ℹ️About the episode:
This is the second time we've been to the Monterey Pensilua, Carmel and Big Sur. It was just as stunning as we remember. This time we peeled the onion one more layer and did things we "missed" the first time. Such as taking a short hike to the beach, staying at Pfieffer State Park, visiting McWay Falls and eating at Big Sur Tap House. Have you ever been told, "you missed it?!?". It usually comes from people that have been somewhere a dozen times, which begs the question, what did they do on their first visit? Bottom line, RV the way that makes you happy. If you want to go fast to keep the family entertained, go fast! Want to go slow and see things off the beaten path, have at it! No matter how you travel by RV, you'll be making memories that we all have in common.

We live in Santa Barbara. My wife, a year ago, walked from Santa Barbara to San Francisco on the California Coastal Trail. I was her support crew so I got to drive along this whole area. I have to agree it's one of the most beautiful areas in North America, and I loved staying at Pfeiffer State Park. Nice vid, always amazed at your footage and ability to edit these things in only a week.
Thanks.
This video clip was so special. My hubby and I lived in San Jose when he was still alive, and 17 mile drive was one of our favorite places to go with our 1984 944 Porsche. Seeing your video of that area made me very nostalgic. I moved to Oregon in 2002, (by myself) and have not been back. Thank you so so much for the wonderful memories reminder.
I am a us army veteran and was stationed at DLI and Fort Ord in 89 and 91. Your footage of Seventeen Mike Drive and Asilomar...and Big Sur, made me homesick cry. It’s the most beautiful place in the US. I so miss it. Thanks for sharing!
Caleb has the best contributions! So fun!
I'm a Carmel local, not sure if you were able to get to Carmel beach and let Charlie run off-leash, but if not it's a good reason to come back and see the massive joyful dog packs running and playing in the surf. It was lovely seeing home through your eyes as it's all too easy to miss the perpetual beauty in everyday surroundings :)
Don't forget Trish's obsession with the silly hand that was super hilarious! Now you have Charlie and just silly Caleb.
Wow! You guys really hit it home with your video! Yes! Get the Airstream! We’re from the SF Bay Area, and we bought our 2016 27” FB Flying Cloud from Bay Area Airstream where you visited. After two hours there, we drank the kool-aid, and we were signing papers...no regrets to this day! The beauty and design are a win win for us. The lifestyle and camaraderie are second to none. We attend our loosely functioning Airstream club’s rallies four times a year, and we travel with our Airstream at least once a month to Monterey. And now our youngest attends UC Santa Barbara so we’re rediscovering the Paso Robles area again. We keep the Airstream there while we drive down to Santa Barbara to do the “quarter break shuffle”. Our son comes back up with us, and we stay and re-explore. Sometimes moving hq to Monterey to visit with our other son in Santa Cruz. And while it’s all the same places, it’s always a rediscovery for us especially now that we’re empty nesters. I like to think we live by a quote that says, “The real voyage of discovery lies not in seeking new landscapes but in seeing with new eyes.” Can’t wait to see what adventures your Airstream will bestow on you! Safe travels!
We live near DC. My husband had a conference in San Jose 11 years ago. My son and I joined him. While he was in the conference my son and I toured San Francisco. We did everything. It had been my 3rd trip there over the years. Our son had a summer session at LMU for CTYers in LA a week later, so we spent the entire week driving down the 1. We had a blast. Got home and people were telling me you can get to LA in 5-8 hours from San Francisco. I kept asking "Why would you want to do that" if you didn't have to. Seems like I visit the San Francisco area at least once a decade. Love that area of the country.
Caleb is hilarious! He can deliver subtle jokes that you catch two seconds after, making them even more savoury. "I'm not a hoarder."
I Watched this from Mallacoota in Australia, the town that 4000 people were trapped during the recent bushfires. With everything so black and burnt it was so nice that this weeks episode was filled with lush green views and you all look so ecstatic to be there😄.
Love how Marc assumed Trish would do his packing, and she was like...Noooooooooooooope!
That and the finger mustache were primo parts of this video. I do miss the tiny finger hands that Trish used to do back in the day. haha
Wait until he learns the food doesn't invite him to 'be our guest' like he was promised in beauty and the beast
Marc... BBQ.
Even a hot dog on a stick.... My man - we are afraid for your safety at this point.
We did this route from San Francisco down to San Diego a few years ago. It really is a spectacular route and you are right that you need to take time over it. Don't rush, look at whatever takes your fancy, and above all, just enjoy it. Look at the little communities on the way - San jose, Carmel, etc - look at the natural wonders - the waterfall you mentioned, Big Sur State Park, etc - it is a fantastic trip, and while the wonders of Europe and Africa are also spectacular, exploring the USA beats it all into a cocked hat (English expression!).
Trish you can get heat pads in those seats to have heated seats. Really good idea to get the firewood, really. Charlie is happy with a stick under the Jeep. Caleb is having the best trip. Tear drop is not a mistake, you just "really" need to plan where to go. Glad you guys are having fun and enjoying it more.
I HAVE HAD THE WORST DAY EVER.... and then this happened....
“If I walk in front of the picture will I be in it?”
- “ yes, just walk slowly...”
I tried not to laugh. But I find myself giggling an hour later. Ah. Thanks for the cheer up.
✌🏻🇿🇦
I grew up in the central coast. Day trips from Los Gatos to the coast and her beaches, and later from Gilroy, always left us with a deep gratitude for the beauty of where we lived.
I ran the Coastal highway from Seattle through Oregon and into California and it was completely amazing! And i think everyone who has owned a Camper or RV has a soft spot for a Airstream! I love them.
I'm glad you got the chance to go to Big Sur. When I was in the Army I was fortunate to be stationed in Monterey and rode my motorcycle down to Big Sur every weekend , weather permitting. It's my all time most favorite place on earth and my wife and I go back every couple of years to visit. Ciao! Greg
That 17 mile drive is very possibly the most beautiful 17 miles in the whole Of the US. Did it about 20 years ago and it still haunts my soul. Color me green 😬
If you haven't done it, Key Largo to Key West
Being from the UK your videos give us some great ideas for US road trips rather than RV trips, we traveled HW1 in September 2019 so it's bringing back some amazing memories, thank you, looking forward to seeing Solvang again, so cool
You passed through my neighborhood. We recently from Bakersfield to Marina, CA in December, we are 10 mins north of Monterey. You actually filmed our sand dunes Marina State Beach. I hoped to catch you driving on Hwy 1 but sadly no. I am glad you love our coast line as much as we do. In 2022 there will be a new state park to camp at here in the peninsula (Fort Ord) so you can return with your Airstream and we can show you more. Big Sur State Park is beautiful. Pismo Beach has become overrated and crowded over the years but glad you enjoyed California's Central Coast.
TRISH....YOU ROCKED THAT TOUR DE FALLS!!!!! GOSH...A NATURAL BORN WRITER AND YOUR VOICE IS SO CALMING... THE CINEMATOGRAPHY WAS SICK. YOU BOTH ROCK....AND JR. IS PRETTY ENTERTAINING AS WELL.
I would get a F350 single wheel crew cab with an 8 ft bed... you’ll get better mpg (get the diesel) and then get a pickup bed cap for the bed for storage, Charlie gets the back seat which will be completely flat for his dog bed when fold up back seat...the airsteam doesn’t have all that much storage for stuff... you’ll love it 😍
This is our setup. Works great!
CavTrav it’s the only thing that makes sense, they should have kept their F450
Trailer and truck for now and then when Caleb is on his own you can get a van, you will love the ease of traveling in a van. We LOVE our Travato ;-)
You folks are genuine. Very enjoyable video to watch.
An Airstream is an absolute dream to tow! You find yourself checking the rear view mirror to make sure you haven’t left without it! You forget it is behind you because it tows so well! We would have kept ours forever but unfortunately it was completely flattened by a tree that came down in a wind shear! Thank God we were not in it at the time! Flatter than a pancake!
Noooooooo, I want more !!! That is the fastest 22 minutes ever !!!
Beautiful and fun, thank you !!
Oh and tell celeb to stay away from cliff edges, he is going to give me a heart attack 🙀
I agree too! Freaking me out!!
@3:52 😂 Caleb, photo bomb with helmet.. too funny! @2:21 Marc...Please share your figures, data, your numbers, depreciation on why your not going with a motorized unit? Break it down.. walk us through it....newbies need to know! Brent
Hwy 1 is awesome. I am old so I recall driving along the coast in the mid-1950s before it was discovered by tourists. Nepenthe is another must if you are in the Big Sur area. So happy your family had a great experience.
We're from Arizona and one year we did Tijuana, MX to Sequim (Port Angeles), Washington via the 1 all the way end to end to see family in Wa for thanksgiving. Such an amazing trip. We had more wine to go with our turkey than we knew what to do with.
The memories! I'm bawling!!! It's been 40-50 years! We went to that area, every year growing up. Big Sur, Pfieffer, SLO, Santa Barbara, Solvang, the missions (Santa Barbarbra, Santa Inez, La Purisma, San Buena Ventura) such great memories. Thanks!!!
Have you guys considered truck campers? Bigfoot and Northernlite are really good campers. The cool thing about truck campers is no need to tow, you can fit in any camp spot a car can go into and for the long stays, you can set up the camper as a basecamp.
Good lord, you should’ve called me. Just go for the Airstream and never look back. I have an incredible Texas Bugger I built for off-roading. Like bullet proof, and will sleep 6+ (2 inside and 4 in the topper tent). And will follow my 4x4 anywhere. But my Airstream is heaven on wheels. And my much better half is so much happier traveling. So get the Airstream and keep the teardrop... I really can’t describe the joy of our Airstream with the history and all. Absolutely love it and haven’t lost $1 in value in 2 years.
Damn you guys are living the life. Everyone looks fit, you have an amazing dog, nice roomy car, awesome scenery, you guys are seriously living the damn life!!! Maybe one day I’ll do the same.
Charlie is just EVERYTHING!!!!!!! He’s probably the BEST part of camping for you guys. Love him❤️❤️
The little bitty hand on Trish's finger when she was wiping her hair back...cracked me up. She is so funny, and they are a great team together! Keep up the awesome content! Thanks!
Trish you should do audio recordings for pay...your voice is easy to listen to when you share the history/facts about an area you are visiting.
Great video as always!!!
ASMR'ish IMHO!
Agreed!!! Sleep stories
Yes, I enjoyed that part too!
Indeed!!!
She used to do a podcast that was great. I really miss that, but completely understand that, sadly, it's not all about me. :-)
PCH always hits the nail on the head regardless of what time during the year you go! So glad to see everyone so stoked taking it all in, including Charlie! Hopefully you had time to hit the dunes while in Pismo Beach!
They better hurry! The Coastal Commission is considering closing the beach/dune park area to OHV!
Adam Gray I’d hate to see that happen but thanks for the update.
Hey guys! James here. Shop foreman at Airstream of South Carolina. Hope to see you for routine maintenance...or any other needs you have... when you make a trip through Columbia, SC!
It looks like you had a wonderful trip. Charlie barking at the beginning set my dog off. He would not stop barking at Charlie. It was so adorable. Next time you want to drive the California Coast, try going north on hwy 1. I don't know what the camping is like, but all the small communities that you pass through are really beautiful.
I lived in California for 29 years and still love it. Not sure I could live there again but I'd visit at every opportunity. So much diversity and splendor. Charlie is just so cute and lovable :-)
Ahhh. Trish running on beach with Charlie... that is my kind of trip! That is pure joy for both! More!
We love the Central Coast and Hwy 1 too. I have stayed in Big Sur for weeks as I was the geologist for Caltrans monitoring the cleanup of the landslides you mentioned in 1983-84. One of the most exciting moments was when a CHP helicopter flew down from Napa to shuttle us to the top of the landslide by diving off the closed highway toward the ocean before veering up. At the time it was the largest landslide repair in California history moving over 8 million yds3 of dirt and rock.
A year ago we drove up Hwy 1 in our RV stopping to watch the elephant seals fight near Hearst Castle and stayed overnight at one of two Forest Service campgrounds in Big Sur overlooking the ocean.
Thanks for bringing us along.
We love our 25' Airstream Flying Cloud. Once you start thinking about an Airstream it is difficult to walk away.
Loved the fact it’s not rush rush, that you can relax and take it in
So glad you are cruising down one of the prettiest parts of our state! And no kidding@the crazy traffic in CA.
Love Hwy 1! I’ve driven it 3 or four times. The last time was the first time with the whole family; in 2006. It was week 3 of a 25-Day road Trip and they were all just worn out. After Pebble Beach the family all fell asleep. I kept waking everyone up, saying, ‘you gotta see this!’ They would grumble and go back to sleep. They did not wake up until Southern CA. In all my trips I still have not made it to Hearst Castle. This inspired me to go back to the central CA Coast!
We rented a class C back in 2007 when we owned a 32’ bumper pull to help us determine if we were going to buy a class A or C after we enjoyed our travel trailer a little longer. We did the California 1 all the way up to Klamath where we camped for a week and enjoyed the Redwoods. It was an awesome trip for our sons who had only seen the East Coast previously during our Military duty and who were raised in Missouri during their adolescence. It also focused our future RV plans onto a class A. We bought a diesel pusher in 2012 and we are now looking at a Gas class A for some full time adventure just the hubby and myself. Love seeing the Country from an RV!
I love Caleb’s antics in the background. I’m always thrilled to hear anything he has to say. He’s quite the character. Keep up the great videos guys. Love it!
Yes! I love Caleb!
One of the first things that comes to mind when I get to Big Sir is the smell of the redwoods. I grew up on the central coast. Coming from the San Jose end you must have driven through Carmel, Beautiful white sand beaches. We usually stayed at an old privately owned campground called Fernwood. There is a bar and grill with a couple cabins on the road side just North of the Pfeiffer state park. The campground is just below it with a stream running through it and hundreds of mature redwoods. On the weekends they have live music usually 1 or 2 person bands at the bar and grill. You might even run into a flower child or two. It's a gorgeous place. On your way South if it's not to late don't miss Moro bay. Have fun I'll be watching.
Trish’a voiceovers are the best! So calming and relaxing, you guys need to write a book and have her record the audiobook, or do a story on the calm app or something like that.
Long time viewer, first time commenting (I think!). Absolutely love you guys, your videos, everything about the channel. Especially love when Caleb is mimicking you in the background! You guys do your own adventure and don’t worry about what others say...cuz you guys do it right! I am most thankful that you have a family that appears to be filled with love and cooperation! And love how you and Trish work together. Man, what I wouldn’t give to be on the road now....analysis paralysis! Soon, tho!
Marc Trish that route along the coast is amazing!!
Marc and Trish
Great video as always. My wife and I are so happy for yall and Thank You for Blessing Us with the wonderful content.
Be safe traveling and God Bless Yall!!
BTW: Marc, you are not the only HUSBAND that assumes his WIFE is packing his bag, while he is preparing the other stuff. LOL!!! I am guilty as Charged!!!!
Can't wait for Pismo Beach. I grew up there and live in Reno now but we take our 43'6"fifth wheel back there every year. Have fun.
Welcome to CA... over crowded , over priced , but beautiful in some areas. We moved 20 years ago from CA to MT ! Never looked back
Beautiful part of the country
Your Family continues to make me Smile....AND! Keep MY Daydream, of "one day".... ❤
Loved this episode. The teardrop is growing on me more and more because of how easily you guys travel and get into the COOLEST places. I knew that would end up being the case though as I'm a nature person more than a people person. LOL. (I do fine with people but I also get easily irritated when the "stupid" comes out. hahahah) I enjoyed seeing Charlie and Caleb running on the beach. haha. BTW, I don't think you can ever really go wrong with an Airstream. Especially considering some of the places that your family enjoys getting into. Class "A" motorhomes are really nice on days of travel and easier to set up a lot of the time but aside from having ready access to your kitchen and bathroom while travelling that's about it. I never liked the idea of my home having the engine in it (for when engine work has to be done). Plus ANY work on those beasts, relating to the engine, is ALWAYS a pain in the back side. I think the Airstream is the way to go; especially since you've seen the floor plan and know where you can get a used one. (Hey! Save that depreciation if you can. That's my motto!) Safe travels y'all!
I have felt that the teardrop is not a mistake the “mistake” is the season knew you would have better time in warmer weather
It's a fair point. Warm weather = :) in any rig, especially a teardrop.
Good to see more of Charlie. If you get the Airstream Mark gets to have another Super Duty!
Voiceover Trish is awesome! Great video as always.
Charlie, like all of your children, is very well suited to be a part of this excellent journey which we are privileged to glimpse each Sunday. Thanks for taking us along!
Loving Trish “in rare form” at the beginning. And Pacific waves and Central California coastline are *so* good for my heart and soul!! Thank you for sharing this much needed trip. ☀️🌊💚💙
Your trips this season is really bringing back a lot of great memories for the wife and I. You have been hitting soooo many of our favorite places. It’s been three years since we last were at the ocean, but we are going to fix that this fall! Going up the coast from San Jose to the Canadian border or until we freeze, what ever comes first. It’s s weird when I see a three second clip of you on the road, and I know exactly we’re you are!
At 70+ years of age we too are pondering retiring our Teardrop to stays at the lake, short summer trips. As you have found out they are tough camping in winter...or up in Yukon and Northwest Territories where we mostly play. So much fun seeing you have fun tho...its nicer when its warm, eh? Get the Airstream but try and keep the Teardrop. We are looking at the small Bambi or Caravel but they are stupid expensive in Canada.
my dad watches you so much he thinks your part of our family
I just introduced my 4 year old to the phrase ‘check yourself before you wreck yourself’ last week. Great video and footage as always.
The opening and closing shots are so incredible! Thank you Trish for voicing over your trip
Awesome video!!! "Really, really, really..." liked it! 🤣
Couldn't help but to laugh watching Trish cut on an avocado with a plastic knife. Lol 😁
Justin Morton that was fun wasn’t it? She has mad skills with a plastic knife & avocado skin!
Oh wow!! My husband and I started following you two years ago. We were so inspired, we purchased a vintage Airsteam. Spent the first year renovating it, and finally got to enjoy several trips in it last year. You'll love the Airstream community. I feel like we're family now...lol!!
Lol, the honeymoon is over! We did the PCH on a bike a couple years ago. Just amazing. We rode east and then south through Yosemite and the desert then west through LA and north along the PCH and back to SF. Great trip.
Live in San Diego, would love to retire in Cambria/Morro Bay. Driven the 1 many times, tight, but beautiful. Best wishes on your next purchase, we lug a 44' toyhauler with 15.5' garage, but mostly boondock in the desert now. Being away is where to be! Caleb, no more green ingestibles from under the back seat, buddy. 🤢😂
Loved Trish's voice over.
Love your channel!! Been watching for about 5 months now. You will love the Airstream! We never would have considered one until we 'accidentally' walked into one at an RV show 2 years ago. We were downsizing from a 38' Sierra bumper tow with 2 slide outs and we had our minds set on a smaller 'retro' type camper with one slide, but once we walked in the AS all bets were off. My main criteria were 'must have at least one slide and tandem axel'. I don't miss the slides at all! Love all the widows!! Can't wait to see you in your new rig! We have a 2018 Flying Cloud 25FB. We want to make that trip you just did in a couple of years. Long drive from Atlanta, GA! Keep up the great work!
Oh Man ! Earlier I told my husband I wanted to go to Big Sur and now I get to go with you guys ! 🤗
My wife, son and I did this exact trip, stood where you stood at the tidefall stayed at that state park all in a tent up and down the coast. One of our best trips to date. If you have time you MUST MUST check out El Matador beach at low tide when all the caves are exposed, absolutely unbelievably amazing experience !!
Love that area of CA. Was stationed (USAF) on the High Desert (V'ville), then, to San Jose area upon discharge. Enj'd the Central Coast area a LOT. Also, the Central Valley (think US 99/I-5); very different, but, the views of farmland/ranchland. Miss it, still; relocated to SW Iowa to help w/ my aged mom abt 8 yrs ago. Thanks for bringing so many memories back, guys! Y'all Be Safe!
That's exactly what I am living! Enjoying life discovering the beautiful places! Be safe everyone, life is shot, slow down...
Aw man, we used to go camping with my grandparents who always had a very nice motor home, or big 5th wheel, and we had an 18 foot wilderness lol. Great times and memories. Hopefully your kids enjoy time with the grands, they'll miss these days and conversations! Safe travels and great work with these videos!
I have really enjoyed this Teardrop season, where you have gone and the great video , and I have noticed Trish having a slight "is this really gonna work" moment , on every video and then making it work and making it fun.
I loved the Charlie Seal of Approval for the Airstream. He clearly appreciates a little luxury but you'll turn him into an adventure dog one day . Glorious scenery and places you would want to take home with you. I agree - a different trip each time you visit somewhere, also different with each form of accommodation, season, company..... Thanks also for sharing the excitement of travel.
We flew from Canada to San Francisco rented a car and did almost this same trip down to Anaheim. Amazing vacation the kids still talk about it.
I know your not big on touristy stuff but we like aquariums, the one in Monterey was the best we have ever been in so far.
My parents did the trip from San Diego up the 1 and the 101 with a 21' trailer when I was a teenager in the 70s. We traveled and camped A LOT all over the U.S. and Baja but that trip was the most influential for me in so many ways. I now live on the south Oregon coast.... Glad your son is getting that opportunity too! I'm in Gold Beach, Oregon sooooooooooo, if you get up here and give me a head's up I'll bring you dinner!
Wow, EPIC Vid of ur Hwy 1 Adventure! Three years ago I built a small trailer for my Girls, Lab and a Mix (80lbs. each) to pull with my Harley. Girls have their own compartment with a windshield and the front half is for our stuff and camping gear. We r in Southern CA and have done several trips up the coast, tent camping along the way. Sooo much Fun! I hope you guys discovered Avila Beach just south of SLO. Charlie will LOVE the Dog Beach there!!! Carry On!
I grew up in this neighborhood! I loved visiting again with you. Our last visit after landing in San Jose we drove over to Santa Cruz to catch the 1 to our hotel in Marina. I'm looking forward to more memories as you continue down the coast.
Y’all have the best attitudes I’ve ever seen. So pleasant to watch.
Wonderful episode. Started my RV fund at my CREDIT Union on Friday! My children are parents now. So, I will be Me`Me` alone or with the grands. Thinking I'm going to go with an Truck RV. They seem to be a better option for me. Thank you for the wonderful content!!
Caleb and Charlie are just the cutest 🥰🥰
A definite advantage of a tear drop, "look at that, let's stop!" you can and park. And getting into small places like this state park. Not true with a 40' class A towing a car. Life is full of choices, but at least we are all out here doing it!!
I could tell that this was a favorite trip, just by your expressions. What a beautiful drive!
Been there many times it's awesome. Your right if you never been there you must GO thanks guy's
Wow she's lost some weight! You also, this is good for you guys! Your family is loved! Be safe.
lived near Pismo Beach for a year at Vandenberg AFB. Lovely area, loved going to Pismo. SLO has the best little farmer's market every Thursday night.
We hope you guys get the Airstream! We have a 2019 30FB Bunk and love it. You won't have any regrets!
We mainly do weekend trips with our 1 & 3 year old but have a 17 day Canada trip planned for this summer.
Airstreams are nice (a bit pricy, but, ok...), but, I'd be concerned with amt of storage, both inside and outside. Y'all Be Safe!
Thank you KYD (and thanks to Caleb for the "back seat entertainment!!). We're building our "things to do, see and places to eat" lists for our retirement to full timing (in 3 years)!
Beautiful drive down the 1! We made a week of it flying into Ontario, CA about 9 years ago when our son was 4 Months Old. Made our way up through Mammoth, Yosemite and finally San Francisco where jumped on the 1. Drove all the way to the South End at Dana Point after passing through Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur, San Simeon... finished up in San Diego via the I-5 where we spent the 4th of July. Back up to Ontario to fly home to Texas after 1 week and exactly 1,500 Miles.
Looking forward to your next rig and the adventures ahead! Safe travels to ya'll.
Caleb had me laughing at the end😂👍
Gorgeous scenery of course.
I'll have to admit, I had reservations about the Tear Drop when you first showed it, but some of your best adventures have been with it. At least, with your outstanding video and narrative, you've made it seem that way. You guys are great ! Thank you !
The tear drop is a bit small, but I couldn't imagine doing that drive with their 5th wheel.
Air Stream is a no brainer. Can’t wait to see your new rig!
I so look forward to Sunday nights to watch your channel!! Tonight was good incredible 😍🙌!! Thank you and God Bless you and be safe!! I had a relative many years ago they retired and lived in their airstream in Florida!! This was in the 90's so I'm sure they have come a long way in making them nicer.
