I have had craftsman openers ever since I was born, first opener was a black sears with red lines. It still runs to this day and ran my 16x7 insulated with broken springs for 4 years easily including it shutting on tables and chairs over the years. Every house in my neighborhood has almost all the original gray sears still working and all of the new craftsman’s put in still work great. A house that burnt down still has original craftsman openers used every day. I am highly impressed by the new CMX openers. I had the belt drive when they first started selling at Lowe’s and it’s quiet, smooth and reliable. I highly recommend craftsman and can’t wait for the side mount openers they will come out with one day. Glad you made this video cause craftsman is looked over too much. I personally like craftsman remotes better than chamberlain and the square rails aren’t super bad they seem to have gotten tougher

Craftsman is the only chamberlain corporation garage door opener I’d use. Like you mentioned in the video it still partly has the look that they’re known for. The only thing that I dislike with these craftsman openers is the lens, they vibrate and I wish they didn’t use such cheap plastic for that. Only opener I’d use in retail at the moment.

Hello Mr. Garage guy . Hey you stole my avatar I've been going by grgguy for at least 15 years now. But that's neither here nor there is it. I agree with your assessment on the retail version or the only retail motor you say you'll put in. I'm right there with you. You couldn't pay me to put in a genie at this point, not the retail stuff. Hell no ! I'm extremely partial to LiftMaster garage door openers and their gate openers.. I couldn't agree with you more though. I won't put anything in it besides it. Not retail no way.

As the 982 is not available any more, I wonder if the 982 was a unicorn motor in the Craftsman lineup, or if any of their other opener motors (like the 772) are comparable in built quality and strength.

Hello! Yes the 772 shares the same DNA as the 982. The only difference is that the 772 has no battery backup. So if you don't live in a state that requires it you should be good to go.

Santiago, you about have me sold on this particular model. My concern: In Phoenix - the heat (especially in a garage) eats lead-acid batteries for breakfast.... its ugly. Would this be recommendable in a hi-heat region? What happens when the battery burns out? Sorry, not familiar with battery back-ups, but I assume it gives you a lift or two when power goes out... Thanks! Great material.

    • @sosgds
      @sosgds  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hello! That is a great question. Here in Southern California we also get tremendous temperature due to heat. And my years of experience I've never seen a garage door motor battery backup build up with residue or blow up due to the heat. Of course Arizona is a lot hotter. Yet I don't think you would have a problem with the battery backup because they usually don't last longer than 2 to 3 years, thus it would have to be replaced in a relatively short amount of time.

Thank you (Santiago) for your videos.... i would have hired you if you worked in my area of Texas, but instead, after a local contractor quoted me $2500 ! for a new garage door opener installed.... (Chamberlain Elite series)... even after admitting it was only an hour of labor for them... i purchased the LAST Craftsman cmxeocg982 (made by Chamberlain) available from Lowe's nationwide. My only complaint was the packaging was so poor that the factory could not even close the box fully before stapling... all because the power cord was not contained, so it was on top of the red metal chassis... such that when I opened the box, the red metal was dented during shipping or factory.
I would have returned it for a replacement, but there aren't any more available anywhere, as far as I can tell... and I don't like the newer Chamberlain models as well.

Hey it's your favorite fellow garage door installer/troller here. It's been a minute. I wanted to start out by saying I'm really looking forward to that trade show video that you put out. I've got it for saved for later and I fully intend on watching that and I want to thank you for putting that up. I didn't get to go to any of the trade shows for the last couple years. I used to enjoy them so much. I'm hoping you answer you asked some pointed questions to somebody's distributors. Put them on the spot. You know what I'm saying. I'm hoping that's what you did. I'm really looking forward to that video..
Next I want to say that I agree with you on the Craftsman opener. It's a great product line. I do have one problem. I liked it better when they included the three-piece T shaped rail which was almost identical to the rail they provide to us the professionals. It was the same except you had to join it in those two places.. What they include now with that stamped metal box rail I get why they're doing it. They're saving money. However, the carriage that comes with the box rail I can live without that thing comes right off if you know what you're doing. Any kind of abnormal inadvertent pressure I've seen them pop right off. Everything else you said I completely agree with. I think you nailed it. I just had that one caveat with the carriage for the stamped metal box rail I think they should do something about that carriage I really do. I think it's going to bite them in the ass eventually... All right sir. I look forward to more videos from you. I think you do a great job here. I really do. Thank you sir

Hey Tommy! Thank you for the feedback. I really appreciate your comments. The video about the WASA trade show is not intense but I did have fun there. And you gave me some great ideas for the next show I attend.
Additionally, I agree with you about the trolley carriage to the Craftsman/Chamberlain motors. They are not the best. The 3 piece T-Rail was a better option but we can't have it all as they say.
I appreciate your support. I try to come from a sincere place when I make these videos. I don't profess to know it all. I simply share what I have encountered and hope it helps others. Stay safe out there my friend.

I've got 32 years experience here in the garage door buis. I've been doing it since I'm 18 years old.. I could not imagine doing anything else.. I think of all the trades we got the best one. Well keep that to ourselves though. The only problem with it is every guy that comes in thinks he can run his own show.. So he'll start up his own place and then to get his foot in the door. He'll go with some initially low prices which drives all the prices down for everybody cuz we all got to match them. Ultimately they never last. Damage is done. Prices have plummeted.. at least for our labor. I know prices across the board have shot through the roof lately but.. Mom, I'm really talking about our labor. We need to be allowed to make money. A Craftsman is a Chamberlain is a Lift-Master is Chamberlain is a Craftsman.
Take the motor covers off them and they are identical in every way. Repair and replacement parts are all the same numbers. Remote controls and keyless pads are all interchangeable.
Chamberlains are usually the least expensive.
Lift-Master has the best light covers that don't rattle followed by Chamberlain covers and then Craftsman, which have always been the worst. Models with the permanent LED light are OK.
Reuse the T-rail whenever possible. Although it may not be as quiet as the square rail. Just remove back stopper bolt and replace when battery is installed.
