    This knife is worth every penny and is more than just a knife! Words can’t explain but when I first handled mine & deploying and retracting it for the first time, I felt the heart, blood, sweat , tears and workmanship/care & countless hours that went into this knife design/build. The action is absolutely better than I imagined and I was already expecting it to be perfect. The switch/trigger to the action of the blade is absolutely unexplainable. So smooth and precise, smooth and clean break on the switch. Couldn’t stop smiling, it’s therapeutic fidgeting with it. A must have for any knife enthusiast! This is one bada$$ knife , keeper for life. Will open it up one day but too busy enjoying playing with it at the moment.

    Good engineering is taking a complex problem and solving it with a simple, elegant solution. I'm in awe of this design. Amazing work!

    This would be level of engineering prowess that I would expect to see if Patek Philippe was to get into knife making. Mr. Hawk, you have raised the bar to it’s true & proper noble apex. Your name should become the gold standard in the industry against which all others are judged. And as if this achievement wasn’t a crowning one, in the true spirit of dauntless Yankee ingenuity, the subsequent generations of your superlative knives promise to defy the illusory mandate of irreducible complexity by streamlining this already elegant system even further - delivering equivalent function & improved durability with significantly fewer components. Stunning. A watershed moment in the history of the craft.

      Exactly. Peerless, not even close to any competition.
      I heard these are $1k to 1.8k, that seems like an absolute steal in my opinion, but then again a grand seiko is also a genius mechanism and can be had for $6k. Difference is their knives are handmade

    At first it seemed like it was a complicated mechanism but it's actually a pretty simple design. I like the way you actually put an insert where the screws go for the clip, handle and button plus loc-tite it unlike other manufacturers that just stick a screw into a thin piece of metal or worse, a softer material.

    As a machinist, I have a real appreciation for things like this. Saying the mechanism is a work of art would be an insulting understatement. It is truly a thing of beauty beyond words.
    The first time I watched the video, my mouth hung, gaped open and I instantaneously wanted one. I have since watched this at least a half-dozen more times and still cannot get over what I'm seeing.
    As much as I want one, I'm concerned over issues of legality. Unless there was a configuration that offered a spring "assist" on the open action (or even just enough to release the lock), I may not be able to get one, short of moving to another state.

    How come the stop pin doesnt get wedged so tight against the stop plate that operation of the button gets difficult when you go to retract the blade? It looks like the stop plate "arm" is a sort of cantilevered spring that is exerting a lot of force on the stop pin.

    • @benclark8495
      @benclark8495 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I understand of the design, no. The spring hook is simply/mainly there to keep tension (very little actual needed) on the blade lock. There's not really a way for the spring hook or the pin it presses on to "wear". There's no friction, very little at least.

    • @blademaker25
      @blademaker25  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The material is 440c. The ball will be the last thing to wear out. I used to ship with an extra ball, but only because I thought people would loose them when cleaning. The ball has been redesigned, but is still 440c.

  • @SephDraconic00

    Good video! I just wonder how much pressure and wear will effect the small pins and the ball detent over time?

    • @blademaker25
      @blademaker25  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The small pins have minimal pressure on them. The only pressure on them is from your thumb. When pushing the button, the last .050" your pushing on the pins to unlock the knife. The ball lock is an 1/8" 440C ball, its not going to wear out ;)

  • @wgollyhorn
    @wgollyhorn 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You saying that little ball bearing is the only thing keeping the knife open when stabbing it into something? Other OTF designs seem much more robust

    • @blademaker25
      @blademaker25  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A sphere is one of them strongest shapes. In this case it's a 440C ball. There's no way you would be able to destroy that ball in this knife. The frame will expand and give out before that ball is crushed or destroyed. If you think of a lever, like whats in most otfs, they can bend and be crushed. Or more likely the point at which they pivot would be the weakest link.

    Q?
    Have you ever done any "stress" tests on your designs?
    In other words, if you were to stab say a piece of plywood, for instance, how much force would it require to force the blade back into the handle? Similarly, how much sideways stress can the blade take before the handle breaking etc? This may sound extreme, but when you spend big cash for a well engineered (obviously) knife, it would be good to know what you are getting and the capabilities of the tool you are buying.
    No disrespect.

    So after a full day of research ive basically gathered info stating that G+G are the D/A OTF Gods of the game ...would this be a fair assessment? Or am i being mislead

    WOW, brilliant design! Gotta save my pennies. Just curious why the trip plate is not anodized (assuming by the video it is aluminum…I could be wrong)? If it is aluminum something like ALUMINUM HARDCOAT ANODIZING/PTFE might be a good finish. Nice slick and ware resistant. Again, if it is SS please ignore my comments!😅
    I also like that you say, “no lube”! I manufacture precision, XY stages for semiconductor inspection equipment, and everyone wants to lube it. Lube collects dust and turns into lapping compound.
    I’m just so impressed that this is more than a knife, it’s engineering, genius….. and man jewelry! LOL! And that’s why you’re the first and last name of OTFs. Thanks for the video!

      The version in this video is stainless steel, but I later started making them out of 7075 and doing a hard anodizing. :)
