The gaps in the Halo 4 sword is for disarming enemy players, if you're in a standoff they would jab the enemys weapon into the gap, and then fling the weapon out of their hands. its a clever detail, found in real life swords.

In Halo CE I thought the sword was big key. Mind you, I was 5 and played on easy. On Truth and Reconciliation when I went up the grav lift into the ship, all the doors were locked. Then the invisible elite with the "key" came out of the locked door and hit marines and me making a blunt clunking sound as a giant key would make when bashing skulls. And in Silent Cartographer, yellow elite with the "key" locks the door when you approach. So, until I played Halo 2 I just thought it was a big glowing key. Bad graphics and the sword disappearing as soon as I killed the wielder made it impossible for me to piece together that it was a sword.

Honestly, my favorite visual iteration of the energy sword was the original, in _Halo: Combat Evolved._ I really liked the way it 'bled' energy, plasma just evaporating off of the blade, giving it an almost gaseous appearance. No subsequent game has ever really recaptured that appearance for me. It's a shame it wasn't player-usable in CE.

I personally like the look of the Halo swords in 4 and 5 over 2 and 3. It looks sharp, lethal, and actually looks like a sword. I know it’s an energy weapon, but that doesn’t mean it has to be nearly transparent like the the Halo 2 and 3 one. I also love how the 4 and 5 swords are an overall triangular shape, instead of a circle with a spike.
Halo 3's energy sword all the way, it's best to look at and I still have 16 player system link nights on the 360 where we sword joust for fun between games haha always good times with Halo 3
I seriously hope the Energy Sword has the amazing lighting that it had in the Halo 5 beta, though that might be because I had no personal issue using it. As for my favorite version of the sword I only use a real man's sword; A shotgun.
Q&A: Why does 343 take known armours and drastically changes them (sometimes to the point of being either undesirable or unrecognisable) eg: How Commando (my favourite armour from Reach) DIED aesthetically when transferred from Gen 1 Mjolnir to Gen 2, how the Rogue helmet became one of 343's millions of EVA ripoffs, the changes in Mark IV, Recon and ODST/Helljumper or how the EOD helmet looks more like a Stormtrooper than ever. I'm not saying that all the 343 versions of helmets need to go and there's even some versions that I prefer to the Bungie versions eg: Gungnir, and I not only do I prefer the Halo 4 Air Assault helmet to the Reach version but I can also easily imagine Kat wearing the 343 helmet. Sorry for the long question but I hope it gets answered
@@Jedi_Spartan they are gen 2 to make up for the spartan 4 weaker augments and for a more mobile style instead of defensive. Chiefs armor looks fucking amazing there were a few issues but nothing too major with its design and it definitely fit more his character. The hybrid look is really interesting though and a good refresh to see.
Avci / Well, to be honest, being weaker is no excuse for a worse design. In fact, to compensate for the weakness the helmet visibility should be better. I enjoyed Halo 4 personally, but I do admit the helmets really need to step up their game.
343 outsourced much of the armor designs for 4 and 5 to another company to focus on everything else. As a result most of the armors wound up being scuffed as hell. Designs like Recruit, Air Assault, Scout, and Mk. VI were pretty well off (especially Scout, god that's such a good helmet), but almost all other pre-4/5 armors got butchered. Need I mention ODST or Gungnir. 5 saw a bunch of nicer in-house designs, but the outsourced ones still were total ass (looking at you especially Seeker).
Which was strange, because one of the early trailers of CE showed chief with the energy sword in hand. Wonder why would they remove the ability to use the swords and have them usable in halo 2?
In a different take to this video series, I'd actually like to see the evolution of maps throughout the series, and showcase how it changed in each game that map was released/remade in. Blood Gulch would be a great place to start, given it's appeared (in some form) in almost every Halo game. Other maps that could be explored would be Midship, Sidewinder (Avalanche, and *maybe* Diamondback if you're allowed to show Halo Online/ElDewrito footage or screenshots), The Pit, and Zanzibar, to give a few ideas. As far as for weapons, I'd like to see either the Shotgun or Sniper Rifle for UNSC, and Plasma Rifle or Needler for Covenant in a future video. Great work!
It's not really a weapon that you can use freely, but when you assassinate someone as an Elite in Halo Reach multiplayer, they pull out a tinier sort of "dagger" version of the energy sword as an analogue to the Spartan combat knife. Just thought that was interesting, and it's a bit of a shame that this concept wasn't taken further in later games.
Halo 4's sword is pretty obscene in multiplayer. But if you're playing.. what's the Action Sack mode where it's Territories with swords? Whatever that mode is, it's a BLAST. That is, if you know what you're doing. When you give two players an equal melee weapon, suddenly everything is dependent on strategy. You see players trying to trick each other, or use clever thruster maneuvers, and even strategically placing themselves with their team to most efficiently wipe you out. It's not nearly enough to forgive all of its Halo 4 sins, but I just love that mode. I can't help but rant about it. And Flood mode? If you had a good reaction time, Flood was still fun with thrusters (I still would prefer Halo adopt something other than armor/Spartan abilities). If you were a Flood, it was such fun tearing through crowds before they could react. If you were human, it was so satisfying to kill Flood as they came barreling towards you at such high speeds. It's definitely got a curve, though, and it's not really fair. It takes a conscious moment to realize a feature is bad - if I never thought about it, I would just think the mode is fantastic. I guess that bit was off-topic, but swords are involved, right? And, oh man, CE... I always wanted to pick up and use a sword. I'd even kill Zealots and quickly peek at their fallen swords before they disappeared. Halo 2 granted me my wish to finally wield one. Side-note: Whenever I play as an Elite, I feel wrong to pick up human weaponry (unless absolutely necessary). It's like I'm mentally roleplaying that I'm truly an Elite warrior. It's probably partially because Covenant weaponry is kind of flawed compared to human weaponry, usually, and when you've been playing for so long, it's just not fun to use human weapons in campaign cos it's too easy. I was the biggest fan of the Plasma Rifle back in the day... It's not my favorite weapon at all anymore, but it still holds a special place in my heart. The reach design makes sense though. In the halo timeline reach takes place before all other games. The sword we see in reach is probably one of the first versions of the sword.
@Deathtrooper40 I know it was in CE but it was still very much curvy in that game, it looks a lot more like it does in Halo 2 then how it looks in Reach. Aside from that the energy sword is an old weapon in lore so the Reach version still wouldn't be one of the first versions.

I think we can chalk the change in sound from "gas ignition" to "lightsaber" as sword builders slowly figuring out how to refine the weapon. The massive jump between 3 and 4 being the result of 4 y ears of Prophet-free investigation and experimentation.

You kept saying that the halo 4 and 5 ones are jsut free kill tickets. You then never explain what the energy sword in the older games was. What it gave speed runners a fast way to move around? It was always a jsut have fun and go merc the enemies because when you can lunge and one shot everything then it’s always been a free kill ticket.

The Energy Sword is one of my Top 5 Favorite Halo weapons. I have so much fun with it killing Flood as you have more ammunition cutting through biomass. But it’s also fun in Halo Reach Multiplayer. I remember playing a match of Elite Slayer Free For All. I was the the top player in the match and annoyed players by going into Armor Lock, and once I got out of it, I’d lunge at them. My other favorite weapons to use were the Assault Rifle, DMR, and two weapons I hope you do a history of, Fuel Rod and Carbine. Since ODST lacked the BR, I’d go straight for the Carbine. It’s probably one of the main weapons I like to use in the game. And while I like the Fuel Rod, I mostly give it to ally AI so that when they act as a passenger, they can deal maximum devastation. And Halo 5’s variants of the weapon make me love it even more. A few honorable mentions of my favorite weapons are the Railgun, Saw, Plasma Rifle, Needler, Needle Rifle, Shotgun, and Gravity Hammer.
Halo 4's sword wasn't just a free kill there was plenty of counter play with active camo and the bolt-shot. Halo 4 was my favorite multiplayer experience because you could sprint AND have armor abilities. What a concept. It was really fast paced, but also had way more strategy and counter-play than Halo 5 did. Idk why Halo 4 always get so much hate, I think it's because it was a really good game and people were upset it was 343 and not Bungie. But in contrast Halo 5 was much worse in terms of power weapons and map control offering free kills. It wasn't just the sword that seemed like a free kill, in Halo 5 the BR was the most OP gun and there was no counter play to power weapons without ordinance or armor abilities other than teamwork and map control.
Trimping in halo reach with the energy sword, shotgun, or the gravity hammer is some of the most fun I've had in pvp. There's nothing like having your own man-cannon at every ramp and being able to shoot yourself into any enemy for an out of nowhere instakill.
I'm basically reading this as "the energy sword is dumb now because it's an offensive weapon" when in the actual lore of the weapon, it's SUPPOSED to be an offensive weapon. like yeah, maybe they could tone down the damage so it's not an instant kill, but complaining because it's being exactly what the lore says it is, and not what benefits the meta, is just dumb
Honestly, I love halo 5's sword. I wish 343 kept the melee thing, though, where you can block the blade. Would've made it much more fun to best someone with it :)
My favourite version would be the Halo 1 energy sword. True you can't actually use it, but I was 10 when I first played Halo CE and I remember the first time I saw it on the truth and reconciliation. An invisible monster that cut down your team members one after another and at any moment you could be next. And you can bet I searched for about 15 minutes trying to find where it dropped.
Halo 2s energy sword damage was based on momentum so, it wasn't alawys a guaranteed kill and it could be Dodge if you move to the side opposite of the sword. There was also sword jousting in the orginal halo 2, but it was not as dramatic as halo 3, not sure about the PC version. halo 2s sword could also kill multiple enemies in one swing if close enough. Also I think the prophet's Bane looks ugly, but it is fun to use. I hate that when you spartan charge any part of the body touches someone it's an instant kill.
Favorite's gotta be the original Halo 2 sword with its absolutely maniacal swing speed. I used to run the battery down on it and just use the hilt to smack people with insanely fast melee attacks. Borderline useless, but _absolutely hilarious_ whenever I managed a kill with a dead sword.
“Free kill weapon” must be what bad players call it. That clip that kept popping up when you said that the sword player would’ve died if that person could actually land their shots or if the other player had any amount of situational awareness. I do agree it’s broke af in halo 5 though
Halo 2 had the best sword. I liked how when you held it, it was pointed more to the side rather than pointed "upward" like an actual sword. They started pointing it upwards in 3, and even more pointed upwards in 4 & 5.
One thing you forgot to add was in Halo 2's multiplayer is if you played as an Elite, the Elite would have different animations when it drew out the sword which you could only see in 3rd person.

I personally like the look of the Halo swords in 4 and 5 over 2 and 3. It looks sharp, lethal, and actually looks like a sword. I know it’s an energy weapon, but that doesn’t mean it has to be nearly transparent like the the Halo 2 and 3 one. I also love how the 4 and 5 swords are an overall triangular shape, instead of a circle with a spike.
Halo 3's energy sword all the way, it's best to look at and I still have 16 player system link nights on the 360 where we sword joust for fun between games haha always good times with Halo 3
I seriously hope the Energy Sword has the amazing lighting that it had in the Halo 5 beta, though that might be because I had no personal issue using it. As for my favorite version of the sword I only use a real man's sword;

Q&A: Why does 343 take known armours and drastically changes them (sometimes to the point of being either undesirable or unrecognisable) eg: How Commando (my favourite armour from Reach) DIED aesthetically when transferred from Gen 1 Mjolnir to Gen 2, how the Rogue helmet became one of 343's millions of EVA ripoffs, the changes in Mark IV, Recon and ODST/Helljumper or how the EOD helmet looks more like a Stormtrooper than ever. I'm not saying that all the 343 versions of helmets need to go and there's even some versions that I prefer to the Bungie versions eg: Gungnir, and I not only do I prefer the Halo 4 Air Assault helmet to the Reach version but I can also easily imagine Kat wearing the 343 helmet. Sorry for the long question but I hope it gets answered

@@Jedi_Spartan they are gen 2 to make up for the spartan 4 weaker augments and for a more mobile style instead of defensive. Chiefs armor looks fucking amazing there were a few issues but nothing too major with its design and it definitely fit more his character. The hybrid look is really interesting though and a good refresh to see.
Avci / Well, to be honest, being weaker is no excuse for a worse design. In fact, to compensate for the weakness the helmet visibility should be better. I enjoyed Halo 4 personally, but I do admit the helmets really need to step up their game.
343 outsourced much of the armor designs for 4 and 5 to another company to focus on everything else. As a result most of the armors wound up being scuffed as hell. Designs like Recruit, Air Assault, Scout, and Mk. VI were pretty well off (especially Scout, god that's such a good helmet), but almost all other pre-4/5 armors got butchered. Need I mention ODST or Gungnir. 5 saw a bunch of nicer in-house designs, but the outsourced ones still were total ass (looking at you especially Seeker).

Which was strange, because one of the early trailers of CE showed chief with the energy sword in hand. Wonder why would they remove the ability to use the swords and have them usable in halo 2?
Unpopular opinion: The darker blades look better
In a different take to this video series, I'd actually like to see the evolution of maps throughout the series, and showcase how it changed in each game that map was released/remade in. Blood Gulch would be a great place to start, given it's appeared (in some form) in almost every Halo game. Other maps that could be explored would be Midship, Sidewinder (Avalanche, and *maybe* Diamondback if you're allowed to show Halo Online/ElDewrito footage or screenshots), The Pit, and Zanzibar, to give a few ideas.
As far as for weapons, I'd like to see either the Shotgun or Sniper Rifle for UNSC, and Plasma Rifle or Needler for Covenant in a future video. Great work!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Halo 2 Anniversary is almost peak modern Halo, on both aesthetic and gameplay.

It's not really a weapon that you can use freely, but when you assassinate someone as an Elite in Halo Reach multiplayer, they pull out a tinier sort of "dagger" version of the energy sword as an analogue to the Spartan combat knife. Just thought that was interesting, and it's a bit of a shame that this concept wasn't taken further in later games.
Halo 4's sword is pretty obscene in multiplayer. But if you're playing.. what's the Action Sack mode where it's Territories with swords? Whatever that mode is, it's a BLAST. That is, if you know what you're doing. When you give two players an equal melee weapon, suddenly everything is dependent on strategy. You see players trying to trick each other, or use clever thruster maneuvers, and even strategically placing themselves with their team to most efficiently wipe you out.
It's not nearly enough to forgive all of its Halo 4 sins, but I just love that mode. I can't help but rant about it.
And Flood mode? If you had a good reaction time, Flood was still fun with thrusters (I still would prefer Halo adopt something other than armor/Spartan abilities). If you were a Flood, it was such fun tearing through crowds before they could react. If you were human, it was so satisfying to kill Flood as they came barreling towards you at such high speeds. It's definitely got a curve, though, and it's not really fair. It takes a conscious moment to realize a feature is bad - if I never thought about it, I would just think the mode is fantastic.
I guess that bit was off-topic, but swords are involved, right?
And, oh man, CE... I always wanted to pick up and use a sword. I'd even kill Zealots and quickly peek at their fallen swords before they disappeared. Halo 2 granted me my wish to finally wield one.
Side-note: Whenever I play as an Elite, I feel wrong to pick up human weaponry (unless absolutely necessary). It's like I'm mentally roleplaying that I'm truly an Elite warrior. It's probably partially because Covenant weaponry is kind of flawed compared to human weaponry, usually, and when you've been playing for so long, it's just not fun to use human weapons in campaign cos it's too easy.
I was the biggest fan of the Plasma Rifle back in the day... It's not my favorite weapon at all anymore, but it still holds a special place in my heart.

The reach design makes sense though. In the halo timeline reach takes place before all other games. The sword we see in reach is probably one of the first versions of the sword.
Reach is only 20 days before Halo 1
I would think it's one of the different models the Elites have available, just like how the UNSC have different models of the Assault Rifle
@Deathtrooper40 I know it was in CE but it was still very much curvy in that game, it looks a lot more like it does in Halo 2 then how it looks in Reach.
Aside from that the energy sword is an old weapon in lore so the Reach version still wouldn't be one of the first versions.

My personal Favorite design of the energy sword is the one from Halo Wars, the rapier type guard is absolutely amazing.

I think my favourite design is halo reach's Which is something I thought I would never say with most halo weapons. I like the more angular look and the more defined energy hilt. Unlike 343 where it's angular but no defined hilt

It was always a jsut have fun and go merc the enemies because when you can lunge and one shot everything then it’s always been a free kill ticket.

Halo 2 Anniversary cutscenes have my favorite visual design but Halo 3 probably has my favorite gameplay design.
The Energy Sword is one of my Top 5 Favorite Halo weapons. I have so much fun with it killing Flood as you have more ammunition cutting through biomass. But it’s also fun in Halo Reach Multiplayer. I remember playing a match of Elite Slayer Free For All. I was the the top player in the match and annoyed players by going into Armor Lock, and once I got out of it, I’d lunge at them. My other favorite weapons to use were the Assault Rifle, DMR, and two weapons I hope you do a history of, Fuel Rod and Carbine. Since ODST lacked the BR, I’d go straight for the Carbine. It’s probably one of the main weapons I like to use in the game. And while I like the Fuel Rod, I mostly give it to ally AI so that when they act as a passenger, they can deal maximum devastation. And Halo 5’s variants of the weapon make me love it even more. A few honorable mentions of my favorite weapons are the Railgun, Saw, Plasma Rifle, Needler, Needle Rifle, Shotgun, and Gravity Hammer.

Halo 4's sword wasn't just a free kill there was plenty of counter play with active camo and the bolt-shot. Halo 4 was my favorite multiplayer experience because you could sprint AND have armor abilities. What a concept. It was really fast paced, but also had way more strategy and counter-play than Halo 5 did.
Idk why Halo 4 always get so much hate, I think it's because it was a really good game and people were upset it was 343 and not Bungie. But in contrast Halo 5 was much worse in terms of power weapons and map control offering free kills. It wasn't just the sword that seemed like a free kill, in Halo 5 the BR was the most OP gun and there was no counter play to power weapons without ordinance or armor abilities other than teamwork and map control.
Trimping in halo reach with the energy sword, shotgun, or the gravity hammer is some of the most fun I've had in pvp. There's nothing like having your own man-cannon at every ramp and being able to shoot yourself into any enemy for an out of nowhere instakill.
I'm basically reading this as "the energy sword is dumb now because it's an offensive weapon" when in the actual lore of the weapon, it's SUPPOSED to be an offensive weapon. like yeah, maybe they could tone down the damage so it's not an instant kill, but complaining because it's being exactly what the lore says it is, and not what benefits the meta, is just dumb
Honestly, I love halo 5's sword. I wish 343 kept the melee thing, though, where you can block the blade. Would've made it much more fun to best someone with it :)
My favourite version would be the Halo 1 energy sword. True you can't actually use it, but I was 10 when I first played Halo CE and I remember the first time I saw it on the truth and reconciliation. An invisible monster that cut down your team members one after another and at any moment you could be next. And you can bet I searched for about 15 minutes trying to find where it dropped.
Halo 2s energy sword damage was based on momentum so, it wasn't alawys a guaranteed kill and it could be Dodge if you move to the side opposite of the sword. There was also sword jousting in the orginal halo 2, but it was not as dramatic as halo 3, not sure about the PC version. halo 2s sword could also kill multiple enemies in one swing if close enough. Also I think the prophet's Bane looks ugly, but it is fun to use. I hate that when you spartan charge any part of the body touches someone it's an instant kill.
Favorite's gotta be the original Halo 2 sword with its absolutely maniacal swing speed. I used to run the battery down on it and just use the hilt to smack people with insanely fast melee attacks.

“Free kill weapon” must be what bad players call it. That clip that kept popping up when you said that the sword player would’ve died if that person could actually land their shots or if the other player had any amount of situational awareness. I do agree it’s broke af in halo 5 though

Halo 2 had the best sword. I liked how when you held it, it was pointed more to the side rather than pointed "upward" like an actual sword. They started pointing it upwards in 3, and even more pointed upwards in 4 & 5.
One thing you forgot to add was in Halo 2's multiplayer is if you played as an Elite, the Elite would have different animations when it drew out the sword which you could only see in 3rd person.
