If I learned anything from the movies it's that when someone's dead you have to do CPR by vigorously punching them in the chest while yelling "Nooo damn it, come back!!!"
Ok so heres how it happened as I understood it They were travelling faster than light while they were in hyperlight (which in theory is, that their time is going backwards but the causal of things still play out as normal time. This is how Relativity plays out. For them, time is still running forward but an outside observer sees their time running backwards) So the 1st Solis arrived there, sent out a distress signal, which was picked up by the 2nd Solis (which was still in backwards time, inside the hyperlight). The difference of the one outside of the hyperlight and the one inside it is 2 hours. In essence it was like "they arrived there 2 hrs before they were actually there". Its like sending a telephone call from the future them to be picked up by their past themselves. So back to the normal time. The first Solis is intact but then Emiliana was killed as per the guy's statement. Which made him alive and Emiliana dead in that ship. The second Solis arrived but for some reason it exploded and as protocol, the computer sent them out into space. Emiliana saves herself and her Phillip and went aboard the first Solis where only Philip was alive. Since the 2 Philips are in the same time line, only the one in normal time is awake and the other one was in a state of superposition (dead and alive at the same time) Only when she killed the future Philip did time collapse to create the reality in which both people were alive There was no time loop but a "wrinkle in time". When the first Solis was supposed to have a part of it exploded (which killed Emiliana and kept Philip alive) the second Solis picked up the same event in time but played out a different future. In that future, Emiliana and Philip survived while their ship did not. The future Philip (alive) and the present Philip (in superposition) existed on the same timeline. As long as the future Philip is alive, the other Philip will be in a state of superposition because his version of the future should be different from the other. Only when the future Philip was killed that the wrinkle it time was ironed out. Its as if the other future did not exist at all.
Amazing analysis, but one thing that irks me, I think the explosion that killed the original Emilia, was the second ship arriving, the beacon from that event would still hit a ship in "negative" time, or behind time - So, it's a weird scenario, and I could be wrong, but I'd love to think I'm right.
Okay, this is my best guess at what is going on here... someone tell me if I'm even close. I think it was the broken down ship that actually traveled in time. That is why Phil was shocked to hear the date and time. Emeliana's 2 hour difference, however, lines up pretty well with the "current" time. So, that means the first ship had a malfunction that not only brought them out of FTL but also sent them back in time. They send out a signal which by pure coincidence is picked up by themselves prior to breaking down, etc. That earlier version picks up the signal and heads to the broken down ship. When they get into proximity of the other ship, the same matter in/near the same space takes effect with the older ship (the broken down one) getting "priority". This causes the younger ship to malfunction and explode... but not before their pods can be ejected by the computer. The explosion kills the older Emeliana which wakes the younger one up in the pod. She rescues her Phil. Once on the ship it becomes clear what has happened. When she goes to do repairs she discovers that the ship isn't going anywhere. They are pretty much stranded there for what will probably be an extremely long time. This leaves Emeliana with a hard choice. Leaving her Phil in a coma state isn't realistic. It wastes resources and... well, he has no hope of ever recovering as long as the older Phil is still near and alive. And we know she doesn't see the older Phil as being "her" Phil by the way she comforts him on his loss of "his" Emeliana. So, she makes the hard choice to kill him so she can get her Phil back. Once she does that, they basically just live out their lives on the ship until hopefully they some day get rescued. Btw, there is no time "loop" or anything like that. They basically just created a kind of rewrite of the timeline. Some might see it as a paradox. However, if you view time travel as just you moving from your reality to an alternate past reality, then altering yourself in that past would have no actual effect on you personally... it would just alter the normal course of the alternate reality version of you.
No, the malfunction sent the ship, still one ship at this point, forward in time, leaving itself behind in the current timeline. The forward in time version of the ship, of course, got there early, whereupon it issued a distress call. Which is picked up by themselves, only 2 hours behind. Brilliant. But of course that can't be right if he loved her in one reality but not the other. I think the story mixes some premises. In the end it falls back on the multiverse, which is too easy in a sci-fi plot. So I guess, the two ships from similar but different universes happened to be in the same place, 'at the same time', or within 2 hours, which is enough to cause a temporal dichotomy. One that causes chips to explode and people to sort of die. How was it that necrosis and cell death didn't occur? What exactly was keeping his heart from beating again? All the components of the ship are intact, yet apparently complicated electronics malfunction to the point of blowing your ship up.. Meh. Still loved it. It takes quality sci-fi to get a nerd like me to break out the intellect to poke holes in it. Can't believe I'm just now discovering these people.
This was incredible! Only 6 mins in felt like I’d been watching for hours, was so caught up in the plot. That’s genius! To be able to capture attention, create suspense and tell a whole story in 16:30 is amazing. Excellent short!
I am just so impressed by this. I mean wow not a major studio or anything like that? And the acting, Yay! Makes such a difference when everyone is fully committed. Thank you for that amazing escape. I'd love another adventure or continuing adventure with these two.
Actually it's not hime. The whole plot is based on the feeling of "otherness" they feel for each other. Somehow she knew it was the unconscious Phillip her comrade. And that is the most uncanny and reassuring feeling of this movie, that we're connected to each other beneath the molecular surface.
Holy shit. It's not time travel, it's dimension-hopping! Into a universe that isn't perfectly time-aligned. The realities converse and make a new reality. Their clothes are different. The dead versions weren't romantically involved like the two who survived in the end. Her Philip was experiencing the Schrodinger's cat experiment, 'alive but not', for why he was in stasis and his vitals couldn't be read.
You're so spot on. It's Dimension-hopping. I've had dreams of doing this and in one dream I worked for a secret government organization called Quantum Dynamics. We were trying to experiment with time travel but accidently found dimension travel instead. Weird thing about this is, I googled said company and it actually exists. It's a government contractor since 2002, and part of their funding goes to a group called Dimensions International. Mind blown! They claim they're in communications, but now I'm really freaked out.
Ffs, I listened to that line about 15 times and couldn't figure out what the hell he was saying. Then I found your comment and when I listened to it again I could hear it perfectly. Go figure. Anyway, thanks! ✌️
I think the movie shows that humans can be even colder and more calculating than the machines. Everyone is wondering why Ada is such a lame voice assistant, but actually Ada was more human than Emilianna giving her a warning before she sent Philip into the space. And looking how Emilianna hugs him in the end, I am pretty sure she would take another scary rational decision, if the situation changes. Philip is never safe with this girl.
@@Klm49, I agree with you. Also, it looked like she had a relationship with her version, but not the other, so they may have come from alternate universes with different possibilities. If that were the case, then her decision was a no-brainer.
Not alternate universes but different times I think. They were relying on the old time cop rule of not being in the same place at the same time. She was from the past where they were together. He was from the future when they had split. I’m really surprised he didn’t guard himself a little better.
"He will find out", they are in a loop. He just found out himself. The guy that just woke up doesn't know, and eventually he will find out just before he is blown out into space.
This is absolutely one of the best films I have ever watched in my entire life. I was hooked right from the beginning - the scenery, storytelling, the bravery and skill in saving Maeda and getting to the ship - Emiliana's acting was fantastic. The incredible Sci-fi twist of two realities being unable to co-exist and the dreadful decision she made. This is simply an absolute masterpiece!!!
@@Alex-ev6lu no no, that's why she said "what ever the other Amelia did, i'm sorry" and he said "he will find out". Because it is a cycle. That's also why they can't be at the same place in time, he is from the future while they came from the past. If you understand the theory of light speed this actually makes sense (if we disregard that it's impossible for object with mas to move at the speed or faster than the speed of light)
It reminds me of the scene in Sunshine when
Kapa finds out that the captain of the previous ship survived ans is now on their ship.
Same feelings!
What a situation, you arrive answering your own distress signal only to find only one of you can truely exist. Excellent actors playing the frightening situation so well. Bravo 👏👏👏

everyfuckin time people say for some short film how it looks amazing and when somebody makes it to a feature all those fuckin people get disappointed...
It’s amazing how much more imaginative your productions are than the swill that’s in theaters these days. Congratulations on the efforts of your hard work.
This is so good that it could actually be a viable TV show, whether as a serious SciFi story, or just the misadventures of a daydreamer, I think it has the potential to be a great series! I loved it, not only because my youngest daughter is called Melody, who is a daydreamer ("Focus, Melody!?") and I would love her to follow in my footsteps and play guitar, but also because when she was 2 yrs old and we got her a toy kitchen and she would ask "what would you like?" to which the only reply she would accept was "soup". Above all, I loved this, because the acting, timing, directing, production, FX and humour were absolutely spot on!
@@DaLab_Gaming yeah but after the acceleration you can see the ship traveling at the same speed throughout the duration of getting to Phil, it didn't pick up any more speed. So we can conclude after the initial thrust, it already reach it's top speed and didn't need more thrust.
@@michaelbrandon1222 Acceleration can only happen during a burn. When the burn is completed, the ship can only travel at a constant velocity. The ship's "top speed" would depend on how much fuel it had for its thrusters. More fuel means a longer burn, which means more acceleration, which means a higher final velocity.
Why is no-one talking about this: When Amelia tries to be affectionate with Philip he says that in his timeline him and Amelia don’t get along. And by the airlock Amelia says something about “Whatever she did, I’m sorry”, and he answers “He’s going to find out”. That has the be the reason that they don’t get along, right? So I think he finds out (maybe even kills Amelia because of it), and then the cycle repeats?
I just found "DUST" and I kid you not the past 2 1/2 hrs I've been binge watching all these videos. Some I truly wish were full movies amazing quality!
I thought this was going to end with them sending out a distress signal and the woman going out on a space walk to try and fix things, starting the loop all over again :)
Nah, not possible, because that means the loops would all take place in this specific reality, meaning that the bodies, duplicate ship debris, and everything else would end up piling up after a while, however millions of loops that would take, and would break the cycle. So, no, not a time loop, as that wouldn't be feasible.
You missed the point about "we will be here for a very long time". Their ship is designed for a crew of two. It is unlikely to be able to support a third individual indefinitely. Sooner or later they would have to decide who will die.
It's a rescue mission, she came to answer a distress beacon. There are at least 2 docking bays. This is a big ship, and should be able to handle at least one more person, or it would have been a terrible rescue.
She did what she had to -- as long as the other version of him survived, the ship was in flux between the two time lines with neither one able to assert. Once he is dead they have a chance to survive.
@@Taurineg I think you missed the whole point of civil discussion and art interpretation - everyone can understand their own way, honey. Don't be so condescending
@@Taurineg In a loop yes- or time lines, same diff. - but @Silvadel Shaladin is correct IMHO; like the card game "War" eventually one person has all the cards.... We suddenly understand she wants to synch up with some other him. "he will find out" is a huge "I'll be back" hint and it tells us they are both aware of previous (and/or future?) time loops but not necessarily the same ones: "...whatever she did, I'm sorry". Also there seems to be (at least) 3 time/place lines/loops converged in this story because of uniform color changes plus there was no "two same-person time and place" anomaly like there was for the guy - alive Ada tells us, but appearing dead.
Wow. The opening scene with the escape pods floating out in space over the planet was very cool. If you have ever been in an MRI machine, you know how it feels to be in something like that. I did not know i was claustrophobic till i had to go into one. Like a coffin! I lasted about 20 seconds and had to abort. No can do. Thank God they make open side ones now that are not nearly as bad. You have not experienced unreasoning fear till you see a wall 2" from your face for an extended period. The nurse told me 1 out of 5 refuse to go in them by this unreasoning fear. Stranger still, mostly men more than women are affected. I had a job as a foreman taking asbestos off steam generators at a nuclear power plant and had a man freak out because he had on a full paper suit and respirator. I had to hold him down to keep him from ripping his mask off in a confined space full of dust. He completely lost it. We rushed him up the ladder just in time. I can tell you i could not go into one of those rescue buoys that confining. I would rather perish where i can have full body movement first. No kidding. They need to make the pods like in Star Wars when the droids ejected. Nice and big and round and airy! Those coffin shaped ones? No way no how!
Fun plot device but I’m having trouble with the concept that when two versions of the same person from different timelines (?realities?) share the same timeline, one goes into a suspended coma like state, while the other lives. Is there only one “soul” to go around or something?
I suppose that "soul" could be the information an arrage of particles have, in that way the same person body won't be the same as their corpse. At the end nobody knows because that part of physics nowadays are only theoretical approximations no science yet.
I think the idea has to do with Einstein's theories of relativity, specifically time distortions. The concept of FTL travel means that you experience time much slower than everyone else (potentially even negative time?) And so there could be two of the same people in the future calling for a distress beacon and the past selves catching up to the prior's timeline and that would break the assumptions that you only exist in one place at any time. And a "theoretical" answer to the paradox is that the existence of one of them is "suspended" until the paradox is no longer present. This perceived concept would also introduce infinite loops and breaks in time. One take on the subject
Aidan L. I just have some issue with the only conflicting duplicate ‘state’ being life or consciousness. Presumably there were lifeboat escape-pods from in both timelines, wouldn’t the pods from the 2nd timeline be inert? Seems like it’s more of a spiritual conflict than a physics based issue. Once again a fun plot device though.
@@JSchroederee The pods in the 1st timeline aren't active (Presumably they're sitting inert on the ship somewhere), so the 2nd set are able to work, right?... That sounds physics-based to me.
Love these little vignettes, they're the video equivalent of the kind of one-dilemma short stories that dominated vintage "hard" science fiction writing.
This is a really well done short film on every level. As I watched, I was riveted by the realistic character(s) and the events they are contending with. After the fact, I'm impressed as hell by the economy with which the team accomplished beginning, middle, and end of the action.
Some theorize that faster than light (FTL) travel would actually cause the travelers to go backward in time. The original ship begins FTL, then two hours before they are supposed to stop, they exit FTL in response to a distress signal. The paradox here is that they actually end up marooned with their future selves, not their past selves. I guess this works if FTL transports you to the future. Regardless of the implications for the physics, very entertaining and thought provoking.
It doesn't stand for physics or even logic. It is too human emotion centered. One might say the very strong will of the astronauts modeled some part of the story or just made them see things closer to their will. Even that is not SF but FF.
Faster than light speed doesn't mean you traveled forward or backwards in time it only means you traveled faster than the light to the position in space that you're in at the moment and you wouldn't duplicate because you would be in faster-than-light travel so your structure would just be traveling fast it wouldn't necessarily split in two different people or a different timeline all together you're just traveling fast there are things far faster than light actually the word fast doesn't describe the workings any kind of speed description doesn't describe how things work
@@aaront950 The "speed of light" is just the "speed of causality." Try checking out minutephysics here on youtube and especially his "special relativity" playlist.

I have found this channel like 3 days ago. Thank you so much!! You rock. The films are better than most new Netflix and films out there at the cinema. I also like the short format. Brilliant acting, good plots and storylines, surprisingly good special effects.
Because Phillip was asleep, he didn't know about the doppelgangers. So she goes outside and dies again, and a new set of two arrive. The third Phillip's vitals go dark and the new girl spaces the second Phillip, which causes her's to promptly wake up... and the cycle continues.
CrookedShorts until one of them sees one of the many philip bodies floating out there, or the empty lifepods start piling up. I still don't get what happened to the second ship.
Helen ofTroy There was one scene where it looked like, all of a sudden, the ship was rocked with debris. I'm thinking the new ship takes over the old one or something weird like that.
I love your infinite loop idea Crooked. I thought the debris was the new ship coming out of hyperspace and breaking up... the two pods get ejected automatically
This is meant as a sincere compliment. Many of the scenes had the look and feel of a well-done, well-paced graphic novel. This needs a follow-up episode badly. Any plans?

So did she launch the live version of him to space, and now they're both dead, very interesting. Will have to watch again, best one I've seen yet, CGI is great. DUST pls make a full length movie of this one....

At last!!! This is the short seen in Blackmagicdesign's Resolve artwork. And now I know "the rest of the story". And's been worth the wait. Thank you, DUST!
Plot twist missing: make them stuck in a time loop. Where in reality the reason because she died on the EVA was not bc she had to repair something , but because the other "him" killed her , just as she killed him... and loop it from there
After they realized that the Phillip on the table wasn't waking up because there were two of him, all I could think of was, "she's gonna kill ya! She's gonna kill ya!"
if he had gone with it when she touched his hand, he might have survived. women don't like rejection. but the guy's obviously a little slow on the uptake
He's alive but he is not that timeline's true Philip, so he is stuck in stasis between life and death. Like Schrodinger's Cat. When that reality version of Philip dies, the universe no longer detects the same matter occupying the same close proximity and he's able to function like normal again. He's alive, but he can't wake up and the ship can't detect his life signs.

However, if you view time travel as just you moving from your reality to an alternate past reality, then altering yourself in that past would have no actual effect on you personally... it would just alter the normal course of the alternate reality version of you.
your theory makes sense to me...
Lol
Captain Kirk

Are guys ever safe with girls?
Um, she had to save her version of him. Not a generally homicidal person, just protecting her reality, her version of the universe.

Gotta account for acceleration
@@DaLab_Gaming yeah but after the acceleration you can see the ship traveling at the same speed throughout the duration of getting to Phil, it didn't pick up any more speed. So we can conclude after the initial thrust, it already reach it's top speed and didn't need more thrust.
@@michaelbrandon1222 I choose you on my team for the zombie apocalypse. Everyone else is dismissed.
@@michaelbrandon1222
Acceleration can only happen during a burn. When the burn is completed, the ship can only travel at a constant velocity. The ship's "top speed" would depend on how much fuel it had for its thrusters. More fuel means a longer burn, which means more acceleration, which means a higher final velocity.

I thought this was going to end with them sending out a distress signal and the woman going out on a space walk to try and fix things, starting the loop all over again :)

that's literally what happens.
William D when
well she told to phillip 1 that they will stay there for a long time.
Meaning that she will not generate another loop, by sending the SOS immediately.
Nah, not possible, because that means the loops would all take place in this specific reality, meaning that the bodies, duplicate ship debris, and everything else would end up piling up after a while, however millions of loops that would take, and would break the cycle.
So, no, not a time loop, as that wouldn't be feasible.
Waste of a spare. Space is dangerous. Redundancy systems are always needed.
Lol! Totally true!
You missed the point about "we will be here for a very long time". Their ship is designed for a crew of two. It is unlikely to be able to support a third individual indefinitely. Sooner or later they would have to decide who will die.
People, it is a short story. Facts are always made to fit the story line.
If you can do better........
Same with wome!

Well you see, two thing can't exist in the same time and place in the same state.
THESE SHORT STORIES ARE INCREDIBLE AND WE LOVE WATCHING THEM!! ... KEEP THEM COMING!!
Love these little vignettes, they're the video equivalent of the kind of one-dilemma short stories that dominated vintage "hard" science fiction writing.
Loved the female lead!!! She was fantastic! Great short film!! 💙💙💙
Faster than light speed doesn't mean you traveled forward or backwards in time it only means you traveled faster than the light to the position in space that you're in at the moment and you wouldn't duplicate because you would be in faster-than-light travel so your structure would just be traveling fast it wouldn't necessarily split in two different people or a different timeline all together you're just traveling fast there are things far faster than light actually the word fast doesn't describe the workings any kind of speed description doesn't describe how things work
the meaning used (I believe) is faster than light in vacuum :o) if that clears it.
Can't go back in time. Just forward. Trust me.

Ew, no. I like converging timelines better. The two survivors were in a romantic relationship, the other two weren't, and their clothes are different.
After they realized that the Phillip on the table wasn't waking up because there were two of him, all I could think of was, "she's gonna kill ya! She's gonna kill ya!"
IKR
if he had gone with it when she touched his hand, he might have survived. women don't like rejection.
but the guy's obviously a little slow on the uptake
I have watched this several times now. I just simply adore this film. The actors did AMAZING as did the whole staff.
"Ada, what happened?"
"I'm afraid I can't do that, Dave..."
That Mole deserve an origin movie by itself.
'thanks for *"taking care"* of me'
LMAO
So much better than Hollywood or Netflix stuff
Well, that was quite the "rescue".. luckilly she didn't have to "save" a ship full of colonists..
Great short drama, but... did anybody else have trouble understanding the dialogue?
Yes. I didn't get most of what she said. The sound quality was terrible.
...at some points yes.
That was smart -- how many living beings -- 2 -- how many heat sources -- 3 -- gotcha.
His heart is not beating but his eyes are moving, nice.
