      Great observation; and I have figured out as to why.
      Rory, usually when presenting and speaking, "Speaks with his hands"; and is usually speaking to another person. This video here which is often called "a talking head" video doesn't have another person he is talking too; it is a camera.
      So here Rory Sutherland is having to talk to a camera without the need to gesticulate with his hands; and so he hasn't quite found out what to do with his hands, and I presume needs to stick and pin them down whilst talking.
      As we can see, it doesn't look very natural to Rory to speak without the use of his hands.

    i already reverse my marketing. A week before i am thinking of buying something i do some random searches for the item in particular. Within hours the various algorithms detect and adjust their advertising, sending me some cool ideas/deals or alternatives. This then helps me narrow my search and expand my ideas for when I am actually looking. i basically manipulate the algorithm to give me what I want.

    this is so mind blowing for me. It's at least for me, high concept truth, explained. giving me insight into my own vulnerabilities and helping me understand how or why I found the value I did. I'm not a cheap person but I find it hard to spend money without regretting it, and it has played a negative role in my life, but his explanation of value through context and perception really helps me see why I feel the way I feel. I'll buy a group of friends some drinks or buy a brand new skateboard and give it to a homeless kid, or just pick up the tap or show up with Pizza at a friends place and I never regret buying those things but when I need some new shoes it is like pulling teeth to get me to buy myself some and once I do I get sever buyers remorse, I finally understand somewhat what is going on in my head here. Not completely as I think I'll have to watch this multiple times to fully get it but it's a insightful explanation of my own insanity. Thank you Rory for real dude.

    I love this guy, every time I stumble upon a video I learn something, even after working in this industry for close to 10 years. However...
    The mental gymnastics marketing people do to reposition advertising as something that contributes to society is baffling. Just accept that you're doing something not valuable to human wellbeing. It's objectively bad for us to be surrounded by ads everywhere we go, be it digitally or IRL. We just don't need all this shit we buy, jesus christ. Look around you, around the room you are right now, and tell me with a clean conscience that everything there is necessary. Marketing makes the world a worse place than it can be. I don't understand why can't these guys just accept that fact and make peace with it (blame it on the bigger system or whatever else). Even when knowing that, you can still allow yourself to enjoy the intricacies of marketing as an art or science.

    • @ac1646
      @ac1646 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It isn't all about 'necessary' (here in the West at least). It's also about comfort, convenience, personal taste and discernment. Doing what you have suggested, I've noticed a lot of what I have is not 'strictly' necessary but are a modern convenience. Sofas are a modern invention but they have moved into the role of 'necessary' because our modern brains would see them as such. I have cushions too and I have purposefully not bought 'disposable-fashion' ones but then again I know there is a market for my taste in more high-end. There is a tipping point for me when the price tag outweighs any increase in actual quality and moves into the realm of 'brand for brand's sake.'
      As you are someone who works in the industry then your brain is able to reverse engineer the advertising around. I worked for many years as a graphic designer and can easily do that.
      You come across as conflicted and worry that you've sold your soul to the devil! See it as a gift and help others 'read' the advertising around them. 😉😉

      @@DuckPerc The two go together hand in hand. Rory is talking about the physiology of marketing. He couldn't be more plain in his language. 🤷🤷

    • @stormdance056
      @stormdance056 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This is true if you are familiar with marketing in the context of “the thing that bombards you with ads for nonsense you don’t need and don’t think you want”. It becomes more valuable when you recontextualise it into “how to make a large group of people do something” and/or “how to connect people with products and services they need”. This includes, but is not limited to:
      * running a vaccination campaign
      * encouraging literacy in underdeveloped areas
      * understanding and solving discontentment with government services
      * getting people into understaffed jobs
      Etc.
      His classic example of the train from London to Paris notes that for a tiny fraction of the actual tax money that was spent on the improvement, they could have added wifi on the train and had almost equivalent satisfaction and productivity increases. That’s marketing. Marketing =/= advertising.

    • @EveryoneWhoUsesThisTV
      @EveryoneWhoUsesThisTV หลายเดือนก่อน

      Interesting...
      I watched the video because I haven't seen Ads for years and I wanted to know where marketing was at now....
      I've glanced at billboards and such, but since I stopped watching free-to-air TV I don't see ads anymore, I used to half-watch them on mute, so I knew when they ended.
      I was expecting this video to be on post-modern marketing methods with viral videos and such, but the actual content was far more interesting.
      I think his last point about Ai replacing Ads is already here. :)
      If I have a use case for an object I can't build myself, I go looking for it on google, which is already enhanced with rudimentary Ai.
      A lot of successful companies don't advertise but have paid for a high listing in google search results.
      I think it will be interesting to see how marketing tactics change to cope with dropping Ad penetration.

    Interest in a solution comes from having a specific task / obstacle in your way. Value can be seen as a measure of usefulness of a solution for a specific task. A Product is one possible solution to complete a task. Production cost is the minimum price. The product price should be more than production cost and also represent the products value. Competition is there to ensure price is low and quality is high.

I remember a couple of years ago when I was working at a well known national supermarket in the UK and all the pricing team were getting highly amused as they were going around showing us how they were putting the prices of stuff up and then adding a 'price matched to Aldi' sticker to it. @@DonMaseven Incorrect. TH-cam does not recommend solely based on channel history. Obviously other reasons but a fresh channel can hit 100k-1M views. Perhaps the title could have been marketed better, no pun intended.

    Absolutely right, ME/CFS has been poorly marketed unlike many other less severe illnesses.
    Therefore this horrible illness that has one of the highest quality of life burdens has been under funded and under researched to the extent of there still being no understanding or treatment even though the illness has been known for 50 years.
    Even now with long COVID and still nothing is being done to help patients.
    Marketing and therefore people's perceptions are paramount and fundamental

    i couldn’t agree more with the comments on value here (is Rory ever wrong?!). it’s the one thing that time and again, people seem to misunderstand. I wonder why we seemingly default to an idea that everything has a fixed empirical value?

    Ive got a question. I know a few people who say advertising doesnt affect them whatsoever. While i believe its true they wont buy anything just because theyve seen an advertisement, surely it cant have zero effect?

    • @paulthomas8262
      @paulthomas8262 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Few people see and advert an immediately go an buy something, or consume something is some way. It is volume thing, and sometime the company just need to remind people they exist. Most people find ad annoying much of the time, or are indifferent to them on the surface, but that doesn't mean they don't have an effect.
      Often companies are selling an idea rather than concept and this that idea that get tied to the brand.

    How is the foil cap on the cans pointless? Surely it gives the consumer a reasonable confidence that where they're about to put their mouth hasn't got any harmful bacteria/chemicals/dust on.
