With Twitter’s new emoji tracking tool, advertisers can track how and when users post emojis and determine users’ emotional state. Depending on those feelings, they can deliver ads that best match their emotions at that time.
Advertisers say that this will allow them to deliver more relevant ads, but there are opposite concerns about consumer privacy. Watch this video to learn how advertisers are using this tool and how it changes the ads users see on Twitter.

So, I'm a person who does not use emojis. At all. Ever. I find that if you cannot express yourself in words, then what you have to express isn't worth reading. But I don't just avoid using emojis myself. I also use an app on my phone and an extension in my browser to block all emojis from appearing on the devices I use. On my phone, I see a black box where an emoji appears. Nothing else. On my PC browser, I see nothing at all. No black box, no emoji, not even a blank space where the emoji is supposed to go. It does make for some people's comments to come across as illiterate mumbo jumbo, but if they are using any emojis, they might as well be illiterate.
I have to wonder how the advertiser's algorithm would work (or not work) on me?

It's more like they are testing such information tracking by using the "hip young kids" method, blatant initially would allow them to easily see if it works. It would be less "let's get the kids in" once the system is proving it's effects, then it just gets scarily subtle

i wonder how people like me that use emojis almost exclusively ironically (the only ones i ever use seriously are the hearts, but i also use them ironically so it's probably even harder to tell) affect these algorithms? i doubt they can detect irony or sarcasm because often people satirizing something are using the same key terms as what they are satirizing.

I'm very skeptical of the effectiveness of targeted ads. I mostly get them for products i already use or own. I think the biggest sham is the fact that marketing companies persuaded other corporations that this is very effective.

Why tho?
I mean, the only reason you are being tracked is so companies can give you ads. You agreed to being tracked. Or maybe you didn't, because on most sites you can stop companies from tracking you.

This is why I run any kind of ad filtering I can. I can safely say that I am not a regular consumer of advertising.
Emojis- now "the enemy of the people"
The mass targeting and profiling of users in such personal and intrusive ways (and without the user understanding it at all) is disgusting and an ethical injustice. At the very least users should be clearly signposted how their ads or content has been chosen for them, and in reality such intrusive methods shouldn't be used at all.
I understand it from a business perspective but from an ethical standpoint it's pretty poor

I use emojis regularly in iMessages with my wife and daughter, but somehow I trust Apple to safeguard my overall messages more than I do either Facebook or Twitter. In any case, I believe emotions have a complexity that may not be fully, or even accurately, captured by emojis we use. So I wonder how well emoji campaigns are working out for advertisers: are they getting a lift in their advertising impact or return? More importantly how well do they really understand the relationship between emotions and (buying) behavior, especially when other factors like cognition and personality play into our behavior as well?
