Dr. David Geier Hi Dr. Geier, I have my left sternoclavicular joint that is inflamed. My daughter noticed 3 months ago so I’m not sure how long it’s been there. I had an x Ray, blood work for autoimmune and inflammation and everything came up negative. I’m wondering if you’ve ever seen this and what could be possible causes as I don’t remember injuring it. I do play volleyball but do not know of any injury to it. Thank you.
Mine pops out like this, it has been happening for a few years. How to i strengthen it or help it? I box and do Krav Maga and it is really affecting my fights. How do I stop it from popping out?
Dear dr David Geier, I’m a mma competitor and after dislocating my shoulder I’ve experienced the same as many others. My collar bone keeps popping out when moving my arms above my shoulders. It mostly doesn’t cause any discomfort but after an intensive training session I do feel pain for a few days. Would it be worthwhile to get it checked out?
Doctor what should I do my left color bone is popped out from more than 4 - 5 years I'm worried about it... Just because of that I think my body structure looks different which means (my lift shoulder is up lifted and also popped out from the right hand color bone) don't know what to do does it gona affect my health!!?
Ever since i've been doing basic pushups like 150 a day, i got these dislocations when i raise my arm from 90° to 180° up, it pops out but it doesn't hurt, it just feels weird
I'm under 18 and for the last 5 years my left collarbone has been popping in and out of place when I rotate my shoulder. It used to only happen when I wake up but for the past few days it happens every time I rotate my shoulder forward. This really helped ease my concerns
@@natesmith1572 yo it's been like a month but constant excessive and sports made the joint more normal honestly. Feel like the lack of exercise and movement there caused it. But that's just my case 😅
Its not uncomfortable for me but I hate this clicking sound. Makes me something is seriously wrong with it and it can go south real quick if i pick up some heavy weights
If so much people feel as if it this injury cant be helped isn't this a sign that doctors need to do more research I to this to help create better options for treatment, it's hard to hear a doctor say this isn't going to affect you, when it is in in fact affecting your life a lot.
Left clavicle dislocation since 2001 from a fall playing volleyball. Occasionally get tightness in the shoulder and discomfort in front of clavicle and sciatica. Stretching exercises on TH-cam and yoga makes it better. Occasionally I’ll go to the chiropractor for an adjustment which helps. Mentally keeping my left shoulder relaxed and keeping my posture up helps too. Still, it’s annoyingly uncomfortable at times but livable. Glad to know I’m not alone in this.
I got the same problem i got injured (sprain) in wrestling 3 months ago started doing physical therapy and going to the gym more frequently for a month now but i still get pain from doing pullups. I guess something that might help is doing back exercises with lighter weights then gradually work your way after a month or so and see your pull-up performance if it improved or not. Im in my 3rd week now I’ll update you if i feel any improvements after 2 more weeks
It’s something I started noticing about a year to a year and a half ago. It pops in and out on my right side, mainly when I do push-ups, my shoulders or simply just push my shoulders downward. Because I row, I asked my coach what it was and he doesn’t know what it is, he’s kinda freaked out about it. My parents don’t know what it is, I didn’t know what it is. It hasn’t been too much of an issue but it does interfere when I workout because of the constant popping back and forth
I have bilateral chronic anterior sternoclavicular joint dislocation not caused by trauma. I tried many doctors and ended up at the mayo clinic. In August I had reconstructive surgery on the left sternoclavicular joint and so far I think it was the best decision of my life and plan to have it on the right sternoclavicular joint as soon as possible. My joints dislocate whenever I raise my arms or move my shoulders backwards. It was very painful and I missed being able to do things like washing my hair without my fingers going numb. They say that there is a chance this dislocation will resolve itself over time but I was diagnosed a year ago at 14 and I couldn’t handle dealing with this until my late 20s.... I think that surgery is the best choice for a lot of people, especially if you’re young and it’s starting to greatly affect your life.
Ive had this happen for pretty much as long as i remember. It happens whenever i move my arms back and forth. It just pops in and out. Its not painful and i dont remember an injury causing it

Thanks Dr Geier, I'm an RN , 64 yrs old and I've played guitar since I was 11 . I swim for exercise. I also work on the computer daily so that tends to play havoc with the arthritis I already have in my back and neck. I've been having some bilateral bicep discomfort that just started this summer while swimming. I just figured I was out of shape from not swimming as much during the winter so I kept swimming. Midway thru the summer my collar bone started popping when I was swimming and now when I raise my arm or rotate it and lately when I move my arm at all. Your video helped me identify this as probable sterno-clavicular instablility. I was relieved to know this probably not a big deal as it is not hurting at this time, it's just really annoying. I don't know if my activities are going to make it worse, if I need to rest it for a while, keep doing what I've been doing or if I need to make an appt. with an Ortho doc . Thanks ! Kat
Thank you for inviting people to share these experiences. I would like to share mine and hope you will take the time to read it. Back in 2008 I fell off a ladder while at work from about 6' off the ground. Just to the left of the ladder on ground level was a square opening in the concrete measuring about 5' X 5' and went about 15' down. This was a pump pit that held all the pumps and motors for the building I was working on. Anyway, after falling off the ladder I fell through this opening, which only had a T grid and plastic fencing covering it at the time. I tore through this fencing and at the last minute I caught myself with outstretched arms. My feet were dangling at this point and I was only held up by my hands and distal forearms. I managed to pull myself up but knew immediately I had done some serious damage because of the intense pain I was in. Long story short (too late I guess): 5 surgeries on the right shoulder and a 3rd one coming on the left. I've had multiple SLAP tears, 2 acromioplasties, biceps tenodesis, decrompressions for bone spurs impinging on my rotator cuff. I am experiencing much more relief despite all these surgeries but there is one thing that still concerns me. My SC joint is very unstable. My last PT noticed this along with a slightly displaced scapula which she thinks was caused by my clavicle being violently pulled and my rhomboid being hyper-extended from the fall. This has also caused my right shoulder to roll forward significantly more than my left. I'm currently doing a home workout program to develop more strength in my upper back muscles to help stabilize my scapula. Now getting back to the SC joint (sorry). I've been noticing that my right clavicle shifts anteriorily when i adduct my arm across my body. Sometimes it will even get stuck and I have trouble lifting things out in front of me until it pops back in place. I mentioned all this to all 3 surgeons who have worked on me but they say there is nothing that can be done about it. My PT says once I have gained enough strength and stability for my shoulder blade that it could resolve this SC joint issue. My question then is is this possible? Or is there a risk of the cartilage holding the joint together completely tearing eventually? Your thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.
I'm curious. Did you get a reply? You posted this some time ago and there isn't a reply shown. I've just added a comment in hope that a response will follow. BTW your accident was terrifying. Well done for catching something (like a stunt man) otherwise I think you'd be in a considerable more difficult situation.
@anthonygregorio2208 Hi. I have been experiencing some kind of popping in my right clavicle, not sure tho if it comes from the SC joint or from my clavicle having too much mobility in the joint which is causing it to collide with something else. Anyways, I have noticed that I have scapular dyskinesis on the same side so scapular winging and whenever I try to fixate my scapula the popping doesn’t really occur anymore (if I fixate it in the right way). Has your training helped you in anyway cause it seems like a similar approach? I would enjoy hearing your thoughts on this.
So my experience with this has been pretty weird. One day I was drying myself off with a towel and it just popped out of place but with an uncomfortable cracking or crumbling noise and not a popping one. Immediately went to two doctors who looked at me like I was crazy stating that there is absolutely nothing wrong. A third decided to give me highly potent muscle relaxant which I decided not to take. So I did some testing myself. When I actively try to keep the joint in place while moving my arm the pain is quite more noticeable than leaving it to it’s done devices. This pain shifting to the back of my shoulder / lower shoulder blade while externally rotating my shoulder and lifting it up to the side. This has been around 2 years ago and I only have very mild pain which increases slightly when holding or pushing heavy weights. Pulling has never seemed to be a problem. Due to another injury I’m incapable of training for a while but when I do begin again I will try to stretch and activate my muscles as much as possible outside of the gym and prier to training. I believe that having a big range of motion in the chest, particularly the pecs minor and in the shoulder could have a positive effect on the problem, maybe not solve it but at least could ease the stress on the joint and reduce popping and the long term ramifications of training with this problem.
I’m currently going through the popping and yes it’s annoying but not painful. I’m beginning lift weights and working through the clicking. No pain so now that I’ve watched your clip, I’ll push through it Thanks
@@djsUltraSo same happened to mine , my left SC joint pops in and out of place just as told in the above video but it never pains, This happened when I tried to start lifting with a heavyweight of 5kg . I Was so stupid, bcuz at first we should take light weight and i overloaded myself. It's been a year maybe , but no pain. What's ur injury?
I was an infantryman who wore a plate carrier for 4 years. started to notice my right clavicle would pop when I shrugged my right shoulder. It's never caused me any pain. That was 10 years ago. I'm still a pretty active guy. I climb boulders, I go back packing, I do weight training every other day, and I shoot rifles with that same right shoulder. never had any issues. I even got in a pretty bad car accident 7 years ago where I inverted a steering wheel in my chest. No change in my clavicle. it's just a thing that happens.
I dislocated my shoulder in gymnastics 3 months ago I let it heal for a month but now my collarbone pops in and out it doesn't hurt but it's kinda uncomfortable
I popped my collarbone working on my car and now it popes in and out of place. When it's popped in it hurts and yanks onto my ears . Doctors are tossing me back and forth . What can I do?
@Eduardo2960 Can you tell me the yoir situation, I have the same problem. And I am 18 years old and I afraid that if it does not grow on one side, can you tell if it is a grout plate injury?
Most doctors say it isn’t a huge concern. But my issue is over a sustained period of time wouldn’t this cause stress on the joint worsening the problem?. Why can’t the problem be dealt with now to stabilise the joint.
I've found that on my right arm if I move my shoulder back, my collar bone pops forward and it Dosent do that on my left side, I'm not sure if it's supposed to do that and I did something to my left side or if it isn't supposed to do that.
I recently had a bicycle accident and fell directly onto my left shoulder. My arm hurt badly for two weeks but the doctors couldn’t really find anything. Immediately after the accident I noticed that one of my collar bones was slightly more pushed inwards than the other and a couple weeks later I saw that when I’m moving my arm overheads that my left clavicle pops out and back into place when I put the arm back down. I told that to my doctors and they had me do an MRI, however there are no damages to the ligaments or any other structure, the only found a small glenohumeral effusion and you can see that the left clavicle has subluxed posteriorly. I suppose that due to my general ligament laxity the ligaments did not tear but only stretched. However the joint is still a bit sore to touch (7 weeks after the accident) and after e.g. carrying shopping bags, my shoulder feels sore and I have pain surrounding my scapula. I also noticed that there often is some swelling of the veins of my wrist since the accident. So I guess my question now is, if you think surgery might be necessary or if I have nothing to worry about. Thank you in advance! :)

Cheers for this doc. I've noticed the same issue with the popping for a year or so now with no pain or issues with movement. I've never bothered to look into it until now and this eases my mind a little. It's a weird issue with it happening with both joints for me. Glad to know it's nothing I should really worth with as long as it continues to not limit me in any way.
My collarbone pops in and out. To be honest I barely thought about it. I thought it's normal for that bone to move and since I'm a little skinny it's more visible. I don't remember having a shoulder injury. I played football back in school. I had a knee injury. I went to the gym for years and it didn't cause any pain or discomfort. Lately, I have been curious to see the name of that bone and that's how I realised it is not normal for it to move. My acromion pops out at the top as well. Although my shoulders pop when I do very specific movements.
Ive dislocated my right SCJ about 8 years ago from a trauma. Its been popping in and out ever since (when I move my arm up or forward). It has never bothered me or caused any pain even when I lift at the gym, but it always caused me to worry that I have to get surgery. The video calmed me down a lot.
Yes I’m having a problem now. I was injured from physical abuse. I actually have a chest bone that sticks out from being broken. Mine does pop in and out and it causes shoulder pain from time to time. I’m in pain today. It’s really raining a lot here. I must have arthritis with it. I’m trying to make a doctors appointment right now. As soon as I go to get treatment I will come back and post about the treatment.
I've had problems for several years with left clavicle. I was landed on by a 13 - 14st man who jumped from a competition size trampoline. He landed on the back of my left shoulder. Now I have, as I've recently realised, a posterior sternoclavicular dislocation. From time to time it moves and pops. I struggle lifting my arm and a deformity at the distal end of the clavicle occurs looking similar to how we shrug our shoulders. I can not bring my arm in line with my ear when it's raised and the thoracic muscles tighten and I find the lumbar region compensates by extending. It's uncomfortable at best. At its worst my left arm has spasms, pain, clicking, popping in the shoulder, elbow with more intense pain in the wrist, thumb and back of my hand. Carrying plates, shopping, lifting pans, washing styling my hair are activities that I struggle with on a regular basis. I've had x-ray and MRI scan but nothing showed up as I now learn the correct angle was not used to identify the dislocation. From time to time it self locates to a normal position but 95% of the time it's dislocated. I would appreciate your guidance in strengthening the group of muscles to encourage it to both migrate home and stay in situ. Thank you for sharing your expertise.

So... Basically, I'll be cursed for the rest of my days with this type of instability. Had to quit a job because of it and of course, I'm not planning to return to any sport activity. Doctors kept telling me to do rehab like this and like that, just to get worse and worse each month. Gosh, I love this life...
@@ff-dg5lp Had to quit a job. And I don't feel like going back to any physical activity. Overall good but it's never the same. Every now and then I feel a weird pressure on my throat
My doctor says they can't do anything about it....Ik have a feeling if I did something early about my SC joint anterior problem i could have fixed it. Is it ok to continue to do pullups with my clavicle pointing forward? Yes sometimes I have sharp pain when it pops or something but I want to continue training....I try to make it stronger by doing calisthenics upper/lower split but I don't want to give up on pull ups and other heavy exercises.
Same they told me that....One did gave me surgary tho for it soo it can be fix...well idk cuz is been 40 days since the surgary and i need physical therapy
Dr David Geier I was in a terrible car accident in April (it's now October). My clavicle was broken and dislocated at the sc joint. It never healed, and the joint was full of bone fragments. I was doing PT, and it seemed to be getting better, then it would pop (like someone was punching me). This would render my shoulder and arm in pain for days, and leave bruises on my chest. The last time it "popped", it never went back in. My ortho said I had permanent dislocation, as he manipulated it in, and it would just pop back out. A few weeks ago, I had an open reduction. He removed around 2cm of the bone, and smoothed the joint and edges so they wouldn't rub or poke me. No stabilization was introduced. The ortho said it should scar over and essentially function as normal. However, it is now floating, and will forever have a strange feeling. This I can live with I suppose. I am 3 weeks post surgery, and ortho has said I can go with out a sling at home, no lifting pushing or pulling. And I am NOT to raise my arm above my head. I am having terrible pains through my shoulder blade, shoulder, and down to my elbow. These ease a bit with rest. Does this seem normal? My Dr says it'll take 8 weeks to heal, and I should just keep icing it and using ibuprofen. Apparently this is a very rare injury, and I was the first surgery of my type at the hospital! I am to do pendulum swings only. And have an order for PT, to do these exercises. What are your thoughts? I'd be happy to email photos of my xrays, if you'd like to see my Frankenstein clavicle 😂 I have already made xray techs say "oh my gosh... " Its truly a miraculous injury!
As Someone going into the Air force For ECT im sure this is due to lack of workouts and bad posture also cracking the sternum can trigger this i only know this from experience YOUR friendly E-1
This happens to my 16 year old son. Our chiro isn’t concerned. He is definitely loose jointed and I even have trouble getting pressure points on him. We haven’t found a solution yet but I am going to recommend he works on strengthening his upper body.
My left collarbone was broken when I was born. I've had SC joint instability all my life. It's been getting less painful but more loose over the years.
My 13yr old daughter is a competitive swimmer. Her primary strokes are fly and free. She’s hypermobile (from me!) and with an increased pool training programme has started to get shoulder pain. With my physio hat on (rather than my mum hat) I had a closer look and she has bilat anterior subluxation of her scj (left worse than right) I’ve got her doing posterior ghj capsular stretches and scapular stabilising exs (PNF and rotator cuff, particularly subscapularis) with great effect. She’s learnt to control the subluxing by being more conscious of her scapular stability when swimming - a few minutes spent in warm up with her Theraband is enough to “switch” these muscles on and she’s back to being pain free with minimal clunking.
Thank you for your insight. Mine subluxates in the posterior direction, so I need to figure out the opposite exercises. But yours seem pretty spot on for someone who suffers from anterior subluxation.
I’m fairly certain I got mine from an accident that occurred during a fall off of pull-up bars(it’s the farthest back I can remember having any issues), and while it’s generally not hindering my performance, it can get somewhat uncomfortable. I do not know if it is this specific event or if it even came about because of the accident or if it’s a genetic thing, but man… It definitely takes away from having the ability to use my right arm for an extended period of time, to the point that I find myself heavily favoring my left as opposed to my right.

@@Maxon408It's better not worse. Been climbing a lot, so might have something to do with that. This sort of injury can happen to any joint in the body, and as long as you keep on traning, your body will adapt and strengthen up that part. Had an ankle sprain, my ankle joint on the right side made a clicking noice and moved a tiny bit when flexed to the side, now everything is good after some traning. Just keep on training, go to a physiotherapist and get help from people who know what they are talking about. Eating healthy also helps a lot!
I found about this phenomena by accident really ... My younger daughter (14yrs) is having the same sensation as described (popping in and out ... e.g. when she makes circular movement with arm). She thought that it is normal so didn't report it. I pretty much understood everything you said about it and it did ease my mind but two questions ... Is it going to be worse since she has some more growing to do or maybe it can grow 'normal' as she goes out of puberty? Other one is that she is doing some rowing (not competing yet) and I'm not sure if that can make situation worse or even make some injury even though she is saying that it never happens during the training - hand are never above head? Thank you.
I've had SC joint instability all my life. It's been getting looser in my adult life but I've never had any pain or problems besides losing some momentum when throwing objects sometimes.
@@justhitreset858 did you find some muscle imabalance in your posture dude? maybe some rounded, droppy shoulders, tight chest? or maybe weak posterior delt?
I'm 15, and I noticed my collarbone keeps popping when I raise my shoulders. It was really unexpected for me and quite uncomfortable as I never felt it before, so now I keep my arm locked and barely move it as I'm quite worried, even if it isn't a serious problem.
I'm also 15 and have had the exact same experience with my left collar bone, I mentioned it to one of my parents who is in the medical field but was told it was nothing to worry about. But, please let me know if you get any more information about it.
Well ... good luck to the person that wrote in. I first noticed my left collar bone popping out when I was in maybe 8? or 9th grade. I didn't play sports, I'd not hurt myself, it's not even my dominant arm ... but there it was! I was told the same, it's nothing to worry about. Some 18-ish years later, it still does it. I rarely even think about it, it's just a funny body quirk. It's interesting to think about sometimes though.
My collar bone end pops outward, very little when I move my shoulder backwards. No pain. It is like that for 15 yrs or more. I do pushups and no problem. Just I don't want it to get elevated.
I developed a popping out of my collar none around Christmas of 2019, with no apparent reason or cause, such as a fall or accident, although I DID hit a street sign with my vehicle in early October, but don't recall any aches or pains afterwards. But in observing my came length I use because of my bad right knee, a friend of mine made a comment about it being too short, which instantly triggered a thought in my head that perhaps THAT caused my collarbone to start popping outwards, as the stress that leaning on my came DOES add a bit of discomfort to my collarbone and my theory being that, if nothing else, this improper came length (too short) could possibly cause my popped collarbone to constantly be agitated, thereby never being in a position to heal properly? I am 60 years old, but have a lifetime of exercising, including weight lifting, bodybuilding, karate and judo training , the latter 2 forms of exercising done earlier in life in teens and 20's...so I've pretty much been in touch with my body's muscular structure, aches, pains etc my whole life. Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated! :-)
@Eduardo2960 Can you tell me the yoir situation, I have the same problem. And I am 18 years old and I afraid that if it does not grow on one side, can you tell if it is a grout plate injury?
I didn't go to the doctor to find out what it is because it doesn't give me discomfort. It pops in the same way that shoulders, knees, elbows pop... but yes, it comes out of place a little when I pull my hand back or raise it(also rotating)
If it's a grown plate injury hm... I don't know but I've never had pain, inflammation or redness in that area. I have grown since I noticed this but I have no problems...
I have some imbalances in my body, but I think they are more due to the fact that I have a dominant right hand...my right hand is smaller (it was actually) than the left one...I have this instability on my right collarbone)...In my case, I think the imbalances were due to the fact that I did more exercises with the bar at the beginning...I was skinny and my right hand was stronger and I think the left one took the lead and grow more on the same volume...For some time I have been doing more unilateral exercises and lifting more with 2 repetitions per set with the right hand and actually hand even out at least in size(it looks a little different because I have different inserts and did some exercises incorrectly)
I say don't panic as long as it doesn't hurt. Try not to put too much pressure on your shoulder joints...If I put more weight I feel something when I do presses or raises.Use a comfortable weight and do more repetitions rather than putting on too much weight.
Can you tell me the yoir situation, I have the same problem. And I am 18 years old and I afraid that if it does not grow on one side, can you tell if it is a grout plate injury?
I've had an unstable joint in both shoulders for as long as I can remember. There's no pain but I do wonder if it has adverse effects on other parts of the shoulder due to abnormal movement patterns.
I have this and thats why im here rn watching this.. when i move my arm it always pops and it feels very uncomfortable.. my right side doesnt do that at all…
Had this since I was a child, I cannot put any muscle on my arms and chest because of it, I also have something in my elbow that pops up and down when i lift. This is so depressing.
@@mortuaest3547same here bro,my all joints make noises, and doctor says me its hypermobility and it cant be cure 😭,am unable to do workout because of this problem and gaining lot of weight bcos of that
Mine pops out when i'm doing certain movements while laying down on the right side, it doesn't hurt at the SC joint but at the AC joint for some reason (it doesn't seem completely stable there either but it doesn't really "pop out"). the problem is that whether it's related to that or not, my right shoulder always feel like it's "weak", like i cannot do fast movements, and when i did exercises for the rotator cuffs i had sharp pain and i had to stop abruptly, it used to be for the push ups as well but always the right shoulder (i would push after a certain number of reps, sharp pain and i would crumble on the right side without possibility to "fight the pain" because the body would react by itself). I'm not going to lie, this shoulder really bothers me but no doctor ever says anything. I have good mobility, but it's always annoying me...

This sounds like what has happened to me. About a month ago, I did not have a tramic injury, but apparently reached the wrong way. It way a forceful and quick action but there was immediate pain. X-rays showed nothing dislocated or broken when I went to the urgent care. But initially I couldn't move my arm without pain. After a few days in a sling, I had full motion and no pain. But since then when I have moved certain ways reaching, it feels like it "pops" out. It hurts in the moment but I move my arm around somemm more and it "pops" back in and no more pain. This has happened about 4 times now. It does not seem to be a strength issue as I tentatively tried my kettle bell routine without problems. I was glad to find your article and video as I was wondering if this were something I needed to return to the doctor about but it seems extreme measures are unnecessary. Will thus get any better....stop the popping out..over time and with care?
I actually have this, thank you. While watching this I was popping it in and out of place and I tried pushing on it with my hand, I could pop it manually but after only a couple of times it actually started hurting. My collarbone pops when I do the motion to do a pushup or by jerking my arm to my left and stopping quickly. Or just in general moving in that direction. I freak everyone I know out by making them touch my collarbone and popping it. They get grossed out by it lol.

In your opinion, do you think physical therapy, or possibly prolotherapy would work better to help correct the problem?
I just found out five days ago that mine is grinding underneath my skin. I'm a 47 year old woman and I have now I have popping scapula syndrome. I just got that 2-4 months ago and in January or February 2022! And my rhomboid muscle hurts like crazy. I do work out at the gym 4 to 5 days a week and I changed some classes around to now where I'm lifting more weights over my head. I seem to think this is just poor posture because my rhomboid muscle hurts so bad I have sat at this computer before I had a standing desk and my scapula didn't pop in the collarbone didn't grind! So Saturday 4/24 I'm going to an ER .... sadly on Tuesday the other day I went to an urgent care and the doctor did not listen to me and I told him my shoulder blade hurt and he thought I met my shoulder and he wasted insurance money and wasted my time taking pictures of my shoulder when I told him it was my shoulder blade
I have weak ligaments in my ankles and I've recently been diagnosed with snapping hip syndrome in both my hips. But tonight I've had this problem, it keeps popping in and out really easily and it's getting really annoying.
Has anybody found a solution to this? Or is it just an annoyance I have to live with? If I hold mine down while I move my shoulder around it feels normal so maybe if I keep it taped for a while that ligament may tighten back up?
Greetings. In my case, 17 yr old, very active, double jointed in many places, whenever I lift my arm up and rotate it in a circle, the "pop" occurs as it goes in and out each time. No pain, no immediate need to stop doing it. I have been working out steadily every day for around a 1-2 months. I haven't really gained notice of it since this week, however it hasn't interfered with my working out. I still plan to get it checked out soon rather than later, but this video eased my mind. Thank you.
I am 66 and just realized that my collar bone is out of the sternum joint! It must have been this way for years and I did not notice. I have had many accidents and injuries but never noticed my collar bone sticking out till now. I have been trying to get it to go back into the socket but it just pops back out because the socket appears to have a worn path. It actually hurt a little to put it back in and there are popping sensations moving my shoulder while holding it in. I am crippled lol. I swing pick axe removing plants, digging ditches, dance throwing my arms all around every week and it does not hurt at all. I am fit. Wakeboarding, Motorcycle, construction accidents over the years either caused an injury or it happened over time. I am worried now. I can't afford surgery and really don't trust being anywhere near a hospital these days. I have been looking for a brace but the chances of the regrowing enough ligaments to keep it in are probably next to 0. What do you think?

Understood. Just thought he would be interested in an unusual case. I don't have any signs of disease. The Ligaments just seem to be stretched or damaged and even though it bulges out, it does not cause me any physical limitations at this time. Maybe it will get worse and cripple me? I am getting a brace and modifying it to hold pressure on the clavicle to see if over time the ligaments can tighten up. Thanks for writing me back! @@DrDavidGeier
Ever since I was a kid I could pop my shoulder in and out with no pain and get my fingers under my knee caps. I could also pop by collar bone. The older I get I can't do those things anymore but I still get the need to pop them when they start to hurt. My shoulders sometimes make a grinding sound. I recently have been diagnosed with degenerative spine disease. I have a ton of lower back pain that limits my movements.
I have this issue while performing lat pull downs or pull ups. It does pop out of place. I’ll usually have to pop it back into place. It is painful from time to time and is sometime triggered by sleeping on my shoulder as well.
Dr. do i have to keep the arm still to the bone to heal? I broke my left clavicule 4 weeks ago and i've been using the figure of 8 since. Now i think the bones are on the right position and have no much pain but i still feel them moving. Do i have to really have to keep my arm immobile so the bones can fuse or they will fuse anyway?

Hi Dr, I have an issue with my collar bone popping out. The joint is soar also i get soreness at the AC joint as well. Or were the collarbone connects to the shoulder. I noticed that i have tightness in my neck and trap muscles. Do you have any suggestions on how to remedy this? Thanks in advance for our advice. Gino
I too have the same issue and experience pain throughout my right shoulder, down my arm, and numbness in my fingers. Have you received any advice on what to do?
Thank you for your video I've already had surgery in my shoulder still pops what can I do I don't haven't told the doctor yet ...🤔 I'm new here to doctors right now I'm having my staples pulled out getting ready to tell the doctor.😶
I have a question! Dr. David, you say it is not a problem if no pain are related, but when you work out with sternoclavicular dislocation, doesn't it mean unbalance and can eventually leads to unbalance muscle building? This is my logical theory. Can you confirm or tell me why it is not a problem if you work out unbalanced?
I have had this issue on both my right and left SC joint for 6 mos. with no sign of it getting better. I was told by my Ortho that it is subluxating and unless it impairs my movement tremendously or hurts tremendously leave it alone. He also told me the only doctors that will operate on it to repair the instability are "Trauma" surgeons or Otho's that specialize in it. I still workout but I avoid shoulder abduction at 45 degrees. That is the motion that makes it pop out of place. It also pops out during everyday movements like taking a shirt on and off and reaching for something on a shelf in front of me. Totally annoying but I have had to adjust the way I do these types of movements.
I've had this bad for over 3 years now (since 13) and it took me almost 2 years to have doctors stop saying I'm making it up or they don't know what it is. I've had to stop swimming and hockey from discomfort and pain as one pops in and the other out. I've been having physio at a specialist hospital for a year now but if anything my pains increased. I've just accepted this is something I'll have to live with.
The same case with me, the popping is way more violent, especially after doing dips and such. I recommend you not to panic and force your joint to pop because too much friction there may lead to inflammation.
I have the same problem, I've noticed this for more than a year and I'm 17 years old now... for example when I want to do "double biceps" and I pull my hands back a little the collarbone stands out a little...It doesn't affect me during exercises except the fact that it pops sometimes and it's annoying... For example when I do db shrugs it pops, when I do push-ups, shoulder press, bench press and most exercises that involve the shoulders... I don't think it's anything serious, it doesn't hurt (at least for me), sometimes I feel like it dislocates and just pops
@@EduIsCooking idk mahn i can't even do push ups rn .when it pops in or out I feel mild pressure . See In 2020 I used to do like 50 push ups but in wrong form and I think that caused it. The poping in or out is visible for me not that much pain but the friction causes pressure somehow
Tbh it's been the most uncomfortable non painful awkward mental situation.... I try to handle it as best I can with RB training creating that internal resistance and contraction with slow controlled motion Strength both horizontal shoulder addiction and abduction (reverse & pec flies) monitoring this through training... hope this helps.... I'm still hoping for more answers to Reversing this.... maybe I need tho Strengthen another attachment and do shrugs hmmmm.... Definitely saving this video to see if someone comes up with one

for me, it was weakness in my front delt. It started to cause pain in my neck along with the popping of my collar bone. I strengthened and stretched the front delt and the pain is gone along with the collar bone instability

Thanks doc. This video addresses my exact problem. Unstable SC that pops, protrudes, with some grinding w/ certain motions. PT helps b/c it's hard to massage it into place myself. Just worried that the instability will hurt something else in my shoulder if I push it. Will update you on month 2 of PT. Cheers!
@Eduardo2960 Can you tell me the yoir situation, I have the same problem. And I am 18 years old and I afraid that if it does not grow on one side, can you tell if it is a grout plate injury?
I noticed at a young age that i can pop both of my collar bones in and out. I just move my shoulder forward a little bit and use my fingers to get in behind each one and move it in and out. It doesn't hurt. I was concerned a few years ago that when i lifted weights, that they may pop out. I took my concerns to my doctor, and he was amazed when i showed him. He told me that he had only read about this condition as it was really rare, and hadn't ever saw it in his entire career. I just figured since i'm double jointed in all my fingers, i must be double jointed in my collar bones. I use it when people are showing that neat thing that they do. If wiggling my ears doesn't compete with their ability, i pull out the collar bones. :)

Thank you.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Caroline!

Thanks Dr Geier,
I'm an RN , 64 yrs old and I've played guitar since I was 11 .
Thanks ! Kat
Mine pops forward whenever i move my shoulders backwards. Move my arms upwards, or do large movements like a kayaking motion
What about now?😊
Thank you for inviting people to share these experiences.
How do I fix this every time I raise my hands it pops out and in
Same
Pops out when I activate Anterior or mid delt/ when I raise my arm overhead such as shoulder press or lateral raises
Mine pops very loudly and worsens when I hold a heavy object

@paulc5058 how is it now??

Dr David Geier
I was in a terrible car accident in April (it's now October).

I’m sure that’s hard for you. Good luck with it!
My 13yr old daughter is a competitive swimmer. Her primary strokes are fly and free. She’s hypermobile (from me!) and with an increased pool training programme has started to get shoulder pain. With my physio hat on (rather than my mum hat) I had a closer look and she has bilat anterior subluxation of her scj (left worse than right)
I’ve got her doing posterior ghj capsular stretches and scapular stabilising exs (PNF and rotator cuff, particularly subscapularis) with great effect.
Have you noticed it causing you to workout chest unevenly when doing calisthenics? Mine isn’t letting me have proper form anymore
Everytime i do excersizes with weights above my head my collarbone pops out

This sort of injury can happen to any joint in the body, and as long as you keep on traning, your body will adapt and strengthen up that part.
Had an ankle sprain, my ankle joint on the right side made a clicking noice and moved a tiny bit when flexed to the side, now everything is good after some traning.
Just keep on training, go to a physiotherapist and get help from people who know what they are talking about.

Has anyone known anyone with an stable collarbone popping at the front? that didn't opted for surgery and still healed the popping?
Well ... good luck to the person that wrote in.
When I do face pulls at the gym my collar bones click forward and back and it's really irritating
Aswell I have pretty tight joints but it's just the collar bone I think it might have something to do with sleeping.
Yeah you could be right
I developed a popping out of my collar none around Christmas of 2019, with no apparent reason or cause, such as a fall or accident, although I DID hit a street sign with my vehicle in early October, but don't recall any aches or pains afterwards. :-)

I wrote another comment but I don't know where it is 💀
I didn't go to the doctor to find out what it is because it doesn't give me discomfort.
Try not to put too much pressure on your shoulder joints...If I put more weight I feel something when I do presses or raises.Use a comfortable weight and do more repetitions rather than putting on too much weight.
i really wanna go back to the GYM but when ever i try to do push ups i hear some popping and i get so scared...sa :'(

Hypermobility?

I have a dislocated shoulder for 3 years but it's don't affect my ability,,,,but I still scared abt and I need some advise

I just figured since i'm double jointed in all my fingers, i must be double jointed in my collar bones. I use it when people are showing that neat thing that they do. If wiggling my ears doesn't compete with their ability, i pull out the collar bones. :)
can you post a video :)
