All of the 3.0 v6's were recalled. I bought a 1991 Toyota pickup 4x4 with the 3.0 and got a notice in the mail that they would cover the head problem up to 100,000 miles. My head gasket blew and warped the head at 98,000 miles. Toyota replaced everything and never had a problem after that. When I traded it in, the pickup had 295,000 miles on it and the engine still ran great.

Scotty, I lived in an '84 Toyota Dolphin RV for about 2 years, even through a winter and harsh winds. I loved that RV and nearly traded straight across my '89 Fleetwood Southwind 28ft for another one of these Toyotas. Mine had the 22R engine and it was a 4 speed. It had get up and go with just enough power to climb long hills at 55MPH. Sadly, a woman drove into the back of it while I was at an intersection awaiting a green light. She drove into the back of me at 40MHP and totalled my RV. Many years later, Geico still owes me $3,500.

I worked with one of the owners of Sunrader around 15 years ago, and heard the whole horrid story of how the axle recalls started because of aftermarket dual wheels failing. Really sad, Toyota and Sunrader didn't do anything wrong, and this guy went from making $250k a year making a good product, with a 30 year company, to losing everything and working as a tech at an rv shop, before he eventually bought another rv business and did ok. He finally retired about 10 years ago I think.

I consider it a damn shame that Toyota decided to bow out of producing motorhome chassis. I'm sure they had their problems with rear axles and V6 engines. But once they were recalled and fixed, they had an awesome truck. I think Toyota should've continued with it, well into the Tacoma production. For a vehicle like this, I would've preferred a 2.4 litre turbo diesel engine, rather than the 3.0 litre V6 engine. Sadly, the turbo diesel was never available in large numbers in the USA. Emissions be damned, I would've preferred better fuel economy and better uphill climbing.

We LOVED our 1987 Sunrader, which we purchased in 1987 and wished we had never traded it in on a larger 28' Tioga Fleetwood, but our family was literally outgrowing the smaller Sunrader... :>( Now that our kids are all grown and have kids of their own, we'd love to have another NEW Sunrader for just the wife and I... We had the 4cyl model with dual wheels in the back w/air bag's... EVERYTHING worked perfectly and we made a number of trips with it including our 'Retirement' trip down to Wash. DC, up into Canada and all the way across the U.S. including numerous stops in the South, Midwest, Yellowstone, Custer's Mem., Mt. Rushmore, and a multitude of wonderful, fascinating stops along the way plus traveling Highway 1 from Wash. St. to SanDiego, CA!!! ALL w/o a glitch except we had to 'gear down' going over the higher MT. passes as we were fully loaded with 2 adults, 4 kids, a dog and ALL of our gear!!! WONDERFUL TRIP AND WONDERFUL VEHICLE!!! WISH Toyota or some other mfg. would make another small RV like this once again!!! They certainly would have at least ONE buyer!!! ;>) Thanks sooo much for the video of your Sunrader as it brought back many, many wonderful memories!!!
