After seeing this I think when I get ready to full time, I'm going to take everything out of the house that will go into the fifth wheel toy hauler and then just stick a big sign up out in the yard, "HOUSE AND CONTENTS FOR SALE." Be safe out there, my prayers are with you and the family.

When we moved across the country, my wife was able to tap into her “military child” upbringing and use her “are you emotionally attached to this” question with me and when I hesitated she would say “someone else needs it”. It helps a pack rat like me to have a spouse that had to learn at a young age how to downsize.

My wife is awesome at keeping our house tidy and not hoarding anything. We're always looking at what we can get rid of. When the day comes for us to RV full time, it'll be an easy transition for us.
And wow, that last few mins of nostalgia gave me goosebumps. We have two boys the same ages as yours and I still can't get over how much they grow in 4 yrs. Cheers to you as always!

Boy does that bring back memories!! I have watched you guys from day one and watched you all grow. It makes you feel like family as silly as that sounds. I just retired and when this virus calms down, we are off in the RV. Not full time, but any time! All the best to you and yours.

I have two regrets. 1. Keeping things out of sentimental value, then selling they five years later for much less. 2. Paying to store stuff. I paid more than I would have spent to buy new. I had a box in the garage when I moved. Marked "living room". I stored it for 22 years, finally opened it and it was coffee table magazines and a brass alligator. Wha...??

My husband and I are young empty nesters in our mid-forties and we just bought a travel trailer. Your adventures and KYD philosophy have been instrumental in helping us arrive at the decision to travel more.

Marie Kondo: "Does it spark joy?' is a good question to ask whilst holding each piece. If not, thank it for its service and let it go. She also says that sentimental items you can take a photo of it and then let it go. They have worked for me!

We built shelves from 1x2 and 1/4” plywood. Using cross supports in back. Each freestanding -4 shelf case used one sheet of plywood. This allowed access to everything with a walkway. Less damage to the items and less stress when something was needed.

    Great to see the beginning.
I have the opposite problem, I don't want to keep anything but because I have a Barndominium my family wants me to be the storage unit. I have learned to say no. And that has been hard for me.
God bless you and your family.

Needed this! We are doing round 3 of downsizing since we have our new rig and more "view" but less storage. We love it but we are having to get rid of more stuff. It's a good thing! Simple is better always! Watching this, I cannot tell you how much respect and admiration I have for you as parents. Your children are phenomenal and so "together". Love watching them grow up and "out" and seeing what their lives are becoming. It feels like we have known you all our lives (even though it's only been 4 years) and it's so fun to watch the changes that we all go through but you make positive and fun! Thanks for keeping everything in perspective and giving us food for thought, a better perspective on life and "dips", and ways to make our lives better. Your family has been a blessing to us all and we can't thank you enough for sharing your lives, your philosophy, and your family with us!

4 years ago I sold my entire life off and moved to South America in two trips, with a total of 8 suitcases. I've kept it simple and it was the best decision I ever made. Minimal and content. And not much I would keep either. I could easily sell off most of this too.

  • @raymondschneider5217

Marc and Trish, when you showed the boxes w/ the #'s on them (for storage), it reminded me of when I moved from CA to the midwest. I used a Word.doc, but, the same principle; with a modification. Instead of "just" a number, I used a "code ltr AND a number;" e.g., LR-1, LR-2, BR1-1, BR1-2, BR2-1, BR2-2 (Living Room, Bedroom #1, Bedroom #2), then, writing (later transcribing) the contents as they went into that box. I have to say, it made unpacking a LOT easier. Actually, when the movers got to the new property, I had the boxes separated by room (LR, BR-1, BR-2, K(itchen) 1, K-2) in the garage, so it made it easier as each room was unboxed. You had some very good tips, indeed; loved the one-year rule (not used in a year = it goes!
Hope everyone is doing well, during this time of virus.
    Y'all Be Safe!

We've been having those storage unit conversations too... especially since I know that in ours there is a box of my great grandmother's wall sconces that have not been unpacked since her death in 1976... some boxes have become a tradition of being passed along unopened. Stay healthy. Blessed be.

You had me in tears! The downsizing has been so rough! We’re taking it one day at a time. We do want land to set our RV and then build a cabin, so we need to be very careful not to let go of crucial tools and favorite pieces, but at the same time recognize what stuff was never that important anyway. Thanks for posting!

We cleaned out our storage 2 months ago. Luckily the universe gave us a bit of a nudge to get rid of everything we didn’t need... rats got it and ate everything while we were on the road...
It gave us a chance to purge. Purge expensive items and items with much sentimental value, but purge none the less and we felt so much better after! It gives us some piece of mind when we get back on the road!

It was touching to see you buying Ginger, moving out of your house, Maddie, kids when they were young, getting ready for your "6 month trip," etc... And the song at the end, wow!!! Brought tears to my wife's eyes. We've been following along with you guys from the first season and this was touching. You guys actually inspired us to go out and get our travel trailer in 2017. It is a good video. We have to have a storage unit one that we are sharing with hubby's aging parents that we moved here locally to be by our daughter as we travel. We are going to put more in the unit at first but plan later to digitize photos and reduce even more. I am right there with Trish as I love my kitchen tools and will be packing them up for a short time as we do not know how long we will be on the road as fulltimers. If it becomes a longtime lifestyle for us then we will downsize more since we don't have to right now with sharing a unit. You two sound like us right now! I remember that video of craw-fish catching. April 30th one month away. OH my it is finally coming! 😊 Wow the first video seems forever ago! Thanks for all the entertainment you all provide.

My husband and I met in 2013 and married in 2016. He had lost his wife of 30 yrs to cancer, and my ex left after 27 yrs of marriage. We both have grown kids and had to do some major downsizing to combine households. Now we're a year away from my husband's 2nd retirement from the military. We bought our first RV ("Serenity") this past spring so we can travel and find a new forever home!! We're planning to spend the next year purging and getting rid of all of things we held onto. Letting go of sentimental things is truly a struggle, but videos like this are so inspiring!!

I can relate. Three years ago, we needed to clean out my father-in-law’s house after he moved into Assisted Living. My in-law’s hadn’t thrown anything away in over 50 years. Last year, we had to move him into Skilled Nursing and disperse even more. I recently needed to go through the same ordeal with my parent’s house after moving them into Assisted Living. There was 30 years of clutter and useless documents. Last year when we sold our house, we used the principle of “do we want our daughter to have to sort through and discard this when we go?” There were numerous trips to Habitat for Humanity, The Salvation Army, and the dump.

I also used plastic clear storage bins...I set up 'Heritage Boxes' for both my kids ages ago that contain precious items from birth through high grad as well as first career education, etc. These bins will be given to the kids when I hit the road, better part of downsizing is passing memories on 😎

Ok somebody tell my how the kids aged so much, Marc did a little bit and Trish aged absolutely none...how is that possible. I'm not understanding the physics behind this witchcraft lol. Great video guys and awesome look down memory lane.

Interesting tip on how to organize the list of things in storage! I actually used that same idea to create a list of what was in boxes for a friend that was moving in February!

We basically did the same thing just over two years ago Marc and Trish. We moved a 3bd/3bath house into a 10x30 storage unit and hit the road full time, before we bought our RV. We now have a 10x10 storage unit. Our oldest lucked out and got most of the furniture when he moved into his own place last year.
Another great video! Stay heathy! Stay safe, hope live continues to be an adventure & see you on the road!

After my father passed away, I had to clean out the house so I could sell it. After donating all the furniture to the needy, donating all the clothing, I ended up with a 10 x 25 foot storage unit.I filled it from side to side, front to back and top to bottom. 100% full. In it was mostly my dads stuff, some of my mom and brother and a lot of my own. It started out at $250/month. After three years it was going up to $350/ month. I needed to get rid of a lot of the stuff. My wife bought me two sheds, 8 x 10 each which equals about 2/3 of the storage unit. Some stuff was just to sentimental to get rid of, so those two sheds are full now. I ended up getting rid of 9 TV sets, two engines, one transmission and a lot of other junk. Now that I'm retired, I can take time to go through everything and get rid of some more. In case you're wondering about the two sheds when they get empty, one will be where I keep all my tools that I don't need in the garage. Mostly woodworking tools, the other will be storage for whatever. I had two other sheds already. One has the ride on lawn mower, snowthrower and other yard related items. the fourth shed will eventually be removed since it is falling apart. This will give me the room to store the TT and at least two of my cars (I have seven). This will make life easier for sure.

Great video, thank you! This is totally relevant to me at the moment. I just cleaned out my storage and have put all my stuff in my friends garage while I pick through I want I want (and what I should) pack into my motorhome. Good tips, thanks! I'm finding downsizing organizing is stressy because there is clutter everywhere while I figure out this massive life-sized Tetris puzzle.

When we had to downsize from a 2000sqft bungalow on 3acres to a 1220sqft house on a postage stamp size lot I gave the 4 kids a tomato box & said this is for all your treasures you want to keep. They nodded. When we arrived at the new house there were these mysterious boxes that when opened had their stuff in them! They’re just like their mom, “yes I hear your crazy directions but I won’t abide by them”. 23yrs later those boxes are still around, plus new ones, but the kids have all left the house! I say our crawlspace is sold with the house “as is” 🤣. Downsizing or decluttering is daunting when dealing with other family members’ belongings, but really, do they need a giant tuff-tote full of electronic cords?

We KNEW we were going full time in our RV, yet we still ended up with a 15 x 20 storage unit for our "stuff." It was our safety net in case we wanted to move back into a house. After two years on the road, we realized not only did we not need anything in the storage unit, but by then we could have bought all new stuff with the money we had spent renting the unit. We condensed down to about 15 plastic tubs that are now at my sister's house. And yes, once you get over the trauma of getting rid of all your things, it is very freeing afterward!
