I have this same motor. Where would you adjust the linkage to keep it from wanting to pop into forward gear? Thanks in advance.
I had a similar sound on an old mercury 35, turns out the spring near the top of the starter had broken and was allowing the starter teeth sprocket to make contact with the flywheel intermittently.

Friend, I bought a 1978 Mercury 200 20 hp long leg, I would like to know where the screws are to remove the leg or the system where the propeller is because I have to do some work on it, my gearbox is stuck, could you please help me?
If the pump hose has gotten stiff and all that has gone through it is Amsoil synthetic!?!?!? Hmmmm???? Wonder what it does to the seals in the gear case? Just wondering

I got a 20hp same motor i had a guy go trough it he got it going i brought it to the lake got it id forward and once boat started to plane out i got a bad vibration in lower unit almost like it kicked out of forward id have to almost come to a stop and go again and it would be ok intell little over half throttle any reason for that u could come up with or how to fix it ?

I had the pee hole plugged by a mud daubber wasp 2x over the last 2 seasons- poked with a wire while running and it pushed through!

It's your seals between the water pump and gear box.

hey michael... great site..i grew up with '54 and '56 7.5 and 15 horse evinrudes running on the wapsie up by Littleton. ( I'm from Waterloo ..I see you are from Wellman.. great to see another Iowan!) ..anyway was looking for something in the 20 horse range don't know if you sell 'em as well as work on them... I'm not afraid to work on anything..am in the the process of making one of one of your stands.. Anyway let me know if you could and keep up the good work!

So I have a 20hp mercury 200 series electric and having trouble finding the year of it... has silver stripes with some red in it. Anybody know about what year it is?

What water pump kit did you use in this video? I’ve got a Mercury 200 20hp late 70s model and since it hasn’t ran in years I’m planing on replacing the water pump on it. I wanted to get new gaskets, impeller, and housing to give it a complete refresh.

Hey does anyone know where the thermostat is located on these motors?
Somehow I missed the CRACK repair...assumed THAT would be part 2.....OH and they are two different drive shafts....one has a groove for a o-ring and one don't....not the same. Where does that fan fit on the outboard??

Nice video Michael. Were you getting water when it was in gear. I found with my 4.5 hp Mercury when it was in neutral water flow was minimal to none. Possibly a Mercury quirk?

no water in gear, it was puffing air but no water, betting it is thermostat blockage, thanks for watching.
I put grease on my impeller like that once and it would not pump water. I took it back apart cleaned it off and it pumped fine
Where is the best place to buy a tiller handle and controls for an older mercury like this one
eBay is probably the only place to fine stuff like that.
Nice work, I wonder if the thermostat housing is clogged? Is the shift cable have a bend in it to keeping going into resverse correctly?

Michael, It's not unusual that the clutch dog needs some coaxing to engage in reverse. Usually, the engine's vibration is enough to shake it a bit and allow proper alignment and engagement. If I remember correctly, those motors have a locking mecanism that won't allow the motor to lift up in reverse. You might want to have a look at that as it a worthy safety feature. Stay safe and be merry !
Hi,great videos on the 20hp/i am presently rebuilding the same motor but its missing the prop and i cant seem to find the specs on it or where to find one...any info would be appreciated.8 spline,3inch gearbox and i believe 11inch pitch,you have one?
What is your spline count and outside diameter of the spline shaft. I may have a prop.
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina the spline has 8tooth,and the outside diameter of the gearhousing case seems to be three inch(hard to measure precisely because splineshaft runs through the middle),i believe it should bethe same as the one in your video.
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina 8splines,diameter of gearcase is 3inches(hard to measure because propshaft in the center),and i think from research the pitch is 11inches.

Put a speed controller on it.
will a speed controller work on a none brushed motor?
You cud put a speed controller on the fan so you can August the speed of the fan to what you need. I had that happened to me I put a new water pump I go to start it an it did not pee so I pulled it back a part that little wedge I put the old one in an it worked fine one other time I pulled it back a part I did not see nothing rough so I put it all back to tether an it worked that was strange. Yours might be the thermostat I'm thinking is bad or its plugged up so the water not flowing
