@@LeonPaxton I used to skate Grind Kings like 20+ years ago and they were awesome. Still have them in decent condition as well! Haven't tried any of the new inverted trucks yet but might pick up a set of Slappys for an Andy Anderson Baby Heron I'm considering buying...
@@LeonPaxton I’m worried I can’t see how tight they are or if they would be coming loose. But other than that I like the concept. Indy Mids seem to be an odd one though. They seem to have to have inverted kingpins to retain any sort of grind clearance while being lower.
@@RikRiorikI feel the same about seeing the bolt and nut, especially on these. They felt like they were binding when turning sharply so I switched bushings but the king in is shorted or the bushings were bigger and that made turning harder. I shaved the barrel bushing down to get it looser but it still wasn’t as loose as I like. I finally gave up. They’re sitting on the bench for now.
Killing it on the big board, crook to boardslide was so sick!! I really love AF1s with hard bushings but these might help me relearn front feebles lol. I was formerly ALLCAPS3D, you inspired me to start posting some vids. Just want to say thanks for taking the time Leon, take care broski!!
I'm on AF1s on hard bushings. Still get some much wheel bite. Just downsized to 52mms, so see how we go. I'm on Indy super hards (yellow). What bushings you got?
@@sqidz I'm on the Ace hard bushings, 54mm F4's on 8.5" popsicle setup and not much wheelbite honestly but when I rode a big egg with AF1 66's I was biting often. I think the hard bushings really add stability when popping or flipping but Ace's can still carve sharp and break loose. Really love the combo, you can try waxing your wheelwells where it bites. That's a reason I love decks with carved out wheelwells, I just lose a little pinch on crooks. There is always some give or take in the skate madness lol
Thanks dude, that trick actually felt so good! I'm running the AF1 hollows with hard bushings on my main set up and they're sick too 👌🏼 Oh sick man, keep it up! Glad I could inspire 🙌🏼
Switched to Slappys recently, been really liking them! Contrary to most trucks they have a lot of turn but not much lean, this is weird at first but means you get as much turn as an Indy or Thunder but not nearly as much wheelbite. I always loved indys but hated how much they would wheelbite unless I rode risers, with the slappys I ride 56mm wheels, no risers and have no issues with wheelbite. Loving them so far!
I ended up grabbing some 9.5 slappys and honestly it would have been awesome to grab the 10s but for the life of me I couldn’t find them. Great vid as usual.
i have some stage 5 indy 149s (mid-late '80s) with grindking inverted kingpins, the clearance is crazy. the top of the kingpin is below the exposed part of the axle in the center of the hangar. the bushings are pretty wore out, but they skate well.
What boards did you use those on in the 80s? I legit didn't realize they made 149's back in the day. I only remember 159 and 169 options. I used 159's on all of my setups back then. When you skate them now on modern decks, do you drill the deck or swap out the baseplate? Pretty awesome that they're still going!
@@CH-nz6ys i didn't get them until mid-'90s, secondhand. they were too big for the boards i was riding at the time and wrong bolt holes, but i held onto them. sometimes would put them on a thrashed board and just drilled holes in the board to fit them. i drilled the plates kinda recently. the inner corners on one truck are broken, they were like that when i got them, but there is enough of the hole there that the bolts will still hold. i wasn't 100% if they were stage 5 or 6, but from what i've seen they appear to be 5s. i have a box full of gear from the last 30 years, i posted a video going through it if it's something you'd care to check out.
Leon! I bought some santa cruz speed wheel Bullets 66mm. Cant truly recommend them enough. Awesome skinny big wheels for 9-10” decks. They work wonderful with a 1/8” riser on the indy 4s and looks much more proportional compared to 50mm small wheels. They are still pretty hard, so im not sure they make a difference regarding pebbles :D
I've got them on my anatomy of a wide boy n I love them. I found they were pretty loose and there's only so far you can tighten the inverted kingpin, so I switched out to the hard slappy bushings n it made a big difference
Got em for the new heroin Mutator and they're great. Once the hollow forged come in a 9.5 I'm grabbing them for my regular setup. Great video as always! That slap crook to board looked so fun! I gotta go learn that
Yeah! I put the 48mm snot wide boys on too to kinda complete the set. It's a blast and a lot more skateable than I thought. It's great to pass around at the park and see what people can do on it. @@LeonPaxton
I really want to give inverted kingpins a try. Have a lot of trouble with getting stuck on smith grinds so i hope that will help. I always have to push the smith so hard that i had alot of bad slams because of it...
I almost got some Slappy inverted hollows, but got the classics instead because I read several reviews mention the kingpin nut loosening. Did you have any issues with the trucks loosening? Also, I noticed, even though your trucks looked brand new, the washer was already digging in and splitting the bushing. I had that issue, too. It seems the Slappy bushings have a slightly bigger diameter. I might try some flat washers for the top bushing, or maybe some different bushings. But, I like how they turn.
I'm hearing a lot about that problem at the moment but haven't felt any troubles so far. I usually like my trucks loose so I might not even realise if it does happen 🤷🏽♂ I have noticed that but it doesn't seem to continue chipping the bushings away but yeah flat washers could definitely help this!
@LeonPaxton all inverted kingpins seem to do it to some degree (the indy ones less so). The other problem with inverted kingpins is that the excess threads on your kingpin will run into your deck limiting how far you can tighten your trucks. Not a problem for everyone, but if you are heavier/taller or just like tighter trucks you will be replacing bushings more often. Once they smush or collapse a little you can't get your truck tight enough. If you run into this problem get harder bushings and keep spares in your skate bag.
Did you say those trucks have the most clearance? So which trucks have the lightest of them all + the most clearance? I wish they had titaniums + the clearance
I was wondering if anyone had done this and how they work in the Slappy trucks. I ride bones hard in Ventures and the combo is great. No issues for you with them in the Slappys?
Hry Leon, how do yo mesure the angle? Looks like d2 mid light, destructo with bones hard bushings grinds like a dream, incerted kiping to, I messure the wb of destructo and is the same as indy, but 52mm high
So hard to tell apart Ace, Indy and , slappy trucks now. They have that tubular axle. Like ventures and krux are obvious to tell apart but these Brands (slappy and ace ) are giving Indy a run for its money
What's your thoughts on inverted kingpin trucks?
Big fan- makes so much sense.
