I found a way to power scale with character development / strenght of will: 0: depressed / supressed individual without their own drive (lowest point of any character, zombies of moria) 1: average citizen concerned with their own needs (they have a will to live at least) 2: idividual who has a passion, helps others with that (Nojiko, Genzo) 3: characters with a dream, not yet acted on (any strawhat before joining luffy) 4: a character starting to act on their dream. Developing principles that align with that dream and following them (any whacky decision that is seemingly self destructing as often seen in one piece and deeply respected by luffy, like zoro letting himself get captured, shushu the dog fighting a giant lion to protect its owerns store) 5: someone worthy of being called a captain by inspiring others to join them on their journey (luffy in east blue) 6: a display of willpower so brutal it changes reality aka Haki 7: A character who has precicely decided on what is just and what is to be punished. This character acts on their branch of justice and is powerful enough to not abandon it if in conflict. (Any marine admiral) 8: A Yonko. Someone who has a vision of an ideal state of the world. This individual works towards changing the world and building it to create their utopia. (Kaido, Big Mom, Luffy) You can see that fights are won by dismanteling the beliefs of your opponent. Like Luffy showed Arlong that his strenght in the East Blue was based on Namis maps. This broke the logic in Arlongs fishman supiriority. Luffy exposed Arlongs inconsistency in relying on a human. Therefore in an instance Arlong fell from a level 5 - 7 character to a mere level 3 character. While Luffy was a level 5 character throuout East Blue. I would love your opinion!
Hmmm ok I don’t hate this AT ALL. This is power scaling that breaks the 4th wall and isn’t based on in universe feats but instead based on character writing and vision of how the story plays out. It’s power scaling based on story/world impact instead of how hard they can punch. I’d be interested in seeing this develop a bit more!
This was a fun presentation, but what about Oars's Zombie? Or the Zombies as a whole? Also, not to spoil anything, but you might have a fun time making a part 2 for this in a year or so.
It makes me think of Ocean's Dream Arc, when the Straw Hats have to deal with the loss of their memories. It's a filler arc so I don't know if you've seen it but if not you should take a look
Yesss so much. I try to keep to the canon content bc I don't want people being like "that's filler" in the comments but yes literally included this in my script
@@Trying-secret-time Do not skip G7 filler arc, it's a master piece. You also won't regret watching other fillers if you don't have "i will die if i don't proceed watching main plot" decease like I had lol
@@Trying-secret-time yes, most of the times. after catching up, you should go back and watch them. after catching up, i craved more one piece so i watched all the movies as well
Just want to say I'm glad I'm seeing more videos intertwining philosophy and One Piece. Think its ripe for exploration, yet so few videos cover it. Great videos!
I had another video planned this week and then I thought of this and was like, gottta do it. This is a niche that needs to be filled. If you have any ideas hit me with em and I’ll do it!
Clicked on the thumbnail because of Nico Robin (I'm a simple man after all, what can I say) but stayed for the phenomenal video. Keep it up, this was a really interesting philosophical breakdown!
I'm in the camp of the teleporter killing you and creating a clone of yourself with your memories. It's you without being you. So really it only matters to you yourself (the original) that you died. But as far as the clone is aware, and everyone else, it's the same you that stepped into the teleporter. 🤖
That’s exactly what always freaks me out. That new version of you and everyone that knows you wouldn’t be able to tell but YOU the you that stepped in would cease to exist. It’s crazy
nice introspect of fictional characters with super varying identities. love this about one piece.. it's depth allows for input from such varying angles, you got a new sub, keep doing your thing!!
Wait… if remembering an experience means I’m the same person who experienced it, what if I don’t remember an experience? What if I have a “false” memory? Does that mean I’m a different person than the one who experienced it? Also: wouldn’t Thriller Bark refute this idea? Shadows are recognizable as the person, but they don’t have their memories, and personally identify with their zombie bodies
Omg it’s like you read my notes! Thriller bark was going to be a big focus of this video but I ended up realizing I wanted to repurpose it for a bigger video on the concept of self and anime, and moved it out. You sniped that. But for your first question, I think it’s a matter of continuity. You’re still the same person because you’ve had some semblance of continuity, even if it’s a false memory or you don’t remember something. Unfortunately, the impact of memory on the self is as thin as it is thick. Our memory is what defines us, so in the sense that memory is fragile and changing, our concept of self is too. The self isn’t rigid or flexible, it’s shifting like the Sanda. Never stagnate, but not of a form in perpetual fluid motion either.
I think this videos title should be something like “John Locke’s theory of Personal Identity explained using one piece.” Because if you really wanted to explore how one piece tackles ideas of personal identity they are far more interesting and complex characters. Such as Vegapunk literally being several people but also one person, or Ace’s complete rejection of the parts of his identity tied to his father, or Yamato’s entire dynamic with “being Oden”
This is a great thought and actually something I’m working on! You sniped me. I used “personal identity” because it’s Locke’s phrasing and I’ve got a different idea on how to frame that video. Thank you for this comment!
I mean isn't John Locke whole point is to try to debunk the idea of soul? but soul do exist in One Piece, so I dont think it is proper to used Locke frame work to explain the world of One Piece
well, the cartesian idea of one. Descartes used "soul" to mean self, not in a religious or metaphysical way like in one piece. but in a way where Descartes accepted Aristotle's theory that the soul is the form of the body. he believed in mind-body dualism.
