The physician tracks the body to a nearby medical school, where students are in the midst of an illicit experiment. The physician faces an ethical dilemma that puts her clinical judgment up against the amoral ambition of the chair of the graduate school of neuroscience. I know everyone is saying they want a full movie, but what I like about these shorts is how they are concentrated and cut the fluff. The essence of horror.
I bet this director could make an amazing horror anthology!
Does being concentrated and without fluff strictly require not having an ending?
Honestly if you think this doesn't have an ending you need to read more and get off the MCU candies
This is exactly why I watch short films. I am hooked on them. They get to the point, and the good thing about no absolute ending is you get to imagine what happens in you own mind, or discuss it with friends as to what they think the ending would be. Short films are great!
It can be made full and good...the story would have to be as authentic as this
Can't believe a short film can give me this much goosebumps which majority of the movies these days failed to do.
Films produced by A24 are masterpieces. Psychologically crafty without your classic poorly executed scares with blaring additional sounds after predictable cliches to startle the audience. No, a much more profound, sophisticated horror relying on atmosphere and shock value and clever cinematography and superb acting.

I’ll be honest, short films are doing more for me than full length feature films and have for years now. This is perfect, the integrity is perfect. Pandora’s Box, “I have to know!”

There are some psychological horror masterpieces out there that are astonishingly ingenious at instilling dread that gradually increases and doesnt fall away. The focus is on atmosphere and shock value which is a much more sophisticated aspect to horror. Fyi Hereditary is my favourite film. A24 in general is a legendary production company for the horror genre. Found footage films are also a gem. Host (2020), Hell House LLC, As Above so Below. Asvinns short horror is bloody horrifying (this one was nightmare feul). If your watching films that indulge in cliche thrills and excessive violence for scariness then you've been missing out imo.

Oh my God! First the acting talent is world class. How did you get these two stars? They elevated the whole thing. Love the story! Original as hell. Had me on pins and needles the whole time. You need to make it into a full length feature.

There are certainly more than two stars in this - on a number of levels. This was like watching a full blown Hollywood movie, concentrated and condensed into a great 17 minute feature, without losing anything at all. Well done. Really enjoyed this!

While I agree with you, due to the box office bombs of the last few years, I would much rather have an amazing short film than an extremely disappointing movie. Imagine every one that saw this short getting furious due to hollywood greed and social justice "message" ; it would taint your memory of this.
It needs to be a full 20 season experience... I would buy every second of this..

@@calebjust1292 Seriously? SJWs in general don't like local religions and might be the side complaining that it proves heaven and hell, and does it in a scientific way.
I really enjoyed the twists and would only say that this cake needs more bread under the frosting, and a full length movie would do that. Just so many great actors chewing up the scenery and quick quirky bits need some recovery time to recover from the sugar shock. Just the other day we where talking here about quantum entanglement and how you can't use it for communication due to measuring it changes it. This moving hinges on just that! Well, that and having one person for some unknown reason, can see old man Schrödinger. A back story for that would be cool, like... Ooooo! They got entangled enough to see each other?

The “soul” acted the part superbly: I felt for him in his anguish. The malevolent creatures were brilliant. Loved the ending. Great story.
The old man soul ascended already…..what are the evil entities still lingering there?

This is one of he best DUST short films I have seen. This film was written written, excellent staging and special effects, and amazing performances by the entire cast. Please continue the story and publish part 2.

For me, it's perfect the way it is. Like the ending of the Thing. It's in doubt. It leaves you with the dread of not knowing. What more can you ask of a horror story.

I didn’t want it to end, I was so gripped by it. You had me sucked right in there watching the experiment with them. A good sign of a director, writer and cast. Please make a part 2 to this.

This felt like a prime Twilight Zone episode. A great short story that makes you think and keeps you on the edge of your seat, wondering what's going to happen. I almost expected Rod Serling to step out and give his ending monologue. Great stuff. Subscribed.

It was the scariest scene inside the chamber with the trapped soul I ever watched. It felt so real and I felt the fear building up inside my chest. What an incredible experience you managed to recreate!!

I was sitting on the edge of my chair when the credits came up and was soooooo upset that it was over!!! It’s a great feeling when a film takes you and slowly pulls you in and you can feel the tension building in your mind. This film does exactly that, and leaves you crying for more! GREAT JOB! More please! ❤
This movie should be a full length one. It is professionally done. The transition between shots is around 3-10 seconds, keeping your attention span engaged. The close ups are short while the wide shots pans, amazing. You got professional actors. The music is in the right spots, not constant ambience like "B" movies. The CGI work is amazing. The script is well written. This is a great "A" movie. Wonder what the budget is for this movie.
the original premise that we are given is already a book. It's by Dan Brown and it's called Origin. the horror aspect after the fact is...meh imo.

Will the doctor be forgiven for letting a fellow human walk into the room filled with demonic horrors, even though she was doing it to stop any further push for more testing?
Loved the cast. They were all fantastic. Haven't seen some of them in awhile, so it was a nice surprise!

Thanks Mike! Yeah, it was a really amazing experience working with Marisa / Minnie. Everyone in the supporting cast all got the audition because they were friends, and they all auditioned up against some pretty big names who wanted the roll. Regarding the doctor being forgiven, I guess it all depends on what happens after they (and if they) open that door. If I was in charge of the door unlock button, I would have read the room and been like "Um, yeah, you are acting really weird Dr. Holloway, I am not opening that door."
Her redemption for letting the old man die is in fact by letting the morally devoid scientist into the room, so yes forgiven.

I think this was perfect as is. Not one more minute of film need be shot. Everyone should appreciate what an amazing short story is, and stop asking for the storyteller to spare your anxiety. Embrace the ending with your imagination.

I agree that this is a perfectly encapsulated story that can stand on its own as a short subject matter, that being said it can easily be done as a movie, with the first 2 acts being done as character setup discovery back story, even some foreshadowing from a characters point of view on what led them to this, some suggestion of a main characters interaction with a childhood death that led them here. The final act this section is true gold, but like all things could be tweaked and drawn out a bit for increased tension, better effects larger scale,
Id absolutely want this experiment to be conducted in the movie at some deep deep underground facility where extraneous EM can be shielded and some incredibly accurate bio bed scale to measure weight change at TOD. One could even add in some religious subplot of the catholic church as well, and some zealots secretly being part of the team
Nobody seems to be mentioning Paulo Costanzo... he played a great part in this! This film is defo one of the best things on the internet at the moment. Would LOVE this being a series of shorts... or maybe even a series! Great one @Joe Russell!

Like no-one pays enough attention to the weird "strange " one like the lady singing.
This is so good! That whisper of let's see what happens almost feels like the line of a villain even though she started as the saviour. It gives me chills in the best way.
Honestly, I see it more like her understanding that they screwed with forces beyond their comprehension, and she understands there are consequences. And the fact that one of the entities turned to shush her makes it clear she was not the ire of their wrath, but rather the doctor who was oblivious to the feeling that everyone else got when they understood they did something unforgivable. All she's doing is letting nature run its course, who else is on the receiving end is unknown, but safe to assume she's not.
This is honestly one of the most compelling short films I've seen in a very long while. Thank you so much for sharing this film with us! ❤❤❤

Oh my goodness! That was as close to a perfect short as I've seen in a while! It was captivating, and frustratingly ended with me wanting to know what happens when that door is opened! This could be such a great story for a long-form! As a bonus, it was nice to see Marissa Tomei again! Well done!!!

Holy crap. I think you could easily make a whole movie from this. Very Lovecraftian and similar to From Beyond but with a twist. Love it.

Marisa and Mininie are such great actresses. This film would make an awesome series that blends the big questions with faith and horror.

That was amazing. And needs a part 2...! Having Marisa Tomei was brilliant idea as she is an excellent actress and always gives brilliant performances which add realism and credibility to the story.
Dust is getting better and better. I am so glad I found this channel. This was beyond my expectations, even though you always have great shorts. This was such a dynamic idea for a story. So refreshing that the experiment was spiritually inclined. I was expecting some gruesome resurrection type scenario. I was surprised by Torme's reaction to seeing the demons and her response. I love to be surprised. Big thumbs up.
Be careful... DUST is generally not the ones who make these videos. Give credit to the actual producers and directors. DUST is like "NBC" they merely broadcast the work of others.

Absolutely fantastic, more engaging and unsettling than any full-length horror movie I've seen for a while. Plus, it's always great to see Paulo Costanzo in anything.
Over the years DUST has been a bit hit and miss. This was a definite hit. Really well done. Great acting from a good cast. Simple premise well executed. I wasn't expecting the end. The doc's answer surprised me.
@Cam Robertson I just rewatched to check your observation. The gurney woman did several things that indicate she was doing more than the others. She air kissed the old guy good buy at the exact moment he died. She did the little song. She clearly could see something when the old man left, but she didn't tell anyone she could see what was happening. I'm not sure she was the same person in with the black holding the creepy dolly thing. The idea that she was more than she seemed is interesting. She was definitely a character the director chose to highlight, but I missed her significance. Interesting comment. I am also surprised that the doc clearly is deciding to let something potentially nasty happen to the director in the hope it might stop the experiment. Overall a well written and successfully creepy video.
This is one of those times you wish you could give a rating other than a like as it feels inadequate. Definitly a 5 out of 5 star short film. Everyone was good in it, the story was engaging, the writing was well done, the effects are wow and the fact you have Marisa Tomei just puts the cherry on top of an extremely well done film.

It's perfect as it is, no need to pad it out to be a full length film. The world needs more short form visual storytelling! I can envision a feature film length collection of such tales.
Good one ! No unnecessary buildup, logical and fast paced story and action. A *big* twist when she saw the spirit, a bigger twist when she saw the ghouls(?), and the /wait for it/ the moral decision to Open The Door. Superb, simply superb Joe !

I love the cliffhanger end, it leaves the mind reeling, wonder what happened next but given enough to assume what could have happened. Its a great way to end a story because it keeps you thinking about it.

@matthewedwards6454 I always find these views on "nothing" in the afterlife funny. Your hope is that when you die you experience nothing, when you define nothing from a (probably depressed) human standpoint. Have you ever thought that when you die, rather than experiencing nothing, you would actually experience everything the universe would have to offer all at once for all eternity? In a sense, that would also be a form of nothing. It certainly makes more sense for energy to sink back into the primordial soup of reality than for it to just dissipate into emptiness
Can you imagine that? Experiencing endless whitenoise and visuals with no consciousness to actually enjoy or understand them? Truly nothing.

That was BEAUTIFUL! The story is very exciting and elegantly laid out. I’m 60 and a 10 year Army Veteran. Not much frightens me. Seeing what was captured in the chamber is going to give me nightmares. Your work is fantastic. And Minnie looks great!
Morality plays hard here. Doc seems to seek vengeance. Upset at her "patient" very nearly losing his shot at redemption by the maniplations of the scientist lady, she sees the evil in the room and lies about it to cause malevolence. This all means that she allowed the evil to escape the room and afflict her. This shows the length and power of the tentacles of evil. Good effort

I’m a novelist and was impressed by the drama and the idea of body-snatching and soul catching. Given your premise the ending is intriguing and imaginatively productive.
I’ve watched dozens and dozens of NDE’s and the idea of evil entering at death doesn’t figure. Have you read “Laws of the Spirit World”, a compelling story of a mother who connects with her son who has just died and gets her to describe what he experiences through automatic writing. This book is non-fiction. It ends the epistemological hegemony of science without trying.
This is amazing! It had me holding my breath.. would love to see a part 2 or a full length version. Better than most movies that come out these days!
I don't think opening that door would be a good idea. I doubt those things inside would be content with staying in there. Although it would be one hell of a movie if they got out, and......

This is BY FAR the best SFSF I've seen this year (probably longer)!! While I've always loved Tomei, she does good work - an actress can only be as good as the STORY! A++++ to both. Would love to see more from those who collaborated to bring this short film to light.!!
Riveting. I am impressed by the quality of talent you were able to bring to this project. Have always been a big fan of Marisa Tomei ever since "My Cousin Vinnie" and of course Minnie Driver is topknotch, but the other performances were really convincing as well.

This was one of the best that the company has produced. Not just the bigger named stars; other DUST productions have had excellent acting.
Personally, I think the singing nurse, creepy as she was, falling into borderline sociopathic was the best person in the cast. She literally caused an emotional response beyond those getting their line correct and being at the right spot at the right time.

Marisa Tomei & Minnie Driver are big name stars to some of us. I thought their acting performances were flawlessly executed. Paulo Costanzo's performance was also excellent, I hope there are more short and full feature length films with their top notch talents.
They draw me into the story and for a few moments I forget the outside world and its challenges and problems don't exist, as I feel myself totally immersed in the little universes they create.
That was freaking awesome! It was so well done that it felt like I had just watched an entire feature length film. I gotta see more like this, you guys knocked it out of the park. Not to mention my all time biggest crush Marisa Tomei in the lead, great choice. Two very enthusiastic thumbs up here, great job.

The same has been said, a time or two, about Lovecraft's and Barker's work.
It’s sad that the doctor who chose saving a life and do no harm, chose revenge in that last moment.
Also, I thought the lady who was so eager to see him die would be more than she seemed.
She didn’t chose revenge, she wants them to stop experimenting on others so the souls don’t get trapped. She knows she couldn’t save all the others without lying to them. If she told the truth they will experiment on many others and their souls would be sacrificed. So she chose to let the curly lady to be sacrificed instead so they will stop the experiment and leave dying people at peace. It’s one sacrifice. I would chose the same.
But she would end up releasing those things to the world which I think is worse.
@@sharzneynkandu7618 Those things were coming from "outside" anyway, attracted by the soul hanging a bit too long there... I would say those "demons" wanted some sort of payback for having been trapped there and miss their "prize" at the same time. And the chief of that experiment is somewhat trying to play God or find something that is not meant to be discovered. So maybe her soul is pretty dark too, more than the other ones participating in it... I don't know. Trying to make sense of it...
These shorts have come a LONG way since the advent of the interwebs.
The production value alone of this one is amazing.
These kinds of projects give the viewer the sense that these are truly works of art for the whole cast.
As a stand alone this film is fantastic with stellar performances.
The universe it opens up could be rich with story telling.
Creative and wonderfully produced.

I remember seeing something several years ago about a scientific team having terminally ill volunteers sleep in specially made beds on scales to measure any weight loss at the time of death. There WAS a weight loss. The doctor running the experiment studdied near death experiences and because of his analysis he believed absolutely in the existence of souls. Many of us take this on faith. There is definitely a public interest in this. Dear Producer, If you you make a full length film on this people WILL come to the theater. I certainly will and so will my friends. Nice work.
Air has weight. As the lungs deflate, that weight would be lost.
This was FANTASTIC. I wanted to see what would happen after. What sort of chaos was unleashed. Great sense of pace and storytelling and suspense.
This was BEAUTIFUL! It was more entertainment and suspense packed ibto 17 minutes than most movies generate in 2 hours! And Minnie Driver plus Marisa Tomei?! I hope more Hollywood A-Listers make these types of short films!

Impressive, I appreciated the nod to traditional after-life events, the transfer from the room into the light, the darkness of the evil entities. The coolest thing is that everyone in the room was ultimately interested in the study, the scientists didn't seem as thoughtful about what they might find. The doctor though, whatever her level of belief in the afterlife, she was seeing what was actually occurring, and her morbid curiosity to see what might happen to the professor was probably the most terrifying part of this incredible short film.
OMFG that was creepy and very very original very well done guys, tell me there's a sequel ??? I love the whole moral high ground and personal belief questions they need to ask each other. This is the best short I've seen in a long time, awesome job :)

This is actually a similar plan if I end up having a terminal condition. But much more involved. I've told everyone, years ago, in my family this will happen. I want all types of scientists performing tests, psychics/mediums, religious leaders etc. very similar to this. I want them to prove something/anything happens at the time of death. Do we have a soul etc.? Whether it be spiritual/religious or scientific I want the world to know the answer. I'm agnostic. But it doesn't matter. Whichever way the science/proof points.....
@@KM-nj3cm since it's unlikely that any of us conscious beings can predict what happens after we die, similarly I think it would be pretty improbable for us to invent a technology to detect whatever force the soul is.

It's hard for me to get caught up in any TV show or movie nowadays because it's just mostly re-scripted things from our past just done over in a different way. This is AWESOME!!! I love the concept, the cast, the special effects. I also agree, need a Movie or TV Series on NETFLIX, AMAZON or which ever platform you choose, but definitely something Sci-Fi \Suspense TV shows need at this time. All we have is Star Wars and Star Trek. CAPTIVATING Joe!!!
