Wow!! You helped me fix my mower. The switch that the brake pushes in was off the bracket. I didn’t know it had that switch till I saw your video. Thank you!!
I unplugged and repluged everything, and moved and cleaned the stuff... my mower had went from fine to dead... the this youtube video got it working again! Thank you very much.
quick tip from a JD tech: while trouble shooting or in general you can start your lawnmower with no weight on the seat as long as the parking brake is engaged. helps when checking multiple safety and power points throughout the ignition system.
@@DIYJIM you’re welcome, keep up the videos. very informative for the common consumer that may not have read their manual or aren’t as mechanically inclined 👍🏼👏👏👏
Yep, as long as the blades are disengaged and the parking brake is engaged, it's not necessary to push on the brake pedal ... or even be seated on the machine.
Thank you, thank you , Thank You!!! Never in a million years would I have known to check the break safety connection. Mine was loaded with gunk and I got no start. After cleaning it, it started like a charm😁 I also checked every part you showed in the video. Saved me $hundreds. May God continue to bless you and use you to bless others! Thanks Calvin
My lawn tractor, pretty much just like yours, was running fine today. Stopped in the middle of the yard to do something, hopped back on to start it, and it just clicked. Battery had plenty of juice. Watched your video, simply jiggled every electrical connection you mentioned and made sure it was tight, and later it started. I still don’t know which one was loose, but you helped get something reconnected and ultimately helped the engine start. Thank you very much!
You helped me SO MUCH. I pulled the fuse, it looked fine but I held it up to the light and there was a SMALL hairline crack. Sure enough, that did the trick. Thank you.
Thanks for the great video Jim ! After mowing my front yard this weekend, my 19 yo JD L110 wouldn't start when I started to mow the backyard, found your video and did the checks you suggested and it was my fuse and the brake safety switch had dislodged out of the bracket. Put in a new fuse and put the switch back in and was good to go !!
I’m so thankful that I found you! I have been working on my John Deere 120 so has my nephew he got it started but it would not start again%. I watch this video last night went out this morning cleaned the safety switch that goes to the clutch (I think) and first try it started right up! I was able to mow everything. So thank you thank you thank you!
Thanx- checked fuse-ok, checked battery-ok then checked the springs under the seat-they looked good but I wiped them off and it started right up!. thanx againJim.

Wow, thank you. As an older single woman trouble-shooting my "crank but won't start" JD L120, this video gives me step by step things to check. I like your delivery, too. Just so dang clear, and good video technique to show what we're supposed to look for. Appreciate it, man.
Ditto for me. This guy gets right to each point. I took this video into the garage and went through the rig one by one. I think the problem is the fuel filter that appears never to have been changed. If changing that doesn’t do it this video helps me believe I’m up for the task to continue. In fact, cleaning things as I’m going through and learning each system is fun. So when I’m finished this old thing will be humming again. Hi it’s just me making a mechanical repair. Hooray!

Thank you for this straightforward video. Bc of it, I figured out my L110 had a blown fuse. I had already replaced the battery solenoid and spark plug, but this video got me thinking about the fuse. Much appreciated!
One more thing. I kept blowing the fuse and again YOU had the answer for me. Checked the head lamp harnessing and found melted plastic and bare wire. I removed the wiring because I really don't mow at night! Ha ha. Thanks again! No more problems.
I have a Sabre (farmed-out to Scott(?)) branded as John Deere. I’m concerned that it might be my brake safety switch. Thanks for showing that part to us!
Thank you for posting your DIY videos. This particular video has helped me to eliminate all the possibilities to why my mower wasn't turning over at all. However, the problem that I found wasn't in any videos that I have found, it turned out to be a grounded wire connected to the lights. Apparently, while opening the hood, the wire harness leading to the lights had become impinged in the latch exposing bare wires, resulting in a ground. Even though your video didn't cover this possibility, it did help me to solve my problem.
My LT 150 was dead. The mower engagement lever also has a safety switch. It’s on the firewall near the back of the battery. It’s connected to another small lever that 3:05 activates and depresses the safety switch the mower lever is pulled down to activate the mower. The swivel lever has a set screw in it. It was missing. No go. I used my C clamp to finish my mowing then went to the JD store for a new replace lever.
Owned my John deer for 5 years. Done the oil changes and all. After every winter I have a hard time starting it. I’m sitting on it with the break on, not pushed in. This year I flooded my engine. So I you tube things you can do to help start it. For 5 years I have not been pressing in the break while starting. So I went back out there and did that. It started on the first try 🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️ Thanks to this video for helping me out. When I bought the machine they never told me to do that when starting. God bless
I really appreciate your video. I have a JD S120 that ran like a charm until this past August. It started acting up and wouldn't run for anything, spitting and sputtering and even was hard to start. I took it into a shop and $85 later they told me it ran great. I took it home and about a week later it was back to where it was before. I didn't plan to take it back to them so I read online where I should check the air filter and the plugs. I replaced all three and it ran great FOR ABOUT A MONTH! I was ready go buy a new fuel pump when I ran across your video. Before I blew those ports out back by the fill cap I tried to start it again. The engine would turn over but it wouldn't stay running even if I help the throttle bar up as far as it would go. So I blew out those two ports in the back then got on the mower and tried to start it again. It kicked off nd even in low throttle it stayed running! So I took it out and engaged the blades and it styed running even when I lowered the throttle. I also don't why it fixed it but it doesn't matter because it saved me some time and money because the next stop was another repair shop. Now it sits in my garage waiting for Spring when I mow again! I live in SE Pa. and the grass isn't growing right now. Thank you very much and have a wonderful Christmas.
I've checked a few of these and there are some that I haven't. I'm hoping it will be one of them and I won't have to go further than that. This is the kind of video I've been looking for. Thanks.
Thanks. One thing to add would be moisture. Apparently after going through each thing you mentioned, it was moisture in the engine from all the rain, humidity and dew we’ve been having in my area. Once it dried out it fired up on the first turn, whereas it was starting up, but not turning over until it dried out.
Thank you so much for this video. I own the same mower and love that as a woman this mower is so user friendly. I’ve changed just about everything on this mower and it’s nice to have videos like this to learn more and always have it as a reference. Pulled my battery out and currently charging it. Was completely dead. However we have had this mower since 2017. We shall wait and see.
Brake pedal switch mechanism was disconnected from it's bracket. Once re-positioned brake pedal switch into it's bracket, cranked right up. I would have never found this it not for your helpful video. BIG thanks.
@@DIYJIM Not a problem. Turns out it was the PTO switch thinking it was on. Did the screwdriver while holding the key to start over the solenoids bolt ends that the cables connect to and it starts sparks flying. One side had 12+ volts with multimeter (one on negative battery and the other on one of the bolt ends of the solenoid and the other was nothing. So went to check the three safety switches (Seat, PTO and brake), luckily started with the PTO. While holding the key and the SLIGHTEST touch to move the PTO switch, it would start. Hopefully a new switch will seat tightly/snuggly (D140). Thought I'd share, hope it's useful!
Great video. The one thing I didn’t know about is the fuse you pointed out. That fuse caught my eye when I was going to replace my battery. I had know idea it was there until that moment. Now I know to check it if the engine will not turn over.
Well you overlooked the pto engagement switch, they become miss-aligned or otherwise out of position , causing no start condition when pto lever is disengaged . Dont know what the fix is yet , still working on it . Other wise you did a good job covering the subject. Thank you for sharing .
Just above the fuel filter he pointed out, is the fuel pump. It has 3 ports on it that the hoses connect to. That could also be clogged. Plenty of videos to show you how to check how the fuel gets pulled from the gas tank to the engine and whether your filter or pump is clogged. Just simple stuff to check. It can get more involved with the carburetor/jetting/float bowl if everything else is flowing properly.
Jim, so glad I've come across your channel. My D110 has been working great until this past week. It simply shut down while I was mowing, and would not restart. I let it sit for a while and it started right up and runs strong, but dies again within a couple minutes. Repeated this multiple times. Starts quick, runs well and dies. Everything you've shown in this video seems not to apply.
Good video Jim. I tried all those things but it still would not start. I opened up the air filter box and sprayed carb cleaner down the hole and still nothing. So I decided to see if fuel was reaching the carb so I disconnected the gas line at the carb and turned over the engine to see if gas would squirt out. And guess what, it did, and not only that but the darn thing started, with me holding on to the gas line. After that I plugged it back in and it started again. I'm not sure why but it works now.
Did you run out of gas? Just had this happen on my Case diesel tractor. Running out of diesel air locked the fuel injector and the lines to each injector had to be bleed (similar to what you did) to get the air out. Not sure if this can happen on these tractors but what you describe sounds very similar.
@@philipgransewicz160 No I did not.Maybe it was just coincidental. The next day it wouldn't start. I replaced the plug and air filter, put more gas in the tank and still would not start. I took out the plug and it was wet, dried it out, waited a bit then it finally did start. Maybe I'm leaking too much oil in cylinder.
Nice video, I learned a number of things. My new (3 months) S120 was fine. I was mowing and stopped, emptied the bags and now it will not start. I turn the key and nothing. Checked all the stuff, the lights and all come on, it shows the gas is full, but I turn the key and nothing. Had to push it back to the shop (taking a few rests along the way). Guess I will be calling John Deer.
Thank you sir . - nice instruction- on some kohler engines you don’t thread in the dipstick to check the oil level , on a Briggs if it has too much oil it can blow a cloud of blue smoke when you start it - if the mower has an electric clutch for the more deck it won’t start if it is pulled out
Good videos. Should the fuel filter be showing full while in use? Or partially full okay? I was having issues with earwigs in the empty tank over the winter getting stuck in the fuel intake tube. Noticed the partial full filter while troubleshooting. Thx.
Hello. I have a x125 series. Videos are very easy to comprehend. Thank you. Need to do some work on it. Can you recommend a online store I can purchase original parts? Thank you once more.
I struggled to get my JD LA145 started. Turns out that the valves weren't set right. Once I straightened them out it now starts every time. Good list of things to check first.
Thanks Jim for the troubleshooting, I have an S100 (2022) I went through all of the steps, there also seems to be a sensor on the Forward/Reverse pedals , if it is stuck in 'reverse' mode it will not start
Jim - Wonderful guidance. I did every step you recommended, except fuel filter (which looks clean from outside). Still nothing. Meter shows battery charged (hope I did it right) and lights turn on. Should I take batter out and get tested at NAPA? How would I know if a switch is bad/dead, without replacing all one-by-one (seat, break)? How would I know if spark plug is bad?
Thanks for watch sorry it did not help you. Really hard to explain in a message how to check everything. I would use a bypass wire in the switches to see if it starts when you bypass one at a time.
Thanks for the tips. I was able to get my lawn mower going again after checking a few of these things. I think it had too much dust etc. in the switch for the clutch. Thanks!!
Thanks for the video. When I removed the fuel filter no fuel came out of the fuel line. When I removed the gas cap, fuel came gushing out of line. So probably a blockage. And Last year engine would not start because my head gasket leak was putting too much oil in cylinder and fouling up the spark plug.
I have one, and it doesn’t have a saftey for low oil. The filter on mine was loose and rode it a couple of times with zero oil in it. Good think I noticed before it got bad
Hey Jim can you help my John Deere isn’t idling correctly or missing I have to run it with the chock about 3/4 up and the minute I try to put the blades on it stalls. Any information would be appreciated and thank you for your time
So I noticed that after I turned my mower off, it sounded like a clicking or vibrating noise coming from the engine. I wiggled the starter cable and it stopped. Now I'm trying to start it back and it acts as if it's dead. The battery isn't dead and my fuse is good. I'm wondering if it's something to do with the starter.
The electrical connection on the solenoid on mine doesn’t fit tight. My front yard has a few bumps so mowing my lawn is great until I hit a few of those bumps and it comes loose just enough to make it stall.
thank you so much… i just seen the fuse was blown. i just assumed it was for the lights or something ha. still didn’t know it was blown but I do now Ty .… can honestly say you are the first you tube video IVE EVER kept watching after i figured out the issue , and i did immediately or I’m sure this is it . let’s hope it’s all that’s wrong . going to go get a fuse. I’ll be back ..
@@DIYJIM 4 fuses have blown. why 4, bc im in an unincorporated lil town far from the stores and that’s all i had gotten 😂. no but fr it cranked on the 3rd fuse and sounded great like the norm as usual. no cutting out or anything odd at all . i let it run a couple min and it was fine . never engaged it or anything . i got down to let my hubs mow so I shut it down completely and properly ya know . when he went to crank it . pop, that one blew. keep in mind I’m hearing them pop. the actual fuse blowing . just the normal i reckon on that. but yea , went ahead and put the last one in since i JUST had to see that it would pop it again 🤦🏻♀️. and it did . but yea… Is their some wires criss crossing or what’s causing these fuses to blow do u know ? Ty so much ….
After 3 days and $50 spent 4 nothing, i found that my blade engagement switch was bad..under the dash, beneath the lever that makes the blades start..push button switch...
So mine will not even start again. Until it completely cools off like the next day. I took off the filter, tried to start it and a bunch of gas was shooting out.
Mine cranks but won't start. I assume there's an air filter as well? Has new battery one year old. It did run out of gas last time I used it. Started right up after I added gas. Maybe it sucked debris into the filter when it ran out. I'll check that first.
My fuel gauge seems to be broken tank is full but it shows empty and just moves up and down, looks just like yours I have the s100, is there a way I can fix that or do they need to come out and do it
I just fixed mine by myself. I had a guy put on new battery, spark plut and filters. Still wouldn't start. I watched a youtube video. The gas cap has a hole in it. Take off the cap and the rubber liner had 3 holes in it. The liner will pop out. I cleaned all four holes and put it back on and it fired right back up. Wow. I couldn't believe a gas cap could stop a mower from starting. But it was a free fix.

Glad I could help, I started putting only non ethanol gas in my mower that also seems like it helps.
I checked everything in that video but the fuse. Quick swap out and I’m back in business. Thank you sir.
Glad it helped
You can also start mower while off of it if the brake is locked down
thank for the comment, I have done that also
So much value in one video. Thank you sir. About to work on neighbor’s e120
thanks for watching
Thank you so much!
With this video I got my old but new to me mower going and driving
Every other video was too fast or not informative. ❤❤
Welcome
I've checked a few of these and there are some that I haven't. I'm hoping it will be one of them and I won't have to go further than that. This is the kind of video I've been looking for. Thanks.
Your welcome thanks for watching
Your first tip saved me a call to my father-in- for help-- Thank you!
Welcome
I just used your vid to troubleshoot my issue this morning (safety switch under the seat worked itself loose). Thank you, Sir!
Glad it helped
Thanks. One thing to add would be moisture. Apparently after going through each thing you mentioned, it was moisture in the engine from all the rain, humidity and dew we’ve been having in my area. Once it dried out it fired up on the first turn, whereas it was starting up, but not turning over until it dried out.
Never thought of that, thanks for watching
This is a perfect concise video…turned out it was our fuse! Thanks for a great, informative video!
Glad it helped!
Awesome I’m glad my videos help you. Thanks you very much for the nice long comment.
Same thing literally happened to me today, but it was fuel filter and battery.
Especially that nice oil filter, 30 seconds
I am a single woman with a huge yard so get you. This guy is so easy to follow. My John Deere is running again.
@@maggiebarks2395 glad I could help
Even though I have a dixon riding mower for 16 years I am still learning something new thank you mr.jim.
Your welcome glad I could help
Dude you saved my life. Mine was in reverse!! Wouldn't start THANK YOU THANK YOU!
Glad I could help
Brake pedal switch mechanism was disconnected from it's bracket. Once re-positioned brake pedal switch into it's bracket, cranked right up. I would have never found this it not for your helpful video. BIG thanks.
Awesome glad I could help
Was hoping for solenoid or starter testing. But good through checklist prior to it. Thanks!
sorry thanks for watching
Wasn't fancy, wasn't sexy. Just some good basic useful information, right to the point.
thanks Mark
Thanks for the checklist. Determined it's the starter. Heard the noise. Now to find a remove and replace the starter video.
Thanks for watching
Great video. The one thing I didn’t know about is the fuse you pointed out. That fuse caught my eye when I was going to replace my battery. I had know idea it was there until that moment. Now I know to check it if the engine will not turn over.
Thanks for watching
Thanks you so much. My switch wasn't in place for the clutch to engage it. Very big help.
Awesome glad I could help thanks for watching
You save me money, mine was on reverse. Thank you soooo much
You're welcome, glad I could help.
Well you overlooked the pto engagement switch, they become miss-aligned or otherwise out of position , causing no start condition when pto lever is disengaged . Dont know what the fix is yet , still working on it . Other wise you did a good job covering the subject. Thank you for sharing .
Thank you
Just above the fuel filter he pointed out, is the fuel pump.
Thanks for the tip and for watching
Many thanks! I was stumped why my LA135 would not start. FUSE! I didnt even know it had a fuse. Appreciate your help so much. The fuse was 75 cents.
Awesome glad I could save you some money
Love how you explain slowly and demonstrate the how to, especially for us women folk. This is not in our DNA! 😊 and totally greek to us.
Glad I could help, thanks for watching
Jim, so glad I've come across your channel.
My D110 has been working great until this past week. It simply shut down while I was mowing, and would not restart.
I let it sit for a while and it started right up and runs strong, but dies again within a couple minutes. Repeated this multiple times. Starts quick, runs well and dies. Everything you've shown in this video seems not to apply.
Have you seen this th-cam.com/video/0qStUg0ImoI/w-d-xo.html
Good video Jim. I tried all those things but it still would not start. I opened up the air filter box and sprayed carb cleaner down the hole and still nothing. So I decided to see if fuel was reaching the carb so I disconnected the gas line at the carb and turned over the engine to see if gas would squirt out. And guess what, it did, and not only that but the darn thing started, with me holding on to the gas line. After that I plugged it back in and it started again. I'm not sure why but it works now.
There is something with the gas lines I have not exactly figured it out but I have another video on it. th-cam.com/video/0qStUg0ImoI/w-d-xo.html
Saved me at least $300 on my E160. Much appreciation.
Super awesome glad I could help thanks for watching my video
Nice video, I learned a number of things. My new (3 months) S120 was fine. I was mowing and stopped, emptied the bags and now it will not start. I turn the key and nothing. Checked all the stuff, the lights and all come on, it shows the gas is full, but I turn the key and nothing. Had to push it back to the shop (taking a few rests along the way). Guess I will be calling John Deer.
Thanks for watching, hope you get it figured out
Third video’s a charm. I haven’t fixed it yet but this video is a great start, thank you!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching
Thank you for taking the time to make & upload this video. Saved me lots of time & $$. It was just the 20amp fuse.
You're welcome! Glad I could save you some $$
Thank you sir . - nice instruction- on some kohler engines you don’t thread in the dipstick to check the oil level , on a Briggs if it has too much oil it can blow a cloud of blue smoke when you start it - if the mower has an electric clutch for the more deck it won’t start if it is pulled out
Thanks for the info! This might help someone out
Good videos. Should the fuel filter be showing full while in use? Or partially full okay? I was having issues with earwigs in the empty tank over the winter getting stuck in the fuel intake tube. Noticed the partial full filter while troubleshooting. Thx.
Partially full, thanks for watching
Hi Jim....nice video.... Great info....It can be something simple that everyone can overlook....tks for sharing.....Take care
Thanks for the nice comment
Hello. I have a x125 series. Videos are very easy to comprehend. Thank you. Need to do some work on it. Can you recommend a online store I can purchase original parts? Thank you once more.
Sorry really not sure. I would just search OEM parts for John Deere
Thank you for this. I used a multimeter per your suggestion and found the battery needed a charge. Must have left the key on.
Glad I found you on here. Good vids. I learned a lot. Hope I don't lose you

I struggled to get my JD LA145 started. Turns out that the valves weren't set right. Once I straightened them out it now starts every time. Good list of things to check first.
Thanks, was it hard to set your valves?
@@DIYJIM I have the Briggs service manual. I watched a few TH-cam videos. Get the piston to TDC. It was easy. Just take your time.
Ok thank you my John Deere is running good for now but I will keep that in mind if I have to adjust the valves
Video helped me start my new John Deere that wouldn’t start. Success!
Glad I could help
I watched all of his videos and I think he was really educational because I know every thing about them.
Thanks for watching
Thanks Jim for the troubleshooting, I have an S100 (2022) I went through all of the steps, there also seems to be a sensor on the Forward/Reverse pedals , if it is stuck in 'reverse' mode it will not start
That would probably be a problem.
Best checklist! helped us find a dead mouse in the engine!
Holy smokes thanks for watching
Thanks, turned out to be a blown fuse. Video helped me imensesly.....
Glad it helped
Thanks!!
Glad I could help thanks for watching
Thanks for the video. When I removed the fuel filter no fuel came out of the fuel line. When I removed the gas cap, fuel came gushing out of line. So probably a blockage. And Last year engine would not start because my head gasket leak was putting too much oil in cylinder and fouling up the spark plug.
Hope you have better luck with your mower. They sure do not build them like the used to.
Thanks man looking at video had me realize had cord on battery backwards
Glad I could help thanks for watching
I have one, and it doesn’t have a saftey for low oil. The filter on mine was loose and rode it a couple of times with zero oil in it. Good think I noticed before it got bad
Holy smokes, thanks for watching
Nice video and helpful. Turns out it was the brake switch sticking. Thanks.
Glad it helped
Hey Jim can you help my John Deere isn’t idling correctly or missing I have to run it with the chock about 3/4 up and the minute I try to put the blades on it stalls. Any information would be appreciated and thank you for your time
Try this th-cam.com/video/0qStUg0ImoI/w-d-xo.html
Thank you
So I noticed that after I turned my mower off, it sounded like a clicking or vibrating noise coming from the engine. I wiggled the starter cable and it stopped. Now I'm trying to start it back and it acts as if it's dead. The battery isn't dead and my fuse is good. I'm wondering if it's something to do with the starter.
Sounds like it could be something to do with your starter. Hope you get it figured out. Thanks for watching
@@DIYJIM It was the solenoid. JD said it was pretty common with the model I have.
The electrical connection on the solenoid on mine doesn’t fit tight. My front yard has a few bumps so mowing my lawn is great until I hit a few of those bumps and it comes loose just enough to make it stall.
Maybe you can get a new connection thanks for watching
Good info. How do you clean it? Can you spray it off? Maybe compressed air?
I use my blower to blow off the deck and then I also use my hose a couple times a season.
Great video. Don't switch fuel line hoses by the carb. It won't start if you put one on the wrong line.
Thanks for the tip
Thank you for the video. A great help for non startup isues.

thank you so much… i just seen the fuse was blown. i just assumed it was for the lights or something ha. still didn’t know it was blown but I do now Ty .… can honestly say you are the first you tube video IVE EVER kept watching after i figured out the issue , and i did immediately or I’m sure this is it . let’s hope it’s all that’s wrong . going to go get a fuse.

@@nvrgvnup4346 just Google what could make my fuse blow on my lawn mower. There are a few answers that come up. Hope this helps
@@DIYJIM ty that’s what I’m doing rn .. i may post on the main thread and ask if anyones had the same prob Ty …
After 3 days and $50 spent 4 nothing, i found that my blade engagement switch was bad..under the dash, beneath the lever that makes the blades start..push button switch...
Glad you figured it out, thanks for watching
What if it starts and runs very rough then stops but won't start again.. lots of gas coming out where the air filter is.
Maybe try watching this th-cam.com/video/0qStUg0ImoI/w-d-xo.html
So mine will not even start again. Until it completely cools off like the next day. I took off the filter, tried to start it and a bunch of gas was shooting out.
Mine cranks but won't start. I assume there's an air filter as well? Has new battery one year old. It did run out of gas last time I used it. Started right up after I added gas. Maybe it sucked debris into the filter when it ran out. I'll check that first.
hope you got it figured out
Air filter is typically all the way up front on the engine. Under a cover with hand screws
Always the safety switch. Thanks Jim!
Your welcome
My fuel gauge seems to be broken tank is full but it shows empty and just moves up and down, looks just like yours I have the s100, is there a way I can fix that or do they need to come out and do it
Not sure I think the fuel tank has a spring on it.
Thanks so much for this, saved me a trip and some money (brake cut off switch out of place)
Glad it helped! Thank you for leaving a comment
Awesome glad you got it working.
