    I applied for a job on January 9th and didn't hear a word from the HR department. Then I received an email extending me a job offer on June 10th. It was so weird not even talking to anyone about the job. I ultimately turned the offer down because the family situation has changed. It was also a big pay cut. There will be other opportunities so I am not worried.

    I’ve been referred to the hiring manager in two occasions, so we’ll see.😅

    2:00 HR here. I think at first many new applicants do the happy dance when they see “referred” reading into “referred to the hiring manager.” “Referred” has a different meaning in the government than the private sector. I’ve also done recruiting/staffing in the private sector. In the private sector “referred” means your names goes to hiring manager like hey you should hire Bob. In the government all it means is HR reviewed your resume, you meet the MINIMUM qualifications & put in a list with the other 100 or 1,000 other people who met the the minimum qualifications AKA anyone else who didn’t get a screen out email.

    Do all jobs check references cause I haven’t had to attach any for the jobs I applied for…wonder if they ask later?

    • @armandcuret1

      Yes, they should. It usually happens after the interview, if they are considering selecting you. Sometimes it can happen before the interview, which DoD has been doing.
      I would also suggest adding references on your resume.

    I am a physician and applied for a job - usajobs redirected me to the Coast Guard. I never received a confirmation email, but when I check the status on the Coast Guard website, it says application received. Should I follow up on this? And if so, and advice as to how? Thank you!

    70 apps, abt 15 referrals.
    should be some more that close at the end of the month. we will see what happens. More referrals i hope.

    • @armandcuret1

      I would reply to the person who setup the interview and ask for a status update. I would repeat every two weeks until you have an answer.

    I applied for a job on USAJobs that does not close out until September of this year. Is it possible to hear something back before the close out date?

    • @armandcuret1

      It's possible if it was a roster or public notice type announcement. Those job announcements will select candidates throughout the year or a specific period of time.
      I would double check the job announcement, because sometimes it will tell you if they are planning on using it to hire multiple people throughout a time period.

    • @armandcuret1

      Some job announcements open and close the same day.
      You will never know the exact reason but it's usually because HR is overwhelmed, they need someone quickly or it could be for an internal hire.

    Does working for the TSA count as a government job? Would this increase my chance of getting hired in another government agency in the future?

    • @armandcuret1

      Yes, it does. The TSA has an interagency agreement, which allows most permanent TSA employees to apply and be considered for vacancies in Competitive Service agencies.
