  • There are things about OTF knives, specifically double action versions, that prevent people from buying them. Gavin Hawk has addressed these issues and made what should be considered the new benchmark for all OTF automatic knives. Let's break it all down and see what he's done.

    Love the knife . Love how they solved the problem of the lockup that nobody would ever use it to stab into a trash can . The sand shark 🦈 is probably the best lock to this day . The piranha lock up mechanism is really great . Not the blade firmness but the locking strength . The infidel stamp internals are garbage. Love the internals of the dead lock , but I personally think the microtech internals are tried and true simple the sears are beefy , the slide is solid. The newer Dirac slide is my favorite internal slide . If microtech used 2 sears to lock could take the blade wobble out .

    When these first came out I was thinking microtech might try to buy this patent from the hawks. Luckily for microtech, and anyone else making otf's, gavin only sells the custom versions for now. I've had my name come up on the dead lock list for the last 6 months but can't justify spending over 1k direct on one, but if they sell this design to a production company, I'll be all over it and doubt I'd ever carry an ultratech again.

    Another set of thoughts for those opposed to the "cost" of this knife. Brands like Microtech offer customs as well. Try getting a double action out the front from Microtech, or Marfione custom knives with a titanium frame, titanium switch, titanium pocket clip, carbon fiber scales, a high end blade steel, AND a hand ground blade by the maker himself....for around $1,000. You'll pay at LEAST $3,000 and you'll still have some blade wiggle

    I'm not sure some blade play in a OTF is a bad thing for reliable lock up. I'd buy a version if priced in the $5-600 range. I live in Texas and can legally carry any knife I want, as long as I have my CHL and handgun, as the law Jim mentions has changed. My EDC is a Microtech Cipher OTF...what did the version in your vid sell for, Jim?

  • @Biblicalgiants
    @Biblicalgiants 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Those knives have to have some play in them. The only looseness that ever bugged me on the microtech is the vertical give that comes when cutting stuff.

    • @JimSkeltonKnives
      @JimSkeltonKnives  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      biblical giants Zero play. As you can see demonstrated over and over in the video, and the entire reason for this knife's creation.

    • @blademaker25
      @blademaker25 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Technically you're correct. All otf's have to have play in them for the blade to travel back and forth. But when it's locked up, there is no need for play. The problem with other otf designs is they're not able to fully lock the knife up. That's where the deadlock comes in. The deadlock locks the knife solid when open and closed

  • @Jef
    @Jef 8 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    As the spring loses elasticity, will the wedge start failing to lock in? I know it takes thousands and thousands of firings, but the way it's described that may become an issue years down the road.

    • @JimSkeltonKnives
      @JimSkeltonKnives  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't see it being any issue. It's a tiny spring and it's function is simply to allow the blade into that "wedge". It doesn't actually create the lockup.

    • @Jef
      @Jef 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jim Skelton
      Yea, hard to describe over text, but I was referring to the spring that pushes the blade forward. You described that as having a stopping point, and if the spring fires too hard, it will force it past said point, causing permanent lock up. I was thinking the opposite. Suppose the spring becomes too weak to get the blade into that locking point. Therefore the blade can't be pushed into the wedge far enough, so it would fail to fully deploy. Guess I will have to wait for someone to disassemble and get a full look and the innards. Thanks for the reply :)

    • @blademaker25
      @blademaker25 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Hey Jeff,
      So there are two main firing springs that propel the blade back and forth. And they are both well within there recommended spring load. Which is a problem on a lot of automatic knives, more so on side openers. To get the power and rotation, they go past the recommended travel of the spring. Generally a knife company is happy if a spring lasts 10,000 cycles. In OTFs the springs are generally within there recommended travel. Although the harder they fire, the more stress on the springs, and more likely that the springs are going past there recommended travel, and they will break. We prefer the lighter spring tension for two reasons, first its easier to operate, and second the springs will last longer. We've done extensive tests with opening and closing, and the springs have gone well over 28,000 times, and I haven't broke on yet. Some point soon I'll be doing a full take down video showing how everything works, and in that I will talk about some other solutions we've come up with for making the springs last. I've heard a lot of complaints about springs breaking in Microtech knives, and that is because of the way the springs attach.
      Just for clarification, when a spring is used within its recommended travel, the spring will last a very, very long time, without loosing it's memory. When you go past the recommended travel the spring will break. I've even seen charts from spring companies that break down how many times a spring can be cycled depending on how much of the travel is being used. When looking at a chart like this, you'll see that as you get closer to, or past the recommended travel, the cycles/lifetime of the spring shrink exponentially.
      Also one last side note, when an double action otf is open or closed, the spring is at rest. Verses a side opening auto, that when closed the spring is at it's maximum deflection, which can cause memory loss in the spring, making the knife open slower over time. Which is why some people store their automatics in the open position. That's not an issue with double action otf knives.

    • @Jef
      @Jef 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Gavin Hawk
      And Jim said you can't explain stuff the non engineering types can't understand ;) Appreciate the info. I do still wonder though, since you are already using a light spring, it wouldn't take much 'memory loss' for it to stop performing well. I mentioned I know it takes thousands and thousands of firings to reach such a point, just the weakness is what made me inquire. Since you will be offering a harder firing spring, it would in my mind, make sense to get that one, over the weak one. You said you went 28k firings with no breaking, how about failure to lock in? Was there any issue with it being too weak to fully deploy and get solid lock up?

    • @blademaker25
      @blademaker25 8 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      It's a little early to talk about our in house testing, but I will say that we didn't have any issues with the springs, and no memory loss whats so ever. And we were still getting a solid lock.
      Weak is a relative word, but the springs would be almost identical, but different lengths. When you're within the engineered limits of the spring, the spring will last forever. As you get closer and closer to the limits of the spring, the life of the spring goes down drastically. When I start offering a stronger spring set up, there will need to be testing to make sure it will last. With all of that being said, things break. If anything ever breaks on any knife I make, I fix it. In this case, if a spring broke, or started to get weaker, I'd just send you a new one, and you could replace it very easily.

    most states not care if you carry one or not. unless its new york or cali i would say. Iv movied around quite a bit. and i have always carried my halo5 otf. I have never once had a problem with the law. Even when they ask to see it. I have always got it back, and more times then not they really liked it. I live in maryland now. Now i do have a carry permit, but autos and otf's are illegal. That being said iv been stoped a few times now. iv never had a problem. great video

    beautiful knives....however it seems to me when your talking marfione microtechs.....the customs are about 1,000.00 more when all they do is anodize some parts and do some extra polishing????...you can say there hand ground....but lots of 250.oo fixed blades are all hand ground....so thats not a reason to jack up the price.....dont get me wrong at the end of the day they are beautiful knives

    Wow just amazing stuff! The blade play of OTF knives is the reason I was never interested in them. Problem solved!

    In Texas with the passing of HB1935 as of September 1, 2017 we will be able to carry daggers, dirks, Bowies, etc... so now an auto opener with a double edge will be legal.

    Beautiful workmanship, excellent design, aesthetically pleasing and fairly priced. I have many fixed blades and folders which are tools for cutting (at work, camping, skinning etc.) but for me the philosophy of use (as Nutnfancy would put it) for this knife and indeed any out-the-front knife has only one purpose. Hurting people. And for that reason..."you're fired"...;)

    • @blademaker25
      @blademaker25 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This OTF is meant to be used! There are all other OTF knives, then there is this one. . .don't judge this knife based on other knives ;)

    • @sputumtube
      @sputumtube 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gavin Hawk
      Sorry Gavin, I mean no disrespect but I can't get past the fact that ANY out the front knife has only one purpose. I have many knives, machete's, axes etc, each one of which has a practical use which doesn't involve maiming or killing anyone. OTF blades are like Italian switchblades - made only to hurt people.

    • @jpnmn
      @jpnmn 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Explain how in the world an OTF's deployment method makes it solely for "hurting people"? What about knives with the wave feature? Assuming those are scary and deadly too. I worked on an antenna team where we were all bought benchmade OTFs because of how convenient they were to use, we weren't hurting or killing anyone hundreds of feet up in the air-only putting them to work when we needed them in one handed situations. I carry my microtech every now and then as well for cable work....

    • @JimSkeltonKnives
      @JimSkeltonKnives  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      An OTF deployment is simply that... a deployment method. Just as a flipper or a Balisong... it's just a different way of revealing the blade. No more or less dangerous looking than any other style.

    • @blademaker25
      @blademaker25 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I can see how someone could come to the conclusion that an otf is only meant for stabbing/killing, when they aren't reliable, high maintenance, and have a wobbly blade. And are generally thought of as a toy. But they still have a sharp edge, and a sharp edge, no matter how it's deployed is useful beyond killing. Besides all of the disadvantages that most OTFs have, they still have the advantage of being one hand opening, one hand closing. All of the disadvantages inherent in other OTF's have finally been solved with ours. Also, I'd like to point out, a fixed blade is the best killing knife. Automatics we're not designed for killing, I've read a lot of patents, and never have they mentioned killing. Instead they talk about ease of use. When It comes to killing, simple and reliable is best, and a typical OTF is not reliable, and a terrible choice for killing. Its unfortunate that Hollywood has given automatic knives a bad name.

    Very very interesting mechanism. Do they make one that's priced in line with a Combat Troodon (my daily carry knife)?
    Also, just as an FYI, you can *own* double edged knives, aka "dirks and daggers" in Texas. What you can't do is carry them in public. I'm still peeved that the legislation was in place last year to get rid of the last vestiges of the idiotic knife laws on the books, but was tabled at the last second. Hopefully it'll get passed in the '17 legislative session.

    • @JimSkeltonKnives
      @JimSkeltonKnives  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Terry Faugno I wouldn't doubt that someday there could be a production version that will be more budget friendly. As to Texas, yeah, we can own a dagger blade and not carry, but for me, if I can't or won't carry a particular knife, I won't bother to buy it.

  • @corbins123
    @corbins123 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Jim dual edge is ownable in Texas it isn't carriable outside of your house unless to a car you own due to people buying them in person and not online so as long as it's your car and you use it in your car you can carry it but it's not legal as an edc i live near Houston and I own throwing blades that by law are dual blades as long as I'm in my yard I can throw them the only knife you can't absolutely own is a gravity knife that paratroopers use

    $1,000 to $1,800 is average price range. outstanding product and an incredible knife review. however this knife is exponentially out of my price range. I'll pay 400$ or less all day for good knives but u less something is made of gold I can't spend what I would on a used car for a knife. still an amazing product by an outstanding company and definitely worth collection.

    Pretty fucking cool. I've owned Microtech double-action OTF knives in the past, but once the novelty had worn off, I found flippers to be just as fast, and a bit less illegal to carry... though shitty Canadian knife laws are vague enough that individual cops might see a flipper as legal or illegal, depending on their views and personal disposition. But... if OTF autos were fine to carry, I'd still want to own a Microtech double-action; and the Halo single-action, even if it's a bit impractical, is fucking awesome. These Hawk OTF's are amazing. I didn't think the Microtech double-action was a design that could be improved upon, but the Hawks have apparently engineered a better, more solid double-action auto. Nice... if only I could carry one without getting arrested...
