Many of you guys are saying you would never eat hogfish because they change their gender but over 500 species of fish do that including some favorites like parrotfish, grouper, seabass, wrasses and clownfish. Its a natural process that fish use to increase survival odds, some fish will change from female to male if there are no males or male to female if there are no females around so their species can still breed. (sequential hermaphroditism) "Fish" is also used as a derogatory term in Jamaica for this reason!
A friend who’s violently allergic to all molluscs had quite a reaction to a mollusc eating fish once, though. I forget which, we ordered a favourite Chinese whole fish dish in a restaurant and both of us should have thought a little harder!
The reason you have 50K subs is because you are not only a very good cook who talks everyone through the steps, but you are authentic as hell, my man. You look up Jamaican recipes and half the time you get someone's take on it which is inauthentic or overly altered. I cook a lot and while I am a relative newcomer to cooking Caribbean food (along with African), in my opinion, it's probably the most neglected and insanely tasty cuisine out there. so it's really nice to have a channel like yours to show real deal Jamaican recipes. You will get 100K subs and more in no time!
200k if I have anything to do with it! Prefectly said and absolutely on the ball. No ego no fancy kitchen ware no over the top humour just great authentic cooking with a History twist 🆙️
Hi Nick. Thank you for another great vlog. That hog fish 🐟 looks so succulent it must taste amazing with all that lovely mouth-watering escoviech. The bread looks awesome, too. Looking forward to your next upload. Stay ever blessed. One love 💙 ❤️ 🇯🇲 💯 🎉🎉🎉
Tried the escovitch fish today for dinner and it was delicious. I used white fish that I had and we cannot stop eating it. I cooked grits to go with it. Yummy!! It's my second time cooking it but this recipe is going to be the one I will use going forward. Delicious chef. Thanks! 😋
My mouth is literally watering watching the end result!!! I cannot wait to recreate this entire recipe including the bread!! Wish me luck on the bread, I haven’t had much luck any time I’ve tried to make bread before😅
Nic, your recipes are so extraordinary and by the look of things you food taste very good and very well prepared. Thank you very much. The fish is so fresh and fulfilling I don't think I have ever tasted food like this one .thanks nice keep cooking good Will bless and reward you.
@@feedandteach thank you very much and I hope you don't mind me asking can I use store bought short crust pastry to make beef batties sorry for all the questions my friend ✌️
It's no problem. Short crust can work but it's kinda crumbly, I would use puff pastry instead to get some flakiness. It would not really be a patty but as long as it tastes delicious who cares
But sea bass, not softfleshed freshwater Black Bass (tastes like old socks) or probably any other freshwater fish ( maybe catfish if from good pure water).
You really know a lot about cassava , we eat a whole lot of cassava I eat with brown stew it goes very well, that's why I like your chamber very much. Thank you Nic, I always remember home seeing you cook evertday, I used go food by her Unfortunately, I don't know what is nine night, please explain, thank you
"Escovitch" comes from the Spanish "escabeche" which is similar to the Italian "scapece" Both italy and spain have a similar type of recipe. In Italy, they usually make it with many small fish like smelt or sardine or anchovy. (that is, fresh anchovies, not the salty canned or jarred ones) There is a small difference in that pimento isn't used, but rather mint leaves.
Is it the shellfish which can be toxic that makes them transition? You know I don't eat shellfished either, bible says don't eat anything that creeps and crawls. 🤣🤣🤣
Changing from female to male is a common survival strategy among marine fishes regardless of their diet. But if you believe you shouldn’t est fish that have fed on items prohibited by Mosaic Law, you’re out of luck. There probably hasn’t been a fish hatched that hasn’t eaten crustaceans, molluscs, and worms during some stage of its life.
@@mollyLouM Been researching 2% of marine life display hermaphroditism, only a handful of fishes change gender, and I know suntan lotion polluting marine life causes gender issues, probably more for male fishes. I only asked about the consumption of shellfishes by Hogfishes, because it might be the link. Either way, I don't do creeping, crawling, pork, or anything you can pet. Shellfish and pork physically make me want to throw up, I'm just at the point subsconsciously. I would make a terrible dinner guest.
@@DavidJohnson-dc8lu My husband is an icthyologist and he wrote the book. Pollution has nothing to do with this type of gender change, nor does diet. Molluscs don’t necessarily creep or crawl and all fish I can think of eat arthropods (the group that includes lobsters, shrimp, and crabs) at some stage of their lives if you include the very tiny ones they start out with as hatchlings. Not all molluscs creep or crawl - scallops are free-living and swim around by clapping their shells together (they sleep and rest on the ocean floor but not sure that counts as crawling) and oysters and mussels are freeliving as larvae, before they attach themselves permanently to a substrate, rock or manmade. You’ve given me a lot to think about, so thanks!
@@mollyLouM Erm, why don't you just type in google " suntan lotion on marine life gender change?" Just do your own research. Also, research Endocrine Disruptors like plastic bisphenol A and tributyltin, GENDER BENDING humans and marine life. Shellfish, I just don't eat them, it is just that simple. Especially the ones that are benthic scavengers.
Looks very tasty, but I know there is no way I could eat a transgendered fish. I would rather cook with the scam of dried thyme🤣. Still the effort of your videos are Gold standard!

I never heard of hog fish

I feel like you're doing me wrong since I'm in England and can't cook this

Nope, the best tasting fish eat a lot of shelfish...Snapper and Groupers taste that good because the eat a lot of shrimps, small lobsters and crabs!

I had to pause video to comment. So basically this fish is transgender.
