Guthrie, I've been playing nearly 45 years from a kid. I havent really had any lessons so mostly played just by the the sound without knowing any theory. I thought I'd gone as far as my knowledge would allow. When I heard you playing the first time I became completely remotivated to learn more and now your style of teaching is so practical & meaningful that a light has come on and Im playing again-difference is I now know why I was playing what I was and the fretboard hascompletely opened up for me. Thanks. You're a star and one of my all time favourite guitarists.
I’ve watched a million guitar lesson videos over the last 10 years. What your teaching is exactly what I’ve been wanting to learn. I like that this is your focus in teaching us. Watching you play is mesmerizing! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Brilliant! Clarity, what a great lesson. Thanks for that. It’s great how you’re clarifying the fretboard for all us old guys who’ve been playing by ear for many years, even those of us who know and like ‘theory.’ Keep up the great work, GT…just love your playing.

I enjoy playing in a be-bop stabs because they are so leading. I have no theory, being a couch guitarist but I’ve found these as they inform you, or lead you to resolving the prior chord or note. Two note stabs seem to peal back the underlying structure and they are always close at hand making them easy to find and expose the fretboard patterns. My first time on your channel as you are mentioned or referenced plenty so I thought I’d give you a listen. Great tone and great explanation. Thank you!

To this day I haven't seen anybody explain this topic so well and on point with lots of tips on how and what to practice to get this down. Thanks again!

Man I just wanted to say this series of learning to solo over chord changes literally sounded like a foreign language on the first couple you posted. I’ve been watching and rewatching all of what you’ve posted and each one keeps getting easier to understand. I appreciate so much how you really and truly want to give others the opportunity to learn this instrument and to actually take it to the next level. Although I haven’t comprehended too much of what you’re putting out, these are easily some of the most informative videos on TH-cam. Thanks man. Look forward to the next video.
Another great lesson and big eye opener for the b7 to maj 3rd pull on the ear....you can close your eyes and listen and hear the changes easily! So cool! Your lessons are very helpful and super clear to understand. please keep this up! Hey it would be great to go over some simple licks and phrasing to help "connect" the shapes together so they sound more like lead licks and not just 1s, 3s, and 5s....like that exercise you showed of playing the 1, 3 and 5 is awesome (Ive tried it and it works amazing!) but I mean more how you connect it all together to sound like lead licks and not just arpeggios of chords.
Like lots of others have already said - many, many thanks Guthrie for taking the trouble to break down and explain some fundamental aspects of your approach to playing (out of this world sometimes like that intense jam 4-5 years with Brent Mason and the guys on bass and drums - Wow!). I've seen quite a few of your earlier vids, which while very good, were not nearly so 'user friendly' (even with the TH-cam slow down function). This one and the one you posted a week or so earlier have been really excellent. It doesn't get much better than this. Cheers.
GREAT information! I've been playing guitar for going on three decades, and I've never seen that explained so clearly. You've made me want to practice 👍
Excellent! Great example. It helps to see what can be done with it. Gives me a lot to work on. I am soloing with chord shapes more than by scales these days. Thanks for that!
Another helpful video ...please keep these coming. Along the exact same lines of anticipating the III of the upcoming change, I like to notice the root down a half step to Nat 7 connects a I to V turnaround, and the fifth to sixth melody carries a I to IV chord change. In all those cases, it’s really great the way you point out the ways to look around, then, for the neighboring chord shapes, or fragments of those shapes, to orient on the other side of each change. (hope that’s not rambling and confusing)

@@guthrietrappmusic Hi.. Keep up with these lessons if you can..you have almost 5000 views after only a day or so up.. Thats impressive on its own... This lesson is subtle but killer.. I mean one just drops a semitone from the flat 7th to the 3rd in the 4 chord yet it makes a massive difference as it so effortlessly leads the listeners ear.. Ive never even considered this and have been playing for 30years but now am very conscious of this and Its already making a massive difference to how I approach soloing Perhaps One day in a Guthrie Trapp YT masterclass ;o) Id love you to explain your musical ideas here. th-cam.com/video/2njlqzIKhgI/w-d-xo.html also kennys solo is incredible.. both super fluid and relaxed but theres a ton of tension and release there. and it swings like hell.. Best regards
Great lesson. They finally got my info straightened out and I got signed up at ArtistWorks. I just saw a video of Norman:s Rare Guitars and the Scottish dude was playing a National Tricone and You, Brett PapaStach , and Tim Pierce were in the background just a few hours ago. Your feet must be as fast as your fingers, Nike needs to sponsor you. You are one busy Dude. Thanks.
Another great lesson Guthrie, thank you. I'm striving to see the fretboard in the way that you do, and I am making progress. I don't have the decades to get to your level of playing, but I do, hopefully have enough years to be able to play at the best level I'm capable of, and that's all I can ask.
This has been one of the most effective guitar lessons I've had on youtube or in person. Thank you so much for this amazing content. Please keep up the great work!
Hey man, great stuff that you are showing, coming to you through Mr. Papa and you are perfectly adding up for the more intermediate players! Thanks for your effort and always looking forward for more new stuff from east Nashville. cheers from Germany
I keep coming back to this lesson because I love how it is bringing the resolutions down to a simple one note change to keep an ear out for. At 9:33 you say you're in the "D position" of the A chord, but technically you are in the C position, are you not? In the CAGED system, a couple of the positions overlap very closely and every note is in two different chord shapes. I like to simplify the CAGED system to just ACE. Then only the tonics overlap and occur in two different chord shapes, otherwise any note belongs exclusively to either the A, C, or E pattern. By and large that includes all chord AND scale tones from any of the 3 positions. The D position and G position are still seen to exist, just as slightly less important combo positions drawing from two shapes (D position draws from E and C and G position draws from A and E). Just a little monkey wrench to throw your way! Always love your lessons and when I hear your playing I'm like, "Is he really just making all these sounds out of these simple chord shapes? OK, I'll go back and start there!"
This is a great lesson! Thanks Guthrie! For those who haven't checked out Guthrie's curriculum at ArtistWorks.com, get yourself signed up! He's got a ton of pre-recorded lesson videos and a video exchange platform which is also awesome. It has already made a huge difference in my playing after just a few months. I used to approach improvising by starting with a 7-note scale and then I'd try to pick out the important notes, which ends up being a lot to process if the chords are moving quickly. Instead, Guthrie's curriculum is all about focusing on chord tones and then the rest of the scale follows when you need it. It's a little shift in thought, but the payoff has been big!
That is amazing! - I would love to see you explain how to use chromatic walks up or down in a lead. What when how and why. But hey, maybe you already have and I missed it.
Great video love all of the video you're doing. It's so very helpful. A tip from a video guy - turn the auto exposure off and set to a lower ISO. It's a little too hot.
This is the first time I've actually understood the concept of what notes to "choose" in a solo...
It's always been randomly through scales...

Love the way you explain things Guthrie! I’ve been trying to solo following the changes for years and a few of your videos just made it click and I’m so happy with the music I’m making now!
Thank you for doing what you do sir!
So happy to help man!! Glad it’s working!! Keep it up!!
Guthrie You are the greatest. For those of us struggling to be melodic and trying to know where to go next and why , what better lesson?
peter hamilton Thanks a ton man!!
Hey Guthrie Trapp youve been my idol since the first time i saw your video, i'm just beginner i dont even know how to playing scale well , but your videos always motivates me to practice everyday, i really love melodies and everything you played, i hope one day i could feel what you feel when you playing guitar, thankyou so damn much!
Gairah xperiment Thank you so much man!! Means a lot.

Mark Pritchard thank you!!
Another great lesson. Learning a lot from these lessons you are doing. Its exactly what I want to learn.
Steve great man!! Happy to help.
Thanks! Really helps get away from just thinking about scales only!😁
tony elkins Thanks! Yes it will open up the fretboard. Just stick with it!!
This is great Guthrie love it 😀 more please
newhallskins thanks!!
I hope you never lose that, explaining the intervals. I'm trying to teach myself jazz, and the targets and intervals are everything. Too many instructors on here just say a fret number and never explain why, useless. Awesome job!
dartagnan moore Thanks a bunch man!! That’s it!! You got it.
Yep, it really is like the difference between giving a man a fish and teaching him how to catch his own fish!
Amazing teacher! You just blew my mind and fretboard wide open to limitless possibilities. Thank you Guthrie.
Man, Guthrie. These are so great. Thank you for putting in the work! Really, really appreciate it. Nothing like learning from a master while sitting in my home.
Robin Sarac thanks a ton man!! More to come.
Hiya dude, loving your playing, found you with TP and looked you up, your a very real explainer with the way you teach, thanks for being a relatable guy.... CHEERS from Australia
Thanks a bunch man!!
Thanks Guthrie, this is helpful info.
Dr Gonzo great! Thanks man!
Thanks Guthrie this is exactly what i asked for a few weeks back . Bullseye...
i think many will get a ton of mileage from this information.. Its this smooth linking up and resolution of ideas/ scales/licks that really elevates ones playing and lead work.. cheers
Simp Simpson awesome!! I will keep ramping up. It’s kind of a big picture thing. The fundamentals are key but some people might not see how it’s all connected right away. Then the light bulb comes on!!
Ive never even considered this and have been playing for 30years but now am very conscious of this and Its already making a massive difference to how I approach soloing
Perhaps One day in a Guthrie Trapp YT masterclass ;o) Id love you to explain your musical ideas here.
th-cam.com/video/2njlqzIKhgI/w-d-xo.html
also kennys solo is incredible.. both super fluid and relaxed but theres a ton of tension and release there. and it swings like hell..
Thanks.
VonBluesman ha!! That was a fun day. Thanks man!!
This is so good Guthrie. I've been following you since your video on delta blues on brett papas. Thank you so much and hello from Ireland.
Clare Jiu Jitsu Academy, Martial Arts & Fitness my favorite country! Thanks a bunch man!! I’ve been to Dublin, Cork, Kinsale, Longford and Cavan!
Another great lesson Guthrie, thank you. I'm striving to see the fretboard in the way that you do, and I am making progress. I don't have the decades to get to your level of playing, but I do, hopefully have enough years to be able to play at the best level I'm capable of, and that's all I can ask.
Escape the Matrix thanks man!! That’s all we can ever ask for!
This has been one of the most effective guitar lessons I've had on youtube or in person. Thank you so much for this amazing content. Please keep up the great work!
Gee, that guitar is gorgeous, Guthrie!
Darren Lucas thanks !
Hey man, great stuff that you are showing, coming to you through Mr. Papa and you are perfectly adding up for the more intermediate players! Thanks for your effort and always looking forward for more new stuff from east Nashville. cheers from Germany
down the line thanks a bunch man!! Brett has really helped light a fire under my butt!!
Great teaching and awesome playing, thanks so much for sharing. Best to you man
JazzTele thanks a bunch man!
Excellent lesson.. Just what I've been looking for... Thank you so much !
Tony Ledbetter Thanks man!!
Great lesson! Thanks for sharing. You Rock!
Dave Massie Thanks man!!
EPPIC RIFFING ONCE AGAIN BROTHER, CHEERS HEAPS!!!
Fandao19 thanks!!
Another fantastic video. Thank you for posting these wonderful lessons.
MrGitpicker thanks man!!
Eli Pointer thanks a ton Eli! Means a lot man!! Glad it’s working for you.
Thanks Guthrie!
You are so awesome. Great lesson.
John Sousa thanks man!!
Thank you. Another great lesson!
Thanks man!!
Great lesson!
Alan Fitzgerald thanks !!
That is amazing! - I would love to see you explain how to use chromatic walks up or down in a lead. What when how and why. But hey, maybe you already have and I missed it.
isaiah30v8 Thanks man!! I’ll try to cover some of that soon.
Fantastic! Explained so well. Thank you!
Thanks man!!
Hey Guthrie. I'm new to your channel and I like it. Hope it keeps going. Thank-you
Great video love all of the video you're doing. It's so very helpful. A tip from a video guy - turn the auto exposure off and set to a lower ISO. It's a little too hot.
Hey Guthrie,
Awesome!!
Thanks!!
Thanks man!!
Good on ya, Guthrie!
