    17:00 Destiny's wrong about teachers grading based on potential. I had a lot of teachers do this to me, the lesson I learned is that it doesn't matter how hard you work your rewards are arbitrarily given by an authority. Once in grade 11 my 8 page essay got the same grade as some kid that literally traced his foot on the page and handed it in. I've had motivation issues my entire adult life.

    • @marmite_popsicle
      @marmite_popsicle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I agree fully. but there is a fine line where this can work.
      so in PE this did motivate the fat kids to do something, because they didnt give up quickly. sure, as a good student you definetly had to work harder, but it also meant that the grades were worth more.
      it was a mixture of being judged objectively and how much effort you put in.

    Destiny is dead wrong about how any poor person can move and be financially fine. Yeah they may be able to move and pay rent but couldn’t pay for retirement, student loans, sudden health issues, etc. He just seems out of touch and forgets how life isn’t as simple as “work hard and you will be successful”. Some people can’t get a job that would pay for all those things. Financial security is important

    • @bigmicbeatbox6432
      @bigmicbeatbox6432 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah there is some sort of balance in there between “I am poor but anything is possible and i just have to work hard” and “I was born in a shitty situation and no matter how hard I work nothing will change.” I think destiny is trying to say that if you are in a really shitty situation the only thing you can do is try, and blaming problems on other things doesn’t help you at all, even if those other things really did fuck you over

    The thing about being seriously mentally ill is you can definitely blame your environment. Prior to my psychosis in 2017 i would have thought these people were making excuses as well but I've had it where i can no longer play video games, watching television is a challenge to keep up with the plot, typing is impossible during episodes and i actually was practicing to pass stenography (type more 225 words per minute) but no way i can do that anymore. I can't take my trash out and people look at me able bodied like i am just a lazy piece of shit. I never thought I would be a smoker but i absolutely have to smoke, i don't eat or sleep, ive went from being 300 pounds to now being under 130 and malnourished. Life is complete hell. No one wants to blame their environment.. If you can keep a job i am jealous of you

      I know exactly how you feel. I've been through about 4 years of depression now and before that happened I probably would have thought the same thing. I've been ridiculed in front of all my friends by people who I THOUGHT were my friend just embarassing me deliberately because even though I've explained to them my mental illness, it doesn't register and they just see me as lazy. I've legit had one person be like "and what have you done in the past four years Liam?" And be like "ok well some of us have jobs to go to in the morning?" When I asked why they were going home early. In front of like 10 people he would say things like this all the time.
      It's a tired phrase but it's so true that you CANNOT understand how absolutely crushing and debilitating mental illness can be. It completely crushes your soul and the most able bodied person can be so empty that it's impossible to do the smallest of tasks. I've struggled with such a long time with telling myself that I'm just a lazy piece of shit.
      I fkcing WISHED I could've been that person who could get a job I wanted to be a part of society so badly but when you're in that deep dark pit, nothing can get you out.
      Best of luck with your situation my friend

      Hey, I hope you are doing better my friend. As a determinist I agree with you and I know we are a product of our environment but I also believe in free will. This may come off as overly optimistic to you and you may brush it off or ignore it but I don't care, at least you read it. At the end of the day when you overcome an obstacle it was you who did it. You and no one else.

    I agree with the idea with the B grade because the student could do better but grading student work is not the right place for it.
    Grades and diplomas are supposed to be the result of an evaluation of ones skills and knowledge not a reward for hard work. Grades are supposed to be a reference that can be compared with other grades. If grades are personalised then they can’t be compared and diplomas become meaningless.
    The purpose of a diploma is to be able to show that one has a specific set of skills and knowledge without having to be retested by each potential employer or person wanting to make use of those skills and knowledge.
    Rewarding efforts should be done separately from evaluating ones current skills and knowledge.

      I guess it's something to do with "British/American Cultural Superiority".
      Well, the same way French hate the English words.
      Wikipedia:
      "Some sources suggest that it may derive from the Portuguese word mula (from the Latin mūlus), meaning mule, the hybrid offspring of a horse and a donkey.
      The Real Academia Española traces its origin to mulo in the sense of hybridity; originally used to refer to any mixed race person.

      French do the same.
      Ok, for example Métis has a similar connotation, but it framed as an inoffensive:
      "They have a shared history and culture and are of mixed Indigenous and European (primarily French) ancestry".
      The same they do with some of the biographies on Wikipedia.
      One person will be described as a Nazi Collaborator who moved to Nazi Germany, & another person would be described as moving to Germany in 1933 & running "an innocent" Corporation.
      We all know what it means. Obviously if you run a large corporation in Nazi Germany, you would be working with the Nazi government.

      So Metis & Mulatto is the same.
      It's just Black vs Indigenous mix with Europeans.

I think Peterson just has a problem with the term "gender-affirming therapist," but maybe saying that wouldn't get as many clicks.
      Peterson also assumes that these gender-affirming therapists don't understand that gender is bimodal. There are two genders most people conform to, and some open space for people who don't fit in either category. Peterson points out that open space and uses it to justify him not using the term gender, which comes off uneducated.

For a typical hunter-gatherer it is around 15-20h work week. While in modern societies parents HAVE to uncomfortably punish the children to make them fit in a system were they can go homeless.
