Calico Jack is the shittiest ex. But his story about Ed burning a ship and Stede's reaction is even funnier considering Stede literally did that three episodes ago.
And Izzy does love Blackbeard, but in a very toxic way. He wants to make him worse while Stede makes him better.
More than making Ed worse, I think Izzy is just in love with "Blackbeard" the persona while Stede is in love with the real Ed
@@miliz5942 To me, it's kind of the same thing. Izzy loves the persona because he thinks that's the only way he can have a relationship with Edward. So he encourages him to be cruel and vicious and sink deeper into that persona. Even if as Blackbeard he's cruel to his subordinates, Izzy wants that because it's some kind of connection and his abuse is better than his disregard. Izzy's whole situation is pretty sad, really.

Izzy is such a personification of masculine toxicity and internalized homophobia...gotta love the subtle arc of that
Izzy is very much in love with the IDEA of Blackbeard. And because he's internalized all of his toxic masculinity and homophobia that Ed is actively trying to break away from, Izzy doesn't allow Ed to be himself, which makes it so Ed always emotionally regresses and closes himself off when he's with him. They bring out the worst in eachother, while Stede and Ed bring out the best in eachother.
i don't know if you saw it, but there's a little part there right at the end of the episode as the camera is zooming out on ed and stede tied up and ed kind of pats stede's leg with his foot and it is so wholesome. like they're literally being captured and tied up and they still only have eyes for each other.
David Jenkins said the foot-touch was an improve by Taika!!! And then Rhys rolled his foot back to respond, it's so wonderful and sweet!

learned this morning that Taika improvised "whip my balls" and Jack's stunt double was just like "well here goes nothin" (he was a trained whip guy, obv obv) Makes Rhys's reaction very fun to watch. I don't remember if they did more than one take on it

This episode is great and Will Arnett does wonderfully, but God I hate Calico Jack too. What a massive douchebag. I don't necessarily buy that he's dead (the whole 'well, we didn't see the body' thing), but if he is I have no issue with that. Anyone who tries to come between Ed and Stede is gonna be on my shit list, lol.
Ed was irritating for most of this episode but tbf this is a thing people sometimes experience, so it was interesting to see it play out. I definitely don't dislike Ed because of it though and was so happy when he came back for Stede and crew. That little moment at the end of the episode where Ed winks at him and touches Stede's foot with his toe was so stupidly sweet. The music during this scene was perfectly synced and so well chosen.
Loved Lucius being such a good friend and even telling Pete to cut it out when he went on about Blackbeard's leadership, lol.
RIP Karl 😔 You were a real one. Poor Olivia.
And Frenchie + Wee John are fun roommates! Hope to see more of them together in the future. (Poor Oluwande, though. Damn sitting nook.)
You know, my sister thinks the same way. Unless we see them actually passed away and died, they aren’t actually dead. It’s a good rule of thumb in movies and TV shows.

Yep. Will Arnett’s stuntman (who actually knew how to use a whip) wasn’t expecting it, so he had to get as close to Taika’s balls as possible without actually hurting him.
That was not an umbrella it was a parasol. It is used to diffuse sunlight to keep people from having heat stroke on summer days, also it's frilly and pretty...
Also bird guy is a druid and he was observing the Moon phases. Druids believe that they get their power from the Moon and their ability to communicate with nature.

Have you seen "Black Sails"? It's the polar opposite of this show in tone, a hard-hitting drama, but still pirates. I ask because it has some of the same historical characters in it but it's funny seeing "Calico" Jack Rackham in this show because he's such a douche while Jack is one of the most beloved characters in "Black Sails". 😄 You might have fun checking it out someday as you get a more beloved Jack, a very stoic Blackbeard and an Israel Hands (Izzy) who's basically the same in both shows.

This one and the previous are my 2 favorite episodes. I love getting to see Ed be a bit of an idiot in this one, with whippies and yardies and coconut wars. Weve been shown his deeper layers and how complex he really is, and then they throw this at us and we learn hes the kind of guy to ask a man holding a whip to whip his balls.
Although the look on Stede's face when Ed leaves with Jack is heatbreaking, I absolutely love Lucius talking to him the next morning. And the fact that he goes to Ed as well- hes such a great friend, I love his and Stedes relationship.
The ending with The Chain is my favorite scene in season 1. Everything was choreographed so perfectly I cant get over it. I also love that they had their breakup and reunion in the same episode. The way they look at each other is so sweet. And the toe touch gets me every time!

I laughed at the beginning like you were listing the crew as the camera panned over them, then it gets to buttons and the tone of your voice was so funny lmao. Yeah Lucius is like the most emotionally competent person on the ship! And black Pete’s reactions are always good. Oh man only two episodes left! Feel like we are zooming through the series. I really like your reactions to all the episodes! And totally understandable about having to cut the end song. It’s a popular one lol. Someone edited that scene to have Gimme Shelter by the Rolling Stones over the ending scene and it works really well too, especially bc the “love…it’s just a kiss away” part lined up perfectly with Stede and Ed looking at each other. Also I laughed at the peeing scene and your reaction! So focussed on that detail you miss jacks implications! That was funny. I’m just so glad you are enjoying the show so far!

Okay, man. I was enjoying these already, but now I've subscribed. Please go back and do full length ones, especially knowing what you know now! This show just gets deeper and richer and more layered AND funnier with every viewing.
It's a huge cultural phenomenon (as I'm sure you know by now) and I fully believe it's still on the upswing. I don't know how David Jenkins even pitched this show, much less made it a masterpiece, but it's sheer magic to see that it did in fact happen.
This show was so well done. For years, I think we’ve needed a show that doesn’t need to tell you what to think, it shows you who these characters are… Regardless of gender or orientation or preference. That’s true representation
