Honestly my main pet peeve, and its mostly white, cishet booktubers, promoting books solely based on representation. Representation is absolutely important and good representation at that. But calling a book you didn't enjoy good because it had a trans character is ridiculous.

Right? For me, books I've rated 3 stars are usually "This is a book I enjoyed and it was nice" and "I didn't feel strongly about this book but I don't regret reading it." This means I still liked/loved the book, even if it didn't amaze or deeply moved me.

Mutual negative reviews give me validation, and I love looking at negative reviews on goodreads before reading a book I’m skeptical about bc it usually tells me if I should take the plunge or forget it completely.
And reading a book you hate for views, only really gets sticky if you’re not upfront about it. Like don’t tell me you thought you would like because we both know that is not the case.

Regarding pricing for shorter vs longer titles: I think the pricing is consistent-ish for longer and shorter books within the same genres because if authors were payed for length of novel, there would probably be a lot of unnecessary overwriting and filler in the books? I feel like if the story is amazing at 100 pages, we shouldn't push the author to add another 200 just to earn the same as their colleague that has a different, more overstated writing style.
I'm sure there are other reasons, but that's just my take on that. (Not that I wouldn't like cheaper books 😅)

I think my two biggest book pet peeves are:
-the scalpers of popular books/editions. For example, I saw one woman who bought a bunch (nearly 100) of remainder copies of one of Sarah J Mass’s books from book outlet and then was selling them for $50. Like you bought all of those for probably $5 so no one could get them at that price and then sold them for so much because that cover was discontinued. Another example would be the people who buy the special editions from fairy loot, illumicrate, etc. with the goal of selling them for profit. I see people selling book sets that cost $75 for $300 and it just seems like a giant scam
-How sometimes content creators decide to redo videos without new content to add. I see different people make videos for specific genres or specific tropes etc. and then remake the video a year or so later but don’t have any new (or only like one more) recommendations to add. Like one person I follow made an intro to science-fiction video for people new to the genre and then the very next year she made a new video but all of the books and recommendations were the same except for one more book was added. I get that it’s hard to come up with new ideas and new content when you’re limited by the books you are reading, but if someone has been following you for any amount of time then they’ve already seen that, and you could just link to that original video in your monthly wrapup or something.

I work at a library, and I can't tell you how many times I've had to look up the series order of books because it wasn't on the spine and a patron wanted to make sure they checked out the right one first. I obviously don't mind helping them out, but it would be way easier / faster for everyone if it was on the book somewhere.

On deckled (sp?) edges, I once had a customer bring up a book with them thinking it was damaged, haha. It took me a while to get used to them once I discovered them, but now I kinda like them. But to each their own, always.
ALSO! My largest pet peeve as a bookseller, especially recently, is the resizing of mass markets, or the “pocket” sized books. They don’t fit in any fixture! It makes them look so messy! 😤

Also this: Title of the 📖 is All the Romantic Ways He Loved Her. Blurb on the back of the book very clearly describes a Romance. Queue to Review: 1 🌟 This book was a Romance. What?! How is it the book's fault that you're too stupid to realize that a Romance book is going to contain a Romance? 🤦‍♀️ Also people who review a book before it comes out, and I don't mean they received an ARC. I'm talking about people with " hurt feelings" or whatever because an author had to change the date the book comes out so all of a sudden they get a 1 🌟 waterfall because of it. Sorry cry 👶, but Life happens. Authors aren't accountable to you. So very sorry their death of a family member or whatever has caused the delay that they most likely aren't happy about either has "inconvenienced" you.

I like deckled edges, but I have so many series where the first one has deckled edges but the others don't and it drives me nuts. 😒 My main book related pet peeve are the tweets and videos of people complaining about dumpsters full of books and "why can't we just donate them". I collect books and I love them but I've worked with donated books for years and let me tell you it gives me great joy to recycle and get rid of a lot of them. If you see a dumpster full of books I promise they're there for a reason either they're ancient and outdated or disgusting and you don't want them in your house. There are plenty of books in the world and sometimes they've lived their life and it's time to say goodbye.

A New pet peeve of mine is a book review where it’s obvious the writer of the review did NOT read the book 🤨 A perfect example: I read the book “Calm the F*ck Down”. I personally, did NOT like the book. I only read it because a really good friend of mine was reading it and told me, “the humor in this book reminded me of you! I think you’d like it!” That was such a sweet thought, I immediately got the book and read it......and disliked it. 😑 IMMENSELY. The writer has had other best selling books and even this one was rated pretty good, overall. I looked over to the negative reviews to see if anyone felt like I did AND MOST OF THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS (on Amazon anyway) were writing by angry Trump-supporters who wrote “This book is awful. The author hates MY PRESIDENT and this terrible book is obviously anti-Patriotic. Throw this book away blah blah blah”. 😨🤭 first of all, yeah, the author wrote a few jokes about Trump but I read the entire book and there were, at most, maybe 3 jokes about him in 1-blurb lines that weren’t even that funny. I barely even remembered they were there; I had to look back through the book to remember if that’s where I had read those jokes. All the negative reviews were negative BECAUSE of that alone. Nothing else! I personally didn’t like the book cuz I couldn’t relate to it, the advice was very superficial, very don’t-think-about-it-too-deeply, and the advice would only be practical if you are childless and have a fat bank account to fall back on. But do any of the negative reviews mention any criticism of substance?! Nope; not a single one! At least not when I last read them. 👋🏼😑

@@JessOwens personally i think making a tbr is great bc sometimes if i don't have a clear idea of what to read next i end up in a slump, but i find it so funny when creators who i know read maybe 4-10 books a month (which to make myself clear reading ANYTHING AT ALL even just a page is amazing!! everyone do your own pace!!) make a 20 book tbr like honey we all know you won't read that, you'll just stress out/be disappointed when books and reading are meant to be fun!

I think the thing with old book spoilers is that if a book is like 70+ years old, and still talked about today (like, if you've already heard of it even not having read), then I don't think spoilers are bad because that book and its plot are probably already woven into our society and like, we know the story without even reading it- it's like Jekyll and Hyde, the Great Gatsby and Wuthering Heights

I love this video, it was so much fun to watch. 😂 I always look up reviews before reading a book, and I pay more attention to the lower ratings just to get a sense of what I might encounter in the book. I've never been someone who would avoid ranting or posting "negative" reviews as long as I keep it professional and not attack the author (or other readers). I've given up trying to keep up with the hype, I just read what I like and let others do the same, I don't even care if we share the same opinion on the books/genres or not. Too much stress for a hobby that's supposed to be fun and entertaining. 😅
