I'm struggling with this rn!! Mostly in the books I read, where I'm so weary of 7 book long series that apparently get good by book 5 (as if any of us have the time or energy for that).
But I'm also an aspiring author and the book I'm writing is getting longer and longer as I edit it but I can't split it into 2 books without either adding so much unnecessary detail or making two incomplete stories instead of one long story. I know publishers rarely publish long novels as debuts so I'm kind of worried that an editor/agent will ask me to cut out scenes that I feel are necessary.

As an author, that’s intentional. Publishers charge more for ebooks because they KNOW readers will switch to physical over a certain price. And they make more money in the process. Authors make a higher percentage on ebooks than on physical ones, so when ebook prices are too high and you get physical, authors receive a lower percent. It’s a win-win for them.

YES! I'm a big fantasy reader and every time I open a POC-authored book there must be a racism plot, or a skin tone discrimination (colorism). I heard rumors authors are asked to add these or face rejection, editors will pick the "racism plot" book over one without, so authors are pressured to add them to stand a chance.
I recently started The Gilded Ones which I thought was an African Fantasy, but noooope, first chapter starts in a village of white people with the main character being half-Black and immediately slandered and discriminated for her skin color. Why does it have to be always like that...

Your friendly US neighborhood librarian here, can confirm the theory about ebooks being difficult to get into libraries. Sometimes, we do have to wait a certain amount of time before we can purchase the ebook of a physical book we have. And yes, most of the ebooks have access to a copy purchased for either a 12 to 24 month period of time. Rarely do you find books that are just purchased outright, especially of new titles.

However, I've see it both ways, which I think is why some libraries will buy access to multiple copies of a title.

To clarify: Tia Williams told them no! (Good for her) . However this confirmed to me that publishing has a very narrow idea of “black stories”. I think blk authors can have trauma in their books but it should be their choice and not a requirement to get published.

Re: ebook prices, remember publishing houses sued Amazon to increase prices beyond the $9.99 cap. And that greed is multiplied, because authors make a smaller percentage on physical books than ebooks. So those high ebook prices are MEANT to push you to getting the physical copy, because the author only gets 10-15% of a physical copy versus 35-40% of ebook versions.

To your point about ebooks and libraries: I work in an Academic library and we saw a significant increase in the price of licenses for ebooks during the pandemic. It was infuriating- these publishers just saw a way to take advantage of lockdowns/quarantines and knowing that library's hands were tied because their customers couldn't physically come onto campus. Its even more infuriating that public library services will have been affected in the same way because, at least in the UK, they are grossly underfunded.

We can thank Amazon for helping make it difficult for libraries to get multiple copies of new releases. They dedicated time to tracking the number of borrows (through the read with kindle option) for new releases and provided that info to publishing companies. A few months later the announcement came that libraries would be restricted to 1 copy of a new release for the 1st 90 days because that's when the most sales come in.

I think the thing about the best seller lists is true because an author actually did buy a spot on the list. They didn't hype the book first, so I think the sudden appearance of the book caught people off guard and made them question it. They figured out exactly what they did and the book was pulled from the list.
I think the biggest scam is publishing itself. They have been using authors and paying them as little as possible for years. The contracts are predatory. The entire system is stacked against the very people that they need in order to exist.

The author editing one is actually true. I have worked in the book world for 8 years now and I have heard people across the field say that. When authors get more popular editors have a lighter touch on their books because they know they will sell and often times have more faith in those authors. But as we all know, good editing can make or break a book!

There was, at least at one point, a way to rig yourself onto the NYT Bestsellers List. One author's book was removed from the list a few years back because everyone believed that her and her publisher essentially bought the books themselves to get her on the list. I'm not sure if that was ever proven, but her book wasn't available through a lot of the major retailers, so the high sales were very suspicious. (Yes, this can absolutely be done in other industries. Music famously also has a problem with this, and K-Pop groups from smaller labels are regularly accused of sajaegi, which is when the label bulk buys their own artists' albums to push them higher up the charts to try to get people curious and listen to the song.)

I truly believe editors are just not editing at the same rate they used to! Like why am I picking up multiple books published in the last year by major houses with BASIC grammar issues and typos that even programs as simple as Grammarly would have picked up on?!? It’s not making sense!

The library/ebook one is *absolutley* true. I believe it was Hachette, and maybe MacMillen were limiting libraries to ONE e-copy of their books for something like a year. What ended that policy was the pandemic. Hopefully they don’t go back, either.

    • @marzipan9

And I agree with the editing thing. It feels like certain books just…don’t get much editing because publishers know that people will buy it even if it’s a jumbled hot mess. The last book I read that needed a few more editing passes was Tamron Hall’s book. But why bother spending the money when people will buy it based on her name alone?

I totally agree with your point about books written by PoC not getting the development/editing/marketing that white books do! I've given many trade pub YA books by PoC 3 stars or less for this very reason. It's so frustrating when it's clear the story didn't get the attention and development it deserved before it got published. And simultaneously...certain white authors get free reign to publish whatever whenever (SJM!) and people will eat it up.

But I think a lot of them have established platforms elsewhere (a popular main channel or TikTok). I attribute a lot of this to the popularity of BookTok. This was kind of a thing before like, if you searched ‘book recommendations’ or ‘how to read more’ the top videos were from non-BookTube channels, usually some kind of productivity/self-help/lifestyle channels. I think the last person I’ve seen grow organically that fast was probably Noelle.

About the library ebook thing... My library system in Ontario has a thing where a certain book (or books) will be available for unlimited downloads by users for a period of time. It's usually to promote a heritage month - for example, right now Noopiming by Leanne Betasamosake Simpson is available for Indigenous History Month (and it's excellent btw). I wonder what kind of agreements are in place for libraries and publishers to make that happen?
I also think that while more authors of colour are getting published, fewer might be getting subsequent deals. If the debut isn't a runaway success, they're (to my completely unsubstantiated suspicion) probably less likely to get second book deals compared to white authors. No idea if that's true though (and if it is, I wish it wasn't)!
Also thank you for all the captioning work you put into your videos!! I've been using subtitles more and more and it's always such a joy when someone edits their captions from the automated system.

I agree about the editing and rushing books out for a trend. I felt that way with Legendborn - it needed more editing imo, it did not need to be 500 pages long for a YA, but it was pushed out to fit into peak BLM interest to ride that wave. However in this case it could be worth it, it was a big success when it came out.

  • @TaraDobbs
    @TaraDobbs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I'm listening to this episode of yours while I'm putting together my new art drafting table. I have to chime in now before I continue with this build...I was 'kinda self published' back in 2014 (it was a small publishing company and it only sold 50 copies paperback and digital). My 'publisher' told me I could contact my local library system to get my book onto shelves that way. So, I contacted Sno-Isle Libraries system to purchase a few copies of my book. They bought two copies. So, yes libraries have to buy books themselves, but only if the publisher or self published author ask for copies or it's on the publisher's list for X amount of libraries to house copies at a set amount, unless otherwise determined to get more due to popularity. A few years later, after I relieved myself of the contract with that publisher, obtaining all my rights of the material, I contacted two Sno-Isle Libraries if I could buy those copies back. Which I was able to only buy one as the books since one was stolen. It cost the library system nearly $40 for the books and it cost me .25 cents to buy the single copy back. Now you know far more about publishing and libraries.
I completely agree about the lack of quality control and editing that is needed more in books no matter the popularity or pay level an author has. I'm tired of coming across books with so many issues. It is why I'm working on my books so heavily to be as cleaned up as possible before querying. I don't need an editor, says most agents, but I want to get that extra clean up that way the agent doesn't work so hard to further clean up areas. That when the book is sold to a publisher, they will find the right editor for my work that will go through further edits. In the long run, I want book 2 and book 3 to stay as tightly consistent as the first one that begins the whole story. It's also why I'm working on an extensive outline for the third book and cleaning up the last half of Act 1 of book 2. The main edits must come from the author themselves before anything professional level happens. It is part of the craft that must be learned at all costs. I don't want my future readers to be the 'unexpected' editor when they intended to read the book whole out after buying it at a bookstore. Ya know? You're job as the reader is to enjoy the story, not to find all the editing issues that were ignored by editors or ignored further by the author who was tasked in fixing other issues before the final copy was sent to fine tooth comb line/copy editing. I want quality and so does the reader deserve the same in the final product. It's that important to me.

Industry....a book is $15. or $29......15% will go to the agent....20% will go the place....and the author usually gets 00.1% out of that. Like....out out of every book sold, the author will get 86 pence if they are lucky. Yet, they have to sell 5,000 books per month to make back the advance they get BEFORE they start earning. You have about 3 months in total to show your findings before they kick you out for low preformance. Yes seriously, there has been a lot of talk about this. I know I’ve heard a lot of allegations that a lot of prominent Republican politicians buy their way on to the NYT bestseller list by having their campaign or the RNC buy a ton of copies of their book right at release, and then warehouse them and sell them again on like the campaign website in order to hop on the bestseller list on day one of the book. Idk about publishers doing this to mainstream books but I know this is likely a practice with political books and biographies.

The reason why the digital file has the same or similar price as the physical book is that publishers can't get bookshops against them. If digital was way cheaper, it would affect physical sales. The same happens with videogames and you can already see it here in Latam, we don't have official distributors for certain companies and importing comes with lots of extra taxes, so more and more people are just buying one huge SD card and sticking to digital because of the price difference.

It's kind of funny because my uncle's firm (he's a CPA) will not even *look* at a resume/application if it comes from anyone with ties to the firm, which I personally think is going a bit *too* far, because sometimes good accountants - in this case - have children/relatives who are also good accountants. However, I also have like mighty respect for them because even if they're losing some good accountants, at least the people they're hiring are good, and you *know* you and everyone else around you has actually *earned* that spot.

18:51 There is a nasty thing going on with editing and publishing.....the industry go by tiers...1.2. and 3.. .and it depends on what tier you on to whether you be noticed by them or not. It is a nasty trend that the top 1 tier will have all the attention and focus, the second will have a bit and if your a 3rd tier....you may as well do it yourself. They don't tell you anything, they expect you to know it yourself. Not only that, they expect you do market your book. Oh......and some publishers will only take you on if you have a certain amount of following on your platform. Unless your popular, you won't get far by them. Yes, a lot of professional books are badly edited now, since they are all rushed out. James Patterson and a few home grown publish 4 books per month. The Industry doesn't follow the same rules the writers ''grow up'' with.

As an aspiring author, I can answer the editing question (well, part of it). Because of creative control issues, I've decided not to query and go the indie route. However, the indie author sphere has gotten a bad rap, because there's no gatekeeping, as in traditional publishing. Basically, anyone can be an indie author. The encouragement to still use traditional publishing as a "guide" is high. Which means many indie authors (not all), usually have multiple professional editors go over their manuscripts. This is to make the story as tight as humanly possible. There will always be minor errors that slip through, but having multiple sets of eyes on the same manuscript helps a great deal. On the flip side, a lot of times traditional publishers bank more on the fact they're major traditional publishers with a reputation than pumping out an excellent product. This is because of editors being overworked and underpaid. A lot of those major publishing house editors become freelancers who work with indie authors. I know my manuscript will have 5 different professional editors (possibly with multiple rounds each of edits), plus critique partners and beta readers. Whether or not the story is good is up to the reader. By the time I'm done, I will put out the best product I can. Ok rant over, continue with the show.😁
