Ah, cool... I discovered this also, while working on a project for someone. I did it slightly differently though which is a tad cheaper. Instead of a ton of flecks, I used 2 flecks--one for the start one for the end. Works exactly the same but only has 2 iterations going at once. Then I turned on duplicates :D
Cool thing about duplicates is, you can easily make the flecks appear along a line if you want to--eg. the ege of the sword. ;p
Right now, the jet trail is going all the time, which isn't ideal. I would turn off the paint, and turn it on with the keyframe--has the same effect as animating opacity, but while the trail isn't shown it's not powered so it'll use no processing power.

I was wondering how this was done, I feel like a sword trail effect makes attack animations look so much better.

I would have never thought of that. Really easy to implement and the result looks great!
Thanks a bunch for the video :D

2 blank keyframes? What a waste. Why not use the blend of the one keyframe? Other than that cool trick, didn't know that yet. Thanks

I've been trying similar methods to get the effect of a lightsaber swing but never was able to achieve it. Do you have any ideas?

Do exactly what i do in this tutorial, but use one of the longer flecks and scale it up to be the length of the lightsaber

If you need any sort of trail at all, you can use this!
