    A beautiful theme for an amazing ending.
    The chemistry between Ashitaka and San was handled excellently in this film.Both characters had similar conflicts to deal with.Ashitaka had to be the peacemaker between humanity vs nature while San faced an identity crisis of being human or wolf.Despite the fact San despised what humans were doing to their living conditions she didn't want to kill all humans.The only person whose head she wanted on a silver platter was Lady Eboshi so it would drive off all her followers.Towards the finale of this huge conflict though San finally realizes not all humans are irredeemable as seen of course with Ashitaka.
    Loved their interaction when Ashitaka and San came to an agreement they wouldn't live together but instead be close by allowing them to visit whenever it was possible.
    If that's not true love then I don't know what is.

      +4T3hM4kr0n!
      My two cents on San saying she cannot forgive humans I feel is basically Miyazaki saying "Yes people do unforgivable things but that doesn't mean you can't work for a new better tomorrow.".San has every right to feel this way about finding it unforgivable considering Eboshi/Jigo almost screwed everyone in that area over by taking off the forest spirits head and Ashitaka understands her reasons.The impression I got off this interaction is San doesn't want to kill Eboshi or her followers anymore but that doesn't mean she won't help them either.I believe they subtly imply through San accepting her humanity by loving Ashitaka means she will eventually come to help the others given even Eboshi wants to thank Ashitaka and build Iron Town in a proper manner.

      Webbyneon89 do not forget bro, what makes it more special is that unlike disney movies, the heroes choose their own faith and both went to the right direction, Ashitaka will help rebuilding Irontown and San will keep protecting the forest, but it is nice they will be in touch forever :)

      @RB01.10 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      4T3hM4kr0n! Yeah that's the one minor gripe I had with this film. It was San not forgiving them, as well as them not ending up together. I understand why they didn't, but I still would've liked to see it.

  • @salehbayram7046
    @salehbayram7046 7 ปีที่แล้ว +868

    to me San and Ashitaka's love is the purest, unlike other movies specially disney cartoons the heroes actually fought for a great goal which is to save the forest and both had to face their own struggles (Ashitaka had to leave his whole life and San is fighting with the reality that she is a human and always will be one) it is just so sad that they couldnt be together at the end, but since Ashitaka will always visit her and be close to her that might get things better :)

    • @janesgems7
      @janesgems7 5 ปีที่แล้ว +102

      I got the impression that they would eventually, as the villagers would only need his help to rebuild their town; during that time it would give San a chance to accept what she was, and she already had started to do so. Just as Eboshi had accepted her own mistakes by admitting San had helped save them all.

      seragx99 Yeah, it really sort of saddens me that the "best animated picture" award even exists in the first place. Not because I don't feel animated films don't deserve the award, but because it's like a box they invented to shove animated films so they wouldn't have to nominate them for best picture. It's really saddening and frustrating when there are so many amazing animated films, U.S. and foreign. Meanwhile, they tend to favor one genre of live-action films and ignore pretty much everything else.

      It interests me because I think that both the humans (Lady Eboshi and her men) and the gods (The Wolves and Boars) were both so obtuse and could never find common ground. But when I analyze it further, both humanity and nature had at least one member who was balanced and sympathetic. For nature, it's the great forest spirit, and for humanity it's ashitaka (and to some lesser extent, mononoke).

    • @Autz64
      @Autz64 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Pretty much, in the end they both learned the lesson. Humans learned the importance of the forest spirit, and gods -despite they couldn't save the forest- knows that was thanks to a human (humans counting San) that they save what's left.

    • @DogMechanic
      @DogMechanic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      San and Ashitaka are more like a representation of where lines between civilization and nature blur, imo. They both exist in this kind of middle ground where they are both at odds with either side, because they refuse to coexist without conflict.
      Ashitaka criticizes Eboshi, San criticizes Okkoto. Ashitaka hates the boar for cursing him and Eboshi for cursing the boar. San hates Ashitaka (at first) because the forest spirit saved him, but not Moro, and Eboshi for cursing Moro (I love Lady Eboshi, but she's kind of a bitch).
      There are lots of parallels, even in their backgrounds. The Gods are animals with human like personalities and the tribe Ashitaka comes from are a civilization that is close to nature, for instance.
      The god linking it all together is even a deer with a human face.
      Still, they manage to reconcile their differences and fight for their side while also attempting to preserve the other (in the end); love is the answer for everthing, ala typical Miyazaki flick.
      Yakul (the elk) is a badass tho

      That I feel is one of the greatest story beats you can achieve. The events within the story actually mean something, things have changed for better or worse, people have grown and walked down their paths. A lot of stories these days seem like their own little contained bubbles, things happen but they don't actually change much in regards to their respective universes and the worlds the stories take place in. In some ways that is often a limit of using real life backdrops and settings etc though also some writing problems are to blame as well.

    Their on-screen time together wasn't long but it was so moving. Ashitaka was forced to leave his home permanently because he was cursed and San was forced to grow up too fast and become battle-hardened due to her parents abandoning her. Both are the results of someone else's conflict. Both saw each other for who they really are: Ashitaka saw San as the scared little girl who desperately needs comfort and San saw Ashitaka as a warrior who missed his home and was in pain on the inside. He helped her be more open-minded and realize that not all humans are bad and she brought him a sense of peace he hadn't felt ever since he left his village. They both needed each other. Purest Ghibli couple, change my mind.

    I always find myself tearing up to this song. I remember hearing this one day (before watching Princess Mononoke) and was completely swept away with it. It almost sounds corny, but I was trying to find this song for a looong time. Then, after being introduced to Studio Ghibli's movies, I found myself at the end of Princess Mononoke.
    Being a bit of an environmentalist nut myself (yeah yeah "go hug a tree" whatever), I could not help but feel so many things in the last scene (I'll try to stay away from spoilers, but yeah it somewhat has to do with the environment and how people treated it). Once this music played and nature began its course, I couldn't even begin to explain the frisson I felt. I was completely and utterly speechless. I couldn't express myself in anything other than tears. From specifically this movie, this scene, THIS SOUNDTRACK... until what I hope and feel will be forever, I can't find myself in anything other than an overflow of emotion when hearing and seeing these movies. I'm rambling at this point, but my goodness it's as if I found the light at the end of a tunnel with Ghibli.
    Wonderful. Absolutely and stunningly wonderful.

    After all those years, just hearing the first five notes is enough to bring tears to my eyes. Such a magnificent movie.
    Everything about it - the story, the characters, the wonderful art, the amazing soundtrack - resonates with the dark pit I have instead of a soul. Studio Ghibli has blessed us with so many wonderful stories, but this one will always, always be the one I love the absolute most.
    Just thinking about the deer God brings tears to my eyes right away. This movie, to me personally, also is symbolic of my own transition from a child seeing magic everywhere to a woman. I felt lost for a long time, but I have found the magic again in science and the world seen through a microscopic lense. Thank you, Studio Ghibli, for giving us this wonderful gift.

    This movie is truly a spectacle to behold. I got to chance to catch this movie again in theaters for ghibli fest and it’s truly one movie that should definitely be seen on screen. Everything that’s beautiful and vibrant to look at is even better on the big screen. But with that aside. Hayao Miyazaki sure knows how to make some of the best movies of all time, and having Joe Hisaishi there to make the music is just the cherry on top. This duo together can make something truly remarkable and they have showed it once more in this film. The story, the message, the characters, the soundtrack and of course the animation is truly incredible. Especially for a film made in the late 90’s. I’m so glad that I got the chance to see this movies and what I would give to go back and see them for the first time. Miyazaki and Hisaishi are truly legends!!!

    This ending was really bittersweet, like so many other Miyazaki films. Ashitaka and San couldn't be together physically, but they can apparently meet once in a while, and everyone is healing from the conflict, working to rebuild what was destroyed in the fighting. The people of Irontown begin to learn to live in harmony with nature. Like I said, bittersweet. Another similar ending but way more towards the bitter side would be the ending to "The Amber Spyglass", the last book in the "His Dark Materials" trilogy. Man, the ending to that made me cry like a baby, and left me in a depressive rut for a good while. Just the prospect of falling in love, and then not being able to be with your loved one no matter what you do, that kind of ending really gets to me.

    in terms of Ashitaka and San’s relationship, to me this is the perfect ending. a boy and a girl don’t necessarily have to immediately become a couple in a romantic way. there are more forms of relationships with mutual trust and love. of course in the future they might end up together as spouse, but it’s up to them :)
    She doesn’t have to forgive what humans did, she has every right not to. And in order to eventually let go of her anger and sadness, she first needs to be accepted as she is, including that she can’t forgive them. Ashitaka did accepted her, and that’s all that matters.

      My guess is that the English dub changed it to his sister on purpose because otherwise young audience in English speaking countries get confused why Ashitaka doesn’t go back to see his ‘fiancée’ once he is healed.

      @@lowkie78 if that’s how you interpret, I think that’s fine.
      but ‘I want you to remember me’ only appears in English translation. in the original version, Kaya doesn’t mention about herself and only wish she has is that he lives. She clearly mentions that the dagger is her prayer for him to live, knowing that they wouldn’t see each other again. you might remember that he cut his hair before he leaves. it means he no longer belongs to the community and never to return. this custom actually still exists in Japan - like sumo wrestlers cut their hair when they retire.
      I think, he gave it to San because he acted the same way as Kaya. The curse was going to kill him anytime soon, and he wasn’t supposed to see her ever again, so he might wanted San to have it instead of him, for her to survive the deadly war. selfless act, I want to say.

      And so in the end they don't get married and they are free (and maybe will remain so to remain faithful to their fiancé, even if that is not confirmed).
      However, what is a bit strange is knowing that Kaya and Ashitaka's child will be born without ever knowing their father.

    The song itself shows the purity of love, how bravery is hard yet beautiful and lastly how pure souls ashitaka and San have. Todays generation (gen z) should learn the purity and transparency of love from this type of love

    Princess Mononoke will always have a special place in my heart! There’s something different and magical about this piece from the other Studio Ghibli’s works I’ve seen. Although San and Ashitaka did not get a formal ending together, at least Ashitaka will remain close and visit her, so in a sense, they will eventually end up together in my opinion but just not at the time when movie ended.

      I believe that’s highly Plausible, Since offscreen they could now be in a romantic relationship

    Their bond for each other is clear as day, but they also respect each other and their decisions. That's love right there. Realistic yet perfect ending.
