For me, over the last couple of years, regarding walking at least. Step1: Take 2 or 3 painkillers. 2. Check the weather (for me too cold= massive reflex spasticity), 3. Take the bull by the horns and just go (throw caution to the wind). I know not very safe/sensible, but I have no-one to help/support/guide me. However, 'I have learned to walk again' (not a pretty sight) considering it took me almost a year to finally ditch the wheelchair. Still have to use a cane though, FOR ME, wheel chair to zimmer to quad stick to cane to a good few meters unaided about 18 months.

Good Morning Dr. Elyse. My name is Steve. I am 66 y.o.. I have no history of diabetes, high blood-pressure, or strokes in my family. I was 245 lbs, hgt 5-11, and dropped to 224 lbs as of last week. Prior to my medulla centered stroke on March 3rd 2023, which I woke up with, I was very active. Currently 3 months later i am walking on my own with some goofy limb and toe dragging. I ditched the wheelchair, the walker, and cane a while ago. I feel blessed to be what i feel is 85% functional on my effected left side. Here are some issues I have that perhaps you can give me guidance on. 1.) I still have severe numbness from my left side of my head to my left foot toes, and my entire left arm. Does this numbness ever leave? 2.) With this numbness I also have, what I call, severe con-stricture. This is the feeling of incredible tightness, like my left side is wrapped in an excessively tight ACE bandage and a clamp pressure on my back thru my chest. It is difficult to feel relaxed, get comfortable in any chair, and sleeping is not so great either. Pain-meds do nothing for this. Do you have any experience with acupuncture to relieve this maddening tightness and con-stricture? I feel a bit dizzy too, but this is mild compared to numbness and con-stricture. I am still doing OT & PT and walk at least 1/4 -1/2 mile each day, with no cane. I have done mild chainsaw work, push mow the lawn, bush hog my fields, and move heavy objects with assistance like furniture, tools. I am very slow in everything I do, but I try. I ache all the time. Any advice? I am sick of these feelings, but am thankful to God.Thank you for your site too!
I had my second stroke in June of 21. It took me almost a year to walk due to spastity. All the mucels in my left leg tried toove at the same time. I coukd notoce my leg. 3:14
I've been back on my feet but man I cannot use my left foot normally to save my life. I'm trying to work my butt off to regain normal movement functionality. Foot cramping, toes curling, tendonitis, eeek. I literally feel at war with myself and when I feel unwanted soreness and cramping I just keep moving it and ask it if it wants some more? Lol. I am just beyond sick of it and being tough with it. I want it resolved, like last year.
Believe, believe in recovery, it will come, it takes years, recovery can be done decades after the event. My recommendation is to put a dumbbell on the arm and leg in order to get a stretch. Make circular movements of the hands, legs, head. Gentle circular movements in all positions standing, sitting, lying down. Transfer weight to the injured leg, climb stairs with the injured leg. Sleep on a hard surface. Good luck with God's help.

I’m still numb on my whole right side. I had stroke 2 years ago no diabetes no high cholesterol or heart problems. They say possibly Covid or the shots caused my blood to clot after having Covid. I also got meningitis and pneumonia while in hospital. 42 days. I’m walking better but my right leg looks like I have polio now. I want to walk smooth again. The PT says heel to toe helps but I can’t get a smooth walk. I feel off balance one sided. Thanks for your help.
👋 and thanks for sharing the knowledge with all of us. My love one is four years post stroke and slowly progressing. I have learned to have patience on this recovery and got it, motivation and movement is the key. I was wondering if you can send a link or some information on the big walker with tires. We have learned so many things that yes the rehab place is the best but having key things at home maximize the time on training to get those repetitions in. Again, thank you! God Bless!
My dad was diagnosed with Cancer in April of this year. In October he had a minor accident which I believe might’ve caused him a stroke and days after, he lost half of his balance with a bad speech. He didn’t think of it as anything big at the moment because he didn’t know he had suffers a stroke until days after the accident where he wasn’t able to walk or hold himself up. He eventually was taken to the hospital and that’s when they found out he has a stroke. He was in the hospital for 3 weeks, in which he had an MRI done and noticed he had some bumps in his brain, doctors weren’t sure what it was so they operated him and we are waiting for the results. The day after surgery he came home which fell on a Monday, and by Sunday he completely lost all his speech.. is that normal to happen after a stroke? I’m so desperate to help my dad.. any advice would be appreciated
Hi Ric. I'm so sorry to hear about what happened to your dad. Would you mind sharing what kind of accident did your dad run into? I had a minor stroke myself about 2 months ago. I was in the hospital for 3 weeks. I've lost part of my speech but I can walk without a cane, at least at home.
Thank you for your videos. They have been very helpful. What do you do when the PT, OT and ST, discharge your elderly parent from rehab and they are showing signs of recovery, but not "big gain, functional" improvements, so they say? Mom is 92, but she was a very strong and independent person before the stroke. She could normally walk up to 2 miles and cook, clean and walk a flight a stairs throughout the day. In any case, she's in a wheel chair, but is moving her left side much better, and has some contracture and reflective movement in her right leg and right shoulder. She is determined and trying, but now we have no help from therapy. I do range of motion exercises with her (every day), but any extra advice is needed and appreciated. Thank you!
Wow! Your mom sounds like a rock star! I'm glad to hear she is continuing to make progress, but I'm so frustrated to hear your experience with therapy. My first step would be to contact her therapists and explain that she is determined and motivated to work, as well as not back to her "prior level of function." Often this is a goal in therapy that some insurance companies will allow therapists to continue to work towards goals. Sometimes you have to be the advocate for therapy when your therapists aren't. Second, I would look for therapy schools or non profit clinics nearby and see if they offer any low cost or free services. Third, if your mom's therapists aren't willing to take her back as a patient, ask them for specific home exercise/activity regimens you all can go through with her in different stages. If she begins making more progress, you could even reach back out to her therapists and ask if she can return as a patient. Fourth, the more you can get and keep her moving, the better! Any movement is better than none at all. So keep doing what you're doing. Sorry this was so long. It's something I'm really passionate about and generally frustrated with in the U.S. healthcare system. I wish both you and your mom the best. If there are specific issues she's having, let me know and I may consider a video on it! ❤️
