    Great test! I feel like another good starting point would be when your foot touches the pedal, since some cars have a delay between when you touch the pedal and when the car starts moving. That should be accounted for. Maybe that's where the 5.2 sec number comes from.

    I was thinking maybe the difference could be the tires wearing in. When you get tires new they should be flat and even, but on different vehicles the camber can be slightly different or slightly different on each vehicle but still within "limits". Over time your tires have worn in to more closely match the settings on your car and are giving a slightly better grip. Again this would be a small difference, but then your improvements are slight.

  • @brantwedel

    Nice! Thinking about this method, it's 60hz instead of 10hz, and if you set up a marker at start and 1/4 mile, and go frame by frame, you can get more accurate than a draggy!!

    My Model 3 LR is about 2 to 3 km/h off. This is based on GPS and those neighbourhood flashing speed signs. So worse case scenario it's about 1.8 MPH off.

  • @5252085
    @5252085 5 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    I liked the video, but i think it is flawed. Reason being is that the displayed 60mph is not truly 60mph.
    You need the VBox because it's based off of GPS.
    Manufacturers set various speed offsets to their vehicles. Just look at TeslaBjorn's video's. He does his 90km/hr tests, but the Model 3 needs to be at 94km/hr to truly be at 90.
    Like i said.. i enjoyed the video. But the results are likely incorrect.

    • @pepstein
      @pepstein 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dkdanis1340 I highly doubt that there's any law requiring a 5 MPH offset. In my experience speedometers read just slightly higher than actual speed. In Bjorn's tests the difference is usually less than 5 km/h, which is only about 3 MPH.
      But I agree that you really need a vbox or a drag strip to measure 0-60 times accurately.

    • @ingmu
      @ingmu 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No need VBox actually. Only need GPS of cell phone.

    I appreciate your continued work informing us of our Model 3s. A couple of questions occurred to me on this test. Perhaps you can respond. Yes, from the video the surface looks flat. But we all know of circumstances (particularly when I am biking) where that is not exactly true. So I am wondering if you considered running the test over the same markers but in the opposite direction? Further, it may be nanoseconds different, but the crown of the road may also induce a small amount of tire friction. Did you consider running the test straddling the center? I am sure your results are, in gross terms, accurate. These questions are meant as possible refinements next time.

    • @i1Tesla
      @i1Tesla  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From the first test I did many months ago the GPS data shoed a 1% decline. That is why I went back to the same spot to do this test. That way the 1% grade would not be a factor.

    • @mrobertcarr
      @mrobertcarr 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      For practical purposes, your test is valid. I would just point out that GPS elevation accuracy is generally felt to be about + or - 10 meters. Googling this will disclose all kinds of complicated formulas as to how GPS approximates elevation (and elevation changes). There is even an app for that. I mention this, not for you. Your test is fine. But others on the thread may be interested in digging deeper. Again, thanks for the information. Now I have a reference point to tell my skeptical friends about the impressive acceleration of the Model 3.@@i1Tesla

    • @aussie2uGA
      @aussie2uGA 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Easy. From inception, the rear was officially 5.1, the dual 4.5, and the performance was 3.5. In the case of the Model S, ordering a dual motor made the car significantly quicker AND better efficiency. This is what was expected from the Model 3.
      If we now find the lighter rear drive is uncorked to 4.5, the performance has been juiced down to 3.3 seconds, it’s harder to justify a dual motor for “performance”. You’re really now just buying it for AWD. My point was that I don’t see Tesla allowing the dual motor to get to 4.0 for instance, as many performance buyers may not pay the premium. Tesla is smart to allow at least a one second difference and pocket the extra profit.

    I would not expect them to slow the cars except if a wear issue showed up. And I don't think the RWD models have much more in them.
    But they could easily make a fast RWD version and should. Easily below 3 seconds. John Wayland made a 1970s datsun go under 2 seconds with RWD and forklift motors. Tesla is way too focused on 4WD and I think it's a crying shame. It's heavier, more complex, steals frunk room, potentially less efficient, it's bullshit. And then he whines he can't build it cheaper. Well maybe the glassroof and extra drivetrain and whatever else redundant junk is in the car makes it hard to lower the price.
