  • Sometimes, by ignoring people, we do ourselves a great favor. Moreover, I’d say that ignoring people from time to time is necessary to keep our sanity in a world that constantly tries to grasp our attention.

Me too. I used to think I was lonely. But I’m actually not. I have great thoughtful conversations with myself. I get all my jokes, I know my triggers, I don’t have to ask me to be quiet. My husband is the same. Outsiders find it weird that we live together and have days we don’t talk outside of the necessities. Dinner, dog walks, making sure the silence is choice and not a breakdown.
The best advice I got was from an eating disorder book was to give yourself 10 minutes of quiet rest a day. I can’t do quiet so I play a soft white noise. It’s insane how refreshing 10 min alone in a calm space can change you.

In my household, when we are wrong, we promptly admit it and make amends. It took a little while for everyone to learn. But, silence beats yelling and screaming.
The way it plays out, they will get over the anger and apologize. Then we all sit down and discuss the behavior and set boundaries for future situations.
By the way, this goes for me too. When I am wrong, I promptly admit it and make amends to my children. This models accountability and gives them the chance to practice forgiveness.
I try to reward good conduct with attention and significance and toxic behavior with indifference and boundary enforcement. It takes time, but it is better in the end.
I’d like to say I thought of all this. But, it comes from AA. I am a recovering alcoholic with four years of sobriety. The principles work in all of my affairs.

Society's insistence on seeking external validation can indeed be a heavy burden to bear. But realizing that true validation comes from within, from the depths of one's own spirit and connection to nature, is a journey of self-discovery worth undertaking.

Unbelievable coincidence. This week I had a discussion with my wife, she came home yelling at me when I was meditating, initially, I ignored her to finish my mindfulness session properly, but 5-10 minutes later, I fell into her yelling trap and was dragged to discussion with the consequent upset. After things cooled down I reflected and decided to ignore her yelling (trigger) from now on. I already don't pay attention to social media, and what other people say/think but when is about someone I care such as my mother or my wife I find it way more difficult to ignore. I know that won't be an easy task but willing to meet the challenge. This video came just in time with useful tips. Nice work, keep it up. 2 thumbs up from Colombia.

Boy, do I resonate. After 30+ years of dealing with p§¥¢hoti¢, relentlessly toxic, emotionally volatile relationships... I think I've tried WELL more than enough. 🙂 I've been an exemplary, kind, compassionate, emotionally-attuned soul all my life. But I've grown utterly exhausted of how humanity has treated me. It's embarrassing how much white noise, static, and negative non-sequiturs I've had to endure. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. 💪😎✌️

@JME0676 I can relate to your point. I don't agree necessarily with ignoring your wife but instead sit down together & set boundaries. She should definitely respect your peace & be more conscious/mindful of your meditation times. Explain how her actions make you feel when she does that. If she is an awakened woman who is aware she will & should comply with your boundaries to wait & approach you after she has calmed down & you are finished meditating to tell you how she feels or what has occurred to upset her. But ignoring the ones we love & who are important to us I don't believe is right. That could trigger ppl with past traumas of being ignored. That is not a solution. Ignoring toxic or negative & disruptive ppl or family members yes! Absolutely ignore them if it's not good for your mental health but our close meangful relationships & those ppl should be tended to with compassion, kindness & empathy. In otherwords discern who should truly be ignored because not everyone should be imo.

Excellent. I just subbed. I say, you just don't even need people anymore. It's the 21st Century. We've given up on ideas of owning a house and having a family before we are 30 but still cling to outdated ideas about socialization. In today's day and age, there is no need for people other than for transactional relationships. Loneliness is a social construct. Be happy alone.

You're a bafoon. We do lol. We absolutely need people. Even if youre not interacting with them, you need them around in proximity. Ive tested this over many years. We are evolved to be social creatures. Evolved. Do you know what that means. Yes I'm going to patronize you. We're tribal/communal. Not everythings about practical function. Technically, we could handle all our business alone. Some find relative peace of mind as a monk. But there IS a price, and it will come with tremendous mental cost. We're not designed for it.
After trying to go it alone against my nature for many, many years, its caused all kinds of problems. I was hikikomori. Total rejection of society for about a decade, so I know what happens. It exaggerates neuroticism, increases tendencies of self-absorption and inconsideration of others, leads to a more predictable and monotous reality, it enables too much comfort and not enough resistence (which makes you less resillient over time), etc, etc, etc. Also people are like the sun to a solar battery. You gain energy from them. Sometimes even when they anger me, it gives me a sort of energy to channel I wouldnt have gotten in isolation. And I'm saying all this as someone much further on the introversion spectrum.

These lessons to me feel like a part of growing up. Only through realizing that you have to ignore some people do you truly grow towards becoming who you are. BUT it's a virtue, a middle between two extremes, sometimes you have to listen, to hear others. In this regard, this quote of Nietzsche is such a gem: "In loneliness, the lonely one eats himself; in a crowd, the many eat him."

Hate when ppl take it personally when I don’t want to talk to them. Not everyone is a people person and that’s okay, go find someone else to talk to. I like being in my mind and thoughts especially while working. I struggle with this at my workplace. Despite the whole department acknowledging a large portion of us are introverted and like to focus without constantly being spoken to, they still force themselves onto you. I could have both earbuds in (this is allowed in my workplace I work in IT and data analytics) and this one lady (she’s nice and all but this is annoying) would literally stand at my desk til I take them out and acknowledge her. And no they are not looking to talk about work related issues or projects, they’re looking to tell me a story about their kids or something. And while I’m not rude and I respond because I speak when spoken to, it’s annoying how I’m constantly expected to compromise my comfort to cater to someone else’s concept of a comfort workplace. Especially since I’m not given the privilege to work from home to protect my mental state while she gets to work from home every other week and then complains she has no one to talk to. Idk if anyone else in the world feels this way but I sure as heck do.

I have been selectively ignoring people since high school and I really do get flak for it, but I am proud to say that my inner peace is relatively more intact compared to others who are more connected and open. I'm an INFJ and I truly live up to the introvert aspect of it. I cannot stress enough how much ignoring people (selectively of course) has made my life better. Unfortunately though, my current work requires me to be more connected online, and I do feel that decline in my inner peace, but I am holding the line. I will say that whenever I go outdoors, especially on bike rides and hikes, I become thankful whenever we go to a place that has no phone signal reception as it means my friends will not be glued to their phones when we take a break. Nowadays, I truly feel that preserving your inner peace has become a rare commodity that is more valuable than any precious metal or luxury item, and yet, people still love to throw away their time and energy to attention that doesn't do them good. Thanks for the video, I needed this.

It's important to have discernment. If it's someone who's abusive or just means you harm or chaos, or is a vampire, yes, ignoring can be paramount for your mental health. But ignoring others can also be abusive, and can disconnect us from our own humanity, and the humanity of others. Community is real. People have always relied on each other for physical and emotional needs. Just because a lot of that has moved to the internet doesn't mean those needs have changed. If everyone ignores each other we're all in a world of hurt. Sociopathy is not the answer.

Doing whatever I want. Chasing my solo mission. But it's that contentment in me to go out and be happy. Than I can just hand out a little happiness around town. Not expecting anything back. And bam you suddenly have friends all over.. and yet you still choose to be alone half the time.
