I hate it when I'm scrolling down through my news feed and see a post from ten+ days ago, that has appeared on my news feed several times before, often things I've already liked, so the algorithm should know I've seen it before and not bother showing it again

I keep dropping friends in the hope that the reason I'm missing posts in Most Recent is that I simply have too many friends. I don't mind sponsored content and even ads in my newsfeed, but I just want to see everything my friends post in the order in which they posted it. Inserting some crap in between is fine, but I've missed out on so much stuff because Facebook decided to not tell me that my friends were doing something cool near me until the next day or later that week. Or I'll post a time-sensitive question that nobody sees for a day or two.

I've got 300+ friends and see the same 13 people over and over again. Even 5 day old dead posts
I even changed the newsfeed settings to most recent with no difference.
I wish it worked more like forum boards and put the active and recent posts upfront regardless of who or content.

I've been searching and searching, and all I want to know is precisely how Facebook's abjectly terrible algorithm based newsfeed saves them money over simply publishing posts as they are posted by users, like they did before they went public. I understand using an algorithm for sponsored posts and ads, but I can't for the life of me figure out how or why throwing your friend's and family's posts willy-nilly throughout your newsfeed benefits Facebook or its users.
