Im not an experienced mechanic by any means but taking a break and coming back is a useful tip for so many things. The feeling of being stumped on something and coming back to it with a fresh mind like "OHHHH how did i not see this before" is something i know all too well lol
Also most equipment manufacturers have really good tech hotlines. I’ve given them calls so many times when I’m stumped and they got me on the right track

Always check POWER AND GROUNDS. If it has power and ground, more than likely that component is bad. If it doesn't have power or ground, use a voltage drop to test for high resistance or resistance measurement for an open. That'll take care of most of your electrical problems
Mostly yes but it depends what your testing with if your on a 12 v system and a component works with 12v and its only receiving 7 due to corrosion you could be fooled by that as well but you are correct just wanted to add for anyone who may be looking for information
That's why he said test for a voltage drop cause if you're only getting seven then the voltage is dropping indicating high resistance which is corrosion or loose connection, burnt area like I said high resistance.
All I was doing was replacing a trunk harness for a recall on a mustang, after I got done, the rear camera was inoperative. I double checked all my work (splicing 10 wires and connecting a coax cable) and it was all good, thought I verified power and ground to the camera, still inop, then I started going to the bcm and the wires between the camera and the screen.. went back and supplied ground to the camera, worked perfect. The harness they sent for the recall had an open on that wire. Routed ground to an eyelet nearby, because any ground is good ground, worked perfect every time I tried it.
Heck yeah bud hit the nail on the head keep it simple stupid just went out to a bobcat skid steer customer complaint “slow lift and reduced lifting power”(on a foot pedal machine) customer claims he’s already checked the simple stuff I guess he didn’t check for the dip can under the heal of the lift peddle 🤦 Love the videos
Electrical troubleshooting steps i use- 1. Verify customer complaint, and ask a crap load of questions about the issue when talking with customer. 2. Know theory of operation on what im troubleshooting 3. Start by looking for what is right in the circuit. 4. Texas 2 step dmm at battery ground long dmm lead to component or powerprobe works great, chevk for power? Now how about a ground? Is there any indication of voltage drop instead of 12 i have 7 volts that kind of thing is my ground close to 0 volts, veejer enterprise method btw 5. Dan sullivan methodology keep it simple its only 3 possibilities for electrical issues short, open, high resistance thats it dont overcomplicate it just because there is a crap load of wires its not all connected each section has its own circuit, just a fuse-relay- power- ground etc... for every circuit just keep calm and test on. 6. Swaptronics 7. Scanner danner method how is it controlled what is its job power side switched provide the power or ground whatever just bypass it look for scan data pid change signal circuit integrity test look his stuff up pull up or pull down design 8. Journal it especially if it causes you grief next time you will have notes and writing it will make you better at remembering it 9. The complicated crap is because joe smoe did something to it playing mechanic and caused it to be complicated this is basically the only time it gets complicated 10. Never trust anyone one if troubleshooting with someone they say i checked that already check it yourself they are probably lying. 11. Call service section about their equipment like for example Cat dozer issue, call Cat ask them questions when stumped Now this works in other areas not just electical 20 yrs of fixing crap and a lot of money/ research enjoy and dont be a no it all no one likes that dude be humble

Another great video guys. An issue that I’ve run into and seen lots of my coworkers get caught by is, jumping to a known problem. Especially in fleets where you have several units that are the same make and model. If you find the same problem on 2 of them, guys can jump straight to that on the rest.
The number one thing you said was at the 3:00 mark, and I feel like this doesn’t get enough attention. To successfully troubleshoot anything you must know how it is supposed to function. If you don’t how do you know it’s fixed.
Great advice! Im a fleet mechanic at a shop in Alberta that runs mostly Mack Mp7 trucks and derate issues really been kicking my butt lately. Like I fix the problems for the codes I get but even after successfully regening the truck still stuck in derate with no fault codes.
had an issue with a client where his unit would only work on half the barn, checked over the entire unit several times over, even had the client check to make sure i wasn't crazy lol. 6 hours of troubleshooting from the unit to the pipeline (where the milk goes and where the power comes from)to the vacuum pump, i was stumped. to find out a gasket wasnt seated all the way even though it looked/felt like it was from the outside. Had to get a coworker to come and assist me and he went right to the gasket and fixed it first shot, of course the client had to be standing right there too.
The amount of times i get to a no start and get in the cab and find its stil in drive or reverse is unbelievable. Always gotta look for operator error!
For me ain't divide everything into categories. Engine: Fuel, Air, Electrical. Hydraulic/pneumatic: pumps, hoses, cylinders and controls. ETC. Then I look at the weakest and cheapest link hoses, wires, fuses, filters and go on from there.

Know the system, you may need to spend a few hours reading before you touch anything. Get your information direct from the manufacturer whenever possible. Understand the diagram & components. Keep it simple, 90% of problems are basic issues. Can’t tell you how many machines I’ve fixed with a cheap part after other mechanics already replaced pumps, ecms, valves etc…
I have a travel issue on my pc35-2. One side is way slower and if you slow the opposite side down to make her track straight then the damned thing is so much slower over all speed. I’m afraid something I’d bypassing.
Buddy asked me about a Hitachi 120 Excavator, I told him I was to busy . But he had it at dealer and said spent 8k $ and still not fixed! So if he reaches out fast or trys to dig fast the machine dies. But if he runs it easy it stays running but digs slow. Changed all filters, diesel and Hyd, cleaned tanks, said found nothing inside, someone told him lift pump on motor , but he said it starts right back up after it stalls. Any ideas what to look at first I can relay to him?
Do u think its an engine power issue or to much hyd load Take all banjo fittings out at fuel filters make sure there clean blow air back to tank make sure u dont have a fuel restriction also make sure u dont have a collapsing hose on inlet from tank Could be a hyd issue with pumps not destroking as they should Has anyone messed wth them
The dealer supposedly checked pressures, they changed some valves on lift cylinders supposedly, it was better for about 100hr then back to samething. Idk it's hard to understand porkchops sometimes lol they talk to fast

For me it's question the customer about it and ask the same questions in different ways. Verify. And start with stupid/ most logical. And check end to end. Then in sections accordingly. Damn I've seen some guys get right ahead of themselves. Sure. I've made mistakes. Everyone has. And dot get stuck on the machinery is the issue.. because well. Parts fail. From new. Had one car not long after COVID restrictions being opened up have 4 new alternators fail. New doesn't mean good
Always go back to basics , so many people overlook the simplest and open a can of worms . And when you figure it out everybody thinks youre a fuckin genius . Lmao
When someone doesn't want to share secrets, it's because they don't know enough of them. LOL I've found that industries that guard their secrets are mostly jobs that are extremely easy to do, and anymore can do it. That's why they don't want to give it away. Most trades are skill intensive. You can tell everything and people still can't do it. Welding for one. Cooking is another. Mechanics is easy once you know how it works, and the reason people pay others to do it is they have better things to do with their time, or it's to much hassle.
Dude with all of the tech hotlines out now, it's not very wise to throw your hands up, because the next guy is gonna show you up. I spent 4 hours on a Volvo vnl 760 abs issue. It was a chafed wire in the module harness
Multiplexing issues?! new ecm calibration which is my go to since it always seems to be the fix for cummins I usually work on, def harness had bad spot in it spliced it still didn’t have power checked a ground cleaned it and got power , put a def header in it still having multiplexing and def codes, could it be a resistor in the def harness ? I’m stumped someone help
A little late, but I'm a Cummins field tech and find that more often than not you have something pulling your termination resistance down. On most Cummins engines the turbo actuator is one of the termination resistors. Always double check the diagram and check your resistance out and check your actuator itself. Also battery voltage is key. Weak batteries have fucked me a time or two. More often than not the part throwing the code is not the part that's failed on a 1939 network. I constantly find other modules on the network that are failing and pulling the resistance down too far for modules that update more frequently. Make sure you're making the ecm run the diagnostic for clearing the code when you finish repairs as well.
Oh also Cummins has been updating ecm calibrations to have more tolerance for network resistance ranges. Essentially just writing the problem off. So that can likely be a part of why you're seeing the success rate with cals.

Dan Sullivan is a great electrical teacher. I recommend his TH-cam videos. He also invented a tool called the loadpro. I recommend that tool as well.
Dan Sullivan's book entitled "Fundamental electrical troubleshooting" is an excellent book, written by a mechanic for mechanics.....

Had too many callouts to find emergency stops activated, in gear or wrong switch operated to release the bucket.
Sometimes you need to walk away for a bit and come back to it...
Hydraulic chatter on a skidder grapple 525 cat is from lack of flow? Pump is putting out correct pressure so I'm guessing adjust arch spool

Got a 2016 cat 279c2 skidsteer it will pull left when hit high gear or when you hit low it will pull to the right. Cant figure it out. Any ideas?
