in a game, I only do It when I know I will really like it
I started tales of hearts R and played for maybe 5+ hours And stopped because the game didn't have an English dub Too much reading for all that dialog with Japanese dub I like to at least listen to the conversations and do something else irl But ill go back to it one day
Great video but I disagree with Tales of Graces F combat being complicated, it's one of the least complicated combat system in the whole series... the thing with the game it's that it is challenging; probably the hardest and most skill based tales game.
Hearts R is fun but the localization was god awful. Some characters names were changed for no reason and a lot of the dialogue doesn't match what the characters really said.
I LOVED Nier. But I have to disagree with the respecting your time part. About 3 playthroughs of the second half to see all the endings - added scenes help of course.) A LOT of sidequests which, while built into the feel of the story are still numerous and at times tedius, and you have to collect EVERY WEAPON to get the final ending. Plus play through the first half then AGAIN for something special. It's a lot. It's a lot of GREAT, but still a lot.
I love Shadow Hearts 2... but no game that has random encounters and then puts the reduced encounter item at nearly the end of endgame respects your time. Earthbound was 1994. Lufia 2 was 1995. No excuse in 2004. And again, the game even has a crude mitigation... it just won't let you access it until the game is basically over.
It is a much better game but it is iterative and more of the same, I enjoyed all of the new monsters and weapons but being honest I don't think it may change your mind if you didn't like 2.
Nier Replicant? Great game, love it. But grinding out those weapon materials necessary for the later endings (and in a Yoko Taro game, that's necessary to get the full story) and repeating the last 3rd of the game 3 times is NOT what I'd call respecting my time. Oh and it had the same fetch questing that Automata had. Then there's farming for some materials... literal farming on an 18-24 hour real time clock that if it wasn't for system time manipulating, would be a time waste beyond all time wastes. Nier Replicant should be near the top of a list of games that do not respect your time.
100% completion of octopath traveler 2 takes over 100 hours, not exactly a good example of JRPGs that "respect your time", even though that's not a very high priority on my list, grinding is a Part of RPG game design, always has been and hopefully always will be
