Anyone else just play this intro over and over again like I do? So much emotion, I'm striving to put that emotion in my improvising. Thanks GT, if nothing else for at least giving me a goal to strive for
When I see virtuous guitarists on the internet they cause me frustration and depression. But with you guys it's totally different, I prefer this Gutrie over any other. Thanks Brett for your channel
Lovely there is literally no end to music theory. Tones and progressions are amazing!! flowing smoothly with continuous melodic theory/patterns doors keep opening to possibilities with your videos . Thank you both!
Back in 2001 I saw Guthrie with singer Nick something (when they were Filthy Rich) do a set at this hole in the wall in Fairhope AL (Mama Ruex's) and his playing blew my friggin mind, and I remember wondering how one gets to play that good. I had only been playing a few years at that point. And now 17+ years later he's on the internet teaching us his magic. Awesome. So glad I stumbled upon this.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you! Pure Gold! Only a few minutes in, and I've already stopped and rewound the video multiple times to try to absorb all the gems being shared here. Thanks to you both for sharing this!!!
This lesson is killer. I think talking and playing during a lesson is just fine! This is what finally got the whole CAGED/modes thinking straight in my head.
Absolutely, Music is a combination of mathematical sequences and frequencies that a specific combination sparks our brains individually...its euphoric mind blowing
7:33 - Can be treated as a backdoor dominant, a iv min6 or a ii m7b5 (D7, Am6 or F#m7b5). A melodic minor sounds great over that chord, and of course the F#m7b5 arpeggio sounds killer over the Am as well.
Damn that first lick lay down, this dude is sick. This is a fantastic window into an amazing guitar mind, very educational if you are intermediate - advanced with guitar. I gotta say this video is really awesome, it can take some work but I've got tired of just trying to solo over the root chord or the relative minor and always had trouble jumping from chord to cord while improvising a solo. This is very helpful for that.
Bending in and out of major/minor 3rds + bending in and out of major/minor 7ths is awesome. Sounds so bad if you don't do it right, but when it is done right..good work.
Guthrie helped me understand things like this: World = Key you're playing in Neighborhood = Chord Progression House = Style of Chord Progression (Blues, Jazz, Funk, etc...) Foundation of the House = Full Chord Shapes Frame Work = Chord Triads (1,3,5) Walls = Arpeggiating the chord Decoration = Scale / Mode depending on the style of music
This clip is just too funny. He's almost knocking Papastache out of his chair with his playing. Hard get more sweet and melodic than that and he makes it look super simple too ;) Great stuff!
Wow! This is awesome. Brett, I love the way you present these amazing guitar players. Normally I would listen to the likes of Guthrie Trapp and just give up on trying to play the guitar. But this just made me pick up my guitar 'cause there is so much I can learn from this. In fact I'm taking the morning off work 'cause I just cannot put the guitar down until my fingers are too sore. I can't thank you enough, gentlemen.
So worth the watch, as expected. Very inspiring. I’ll never forget the time Papa Took the time to comment on one of my videos many years ago. He’s an amazing and humble player. Loving this channel!
Many thanks, PS! I really want to start posting vids again soon. My most recent stuff has been playing with the Lexington Lab Band live and in studio on occasion. Great people and musicians. If you have a chance check out their Boston episode here on TH-cam. 5 songs in total and I’m playing the Ebony Les Paul Standard and Whale Blue PRS Singlecut. They cover everything from Steely Adan to Johnny Cash. Had a blast!
great combo! Guthrie, the mad genius! and i have to say Papa is, unbeknown to him is like a real melody wiz, off the top of the dome...Which is unteachable either u got it or not!
Right around 20:30 I was like hey that sounds very Cuban..... sure enough Guthrie ends up mentioning it. That minor to dominant sound with harmonic minor is so good.
Great job getting Guthrie! I absolutely love the guy's playing. I think I've watched every video of him that's available. He often talks about not knowing extensive theory, and that gives me hope. Hey Guthrie, come hangout at my place in Ky. for about 2 months and I'll pay your way the entire time. *lol*
Great lesson, already watched it entirely twice! Killer player, awesome tips, love the way he plays sixth all the time, it's so melodic hope you could make a video with him talking about it :) Keep doing what you do, your guitar channel is one of the best in my humble opinion ;)
This lesson came right on time. You’ve been hitting right in the wheelhouse of what I’m trying to work on lately and the way you and Guthrie broke this down opened the flood gates of tonal tasty goodness! Definitely looking forward to more lessons with both you guys. Thanks a ton Brett!
Now, how awesome would it be to see Trapp and Price get together and bounce guitar playing techniques off of each other! I can only imagine. Thanks Papa! This was great!
What a great lesson, from a really nice guy (Guthrie), who, like Brett, has the ability to actually explain and show what he is doing so that those of us who pick things up very slowly, can actually understand. Brett many, many thanks for this (and your other videos, too). Probably one of the most enjoyable guitar videos I have ever seen, and I am delighted to hear that you and Guthrie will be doing another couple of videos.
papastache102 I saw him play with Trigger Hippie....he filled in and it was their last show...More of a rock style than what you’d expect from him.....made me a fan....thanks again
Can we play the major scale of each chord of the same scale ? For example in a G major song with G C Am as chord : can we play the C major scale when the song is playing a C chord and A minor scale when playing over the Am ?
While I agree with this statement, there are metal players out there that can shred AND still have great phrasing. Admittedly, they are few and far between but when I think of metal players with amazing phrasing, the first guy that comes to mind is Alex Skolnik. There are few people on TH-cam that I love to watch and listen to play guitar, one is Tim Pierce and the other is Guthrie Trapp -- so fluid and everything seems effortless.
Fantastic playing and explanation. I want to get good at this technique. You really have to think to play over chords like that. The challenge makes it fun. I think that's why we all like guitar. The challenge! Guthrie is a great guest to have at the 102!
It's not Eb diminished. That is a misspelling of the chord when we're talking about the key of E major. If the target chord (e.g. E major or E minor) root note is E, the chord at 7:32 is D# diminished. D# diminished resolves most often to a chord built on E. The D# diminished triad also requires no accidentals because we already have D# and F# in the E major key signature. This is a convenient way to know if your spelling is correct, i.e. just follow the key signature. Eb and D# are enharmonic but are not equivalent and cannot be used interchangeably when you spell chords/harmonies. If this were acceptable, we could spell a B major triad with Cb, Eb, and Gb. Of course, that spells a Cb major chord, not a B major chord. This is VERY helpful to get right if you want to write down what you learn, organize it, and be able to communicate with other musicians who actually know music theory.
Great, but not too soon; this will keep us busy for a while, and presumably you will follow it up with a related lesson, like you did with Ford's video. (Please?)

The chord or arp at 7:32 is a Ebdim .
Wish I could play like that though.
Start on Eb then minor 3rd's up to F# then resolve to E chord .
It's not Eb diminished. That is a misspelling of the chord when we're talking about the key of E major. If the target chord (e.g. E major or E minor) root note is E, the chord at 7:32 is D# diminished. D# diminished resolves most often to a chord built on E. This is VERY helpful to get right if you want to write down what you learn, organize it, and be able to communicate with other musicians who actually know music theory.
