I found this video after someone gave me a 1970 mercury 40 4hp. This helped me a lot because he gave it to me because he couldn’t get it to run more than a couple of seconds. After watching this video I have it running like a champ now. Putting it on my 1232 jon boat soon and river testing it.

I'm loving your videos. I bought a little seamaid boat that came with a trolling motor and a 15hp evinrude for 300. I just about got her going without having to put too much money into it. These videos give me more confidence in working on my own outboards. Much appreciated!

I like the dirty and real way you put these videos together. Don't edit the video to make it look like you're a wizard, show the mess, show the little mistakes that you can correct given a little more poking. Speeding up the carb rebuild with notes was well done.

I just bought a Mercury 4.5, looks like it’s from the 80’s for $50. Looks exactly the same as yours. Very nice shape. I’ve been messing with that choke lever for the past 45 mins, and I thought, I’ll look through your old videos to see if you’ve done one, low and behold, your tip just saved me breaking the choke lever off. Thank you. Love the vids.

You are going to hit your own kinks down the road but it is up to you to figure it out! Glad mine is back to life, I got it for free and put less than a $100 in it. Was this an intended pun - a 2 stroke Merc "smoking" deal? They DO smoke and I do love them. You have the patience of a saint when you continue to answer nicely on the 37th question about where you buy your parts from. C'mon people. read the comments, then ask if it isn't already answered! By the way, you probably figured out that the little square bolt that holds down the shift shaft seal is a 13/64ths. Have you ever seen one of these 70's Mercs that runs counter clockwise? My 1972 Merc 40 4 HP does. Impeller vanes have to face the other way.

@@Michaelsbackyardmarina Hi there again! I have some issues with my 1977 mercury 4,5hp 2 stroke. when i have the gas throttle on shift mode, the whole motor is vibrating a lot and the sound from the engine is not consistent. Do you think i have to adjuste the air screw on the carburetor or is that just what 2 stroke is all about? And there is one more thing, when i have the gas throttle on fast the motor is having trouble holdning a constant pace, it feels almost like its choking.
Im very new to this so i feel i need to ask someone and i thought of you!
Hope you having a nice day!

I've noticed that you can put the top part of the carb (the "lid" that has the seat and needle) back in two different ways. Does it matter? The partnumber of the lid (1399-5808) should face forwards? You put it back the other way around...compare 19.39 and 38.01...

I have a 1980 Mercury "Gnat" model 40 (4hp). I've had it on the water, it'll fire right up, run solid for about 10 mins then die as if its running out of gas. After two pulls, it'll fire right up and run for another 10 mins then die as if running out of gas. I can repeat this all afternoon. I have a new external tank (yes vent is open), new fuel hoses to the motor, new primer bulb, the carburetor has been removed & rebuilt, all new fuel lines put in. It was suggested to me that the motor may be getting too hot causing the motor to shut down. it spits water, but my next move is to replace the impeller/water pump. also suggested to replace coil. Any ideas as to what may be causing this condition? Maybe the fuel pump? Thanks, BW

On the one I am working on, I got it to start and run and am still messing with the water pump which did not come apart as easy as yours. I do have another question about the clamps that hold the motor to the transom. Is there an easy way to separate the large washer from the end of the bolt to swap it out? Two questions, I can't seem to get the lower section of the water pump off. Is there a trick to that? Also, I drained the gear oil which unfortunately had some water in it. How much gear oil should I add back in?

    • @Michaelsbackyardmarina

Lower section can fit very tight. Proceed with caution. There are two holes. One at the top and one at the bottom. You pump in from the bottom till it comes out the top.

Can you do a tutorial on either of these two motors 1974 or 1975 where you join the leg onto the motor to show how to fix problems with gear shift when it is not in the right position to line up in correlation with the selector on motor I've spent hours trying and I'm not keen to pull the whole thing to bits. It would be an awesome video as so many people have problems with it. My problem is in reverse the sharft is engaging both ways clock wise and ccw. When it's in forward gear it's in reverse it doesn't matter how many times I try to adjust the shift rod same outcome or I can't even get movement on the gear leaver any help from anyone would be much appreciated.

Also what size fuel connector/ line do I need for this. the female end that plugs into the motor

Just taking a shot here. I have an early 70s 4 hp mercury with no model number. I'm in need of a fuel line hose connector to the motor. Somewhere I read the number is on a "freeze plug" but I don't know if there is one on this motor or where to find it if there is. Any ideas...........

Good video. I’m currently working on a 4.5 hp Merc with water pumping problems. But what did you end up doing with the water tube that runs up to powerhead? Was it bent, or did you just put it back up in place? I know it goes into a rubber grommet with a hard plastic top that mates to the powerhead. Thanks. Rick

Not running properly, hard to start, after just paying an engine service center hundreds of dollars to service carburetor. The carburetor was full of crap, the float valve was stuck closed, the idle jets totally plugged, the carb had not been opened! Incredibly, the engine is sold without a fuel filter! It now has an in-line filter! Amazing!

Hi great video i'm from New Zealand and have just bought one of these motors and would like to know how i can source parts, because it seem to be tired up with dealers here, i asked a couple and they wouldn't sell me them. Its missing choke knob, fuel attachment for the tote to plug into and they ran the fuel line straight to the pump which has caused the line to bend and crack with not enough fuel getting in and i can't seem to fit the cowling back on is there a certain nack to it, i noticed one of the leavers is a bit loose. excuse the lack of terminology.

I have a 4.5hp which looks the same as yours, but mine does not push that much water even though I changed the impeller. It spits out hot and pretty much boiling water. I don't want and also I can't take it apart to clean the insides... The bolts are rusted to hell and to find new gaskets is going to be trouble in my country.. It runs great but the only problem is the cooling.. Any tips or tricks on how to clean the inside ? My guess it was used on salt water but never flushed out and left there sitting in the garage for a long time..

@@Michaelsbackyardmarina So far I had to completely disassemble all around the cooling pathways and clean it manually. Man oh man there was a LOT of junk there... Whole system was filled with limescale, salt deposits, rust and random junk.. Now I have a another problem haha.. All of the bolts that we're holding the plates which lead to the cooling system are broken since they've been rusted to hell.. Gonna try to find some other bolts and fit them and hopefully it will run a lot cooler :)

So if head stays cold I would check the pisser pipe and elbow. Blow some compressed air up it while the motor is running. About 20psi. Spiders and wasps love to build nests in there.
