It's amazing how many of these Toyota campers are still running around. A testament to the durability of the 22R and the transmission behind it. That's a lot of weight to lug around.
I bought a 17’ Sunrader with only 52k miles about 7 years ago for $1200. It had the rare 5 speed factory manual. I replaced the fake duallys with a one ton rear axle. Gutted the interior. Desmogged it and replaced factory carb with a new Weber. Unbelievable how much more power it had! Repainted the exterior myself and then had to sell it before finishing the interior. Got $10,000 for it with the interior unfinished but was really sad to have to let it go.
@@ChuckCassadyYT I was faced with doing a rebuild too. I did a lot of research before deciding to rebuild or desmog and replace with the Weber carb. I am NOT a mechanic but there’s a forum thread that step by step walks you through the process. Seriously, I was blown away at how much more power my Sunrader had, and especially going up hills. If you desmog, (which you should cuz all that smog crap doesn’t work anyway), it’s unreal how spacious it will be under the hood (like working on a 60’s American 6 cylinder with all the room you’ll have!). Also, I sold the original Aisin carb plus a big box of the old smog crap on Craigslist and it just about paid for all the new parts. If I ever buy another Toyota 22R, would I do it again? Absolutely!
My favorite travelling memories as a kids are from laying in the over the cab bed of our motorhome. It felt like we were flying. Your Toyota camper actually has everything that everyone is trying to put in a van but can't...bath, fixed bed and the u-shaped seating. Also...paint the rear wheels black like the front.
You are so right. This economical, mini cruiser has everything people are trying to put in a van, but can't. The shower stall is small, so I sit on a plastic stool and that works just fine. The best part is full standing room to walk around and and use the full kitchen that produdes some really great meals. Sitting in most vans in the rain is just miserable and cramped. Sitting in the u-shaped dinette with an espresso drink in the morning with the full view all around is just plain heaven. Enjoy every mile and every smile.
Nice! Very cute. You're a natural... Funny! I had a Toyota Dolphin named Flipper (all orig with rear dinette) and drove her full time around the country (25,000 miles) for three and a half years. Then I stupidly sold her. Big regret. Thx for the video.
Grew up in a 1971 Econo Van, dad came back from Nam, bought the van, painted it, fixed up the inside and off to many travels throughout the west & Mexico. Older restored rigs are special!
It's amazing how this classic motorhome has a better floor plan than any camper van on the market today. Can you please tell me the dimensions of the overhead sleeping area, and also the sleeping area of the dinette? Have you had any guests sleep in the dinette area? How comfortable is it? Also, is the truck a 4x4?
Last month I bought a 1989 Toyota dolphin. It is a six-cylinder automatic. The inside was redone the engine was rebuilt 2006. All the paperwork was with it the manuals everything I’ve checked so far works. It’s getting the brakes done now. It passed the safety inspection, It’s not perfect condition, but what is at 35 years old? I don’t have the dinette in the back. Mines all bathroom back there. But the one piece shower, which is great. It’s a different manufacturer, if it doesn’t work out for me, I can sell it. I had to make up my mind because there were people waiting to see it. But I knew I could resell it if I decided I didn’t want to travel in it. I really wanted a van that was somewhat built out, but then I saw this on craigslist. Been a long time since I drove my late husband’s truck, which is the closest I’ve come to driving a 20 foot vehicle and I purchased a back up camera. I’ll go to a parking lot and get used to it.😅 it’s so cute and I love the windows in them, they’re big. The closet behind the toilet is huge. And most important it’s got the 1 ton Dooley axle. I’d like to find someone like you to make some changes in mine. Like the lagun table mount, that’s something I wanted in a van. I gave up the idea of a van two years ago, then I seen this Dolphin on craigslist, then went 50 miles to look at it.
Looked at a New Dolphin built on Toyota in 1993 out in Las Vegas. It had the larger rear bath but a cramped side dinette. I am 6’4”. No problem driving ot standing. These were nice on flat highways.
I had a flatbed version of this, it was an old motorhome that we turned into a flatbed. It towed close to 6k lbs and did great. I was still able to brake fine also w downshifting etc. Slow yes, but I was able to get around town. I wouldnt try towing that load on the highway though lol.
🤣🤣🤣 That's it. Its all downhill from here for me today. The bucket seat in the 3rd windshield episode-and now 2:47 "HAZZAARDDS" ... I swear I am going to make bus life or box truck life happen, and I hope to meet some of you guys. Certainly my kind of people. 🤙
Those old Toyotas are scarce as honest politicians. You either got very very lucky (which you deserve) or you burnt the stump and sifted the ashes to dig up this old treasure I'm SICK with jealousy.
I love it I think that's a great little motorhome I sure like to have one of those sunrader and go traveling myself now I'm retired just looks like a whole lot of fun better than being a couch potato sitting in a apartment
They call that a cab over camper. Used my ‘92 GMC extended cab and an 8 1/2 ft cab over w/ wet bath for three trips across the US (DC-CA-DC-CA) from 92-98 in the military. Towed a Geo Storm on first two and a 4 door S-10 Blazer on the last one. A friend has a 19’ Dolphin. He calls it his rolls canardly…. Can hardly roll up a hill. But he loves the 19mpg.
The best? IDK I'm pretty partial to my 98 Xplorer. It's kind of like taking a girl to the dance, you danced with the girl you brought. I've used the heck out of the old girl and we've had a few tough times' like when she lost her dual wheels going down the road, but she's easy to fix and we've also made some great memories. Old rigs for the win.
My sweet dance partner is an '84 Nissan mini motorhome. Almost identical to the Toyota, but more horsepower in the old Z-engine with a 5-spd. Modern rigs don't impress me at all.
Sure, the shag carpeting is wonderful and adds a real touch of class, but I couldn't help but notice a few (sizable) gaps around the door. Hope the AZ nights don't get too cold!
Sitting in my 1984 Chevy Dolphin while Im watching this. 21 degrees, heater going, solar charging, breakfast will be up in a minute to help quench the beers i had last night from my fridge. MmmmMmm
I just bought 89 last month, it’s not a four-cylinder, it’s a six cylinder. It’s coming back tomorrow from getting its brakes done. Time to paint the inside
I’ve been planning to buy this ‘85 NISSAN sunrader in a couple weeks (guy won’t be back in town til then) because it’s a great price, $3,000 OBO, but people have been telling me not to do it because the parts for it will be too hard to find. Is this true? ;( someone help. I think it’s so cute and exactly what im looking for!
It's close! The Chinook is way smaller with a pop top so less space but more nimble. I prefer the sunrader for full timing but mostly I just love old toyotas
I cannot process how that anemic little engine can support or move that weight, nor how the front wheels even stay on the ground because the weight looks like it's 70/30 on the back half...
I swear shag carpet was an actual fungus in the 70's ....would turn up on the daftest of places (up the side bath panel😳) but be considered luxurious 😂
Hey Chuck, what brand diesel heater do you normally install in your rigs? Our diesel heater keeps having problems intermittently and we're wondering if there is a better option...
Hahaha you're right. It's important to set expectations low before you blow everyone away with its awesomeness. I'm a toyota person through and through
Actually, most of the ranges were stainless or tan, fridges mostly had wood-grain look. No complaints about appliances that are 40 yrs old and still work just fine.
The - Why is there "quotes"? - on the clock comment cracked me up. I hope he was kidding. I know that analog clocks confuse the younger generations that grew up in a mostly digital clock era but it can't be that bad...can it?

This warms my heart! Best presenter ever put a smile on my face! You know... kids...
Hahaha yes! Thank you so much!
Any RV based on a Toyota truck is a 10/10
Old rigs have so much character! You have a cool rig with an awesome layout! 😃 And nice wood look 😍
Thank you!!
Yes, the wood panels have a warm, classic look- too often they are painted all white to make it "modern" but soulless.
Nice! Very cute. You're a natural... Funny! I had a Toyota Dolphin named Flipper (all orig with rear dinette) and drove her full time around the country (25,000 miles) for three and a half years. Then I stupidly sold her. Big regret. Thx for the video.
So cool!
Nice video Chuck. I’ve been a big fan of shag carpet ever since I converted a 1966 Ford Econoline laundry van back in 1974. Long live van life!
Absolutely!!!
I, too, love the shag carpeting, but I use clear vinyl floor runners to cover it during wet, muddy seasons.
Grew up in a 1971 Econo Van, dad came back from Nam, bought the van, painted it, fixed up the inside and off to many travels throughout the west & Mexico. Older restored rigs are special!
This video brings back so many memories of my dad's 1979 Mazda b2000 pickup with a viking pop-up in bed camper. Traveled around north America in that.
My dad had a b2000 too!
It's amazing how this classic motorhome has a better floor plan than any camper van on the market today.
Can you please tell me the dimensions of the overhead sleeping area, and also the sleeping area of the dinette? Have you had any guests sleep in the dinette area? How comfortable is it?

I would love to see one of these race an air cooled Westy up a mountain pass. From the seat of my bicycle. Race is on!
Let's go!
Lol. Yup
Imagine my shock to run into this video searching for retrofitting for my Toyota Odyssey!

Had a Dolphin. The truck was a lemon, hated it and lost money on it. It was a pig to drive too, so slow and dangerous.
Looked at a New Dolphin built on Toyota in 1993 out in Las Vegas. It had the larger rear bath but a cramped side dinette.
I am 6’4”. No problem driving ot standing.
These were nice on flat highways.
Thats the KEY! I had a few 22r ...they are great in a tiny truck CANT imagine on many roads you could use 5th gear. ...gear bound.
Definitely on my list. I’d love to pick up a sunrader but all I keep finding is the larger dolphins.
I had a flatbed version of this, it was an old motorhome that we turned into a flatbed. It towed close to 6k lbs and did great. I was still able to brake fine also w downshifting etc. Slow yes, but I was able to get around town. I wouldnt try towing that load on the highway though lol.

Carrying that Toyota thing out. So cool.
😂all the tools you need to keep a 40yo Rv on the road.

Now we can vouch for you! These Toyotas are the best! Once all the repairs and renovations are done haha😅 Cheers!
Exactly!!
Those old Toyotas are scarce as honest politicians. You either got very very lucky (which you deserve) or you burnt the stump and sifted the ashes to dig up this old treasure
I'm SICK with jealousy.
I agree, it took me a couple years to find this one (it's actually my second little sunrader)
Be patient, there are still a lot of these little classics out there. Finding a good original, un"remuddled" one takes time.
I love it I think that's a great little motorhome I sure like to have one of those sunrader and go traveling myself now I'm retired just looks like a whole lot of fun better than being a couch potato sitting in a apartment
Nice rig! Im still driving my 35 year old Toyota pickup truck.
I'm still driving my Toyota 4x4 1990!
Only thing better than an 18' Sunrader is a 21'+ Sunrader. Whatever rig I get must have a rear-view dinette, ideally wrap-around.
Thats your best video ever
Thank you! I agree
I always enjoy your intro music to your videos.
Thank you!
Love it. You’re hilarious to watch. 😂
I would buy this in a heart beat
What would make this design close to perfect (IMO), would be to do this on an extended cab full-sized truck.
Yes!
They call that a cab over camper.

I enjoy your personality.
Thanks for the videos.
Thanks for watching!
Boots with shorts?!!! 🤣🤣 love it!! ❤️
Always!
shag carpet... brings back memories of my 1972 VW bug, yes, i installed shag carpet on the dashboard... what's not to like about that ?
Nothing not to like
Everything to love
One of your best videos man.
I appreciate that!
Love it! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
My only question is. Is that coffee in the cup?
This video is gospel ❤
How cute! This would be good for me, i am short.. Hey i dig your boots.
Marie from Denver. ☺
Glad you like them!
This is awesome. But I have a 72 Caddy Coupe de Ville that's actually 2 feet longer than this thing! Hmmmm.....conversion? Hmmmmmmm.
this is awesome

Been down to -4 in this!!
@@ChuckCassadyYTplease tell me more about the underneath propane heater!! Not dangerous?
I have owned 2 21 ft SRs. Best Toyhouse out there. Leak/rot proof. Much more robust that squeaky stick'n'staple rigs.
agreed! a totally different and awesome animal
OMG I want one now, Please find me one Chuck and come to Arkansas, absolutely loved the video : )
Hahah I know! They're so awesome

Pretty cool but how long does it take 💩 to compost?sweet rig
I'd like to know about that, too!
Have you flat towed any secondary vehicle?
with the sunrader? no way no way lol
I cannot process how that anemic little engine can support or move that weight, nor how the front wheels even stay on the ground because the weight looks like it's 70/30 on the back half...
That front does tend to get a bit light lol
I swear shag carpet was an actual fungus in the 70's ....would turn up on the daftest of places (up the side bath panel😳) but be considered luxurious 😂
Hahahahahaha
When I step out of the little shower stall in my '84 mini, I step out on shag carpeting- yes, a little strange, but actually nice, even luxurious.
All that shag made for good noise reduction too!
Are drunk RV tours a genre?
Beautiful. What kind of gas mileage are you getting in that baby?
15 pretty solidly
