I got an Orient Kamasu, red dial, for Christmas. With 200 meters of water resistance, lume that is bright and lasts for several hours, a moderately sized case that fits well under shirt cuffs, and a lug with that allows for different strap/band/bracket combinations, and an affordable price...it's a great option.
It's my first "real" automatic dive watch, and I'm quite proud of it.✌🏽👍🏽

I have 3 dive watches in my collection currently, but my favorite (that I own...lol) is my Spinnaker SP-5080-02 Hunley. Screw down (large and well knurled) signed crown, 200m water resistance, sapphire crystals front and back, 120 click unidirectional bezel, Seiko NH35 movement, excellent finishing, and it's a lume monster. With an MSRP of $350, it's a great entry level automatic dive watch.

you maybe a licensed PADI driver buy you need to get more knowledge about water resistance ratings of watches. it's a very misleading, misinformed number. 100 meters water resistance mean the watch is good for swimming and snorkel diving but that's all. you can't dive with 100m water rated watch at all.

I own both the citizen and the PADI. I am a PADI MSDT instructor with hundreds of dives from Antarctica to the Red Sea. The Citizen dives better and I see it on wrists more often. The PADI is a bit nicer as a desk diver. I'm hard on them and they are a part of my kit. I'm now n a position to own more expensive dive watches like Blancpain 50 or Rolex etc but I still dive the citizen or the PADI. I know it's not expense but the Citizen is what I look for on the wrist when I travel and need a dive buddy. The stories are better but if they have a PADI I know they're good but have a day job. Full honesty, if you have a beat up Blancpain I'm going to buy you a beer to hear how it got beat up.

I recently bought the Certina Ph500 with black dial. I love the unique lockable spring loaded hexagonal bezel, the 80 hour power reserve and mine is well within COSC spec at -2 secs per day accuracy. I get a lot of comments as unlike Seiko or Rolex it is very uncommon.

I own the PADI. Per your last video, I picked up the PADI thinking it would become a future classic. 5 years later there was no buzz, so I replaced the steel bracelet with a navy rubber strap, so much better. All that said, I think the Citizen is a better buy.

The Citizen isn't an automatic. But then, any quartz, in terms of function, is a "better buy" than any mechanical.

Thanks for all of the great content you provide, maybe a short video about spring bars not all being created equal(seiko diver spring bars come to mind)and aftermarket straps for proper fit. It may keep some folks from losing a watch. Again thanks for all of the information you and your team put out for us.

My favorite of this list is the Mido Ocean Star and the Certina in a close second! As you said Certina don’t have representation in n North America and that is very sad because they have very good watches for a very competitive price. I have one Certina that I acquired in Japan because I couldn’t find it in this side of the world! Very good video and keep the good work my friend!

Not a watch snob, how refreshing. A quartz Casio for $60 make the list, nice. I have a similar Casio, it is a good watch. Sometimes you want to wear a watch when you shouldn't.

The almost total lack of attention that the Steinhart brand receives is very perplexing. The Swiss made (Jura) Ocean 44 utilizes an ETA 2824 movement, good water resistance and handsome looks with some color options. I have several of their watches, including the larger Ocean and they have been good watches and strong values. It's a bit of a pain to order from Europe, but I have experienced fast shipping, and excellent customer support on the one warranty issue I encountered. They should receive more consideration. IMHO. That being said, you have some great choices here. Keep up the great content, thanks!

I have the Glycine combat sub with red bezel and it is is the best value for money. iv bought since invicta bought them and there is 0 changes. Swiss movement, sapphire crystal, 42mm, 10.6 mm thick. bracelet is form fitting. For $350 off most websites this is the best thin you can buy. Entry level luxury for one of the best quality watches out there.

Great list video! It’s still the best way to learn a lot of information about many watches very quickly.
One note about the marathon 36mm option is if you wear it on a bracelet or a mid to light toned NATO, it does tend to bulk up the profile on the wrist compared to the black rubber strap.

This the one ☝🏼 Have to agree with you 100% on the Vostok. The model you reviewed is probably the only one I would consider. Especially with the strap you paired with it! Good taste my man 👌🏼

I can't argue with the options in this review Teddy. It's great to see the Marathon and the Tissot Seastar in this list. My first Swiss made diver was a Tissot Seastar 1000, an old model, it still works great and over the years is reliable and well within tolerances for accuracy. The only gripe with mine is the stamped clasp but having said that it works perfectly fine in life. It still gets wrist time but not as much as it used to. The new 2000 version on this list certainly looks like an improvement in some areas although I slightly prefer the older models port hole aperture for the date.

Great video again, Teddy! For me, it feels like the Swatch steals the show here with the MIDO and the Tissot Sea Star. I think the Seiko with the pepsi bezel and the Orient Kamatsu deserve honours here too.
The MIDO - I love how close to the crystal the dial is as this often results in one of my favourite effects on watches where the hands catch the light at certain angles but the dial doesn't and you get this cool visual effect with hands glistening and almost floating over a darker dial. Question on the MIDO - you didn't discuss it's lume... how good is the brightness and duration of the lume compared to the Tissot and to the likes of Seiko and the Orient?
Do Orient watches get luma-brite also?

  • @thomasmoffatt

It is wonderful to have such diversity in watches. But personally I find the moving bezel unnecessary and superfluous. Much happier with a watch like baby Alpanist that is simpler visually while still having good water resistance and ruggedness.

Dive watches are the coolest looking watches period.
Great review of good affordable ones.
    Tissot’s are what I bought.
Perfect size for men, at 46mm.
They make smaller watches look like cheap toys in comparison.
    Even far more expensive ones.

Great list! A lot of good options are missing, but understandable. From Certina I like the Certina DS Action Diver, great size and cheaper than the option offered here. I guess the Super PH500M is the more professional option.
