In this episode of the WNH knitting podcast, I discuss the progress on my striped tea pattern and share my experience knitting a Shadow wrap heel for the first time. I provide updates on my husband's socks, which I'm knitting with Patons Kroy yarn, and talk about the challenges and benefits of knitting two socks at once. Stay tuned for more updates on my projects and future knitting plans!

Sorry for the delay folks! I had to rerecord this episode. I hope you enjoy! And just FYI, if I'm ever not able to get a video up as scheduled, I always let you know over on the Community Tab, so check there when in doubt. ❤
I can’t be the first one to recommend Denise, Earthtones Girl’s short row shadow wrap heel tutorial. Please check it out - definitely a game-changer. Do it, please!
Yes ❤ you took the words out of my mouth 👌 I do only shadow wrap thanks too her.
I learned so fast from her, I couldn't believe it myself. Denise is awesome 🤗
Will do! I'm going to use Denise's tutorial for the second heel. ❤
I agree, her tutorials changed my sock knitting; that said, my husband loves the old fashioned ribbed heel for everything but dress socks! They were the only heel I knew back then. My family all wore a medium shoe with a aa heel, weirdly thin feet, and now they don’t make shoes like that anymore, so that thicker heel was very comfortable on us. My grandmother taught me that heel and my husband says it makes his shoes and boots more comfortable!
Love Denise’s shadow wrap-it seems to knit up more quickly than a traditional flap and gusset style. May not be quite as durable or fit everyone’s foot as well. Pros and cons to everything!🧦🧶
Oh yes! That video was great. I watched it and purchased the pattern for the 2nd heel to support her.
Totally agree on the 2AATime. Have been knitting concurrently lately as I find knitting on the same needles too heavy. I do a shadow wrap heels sometimes and found a great tutorial that I now use- “Modified shadow wrapped short row heel” from The Chilly Dog. Love it! Thanks for sharing all of your findings and knitting experiences!
I love the shadow wrap heel! I use it exclusively. I couldn't even finish learning a heel flap and gusset lol. I find it to be quite quick after a few pairs of socks. I used the video tutorial from Denise of EarthtonesGirls on TH-cam.
Same! After using this tutorial it made perfect sense and I love knitting it and wearing it more than any other heel 👌
Tayler, we DEFINITELY need a merch project bag that says “ the juice is worth the squeeze”!
The juice is worth the squeeze. 🍋🟩 🍊
I only ever use the shadow wrap heel. I like how it cups the heel 😊 My daughter taught me how to do it! I can do a heel in 20 minutes! You just need to practice a bit😊
I highly recommend The Chilly Dog for her great tutorials on shadow wrap heels. There are variations that are fun to try.
I learned the Danish technique in avoiding jogs in stripes from Kutavakika knits TH-cam channel. On the SECOND row with the new color, just lift the stitch from the tow below. It’s in her video for the Sailor Swift top (a really fun knit).
I love Pâtons Kroy for socks. I wear them all winter wash in the machine lay flat to dry. Some of “my” socks are three years old and look new.
Love your channel.
Thank you Shelley! And yes. Patons Kroy is a total workhorse. I need to knit more socks with it!
That duo dyed red. is. everything.
I feel similarly loyal to Regia for durable socks. They’re the only hand knitted socks I wear without worry about damaging them, and for me that’s freeing.
"Juice is worth the squeeze!" 😅😅 That's a new one in me, but I love it! Great episode, as usual! ❤❤
Thank you so much Jackie! And I honestly think that the only place I've ever heard that phrase used, besides a recent Marques Brownlee podcast episode, was in the movie 'The Girl Next Door' (2004). But I love it too. It just suits so many things!
I think I've knit every kind of short-row heel there is. The shadow-wrap heel is by far the fastest, IMHO.
Beetroot! That new duo dip colour is totally beetroot. Looked amazing against your chartreuse jumper. 💕❤️💚
Try Earthtones Girl for an amazing tutorial. So good
I can’t wait for that tee pattern!
The stripe black tee is looking awesome! Getting inspired to do something with the stripes!
I couldn't agree more re: helical knitting/stripes. Life's too short lol Also, I love the charm of handmade things looking handmade. ❤
loving the tee and awaiting the pattern release!
Thank you so much Sandra!
I look forward to hearing more about your shadow-wrapped heel experience after you complete the socks. I just started using it and I really like it. It seems pretty straightforward and is becoming a go-to when working vanilla socks. I like that the twin and triplet stitches do not leave any holes where you have to work special stitch maneuvers to close.
I totally love that thicker black strip under the arm. It’s like a secret bespoke detail that only those who know, know.
Oooo I love that! Now I feel really good about it. Thank you Heidi! 😘
The Shadow Wrap is my go-to because it is so easy to memorize! It also takes me so much less time than the heel flap and gusset.
You will get faster at the shadow wrap heel, I promise! It's my favorite heel! I first thought that the seem would be uncomfortable but it never is! I do have to knit one at a time for the heels. TAAT is still my favorite.
Taylor I am really loving your new striped version of the little black sweater. I have always loved striped shirts my whole life even though they probably aren’t as flattering on me at 64 as they were in my younger (slimmer) years I still wear stripes. It’s been fun to watch you create your own pattern from scratch. Hey this could turn into something you really enjoy. Thank you for sharing.
I always look forward to watching your podcasts. So entertaining and informative. I love that maroon sock yarn. I think it would look amazing in a little tee.
Yes, second, third, etc., the tutorial series of the shadow wrap heel by Denise! I used to be an afterthought heel kind of girl, but now I’m solidly in Camp Shadow Wrap! I’ve not cared for other short row methods and found the heel flap and gusset just too fiddly. I’d totally agree with you on Paton’s Kroy sock yarn. It’s such a workhorse that will last forever! Thanks for the episode!🤗🧶🤗
I Love the Fuchsia and Maroon dye yarn where can I get it? you were talking about it before you ended the video. those two colours are really great together.
The shadow wrapped heel is a little difficult at first but now it's basically my go to heel because it is so fast to knit. It also wears well.
The shadow wrap heel has become my favorite and basically the only one I use now. I feel like it works up so quickly and the finished sock fits my foot so nicely. Before learning it, I was doing a heel flap and gusset and I felt like that gusset took a year and a half for every sock. I'm never looking back from this new glorious short row heel.
Oh please write up a striped pattern of the The Little Striped Tee too. It is so adorable because of the stripes and I’d love to make it my first venture into stripes. Thanks for all your inspiration!
I knit my first shadow wrap heel recently. I had knit other short row heels. I've always found them all shallow, though. There is a modified shadow wrap heel I've been meaning to try....basically, you work your first wedge, then knit around the WHOLE sock for like 3 rounds, then do the other wedge. She also says it eliminates any gap at the sides.
I have tried this technique and it is so much better imo than the original. I really love that you don’t have to do triplet stitches and I find the seam inside isn’t as bulky 😁
@MidwestStitches I was doing a colorwork sock and couldn't figure out how to not interrupt the pattern, but will definitely try on other socks.
Which tutorial did you use?
@@rosepaul9681 I believe it was chilly dog's
Your new tee is looking very nice!!
Thank you Caroline!
Oh my actual goodness, I love the duo dip sock yarn. I have yet to be lucky enough to grab anything from a FFTP update but I would so love a 2 tone turquoise into navy or any gray/blue mix
Thank you Joseph! I'm so glad you love the idea of the Duo Dipped yarn and I can TOTALLY do a navy/turquoise dip. Hello! How gorgeous would that be?! ❤
Hi Taylor.
Another great podcast.
I love the black T. I cannot wait for the pattern to be released.
The duo dip is beautiful. Please do some blues. 🙏
Hx 💕🇬🇧
I'm looking forward to both the tee pattern and the dual sock yarn. Yay! Something to look forward to for summer knitting projects. Thanks!
I'm so glad you are! I'm looking forward to bringing it to y'all. ❤
I feel the shadow wrap heel is faster than the heel flap and gusset and there are no holes. This is the tutorial by Purl Together which I used to learn this method. th-cam.com/video/rxX4SKRi8mQ/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
Ohh the t-shirt is lovely. I like the sleeve length. And can’t wait to see how the yarn works up for the socks.
Oh my goodness... Love the idea on yarn! ❤ I don't care for variegated but love the interest on tonal! Duo Dipped... LOVE!
I don’t think you did anything wrong on your sock. Mine are sort of lopsided all the time but block perfectly fine… and event the ones that didn’t block look fine. As for the duration of time to do the heel… it’s a breeze for me NOW. But did take me moment the first time. But this is my go to heel. 😊
I love your podcasts! I am anxiously awaiting your pattern for the little black tee! I like the shape and sleeve length. Would love to know how to get on your list as a test knitter. 🙂
Looking forward to your finished pattern. You have put a lot of thought into how you like to wear your garments. I'm constantly modifying the sleeve lengths as I don't like them around my wrists. Your sweater will be amazing.!
Hi Tayler! That Tee is coming out so cute. Can't wait to see the finish. I'm going to have to try out that Kroy yarn for socks. Years ago I made a pair of socks for my daughter (very expensive yarn); and she put the toe out in less than a week. I swore off making another pair for over 10 years. It looks like, however, you may have found a keeper yarn that I would like to try out. Love your channel!
I tried different sock heels for years and just before the holidays came across the Earthtones Girl pattern with the shadow wrap heel. I love it and will never knit anything else. The fit is perfect. I started doing it as a cut in heel on cranked tubes and grafting it closed. It takes me about 45 min to do one heel. I am not a fast knitter. I knit at a casual enjoying what I'm doing pace.
Do you have a wind chime? I were headphones and sometimes I hear what sounds like wind chimes once in a while. It's way in the background but a cute surprise. At about 26:15. Anyways, another good video. Have a great day!
I do! I sort of love that you noticed it. It’s such a pleasant sound to me. ☺️
Vwe really needs more patterns that is striped in the written pattern. it is easyer to opt out of the strips that to put the stripes in you self.
by the way, I love the thicker line beliw the armpit too.
I love shadow wrap heel for no holes and it's super easy to read where you are and where it's time to turn direction.
I love the shadow wrap heel for my daughter's + hubby's socks. My feet prefer heel flap + gusset construction. Unfortunately, I have a family of giant feet with my size 10 the smallest. I almost
exclusively work TAT via magic loop. I don't trust myself to get the same length.
The tee is wonderful!
I am a heel flap and gusset girlie most days.
jogless stripes see Patty Lyon's book of tricks
I love you podcast. Looking fwd to the pattern release of spring tee. And how you will bind off
Great podcast thank you
I was the same with the shadow wrap heel in that the first pair of socks I used it on, it took FOREVER, but then after that practice I can do it super quick, it feels like I just get one started and then boom heel is done, so even if the second sock feels long, give it a try on a full second pair and that’s when it was magic for me
I've never tried a shadow wrap heel, but I'm totally stealing your expression about the juice being worth the squeeze! 🍋😂
I need to try that shadow wrapped heel soon! Love the tee!
I just totally love your T-shirt, and sock vibe!
Always a pleasure to see what you're up to on the needles and hearing the new techniques you're experimenting with. Thanks for sharing!
I’m so happy I found this channel!
That yarn!!! I can't wait for that shop update!
Love the longer sleeve.
Super excited for your new sock yarn! Can’t wait to see your socks from this yarn. 🧶 🎉😊
I love the shadow wrap. Use it on every pair I make. I find that they never lay completely flat - there’s a bit of biasing. I recommend Chilly Dog Knits tutorial videos.
Ooo - I love thinking about how to marry two different themes! And that yarn looks like flora and fauna!! The flora can be well, flora and the fauna can be wild things. Like what you’re holding can be rhubarb and red panda ❤ or if two teals, agave and swallowtail! 🦋 So many fun things!!! Can’t wait to see them all!!
I worked a pair of socks in the same yarn and color way. Yours look great so far ❤️
I loved the drawing of the heel thank you for that!
I also appreciate the random distraction with the hair because well I do the same.😂
Thank you for this episode..I love you little black tee!
My pleasure Lisa! Thank you for watching. ❤
I love your duo sock idea. I think it would create an interesting effect...almost a gradient-like. I can't wait to see it knitted up in a sample.
The Fish Lips Kiss Heel is nice, as is the Kura Sock formula by Miss Evil Knits.
The mini gusset on the Kura Sock was the secret for a perfect fit for my foot.
I’ve always knit my socks concurrently like this. Because I was a newbie and as I’d figure out the heel. Then I’d do the next heel while it was in by brain. Helped me figure out all the sock issues. 😊
I love the idea of the duo dip sock yarn in a workhorse Peruvian highland wool! I also enjoy making socks with Paton’s Kroy. I will be looking for your shop update!
Great episode Tayler, thank you! 🤗🤗
You are so welcome! ❤️
Enjoyed you fording the stream of consciousness! 😆 So fun that he little black is going to have have a test knit option! And I have to say.. after the FrankenKAL, socks aren’t near as scary in my head as they used to be! I’m all set to do the socks 101 tutorial when I get in the mood!
Hmmm…. I might wait for the duo stripe sock yarn! 🧶 😊❤
I love the Shadow Wrap. It goes so fast & I don't have to look up directions. But that's the beauty of socks, there are so many different ways for every different person!
I also do socks two at a time concurrently. I tried two at a time on one needle but hated the yarn management involved. My socks are usually my purse project and I find the portability aspect works better with two separate needles. It’s a preference thing. I see podcasters who absolutely love two at a time on one needle. Not me.
Your drawing made me think of the convergent divergent configuration of jet engine nozzles. This creates power and thrust.
Hi Tayler I watch splitting a skien into 2 balls but it said that is was part 1, could not find part 2. I’m assuming that it will show how to split so the socks perfectly match like yours so perfectly. Love your work here!!
I love the fish kiss heel and I work left handed then back right handed so no turning or purling
I learned the shadow wrap heal from Denise at Earthtonesgirl and it was a little slow at first but now it is so fast and my favorite heel. Give it some time.
I struggled with the Shadow Wrap heel at first. Now it's definitely my preferred heel. I adjust the depth sometimes by increasing the stitches on the back just before starting the heel, and always have at least ten center stitches for adult socks. The best fit for myself is a 12-10-12 pattern, and then I decrease those extra stitches when the heel is complete.
Great episode!
I use the the Fish lips heel all the time. Once you get used to it, it goes much faster
That 2 colour yarns is gorgeous
Thank you so much! I love how the two colors create such a pretty effect.
I love your little black tee striped version, but I think I would knit it in a solid color because it would be the 2nd sweater I’ve knit, 😢he 1st being a crop cardi; can’t wait for the pattern to become available! Also, I ❤ the duo dip yarn (I had looked at your recent shop update for sock yarn) and will definitely purchase it! I have 2 pairs of vanilla socks under my belt, just heel flap/gusset, so no opinion about the shadow wrap heel, although it sounds complicated! I’d like to try some different heels and toes and maybe some patterned socks. 🙂 Thank you so much for sharing all the things!
Your new little “black” tee is so pretty. I love the sleeve length and the thought put into the stripes.
Thank you so much! I'm really happy with it and the sleeves will be a nice option as well. I'm super tempted to knit another with long sleeves. 😬
Excellent episode, Tayler. Please write the T-shirt pattern with the stripe option- how you engineered the stripes is so chic and elevates a "classic" style to a new level. I would love to test-knit this for you-
💌
Love duo dip sock yarn! I knitted 27 pairs of socks last year using various yarns, patterns, heels, lengths and toes. That keeps one’s curiosity going. No favorites in any of those although shadow wrap can be done with a gusset for shaping.
It took me about three times to get comfortable with the shadow wrap heel and I practiced on some mini stockings which I used for Christmas 🎄 ornament gifts. There’s also a modified version of this technique in two patterns by Thais Bueno on Ravelry one of which is What The Heel Roomier which I use for my dear husband and others who have wider heels or higher instep and the need for that
For the shadow wrap heels, I personally really love them. I feel like the result is the same on both sides. More so than if I do GSR. And once you get the hang of it, it takes no time at all for me.
Oh my goodness. I've had the same experience with 2 at a time socks. I now knit them on 9" circulars since I like not having to pull the cord through the 2 socks all the time. But I don't like knitting one and then the other. I also do the "concurrent" to meet my need for the socks to match. I find it easier to make sure they have the same number of rows in the foot, rows post the heel before starting the pattern on the back of the leg, etc. Plus one sock on a needle is so much more portable for social knitting, etc. Fish Lips Kiss is my only heel. I HATE picking up stitches so no heel and gussets for me. I did try the Shadowwrap and found it more difficult with it's triple wrap and did not provide a better looking heel. So I'm back to Fish Lips.
I LOVE the striped tee, looks perfect!! Also the duo-toned yarn is interesting!!!
I find the shadow wrap heel to be so fast and efficient. No holes, great fit, easy. I love it. Heel flap and gusset is fine, my second choice. But it does take twice as long and there will always be a hole/gap that will need to be sewn shut at the end.
Oh please include the stripes in your pattern. I love the look of this tee and want to try it when it’s ready, I’ve never done stripes before. 😊
I had the same experience with the shadow wrap heel. It looks good once you’ve done it, but took me really long time to finish it. I concluded that I don’t like working it just because of how much time it takes to do it.
Just recently, I got my first sock on the needles. I didn't want to try two at a time socks right off the bat (one thing at a time!), and I didn't want to try and build a recipe when I'd never done a sock successfully before. So I chose a vanilla sock pattern that I knew the designer had created an instructional video for (really helps me the first time out to see it done), and started out on my first sock.
After ripping back the heel flap to start over, then getting to picking up stitches in the heel turn before realizing I needed to rip back again (and all the way back to the body of the sock because I wasn't sure anymore if my row count was right on the heel flap), I decided it might better for me if I worked two socks on two needles, a section at a time, so a) I'd be able to ensure that my counts matched and b) could immediately apply what I'd learned on the first sock to the 2nd sock.
All that to say, I think working up both socks on two separate needles has a lot going for it, including the many advantages mentioned for two at a time.
🌴☀️Today is catch up with Taylor’s videos day🎉 I’m gonna love this shadow wrap segment especially as I’ve made a few including the fish lips one which is, as you’ve mentioned before and I agree…quite wordy BUT great for someone new to the process but still…I love the shadow wrap and have used it more than any other. OKOK going to watch now xoxo thanks for all that you do. See you on patreon☀️🌴
EDIT: and gurrrrrl the yarn used on those socks YUM!!!!
Enjoy your catch-up time my friend.
❤️❤️❤️
I use the Patons kroy sock yarn #1(75% wool 25%nylon) held together with 100% cotton #3(k&c yarn brand from Joanne's) to make lots of other things. Right now I'm making a hooded cowl and the color variation between the two is just beautiful. The kroy is a brown rose marl and then cream for the other cotton yarn. It's got ne thinking of making a sweater with it..😅
The portrait happily reminds me of Vemeer's work.
That's a HUGE compliment. Thank you. ❤️
Try the earthtonesgirl shadow wrap heel, very easy.
I made my husband short socks with patons kroy. I used the tomato heel because his feet are huge. I did 3 wedges. Only thing the ankle was slightly bunchy. Not sure why. Size 14. Co 80 sts.
One thing that I do when following patterns in rows or rounds as a count (20" or something) is I write out the rows and what happens in them. I will pre plan the row if it requires increases or decreases and put stitch markers where they need to be. I can't do it without them. Just wanted to put this out there as I haven't seen anyone talk about it.
Please, please write the t-shirt pattern with the stripes. I would make it so many colour combinations. it’s easy enough to just omit the stripes if you want to make it in plain colour.
I have knit a few socks with the shadow wrap heel, but I don’t love the fit. I like knitting on dpns and doing a heel flap, heel turn and gusset. Always a great fit for me. My second favorite heel is the Fish Lips Kiss heel. Shadow wrap heels always look wonky until they’re blocked.
You might try Mina Philipp’s short row heel with mini heel flap adjustment as another fit option? I haven’t done it yet but Earthtones Girl recommended it if you have short row fit issues.
