I love your videos, sir. You are an excellent teacher. Thorough and efficient and to the point. Its too bad you aren't in the school system. The children would have learned from you.
Hey Frisco, awesome job your doing and I can certainly appreciate the job your accomplishing, I rebuilt a 1981 bayliner 2270 explorer from front to back, and watching your videos bring back so many memories..just can't help but chuckle everytime you say your tired of this lol ! your a hoot, but don't give up and think of the finished product..it will be better then new. I live up in Canada on Vancouver Island in British Columbia.

hats off to you and your skill. I was lucky enough to come across a 97 Sea Ray 175 and from what I hear it is Sea Rays first boat that is all fiberglass (no wood stringers). I have poked around on it and found no wood in the hull, liner or floor. Except the hatch for the skis. I feel very lucky. Not so on my old 72 cruisers antigua with balsa wood in between 2 layers of fiberglass for the hull, pure mush!
Also just a note on all your grinding- a stiff wire wheel on the grinder will provide an excellent keyed surface without all the un-eveness caused by grinding with much less dust. It also maintains the structural integrity by reducing the amount of material removed. Again, a super job and very neat.
wow seeing all that dust brings back terrible memories I spent 2 weeks in 95 deg days grinding I made a misstake by not whereing a suit and face mask I was sick for a week I learned the hard way to where protection. looks great
Man I know its been a while since you made these videos but I really appreciate it. Ive always wondered about how to replace stringers and the engine compartment. Ive learned alot !...makes me wish I didn't sell my 28' Chris Craft Stinger now It had rot in a the engine compartment.
thanks so much for putting these videos up. I've learned so much, your a professional. I'm going to tackle my 88 grew, bow rider with outboard any info would be great.
Nice work. I give you a lot of credit. I don't know where you get the time for all this. I would have sold the motor and drive and cut the boat up and put it in the dumpster. I hope the former owner gave you some money back on it. Cheers. Mark
All that extra fiberglass makes your boat heavier than it was from the factory the Coastguard approved it at that weight for seating only as many people as is it was designed so that it won't float as high with a full compliment of fuel and such!!!!
Do the stringers really need to be scribed into the hull? Normally we cut them shy and then apply a thixotropic Polyester or Epoxy structural filler and this doubles up as a bed and fillet at the same time in addition to sealing the bottom of the timber. It also saves a lot of Labour and time trying to match every inch of curvature. You job is neat and perfect but maybe too perfect for what it needs to be. Love the videos.
Maybe this is a dumb question, but im stuck on the thought of how am i going to get the correct angle to place the stringers on the hull without there being a gap between the stringer and the hull. How would i get the right degree? i have a '89 sea ray bow rider that needs a whole new floor and stringer replacement.
have you attempted your floor yet? I have an 88 sea ray sorrento that needs a floor. Frisco's videos make me think I can do it but he is an animal.. I'm afraid to start. just wondering if you started, how similar is the transom, etc to his newer boat?
wondering you thoughts on using treated wood for stringers my logic is would last longer be worth the extra money same goes with the decking also did you do anything to the underside of the deck?
Hey I am about to start my boat project in about a month. I was wondering if that pone u bought for the outside stringers were treated or non treated. Also, I have been looking for a recap on how much product u went through / how much the total restoration cost, but I haven't been able to find it yet.I am very thankful for your videos!
Hey frisco I've got an 89 sea ray with with some soft spots on the floor, it has an outboard set-up is an outboard easier or harder to replace the transom? thanks
not sure what your asking? but just took the gas tank out and the stringers don't look to bad might drill a couple of holes just to be safe. On my boat the floor is pretty solid, but it is water logged. so I'm just going to cut open some access panel's to pull out the bad foam and fix the floor.
Why did nobody help you?? Or did they off camera? If you had to do it all yourself then maybe they should ride the shore side of the next ride. LOL Great work
This has been a very interesting video . I've been a boater all of my adult life . I seriously admire your effort but wouldn't it had been easier to just sue the guy who sold you the boat or just salvage the engine ? Sorry, don't mean to be negative, but whats the Boat worth ? It's a 20 year old 22 ft Bow Rider. Was it really worth saving ??
+Gary Webber I guess to some of us its not a matter of " is it worth saving " its the fact that some of us would rather build there rides while some just buy new ones. Kinda like the guys that show up with the new $60,000 corvette to a car show expecting a trophy while the rest of us built our cars from the ground up from a rusty shell.
Gary, you disappoint me... easier how? Sue the guy who solid the boat... that's costs money... just salvage the engine? OK, I get the idea. So he buys a non-rotted hull... that costs money!!! So he's putting in the time... whether that be at his full-time job to earn the money to spend on a new hull or he spends the time and builds in himself. And if you've been watching from the beginning, Jay makes the point, "I guess if we all build boats like this, they'd all cost over a million dollars." Also, this boat will now last decades!!! Asides from the rott under the deck, the rest of the boat seemed like it was in great shape. Doesn't look like there's a scratch on the outer hull and this is a classic Sea Ray so it has all the bells and whistles that a mid-range sport and rec craft has to offer. The engine and out-drive looked amazing. This guy is going to have such an awesome and reliable boat. Great job, Jay!

U r one brave man sir! Thanks for sharing your trials and tribulations.
I love your videos, sir. You are an excellent teacher. Thorough and efficient and to the point. Its too bad you aren't in the school system. The children would have learned from you.
You have really made my job easier by your videos I'm doing a 25 ft sea ray thank you very much for your time and patience putting everything together

wow your an artist when I comes to boats. great job man wow.
Thank you
String lines are a Carpenter's best friend, a center line and some side to sides and you have references to measure from

awesome job can't wait for next weekends video or weekday update
For the stringers I would have used exterior grade LVLs. The glue or epoxy is such you can use them under water as is.
You can run string line from center front to center back and get all your measurements from it

Great Job...
Hello @FriscoBoater's Garage what kind of putty did you use at the joints of the stringers, Peanut butter or pl glue?

@MrSquinker
The high quality exterior from Lowes.B/C sanded. I picked though the pile and got the best.

How much would you say it would cost for me to do just my transom rebuild on a boat very similar to this one
Hey frisco I've got an 89 sea ray with with some soft spots on the floor, it has an outboard set-up is an outboard easier or harder to replace the transom? thanks
I'm doing a similar one grew with outboard way easier I think.
+Jeremiah Jarvis do you know of or have a nice write up in it??
not sure what your asking? but just took the gas tank out and the stringers don't look to bad might drill a couple of holes just to be safe. On my boat the floor is pretty solid, but it is water logged. so I'm just going to cut open some access panel's to pull out the bad foam and fix the floor.
That looks like my rinker
You have to level the boat and block up the keel to put in the stringers or the boat will porpoise.
I'm remodeling my whole floor on my 1968 invader 15'. How much resins will i need to do the whole flooring?
If you are doing the deck you should to the stringers. I used 13 gallons on my CVX
They tried to get me to go epoxy for stringer and transom, but cost too much. You think if I go poly fir everything would that be okay?
Shouldn't the boat be off the trailer? Don't the bunk boards push up the area where the stringers go?
Hey Frisco,This is John from ky. Where do you get your supplies ? I’ve looked online and local.
The voids in the plywood.
I know this is an old video but just wondering if you had much of an issue with the ply warping before you got them mounted and layered up?
what kinda wood your using Marine bases plywood are just normal plywood?
what size plywood did you use? 1/2 inch?
Cheap box fan does wonders.
@garciarosa100
It was level. The hull is over a half inch thick too.
I used non treated. I never did one of those videos. Maybe I should
Why did nobody help you?? Or did they off camera? If you had to do it all yourself then maybe they should ride the shore side of the next ride. LOL
Great work
@2k1civex
I have not made it that far yet. I probably will use some sort of chemical.
Are you alive now a days?
Front feul
Oh yea, let’s fucking put WOOD back where it rotted out. Use plastic composite type .
@gordie495
Thanks Gordie. I got your emails. Great pictures.
