    I can't believe that you are holding the radio by the antenna. That is bad for the radio. Just taking the antenna off and on is not good but holding it by the antenna is terrible.

    • @TheNotaRubicon
      @TheNotaRubicon  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +30

      and yet, it still works perfectly. Obviously you don't understand how antennas and radios work.

    • @JawTooth
      @JawTooth 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@TheNotaRubicon I have damaged radios that way. The connection from the antenna to the radio can come loose and I have had that happen. Your radio will not receive or transmit as well if you keep doing that. I have had these radios since the mid 80s and I know what I'm talking about. Through normal wear and tear, an antenna can become kinked or broken. Another way antenna can become damaged is if users pick the radio up by the antenna. This can cause damage at the connection point to the radio.

    • @sexybitch6605
      @sexybitch6605 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well radio reference website is dead. Those moderators banned so many members that it killed the hobby off let alone what technology did. Those moderators did not contribute to keeping the radio hobby alive instead they killed it off by not offering any kind of assistance or information. No technical support. The salespeople in the stores always said go to that website because the salepeople didn't know a thing about the radio hobby they were just into the marketing aspect of it. So now radio reference is just a mere shell of its self. It serves them well. 🤣🤣😂🤣

    There are about 5 states that you can be arrested in for having this radio in your car. You are exempt if you are an amateur radio operator like me. However, if the police don't know about the exemption you are screwed. I was arrested in Kentucky. They towed my car and went through all my stuff. I had to go to court where all charges were dropped when I showed the judge the exemption in the law. Did I get an apology from the police? No.

    Been enjoying your videos for a while now. The best part is your tone. These are just toys for an otherwise useless hobby. I understand they would be the final communication tool when the apocalypse hits - so, go ahead, have fun, keep it running. But at this point in human civilization everybody carries a radio, sans license, that can communicate around the world. I own a Baofeng AND a full ham radio but don't have nor need a license. Should the occasion ever require the use of either devices, having a license will be the bottom of anything anyone cares about.
    TL;DR - hams, your close to useless hobby does not deserve the dead serious behavior you all seem to want to push. It is no longer the pre 1970's - lighten up.

    I bought the newest UV5R I could find to communicate with my friends in the back country. It was a UV5R GMRS. What have I done?

      You bought a GMRS radio, which can only talk to other GMRS (and FRS) radios, not to any HAM radio... ;-)

      That UV5R GMRS radio should work great with any other GMRS radio and even those cheap bubble pack FRS radios at wallmart. Tell your friends to get one and you should be good to go. Have fun out in the back country with the radios and then come back here and give us a full report.

    Is there any way to turn off the little tiny green light when receiving a transmission

    Dumb noob question!! I’m trying to connect to a local repeater. Site owner sent me the freq and input tone and output tone only. I plopped them into the radio, I can hear people but no one hears me. The map on mygrms shows lm in range of said repeater. Other than setting the frequency and input/output tone, is there something else I need? 🤔

    Hi @NotaRubicon Productions, I am a newcomer to HAM Radios. When i was researching about these Baofeng devices, I noticed that there are two different 8 watts versions available. Do you know the difference between uv-5rtp vs uv 5r8w ? Is one of these a fake ?

    Which radios would you get for friends and families to communicate in a disaster across the country?

    • @TheNotaRubicon

      Good quality ham HF units with directional antennas on the roof. You're not going to find any handheld nor low-cost/simple radios that can reliably communicate across the country.

    Really, the only critically important setting is 'roger beep enable' :)

    Where can I get an antenna like the one on your UV-5R in your video?

    I've been using my UV5R to hit a repeater 50 miles away with my yagi. 👍

      However, I prefer my Yaesu 2980 because I don't get walked on during checkins at 80 watts.

    Brother you skipped addressing Tctcs and T dcs settings?
    How come ?
    Any these settings can possibly make other party listening just transmission without modulation (voice ) through the repeater?

    My radio won't retain the BCL setting. It turns off if I exit menu or just go to a different menu option after confirming my choice. Is this affected by another setting?

    • @TheNotaRubicon
      @TheNotaRubicon  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No. You will have to either learn to cope with it or toss it in the trash and invest $19 in a new one.
