80,000lb Excavator Stuck on Giant Landfill (Full Recovery)

  • 80,000lb Excavator Stuck on Giant Landfill (Full Recovery). It's very rare we get a job where we almost call it quits. This was one of those jobs. People think because Big Flipper is a 75ton rotator and Hulk is a 50ton rotator, they can lift those weights no matter what. The reality is those numbers are based in only one position: 30 degrees boom height and off the back fully retracted. In theory you will never lift like this. The moment you start extending and rotating, those numbers drastically reduce.
    Here, we were close to full extension and off the side, and this unit was elevated due to the landfill. I'm not sure the reason for the breakdown, but I believe it was engine failure. They tried at first to move it with the other excavator on scene and could not, which is when they called Pepe's to the rescue. I'm not one to walk away from a job, but seeing Big Flipper lean this hard was pretty tough. To get this heavy unit down from the top and in the corner would not be so "papitas" like all our container rollovers.
    Yet Alex and I didn't back down and after a few re-rig attempts, got this bad boy down and in the spot they wanted it so it can be worked on. Our Bailey's synthetic rigging made the hook up process easy, and Alex and I are not afraid to push our trucks to the limits. People always comment "when are you getting an M100" and for once I can say that truck would have been much appreciated here.
    I left this video long to really show you guys the thought process that goes on when plan A fails and you have to think of plan B and C on the spot. Really happy with the end result in hindsight, even though at the time it was very stressful. At the end of the day we accomplished the job and the customers were very satisfied; what did everyone think?

      No way, really? That’s awesome bro thank you for the referral! Curious as to why you turned it down, the distance or working environment? That street is TIGHT and a pain even for my trucks to get in position. Would have loved to see how a big huge crane would have handled this

    I don't think we've ever seen Big Flipper "struggle" with anything you've thrown at it. Both of those trucks are incredible. The finesse y'all have is unreal.

    One observation on your rigging. The pick points you used for Big Flipper were a balance point. Without a line on the bucket end, Hulk wasn't getting a lot of the load and was causing the bucket to go down when trying to lift the back. I realize the boom could move, especially if the hydraulic system was compromised, but a line on the bucket from Big Flipper seems like it would've helped give Hulk more of the weight.

    • @PepesTowingService
      @PepesTowingService  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +24

      You know your stuff and you hit the nail on the head. We always discuss the jobs and this one moment where I couldn't believe slipped us while rigging. We do a ton of cargo loaders at the airport and the principle is identical. Those are easy because Flipper can handle the weight while Hulk will act as a float/control. Our mistake here was exactly that, but even if Flipper had another line to the bucket it's still lifting more than the WLL. Just an overall crap (literally) job. Still tho I love comments like these, you're the first person to notice that.

    FYI (in case you didn't know): The rear of that machine is a ~15000lb counterweight. I think you've got Hulk rigged to the lift points on the counterweight. It can be removed for transport. It's actually a pretty neat mechanism. Might help in the future if you find any more excavators on garbage piles.

    The balance point was probably where you had Alex hooked up because it has the boom stick and bucket still on it. You might have been better off hooking one truck to each of the forward lifting points with an auxiliary line to the counterweight to adjust the balance if needed.

    "I've got an idea, why not back up to it?"
    Best words in this video. I promise I'm not knocking the channel. Plenty of stuff goes sideways and you can miss things DAILY.
    But yes, finding a way to put the motor and front end as far away from your load will always help.
    Not because those weigh so much (they still do) but that approach also means putting as much weight in metal alone on your load.
    Great work, everyone who's ever done this has definitely had a job that didn't go as well as you made this go.

    There should be a plate on the right side of the cab under the arm for the weight and if you kept the digger level when lifting the bucket won't dig in the floor when trying to turn it good job lads 👍

    Each wrecker should have had one front and one rear lifting point using spreader bars. It’s how they are lifted by cranes on jobs where they are put down a hole or shaft on some jobs. Not sure what your spreader bar lifting capacity is though you use.

    Excavators with engine failure can still be moved by disconnecting the main hydraulic hose from the broken-down excavator's own pump, and connecting it to a long umbilical powered by an external pump with its own engine. This enables the boom to be raised or lowered, the house to be slewed and the tracks to be driven. If it's a large excavator and the external pump / engine is small relative to the excavator's own pump and engine, then it might be slow going, but it would be enough to get it moved out of where it is and onto a lowboy.

    ran a D model 330 with a hydraulic thumb, and it was up towards 125000 on a 16 tire, we think it weighs about 88k, that one is probabley a little bit lighter, like 85k. Ive done some tow truck work, but mostly a heavy equipment operator, you had flipper just forward of center of mass, what was the thought process on not rigging to the front of the track frame?

    Dudes could’ve saved theirselves a lot of money and time by taking the bull shafts out of the final drives and letting that thing roll off that pile of trash. Glad you got the job but all that was totally unnecessary.

    You were pretty close on weight. They get in the low 80s when you start adding forestry caging, cylinder protection and other I dusty specific add ons. This one had a thumb and a decent size bucket. I think the big issue was starting with that type of serious weight 12 feet off the ground!!! Good thinking having them clear a landing for you after lifting it clear of the hill. Great job on a pretty sketch recovery!!!💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾

    could you have rigged a deck winch with a redirect from Hulk's rear outrigger and pulled it back that way to overcome the drag of the bucket?

  • @45KevinR
    @45KevinR 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    When you were both lifting from the front points it was pretty much hanging in balance. So the counterweight (which I thought might tax Hulk) was only just balancing the arm and bucket. So Alex and Flipper were catching most of the mass, if not all of the lift.
    I'd worry that the often suggested alternative of lifting from the bucket or arm might damage something. I'm guessing they might not be rated for 40k lb in reverse. These machines you rescue need big "lift here" plaques!
