    Honestly, I think Ed never considered that Stede was in danger because he (in his heart) never expected Stede to choose him in the first place. He's been taught all his life that he doesn't deserve good things so why would Stede (arguably the best thing that's ever happened to him) stay with him? He always expected to be abandoned so when it happened he just rolled with it. It confirmed every hateful thing he's ever thought about himself.

    I think the whole thing is so heartbreaking for Stede too. Like, he was always told that he is not worth anything. That he "defiles beautiful things". HE is the reason Ed got captured. HE is the reason Nigel died. At least in his head.
    He already believed all the things Chauncey accused him of, but when he died LITERALLY seconds after, it was like a cruel confirmation by the universe.
    OF COURSE Stede goes back to his family. At least no one but him would suffer if he went back. At least he would be able to right his wrongs this way. A last attempt at redemption. In Stede's eyes, abandoning Ed and going back to his miserable married life was doing him a FAVOR.
    Of course he doesn't know or realize how loved he is and how much he enhances Ed's and the Crew's life.

    Honestly one of the best tv romances I’ve seen ever. The slow burn to friends to crushes to love. The way their love is purely about how they make each other feel. The unexpected nature of them getting together (since the show wasn’t marketed as a romance) makes it feel so much richer for them finally getting there. Rhys and Taika’s faces just giving off all the emotions. Just honestly makes my heart do flips.

    England was at war with the French at this time, so pirates really were completely forgiven if they agreed to be cannon fodder for the empire. In fact the real Blackbeard got married and settled down...for four months. Until he couldn't stand it anymore and relapsed, taking a ship hostage.

  • @llc358
    @llc358 2 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    I can see why Ed immediately assumed that he'd been abandoned. I think the heart of this whole split between them is both of their own self-hatred. Stede's guilt over losing his family and his belief that he is only able to ruin things made him see Ed embracing the loss of his Blackbeard persona and giving up everything for him as him destroying Ed, keeping Ed from who he was meant to be, so he ran away, similar to how he ran away from his family. Meanwhile Ed believes that he doesn't deserve good things, that he's a monster, that's he's inherently bad an unlovable. I mean look how he acted in the Calico Jack episode. He kept telling Stede "this is me, you were always going to see what I am," and yet he was acting nothing like what we've seen from him all season. He thinks he doesn't deserve to and isn't allowed to grow or change. Izzy hated and rejected him trying to change, and then he fully embraces being Ed, and suddenly Stede leaves him too. He probably thought that either Stede had thought he was a monster and only agreed to run away with him to buy himself time and escape on his own, or he believed that Stede, like Izzy, loved Blackbeard and not Ed.

      You know what Starman, and I would love your perspective on this...
      This show works because they don't ever have to TELL you anything about the characters identities, they just SHOW you.
      It's not about being gay, or straight, or he/she/they/them.
      It's just people being people. And That's fucking it.
      And it's beautiful.

    • @starmanfriday7309
      @starmanfriday7309 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@GlenOwen I definitely agree. A lot of the time shows/movies make a big deal out of having a queer character, only for them to barely act like a queer person. Like, yeah he goes around being quirky and gay or whatever, but he feels much more like a stereotype to fill some kinda quota, than someone I would actually know in the real world.
      With this show, for one, we have many different queer people with their own personalities and goals in life so we’re not just stuck with the same stereotype over and over again, but also all the characters are treated with such care from the actors and the writing team that they actually feel like realistic 3 dimensional people. Lucius especially could have so easily fallen into that same annoying archetype we’ve seen over and over again, but he never does, and that’s a testament to how incredible this show is.
      Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby seriously blow me away with their acting for Ed and Stede. For two straight men, they play those characters so well. It really feels like watching the realistic joy and struggles of finding yourself later in life and falling in love for the first time. And even though they never say it, you can still see the difference between Stede, who was stuck in an unhappy marriage and is finally realizing why it never would have worked, vs Ed who’s much more comfortable in his queerness, but still insecure around love because he feels like he can’t really be loved as himself for other reasons. It’s incredible.

    This was such a damn good episode! Such a clever one too. The ending was heartbreaking but at the same time I appreciate the twist... They didn't do the obvious thing.
    I know a lot of people are super upset with Stede here, but I get where the man is coming from too. He's so emotionally drained and has been feeling such an intense amount of guilty for so long that being told he ruins everyone around him, even Ed (especially Ed, imo) was the last straw.
    And poor Ed was finally coming to terms with being himself and wanted to explore what a life like that would look like with Stede, then it all went to hell. Imo he should've at least looked for Stede before leaving (I'm sure Ed's insecurities about not being enough played a part in this), but at the same time Stede also should've just told Ed he needed to see his family to work through his issues, but he was too traumatized to think of that. The whole thing sucked, but in an understandable way. (Also, it made good television, so. I can't be too mad about it.)
    I know the fanbase adores Izzy but personally I hope he gets thrown overboard attached to a block of cement at some point. No forgiveness from me, at least at this point. I honestly can't imagine him ever being okay with 'Ed', or being okay with Ed and Stede being together and not trying to tear them apart.
    As for the crew... The difference is incredible. They went from wanting to mutiny to standing up for Stede so staunchly.
    Anyway, the acting in this episode was stellar. You'd never guess that Rhys and Taika aren't used to 'serious' acting.

      Personally, the actor is a delight (very genuinely talented) and has been sharing and commenting on a lot of fan works too so I think he's helped his character become more popular as well just by being so nice and enthusiastic. For me that doesn't change what I see on the screen though.

      @@Antony_Oscar I'll take a bit of badass Stede, but tbh that's another thing I don't want them to go all out with. If Stede is a completely competent pirate and a right badass he'd lose so much of his funny charm and feel like a very different character. I'd like to see him continue to slowly improve himself without changing TOO much.
      Con is great, I agree, I just... Have a difficult time ever imagining Izzy (in any scenario) respecting Stede. Maybe the writers could pull it off though!

    I love this series! Glad to see you’re enjoying it, too. I have a hard time picking out character motivations sometimes but on a rewatch I feel like I understand better why Ed left in that scene. Ed is so ready to believe that ‘nice things aren’t for people like us’ because the only person in his life who ever challenged that wasn’t there to prove him wrong. It makes me so sad but the drama is So Good!

    Unfortunately, the Act of Grace still lead to pirate deaths despite pirates giving themselves up. Most were exempted from being saved. Also, 10 years of service basically meant servitude for the rest of their life because life expectancy was much shorter. You were expected to die in line of service. & since Brits & French were in a war, that meant they’d die on frontlines, likely. Also sodomy or identifying as lgbtq+, back then meant jail, which also contributed to the high mutiny rates & more pirates. Piracy was always a popular alternative.
