I find your tutorials a lot easier to follow than other's, I'd like to see more for some of the basic stuff (Attack animations, making attacks into combos based on timed button presses, weapon pickups/switching, etc)
I love the sheer complexity this sorta has. It's definitely something I wanna master and learn more about, instead of giving up on the first couple tries. That in itself gives me a sense of endless fun that I'll have in this art platform lol.
These tutorials are really honest to god the best tutorials I've ever seen, about anything, ever. To the point, clear, ordered and most importantly enthusiastic. You deserve more subs, pronto.
As a person who went to the Art Institute for game art and design, it blows me away how much all of the functions in Dreams translates to maya and many other 3d animation programs granted on a smaller level but this "game" is going to breed some fantastic animators and so much more...personally it makes me exited the more people with these kind of tools the better.
I've been animating for a while and have been doing walk and run cycles the long way all this time! I've been manually mirroring the second half. Your trick for mirroring the second set of keyframes helps so much!!
I didn't even realize I've been fighting the default procedural systems all this time. I built a whole logic bypass system to turn the default keyframes' influence to 0 while I had jump flips going. Thanks for making this video! Will be a whole lot easier making rigs from now on.
This was an amazing tutorial and I am so glad you made it. This was a huge help and I feel like I understand animation better as a whole for it. I hope you continue to make videos on other topics, you will always be my go-to if you've covered a topic.
I love your videos. You're the whole reason I started making custom puppets and animations. It seemed daunting until I watched your videos. You're clear and to the point. I'm still learning new things from you. Thank you for making these, and please never stop :)
I want to make a game inspired by my favorite book series, so watching these videos is what I need until I get my hands on the game and get home from my study trip..!
Just picked up dreams yesterday. I was a big LBP creative mode player but all of this is complicated. I know it's gonna take at least a month before I'm able to get anything tangible down.
There is so much information missing online about a lot of what you cover here! I would love to hear more about Inverse Kinematics and how they work in the puppet, de-animating, and more workflow tips for custom puppets. Fantastic work!
Awesome stuff as always man! I'd love to see some combat animation/combo building animations from this channel. Very few creators seemed to be getting that right in Early Access. Not easy I know.
I've had this game for 4 months now, and I still hardly understand how to make anything, despite constantly watching the tutorials and masterclass videos...
Thanks bro. I love your tutorials. Pls keep up the good work. Hope to see more in the future since the game is officially released now 😁👍 we dreamers need good tutorials 👍
in my city, there haven`t Dreams in the shops because the mercancy are slow, but the tutorials I feel things for go at the capital of my country and buy this fantastic and perfect game.
I love you tutorials mate I always learn something new from them. I really have to practice that copy kf mirroring technique as that saves so much time. Keep up the good work.
Nice tutorial ! It would be amazing to low the music from the video when your work with the sound effects or audio so we can hear how it renders. Thx for your work :)
Beautiful video. I've been using After Effects for a year or so and learned to do beautiful animations with the puppet tool. It's less or more the same concept shown here, with the difference that in AE when you use the puppet tool it will blend and stretch the illustration also, whil this doesn't happen in Dreams (unless you don't select the stretch tool). Anyway, hard part in Dreams seems sculpting a decent character!
Insert Chef--"THAT DOESN'T MAKE ANY GOT DAMN SENSE!!!!" That is a very nice run animation. I think just like learning guitar, I am done trying to make video game shit. 😂😂😂 I was following pretty well until the end. How the Hell would anyone have simply figured out how to do all this?????!!!!!!!
Not really clear on how you combined the two Key frames. 4:03 If I delete the second key frame, only one half of the puppet animates. How did you combine them?
To combine the animations, I placed the 2 keyframes one above the other and lined them up, I did this so that when editing one keyframe it will show me the other keyframe at the same time. From here I can edit one of the keyframes, and because they are lined up I can see both poses while editing just one keyframe, but only one side of the limbs has the effect showing that it has been animated. I carefully grab the limbs on the side that doesn't show the effect of being animated but is still in the pose of the alternate keyframe, and the reason I grab them carefully is because I want to keep them in the pose they are currently in. So essentially I use the second keyframe as a reference to where I need to place the unanimated limbs, then once I have a single keyframe with both sides of limbs animated I can delete the other keyframe :)
@@MrWooshieMan, I'm trash at this so far, lol. Just creating a run animation is tripping me up. Can't imagine getting everything else I want made. But as far as the run goes I believe I see now. I'll try it out when I get home. Thanks 👍
I'm hoping to get this for my birthday and thought I would get an idea on it before I do. Your videos seem very good, I was just wondering what control scheme you find easiest to use?
Fantastic work, have really been enjoying your vids. Have to say though...you sound a lot like LucidStew. It's uncanny. Just a meaningless observation, thanks for the hard work.
Can somone please help me, im doing the tutorial right and when im dond with the animation and it looks decent when i scroll with L1 and dpad. But whenni check it like he does in the video it is diferent. Not the animation itself but when i chet the keyframes the positions are different than what i set them to be, and when i try to adjust them back to the position i wanted them i cant. Because i move womething slightly and when i let go it moves so i try to adjust it again and it repeats on and on and i cant do anything, pleaase help anyone
Man, I don't know how you move things exactly where you want it. Whenever I try to move a limb or something, it moves to some crazy position, and takes too many positionings to get it to the right spot.
@@lukewilliamson5865 Found out you have to tweak in your puppet and deactivate all of the default puppet animations inside the behaviour options (procedural animations, walking and jumping). And there you go, it should move normally.
@@lukewilliamson5865 Note: It's important aswell to tweak in on the limbs and make all of them non-collidable so they won't move like crazy when you play the animation.
Thanks for the tutorial! I got a bit stuck while playing back my animation in play mode- it wasn’t as intended, and the legs seemed glued to the floor and glitchy. After hours I figured out that the idle pose was interfering somehow, for anyone having that issue. Still not sure what to do about it. I deleted it but then I don’t have an idle pose. I’m a bit of a noob.
Hey, when you're duplicating the one side, around 3:15, how are you using the mirror tool? It looks like you're just clicking the right hand side, and the left side is snapping in place. But I don't know what you're actually doing, I tried to imitate it, but it won't duplicate the pose.
Aaron Wells, to snap one side of the body to match the other side all you do is turn on puppet mirror tool and then grab (just tap) the side you want it to match, it will snap in place
Is there a way to blend custom run and walk (etc) animations the way the procedural animations do to avoid the slightly jarring "switch" that happens between cycles?
So how would I go about splitting the left stick into forward, back, left and right to play custom animations respectively? Maybe I missed an important bit of info just really struggling to figure this one out
I have followed this steps and its really helpful but i have made my animation but when i go into test it sort of does the animation but with minimal effort. Feet hardly lift off the floor and a stiff upper body with barely moving arms. I have procedural animation off and still no change. Would really appreciate if you or anyone can help with this, its driving me crazy lol
I watched this tutorial and version 1 of the tutorial. Both are fast, and everything I could want in a tutorial. You’re awesome! Now, would you happen to know how to make it so that the player can only run if they are holding down another button? In all of the attempts I’ve made, nothing seems to work.
Hi Mr.Wooshie, your videos have helped me immensely. I have one question for the walk into running animations. When I try to run, it looks like my puppet is attempting to do it's custom walk cycle as well. I turned off procedural walk but he still does it. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Please and thank you
When i put the mirror the limbs for the last 4 keyframes, one of the legs doesnt actually deanimate and the animation doesnt mirror, how can i fix this?
I'm assuming you've already got an answer, but just in case: 1. Copy the first key frame. 2. Edit the copied key frame (L1 + X on the key frame). 3. Turn on puppet mirror 4. De-animate one side of the puppet (all the parts with the hashmarks) 5. Click R2 on each opposite part of the puppet to mirror their positions. 6. De-animate the side you just R2'd. Now do that same process for the other side and match up the 2 new key frames on the timeline.
I'm so clueless! My custom movement animations hinder and glitch the movement itself. Character has problems with running and turning at the same time, and with always stopping immediately when I release the button, but when I turn off the 'run animation' timeline the problem disappears. The thing is I'm trying to make a character which is controlled with the D-pad :D The character is rotating correctly, but the movement direction updates in a random manner when the animation is on, so that it looks like the character is sliding on an ice.

For first person, MM has a FPS Puppet to use as a base. For a character to chase you, the simplest way would be to tweak that Puppet and set it to follow the player, or to place a follower gadget within the Puppet's microchip :)
