    I like to think about this show as a slash fic of the real story. 50k, hurt-comfort, angst with eventual happy ending.

    Blackbeard: an avid reader
    Bonnet: owns a library
    Jenkins: "guys i have a fucking wild idea."

    One of my favorite way our flag means death is delibaretely historically inaccurate is Mary. She cosnistently dresses like she's at least a century too far ahead, and she paints in styles that haven't been invented yet. Literally showing that she's a woman ahead of her time. It's subtle, but it kinda shows the show's whole attitude to historical accuracy. Useful, but if breaking from it serves their story better they'll do it.

      Astute observation. I didn't talk at all about language, fashion, weapons and so on which is all pretty inaccurate to the times haha. Mostly instead focusing on the events that took place. For example even though it's not stated, clearly Bonnet is reading the crew Pinocchio which was written 150 odd years later. Great show nonetheless :D

      It is great ^^
      They have a lot of those details very conciously chosen breaks from accuracy. Pinoccio, a tale of becoming a real boy is extreamly symbolicly relevant to the story.
      Eds Mad Max costume is no way acurate, but there to tell us something. Stedes safary outfit, the mostly correctly dressed french nobels in blingy modern jewlery . . . . all deliberite choices

      Also, when Stede tells her that he's in love with a man, she totally accepts it. Normally, she should be absolutely horrified.

    One of my favorite random facts learned through researching pirates during my Assassin's Creed Black Flag phase is that Blackbeard is reported to have liked fashion and he stole nice clothing when he raided ships. I'd like to think they connected on that front at least, which makes how OFMD chose to have their first scene together about Stede showing Ed the inside of his closet funnier (and also how they built a whole character arc about Ed not thinking he deserves luxurious things even sadder)
    Furthermore, the show's depiction of Blackbeard as someone who avoids directly killing others is probably accurate to the real Blackbeard's philosophy (especially with how he purposefully made himself scarier to scare others off), and Stede was probably also unlikely to want to kill anyone directly either. They were two (presumably) literate, educated British people on a ship who essentially acted as managers with a lot of overlapping similarities and interests despite the contrasting personas they projected to others, so they had the basis to be at least friends. I feel like you could make an actual argument that Stede was potentially one of the only people who crawled through to the "real" Edward Teach behind the purposeful facade of being a mythological figure named Blackbeard who terrifies others into submission, as the show does.

    I always wondered why Blackbeard kept Bonnet when he could easily get rid of him. I like the idea that he found Bonnet interesting and wanted to keep him around. I'm so glad you're saving the rest of their story for season 2.

    • @JakesPlace
      @JakesPlace  2 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      Yeah it's weird. It could have been sheer fascination with this lunatic Bonnet, a rich wanker who gave away his immense fortune to become a broke ass pirate. Or he could have wanted that juicy rich boy ding dong ya know.

  • @dragontears
    @dragontears 2 ปีที่แล้ว +40

    Taika saying they didn't want to drag it down with too much research was reassuring. I think they'll make everyone happy with a season 2. The historical accuracy people can be happy with actual history and the rest of us can be happy with the show.

    My fan theory: "Lucius" was just a fake name. He's really Daniel Defoe, and we know he will live because he goes on to write that famous pirate book. I'm REALLY upset that Calico Jack made it in, but not Anne and Mary.

    I am really hoping that season 2 of OFMD is gonna be based around the events mentioned in 10:58..... Stede is gonna return to the Revenge, but obviously, Blackbeard is super mad at him so he makes Stede a crewmate while Blackbeard alone captains. and then tension ensues (but they'll eventually work it all out bc they Love each other

    Thank you for not "spoiling" their historical fates. As you say, the show might do something interesting with a spin on what really happened to them. And although I do know the eventual fates of some famous pirates (Anne Bonny, Mary Read, etc.), I'm enjoying that I don't know the full story of either Blackbeard or the real Stede and can pretend the show is real. (ETA, because why not: I'm a descendent of actual Caribbean pirate captains, with a story I really should write. No lie.)

    It was like watching a stage play and not a show that tried to replicate the scene. It felt low budget and cheesy. It had a few moments but lost me after episode 3 or 4. It was based on a interesting character

    • @emsitdown9141
      @emsitdown9141 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      I personally think that's the charm of it. It's very clearly not intending to replicate the scene, not taking itself too seriously. Which means its setting expectations for its strength to be in comedy and drama instead, expectations on which in my opinion it delivered. But to each their own! :)
