About not leaving bad reviews: That purposely skews reviews to be positive so that people aren't getting a true representation of the quality of the author's work. If a book is riddled with typos and bad pacing PLEASE let me know so that I don't have to waste my time! I only have so many days on this earth! Presuming that everyone must be nice about a book your wrote or liked when there's so many people with different tastes is delusional. I'm sorry. That being said, if someone is coming in and being purposely malicious to authors for whatever personal gain, that's not cute either. Having honest discourse about the merits of something is completely valid and people from both sides are taking it to extremes.

Nowadays, a manuscript is expected to be pretty polished before you even begin shopping for an agent. Agents are doing less and less to help edit the manuscripts they sign; they only sign it if they think they can sell it to an editor/publisher almost straightaway. (Or an author might receive what's called a "revise and resubmit" in which case the agent isn't signing the author but is giving feedback so the author can rewrite and resubmit and *maybe* get signed.) On the publishing side, editors are also under pressure to get books out more quickly, and if they think the book will sell, they aren't incentivized to put a huge amount of time or energy into edits. Not saying they don't edit at all, but not big, structural edits, which are expected to have been done well before the manuscript was signed and sold. There's kind of a "good enough" attitude--if it'll sell anyway, and if we can get more books out by cutting back the editing cycle... This is obviously not true for every book, agent, or publisher, but it's more true than it used to be.

18:24 Oh bestie! settle down and get comfy as this is going be a long comment:
if you have a great story, you need to have it all written, like all the way to the end, at least some self-editing (she says as cringes away from the first draft of her YA thriller that ended up with a highly commended award after multiple edits) then you need to write a query and a synopsis (I would rather rip out my hair) then you need to query agents (if you want to go the traditional publishing route) and then after going through 60-70 agents (many go through more) you end up doing some edits with the agent, then submissions to publishers, where you go through edits with the in-house editor, plus line edits and your final edits of grammar and spelling and stuff, then finally the book reaches the market.
Phew! I am not even at the query stage and I am already simultaneously weeping as I almost give up on the book I love and want to see published one day, and then daydreaming about writing the sequel and Netflix show and who I will cast and then I drag myself back to my edits.
The reason why sequels feel rushed is because at the moment, we can take years to work on the first book and do all of the above, then we are expected to do the same for Book 2 (or a separate book that's part of the 2 book deal) but in a compressed timescale of 1-2 years, while also going possibly the final edits, launch and debut year of Book 1, which includes doing a lot of publicity (even where the publisher is putting good publicity budgets behind the book). If Book 1 doesn't sell, then well that can really sink someone's career in the genre, so they will need to spend a lot of time on social media, doing interviews, blog tours etc.
Bearing in mind, most of us will also be working jobs while we do this as book money isn't enough to be a full time author unless you break out massively or have other sources of income (e.g. family or partner). Plus most authors also have families to look after and covid, with work from home and homeschooling is really piling the pressure. Editors and agents are also overloaded at the moment.
So in conclusion, please support authors you love, especially the smaller debuts and if they have written something you liked, help them promote it, write reviews, and if you can, say a kind word to them on social media, as it will really fuel them to make Book 2 the very best it can be.
(thank you for coming to my TedTalk! 😂)

I don’t remember all the specifics and like the Raytheon sponsorship is bad no matter what, but Discon 3 was a hot mess behind the scenes. Like there were multiple mass resignations of the board and people being booted from positions and all kinds of issues with various policies/communications. Mary Robinette was brought on board only six months before the con to basically fix EVERYTHING.
Like she is the Chair and her being the one to fall on the sword over this made sense, and like I trust that she genuinely would be sorry about and feel responsible for. At the same time though, I would be shocked if she actually had anything to do with the decision given just who she is and how fucked up the whole con’s history had been before she was even involved with it.

The FOSTA-SESTA law is doing exactly what it was meant to do. It was pushed through by lobbyists for that nonprofits hate porn/sex in general. When they realized that they weren't going to win the fight directly against porn, they started coming at it from a trafficking route (some even rebranded themselves, like the National Center on Sexual Exploitation which used to be known as Morality in Media). The language used in the law was overly broad on purpose so that it can be used to target basically anything to do with sex (hence the take down of Ruby Dixon's books). A lot of companies and people have been targeted by them because of the law. And honestly, it isn't doing much to combat human trafficking. Sorry for the rant. The whole thing pisses me off so much. Anyways, loved the video

    • @marymik7372
      @marymik7372 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Yes, exactly! It makes me so mad because the hypocrisy is so evident in these arguments. Similar reasoning is being used to support not teaching basic sexual health to children in school because they say it leads to higher trafficking, earlier teen pregnancies, and higher rates of STDs but research shows the exact opposite. Not to mention, how are children supposed to be able to communicate they are being abused if they aren't taught the language, what is right and wrong, or are shamed for their bodies. Mama Dr. Jones had a good video about it recently. Sorry I had to add to your rant but I HATE that these people use the guise of "protecting children" to push their own agenda. Truly despicable behavior.

Far as the YA thing that's really adults not realizing we can enjoy YA but it's not for us so stop judging it so harshly.

Girl, that Sokoloff and Heart Breathings thing was a mess! Sarah is so nice and I've downloaded her worksheets because they're so helpful. It's a damn shame that Sokoloff has the audacity to get on Beyonce's internet and try to finesse her way into some cash with that bogus lawsuit. I'm just mad that I bought her lil screenwriter's book off Amazon a few years ago. Plus my friend taught a class referencing her book for my MFA program's teaching portion. Is my friend going to get sued too?! Also, if Sokoloff needed some money because no one is buying her books, she just needs to say that. But trying to come for a creator who does give her proper credit and directs her followers and class attendees to all the materials she's gotten her information from is too much for me. I would delete Sokoloff's book off my Kindle, but I paid for it so she already got my coins 😒.

Oh man, thank you for covering Sarra Canon's stuff. That poor woman has been constantly on the move this year (Family lost the house they were going to buy and are finally getting settled 6 months later). This has been going on since early last year it seems and Sarra is one of those kind TH-camrs who always links the books she's referencing. She would talk up that woman book and beg us to buy it. Now getting to read what the lawyer said... Alexandra really has no foot to stand on and should take our favorite Author Lawyer's advice and drop this. I was going to buy her books, now, nah. Not worth it to be around someone who can't drop it after the lawyers have told her to drop it.
Thank you as always for doing these videos. Minor drama on Tiktok though. Some woman is writing a Nazi romance novel. It's the current drama if you want to dive down that rabbithole. Hope you and Nigel are getting rest and staying hydrated!

But then she said it wasfrom the German POV. Then she's put out the synopsis... and it's worse. Cause the heroine is supposed to be Jewish and the guy is a Nazi. It's messed up. Majorly messed up. It's opened up a LOT of talk about who really are the authors we are watching.

I like worst of lists. But. I think it's dicey when an author does it. Because that's your professional space, too. You never know if you'll end up working with an another author. Or if a publisher sees the list and decides to not work with you because one of their books was on the list. It's a matter of public face for your business.

People have really got to learn to separate their feelings and emotions towards a book from other people's opinions. For their own mental health. Someone not liking a book, doesn't make your enjoyment of it any less valid. Like heck, I'm a subscriber and love you Jess and our reading tastes are so different, but that's what makes reading fun. For ex I loved the Love Hypothesis but was also dying laughing at your review when you were talking about the tata/ mouth scene. It's really not that serious and not a personal attack when someone doesn't love a book that you do. Worst of lists will continue to be entertaining.

TBH I wonder if YA authors getting mad about Jami's tweets realize that Jami's only revealing a siginificant part of the decline in interest in YA because the authors of colour who are able to now tell their stories are often pigeonholed into writing narrative structures established by white editors and authors during the YA boom because that's what editors and other indutry pros think is going to sell since that is what used to sell. The problem isn't really the reader raising these concerns but the industry that's sticking to a previous business model that served and repped a minority of the readers out there, and as a result, created a stroy structure that has now been done to death and no longer interests us because we've seen it in books, movies, shows, etc..

Generally speaking, it's bad form for *authors* in particular to **critically** review other authors in their genres because it's anti-competitive. Amazon, for instance, will remove reviews between friends of their own books.
While some have taken the self-rating of author novels on goodreads to mean Amazon (and therefore all ethics and laws 🙄) has given self-reviewing and reviewing by authors the green light, the problems with criticizing others in your own genre are still there.

This may be petty, but my issue with the "Worst/Bad Books" lists are that the people making the videos really mean "Books I Don't Like." Liking something is subjective, whereas something being "bad" is more objective. I feel like calling things bad or saying they're the worst is really clickbait-y, but everyone does it, so thats too bad for me. 🤷‍♀️

I think part of the reason the books may sound the same or not be “as interesting” other than the time constraints IN A PANDEMIC but also because the publishing houses essentially get to choose which books they even want to move forward with. I bet there are a lot of books that were really unique that never got to see the light of day because they were unique. Also I feel like some books even if they get published may have such a small marketing budget for whatever reason that us readers may not actually get to them because we didn’t know about them. It’s always what will be the next Twilight or Hunger Games and never what book is completely unique and we want to push it for that reason.

There is a phenomenon that is discussed among some academics (Anand Ghiridharadas), that is the rehabilitation of "wealthy and problematic" companies and people through donations to prestigious colleges and universities and the non profit orgs who then sing praises for the opportunities that the companies/people made possible only through their donations. There's also a video about how philanthropy was created by the wealthy to maintain the racist economic hierarchy, as opposed to systemic change. I'll reference the video when I find it.

I think you made some good points, re: “is YA getting worse?” thing. I’ve definitely found myself drawn less and less to YA fantasy, while still giving chances to stories from BIPOC and other underrepresented authors, as it’s true they’re only now getting chances, and even if they’re not spectacular, I tend to like the detail put into the world building with the cultural influences. And I tend to enjoy other genres within YA, like contemporary or mystery/thriller a bit more, especially as those are less likely to be interwoven series.
Also, I actually saw people saying that they don’t do best of lists either, because they feel bad about leaving people out. Like wtf is this participation trophy culture we’re living in? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I sometimes think because YA Twitter is so reactive publishers have become overly careful and try to create uncontroversial books that can't become the center of social media maelstroms. The result can be a very dull book, though.

I'm part of a group that performed at Discon and the Hugo Awards and absolutely nobody knew about Raytheon being a sponsor until the little social they threw directly before the Hugo Awards. The lead person for the whole convention (Mary Robinette Kowal) was not very nice to my group, either.

  • @sarahlopod
    @sarahlopod 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Honestly, I do think the Raytheon sponsorship was 'bad' in that you don't want to support a company that commits war crimes (obviously) but I think that was Discon's responsibility to look into and blame shouldn't lie with the Hugo awards themselves (or the authors who received the awards).

The thing is with YA, is that the bad books, or the lower quality books usually become representative of it as a category. It doesn't matter that there are lapses in other categories and genres or there are poor tropes in others or bad books in other genres, but with YA it becomes what it is. I know this because I literally studied the attitudes on YA and surprise surprise, it is negative for no good reason.

Congratulations on 30K! It's because you're loved, blessed, and we love tea!
The whole worst list thing, ugh, I agree if you don't like it don't watch, but I am a nosey bitch and want to know what people disliked, and, yeah some of the books I loved others didn't, but everyone has right to their opinion because they may not have liked the characters, the plot, the trope, the ending, etc. No one has to agree with each other all the time since everyone has their own unique reading tastes. Also, I too find books I may enjoy from people's worst list or disappointed list and sometimes it helps me if I am teetering on reading that book or holding out by some people's reviews of a book. Just the same shade on a different day and anyone who comes for Gavin again is going to be met with a Neegan bat to the face.
If she didn't parent her idea or book then she has no legal standing. If she wanted it copyrighted she needed to fill out a form for that so it could be and I think send a proof of it, forgive me it's been a long moment, but I did research this and I am sure things might have changed, yet this is what I remember when I wanted to self publish a book in the early 2000's. What someone did say to me is if you don't want someone stealing your ideas in your book is to mail the final draft handwritten, not typed with the date and your signature on that draft. Then when it comes in don't open it because it also has a date on it and you can prove that someone stole your manuscript or whatever. Now, I don't know if that would work with technology today and so many people with beautiful imaginations that someone may accidentally write something similar to what you wrote years ago. I think this lady is just being a Karen.

the last story with the author drama is kind of strange to me lol, i don't really get how general ideas for writing advice can be copyrighted. If she wants to get salty about it and call the other author out that's probably not a good idea anyways, but to get ~lawyers~ involved doesn't really make sense to me.

When I started writing, I had no clue about the process a book takes to get published. So, I wanted to share what I have learned in my own search for an agent in regards to the YA timeline discussion.
First time authors must have a completed story, not a first draft, to query agents. Sometimes, they can directly query smaller publishing companies, but they still need a completed story. Once an agent shows interest, in most cases they work with the author on developmental edits (story, characters, pacing, plot, etc.) and the author completes their edits. Once this is done, the agent puts the story on submission to acquiring editors at different publishing houses. If the book gets picked up, the publisher will assign an editor to the book for another round of developmental edits. This runs into line edits (in-depth writing edits) and proof-reading.
That being said, some agents are not editorial and some publishers likely skip steps in service of timeline. This is just a generic path for a traditionally published books.
Note: Authors with a name and proven track record can sell books before they write them, but no first time author is selling anything without a full, self-edited manuscript.

I feel like I've always been in and out of the YA space, even when I was a teen because of all the lit books I read in school taking up so much time. Part of that is obviously aging, part of it changing trends, and part of it is simply finding new genres that I like that are outside of the YA demographic. Also, on a personal note, I've been subscribed to OwlCrate on and off for the past few years, and literally all of 2021 they had fantasy YA books revolving around witches or sisters and I couldn't take it anymore, and that's kept me away because everything felt the same to me.
But if I were to place any "blame" on someone, I think it's on editors and publishers for leaning too hard on said trends (covers that look the same, titles that sound the same, and yes timelines that rush it all).

On the not leaving bad reviews topic - I think there's a difference in being honest and being rude. I have to critique the work of my peers every day and I'm honest without being a jerk, that's what irks me about snarky GoodReads reviewers. Yes people can have a negative opinion and share it on the internet but it is possible to be critical without being cruel. Whether or not we want to admit it or buy into "death of the author" someone put their time and energy into that work. Roasting art can be funny and rant reviews are entertaining but I bet if it was our work most of us wouldn't be singing the same tune. That's like telling people on TH-cam to just "ignore the haters" that leave rude comments about their videos or the content that they make. Yeah we should all have tough skin but easier said than done....

I've been watching Booktube since like 2010 and it's very true! Every time I see an argument over something like the worst books thing I'm like "we talked about this 5 years ago why we still doing this."
My thing is criticism of a book is fair game if you can support your points (eg reasons you didn't like it and why), you aren't attacking the author as a person and you aren't attacking the people who do like the book (eg "anyone who likes this book is stupid"). People take other people's opinions way too personally and forget that everyone has different tastes and that's fine. And authors know they are facing feedback of all kinds when they publish a book. If they struggle with the negative feedback it's understandable but it's on them to handle it, not the readers.
As for YA, one of the biggest issue I have with YA is that everything is a series. I get it from a business sense - more books = more money. But most of the YA book trilogies could be standalone or duologies and most of the 4+ book series could be trilogies. I think a lot of YA books could be much stronger if they stopped trying to stretch the content out over multiple books.

Hahaha your commentary on the "worst of lists" is so funny. I agree with everything you said. I like to watch people's worst books videos just to see if I WANT to read them. Also, if I wrote a book and it appeared on a "worst books" list, I think I'd be happy for the free publicity/marketing 😂
So something I'm trying to navigate myself is being a writer, but also 'critiquing' and giving 'worst' rankings. I'm not published, but this is still something I think about ALL the time. It's tricky. A published author posting a 'worst books of xxxx' might just not be as professional and might lose connection with other authors, but...not sure what the answer is. A writer can also be a reader, so which space do they really belong to?

Thank you for talking about the complaints about worst book lists. Like... we should be allowed to talk about our feelings about the books and stories we have read, even if they're negative. These videos are for readers, not authors.
Edit: (Adding comments as I go...) I think having Raytheon sponsor was a HUGE mistake. I do get that most cons need to have corporate sponsors at this point, and they are generally morally compromised in some way ('cuz capitalism) but Raytheon is... cartoonishly evil. I feel like they're the epitome of corporatized imperialism and state violence that so many beloved, progressive SciFi authors have warned against in their writing (though there is ofc the contingent of SciFi writers who glorify that).

So that last one. You can have a copyright on the book and the text. The "method" wouldn't be covered. It sounds like the attorneys on both sides agree, so this person is trying to die on the hill of the book being copyright protected. The second person couldn't publish exact passages from the book (or you know the grey area is it/isn't it copied stuff by changing very few lines) but nothing is stopping them from taking the ideas and writing their own stuff about it. Idk if you can even patent that stuff like the 3 act structure, it's basic tenets of writing and screenplays. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Like even comparing it to "ancient Greece" is nothing new. 😅 Where did SHE get it from? Meditating on a mountain? Or did she learn it from someone else too? 🙄

The Raytheon thing with the Hugos is interesting. On the one hand, I am 100% not a fan of Raytheon or any war-industry companies like them. On the other hand, Raytheon sponsors events like this ALL the time. This isn’t a new thing at all. Do the Hugo Awards specifically take an anti-war stance as an event? It would be awesome if they did, but I would be surprised at that choice too, because I feel like a decent amount of SF is not anti-war in tone or message. 🤷‍♀️ I really don’t love that Raytheon sponsors events for good PR, and this is probably a good move on the part of the Hugo awards, but are they actually taking an anti-war stance now, too, or is this specific example changing because of general blowback? Not the worst outcome, but also not the best
