I always love how Seth makes you think with a smile on your face, and this talk is no exception. However, I'm disappointed this has not been properly captioned to be more accessible. A failure? Not necessarily, but as Seth would suggest, we can "polish the edges."

Art = Making = Risky (uncertainty, willing to fail, repeat processes/again and again)
= Innovative = Challenging = New/Different/Interesting = Having something to say = People Connecting to People doing work that matters = Making a Difference

Good talk, great speaker. I agree with most of what he said. I do take issue with his criticism of "kits". Sometimes--especially with complex fields like electronics or aerodynamics--it's smart to follow instructions and get something working first, THEN tinker and play. I love to experiment but I also respect predecessors who worked hard so I don't have to "reinvent the wheel" every time. Still, what a great thinker! Gotta check out his other work.

This is fantastic. It helps one to take more responsibilities for one's self, and to become more creative, and not just copy other's work. This a skill that I will admit has been challenging for me.

I have always been suspicious with our learning systems. In fact i have always wondered if it is learning at all... Thank you for validating my thought line and for giving me a practical solution for my little ones. There's going to be a big part that i have to play in shaping how they will think and attack the world of opportunities. I have to make sure they consistently fail into greatness :-) not successfully memorize to pass that law / doctors / engineering / (cool job stereo-type ) degree.

On other hands, a lot of (of some) people/students are actually very creative, innovative, and entrepreneurial. They just need better and continuous access to funding and support. Internet does play a big role in promoting creativities and innovations among other things. I always tell my kids to create new things or improve existing things/products. Trying and experimenting (or failing) should be promoted and teach in schools as long as we learn.
Be creative, bold, and have fun doing it!!

The 'kit' argument bothered me a little bit too - kits are often the gateway drug to being a maker (I mean that in the most positive possible sense). That said, I think he makes a very valid point, in that kits often 'lock' you into a 'right' way of doing things, and establish a mindset that discourages innovation. There is a right way and a wrong way to make a kit - that was his real point, the difference between the chemistry kit and the electronics kit.

Agree. They learn that doing things isn't so hard... what's wrong with that?

I think I'm a winner. 10,000 failures is where you start to be able to see new ways to innovate. Surely I've experienced far more failures than that.

I hope this doesn't sound too weird, but the next time you see Seth can you please tell him that there's an 18 year old boy in Brooklyn that would love to meet him. Thank you so much!

@@tom100ify he said recently that he does a lot of local workshops / speeches for cheap because he doesn't have to accomodate for all the travelling and as far as I know he lives in the New York area. So I think a better bet than asking namo713 is to seek out events where he attends.

The artist in the corner... was that a thing in 2012? Very annoying and distracting... Glad it didn't persist.
