Great analysis! I would really enjoy a video about the differences between all the Darth Vader helmets from Episodes 3 through 6, Rouge One, and the Obi-Wan Kenobi show.
Reusing the Rouge One helmets for the Mandalorian was a good choice because they are better as you have shown. Also Militaries do go back and refit older gear & repurpose it for modern use as it looking like what they Empire did in this case.
The comparisons are down to if you prefer the actual movie prop helmets of the original trilogy or the modern interpretation, they were originally just movie props and not meant to be over analysed. As a kid in 1977 watching ANH at the cinema the stormtroopers were like nothing i'd ever seen and their armour and helmets were incredible looking so to bemoan their appearance decades later and to compare them to the later Disney offerings is somewhat irrelevant considering without them the lineage that Disney draws on to "improve" the helmet would be non existent .
it is in fact not symmetrical though if you look closely. The guy that modelled them for the movie Sam Williams also posted some orthos of it on his artstation which really shows it. The bottom half of the eyes curve and the two openings size mainly on the "chin piece" is what differs left and right.
I like the new ones, they have some uniformity to them so that's great. The classics fit very well in the OT though, that style speaks to the era in the universe and ours. Gotta say the Mimban stormtroopers from Solo look a lot more like OT troopers, might be that cap on the forehead they have but the mouth piece also looks bigger.
I do feel like the new ones fit the universe better. Also, I’ll have to look into the mimban stormtrooper, the helmets do look more ANH stunt-ish. Great catch!
Correction, in Kenobi, there are plenty of 501st Legion Club members in the door / bunker scene, so you can even see in some shots people wearing EFX stormtrooper helmets which were popular within the club in the 2010-2015 period.
I definitely prefer the new style. I really want to join the 501st, and I want to build the modern Imperial armor as my build, but I literally can't find anyone that sells screen accurate molds. Disney must have them under lock and key.
We’ve vacuuformed a couple TK helmets at work, it’s interesting how many variants there are just in the fan community. Also, the Black Series Stormtrooper runs the tiniest bit tight in my opinion
Though I appreciate these videos about the different designs of the stormtrooper armor and helmets, I really couldn’t care less whether the teeth of the frown are black or grey.
I think they standardized them. ANH has two variants as you mentioned, as well as two others in ESB and ROTJ, I think this makes everything more uniformed. I do admit ESB is probably my favorite helmet but I do like that the empire actually has some uniformity to it now.
Its not really a "lore change" to have variations in uniforms when its a galaxy spanning empire, and the IRL reasons for the change could also be justifiably used for the in work reasons too: old&new designs, different design teams/companies/locations, etc etc.
If you take a second look at the imperial remnant helmets in the Mandalorian they are slightly redesigned they are slightly larger and the frowns are longer, maybe a little bit taller. Throughout the Mandalorian season two they go back-and-forth and using the updated remnant helmet and the rogue one helmet you can see it quite prominently in the scene in season two where Bo Katan and her mandos are storming the imperial freight ship
Stormtrooper helmets and Sandtrooper helmets are different that’s why the brow is higher on the Sandtrooper also the markings in the Sandtrooper are different than the reg TK (Stormtrooper)
I'm very positive that we are supposed to imagine the ST helmets in Solo, Rogue One, ANH, ESB, ROTJ, and Mandalorian are ALL exactly the same model - and any detail variations are just chalked up to wear, lighting, etc. In no way do I believe for one second that these are meant to be different stages or versions, as for example, between the Clone Trooper armor in ep 2 vs ep 3.
They are beautiful. One good thing Disney did. Well that and the vader redesign. Maybe some ships too. Like Star destroyer. Maybe they had redesigned the Death Star too
I LOVE rogue one stormtrooper helmets. Gorgeous. I wish lucasfilm sold them they can make a killing. Especially from those fans that collect like crazy. In some shots you see in new hope you see the influence from the new hope look to the rogue one. One day I would love to see a 501st clown in stormtrooper armor. One good thing Disney did
I would 100% buy one if they did sell them, it’s a shame they don’t. They could charge a ton and still make a killing! Instead we have an overpriced hotel 😂
@@weirdpigeonproductions yeah they could charge 500$ to 1k for just cheap plastic versions just 100% accurate and I’d still pay. I’m tired of seeing the goofy wonky fan made stormtrooper heads at cons. I want the real thing. That and some fans try to replicate it through 3d sculpting and come up short. It’s either photogrammetry or hire a REALLY skilled 3d modeler. I once paid 2k for a commissioned one still not accurate enough. If they did they’d probably make 40 mill a month. Or just create a new line with Hasbro and they can make money in a trusted source there.
Guess I'm more of a purist. I don't like the Disney-fied armor very much, aside from the material being more durable for stunts, etc.. To me it looks janky and shoddy in the way it hangs on the body (the weird groin armor in particular), despite the finer details closeup that the audience won't really notice, the little bits I mean. You can see it for yourself by comparing the armored troopers side-by-side, OT vs Rogue One. The way the chest plate is shaped near the shoulders, there's a bigger gap there, the chest plate itself is smaller. Though with high definition the engraved sharp details it does make some sense, like if you have the money to do that I guess why not right? And these helmets are nowhere near as imposing either. Those tiny mouths, the soft rounded corners of the eyes. That's a pass for me dawg. Since the original was sculpted by hand it has more personality, an almost biological impression, a creature-like alien head. The asymmetry also lends the impression of twisted evil, especially the uneven eyes. Like they're real eyes but one is squinting a little more. One thing to note about the arched Sandtrooper brows is that this was a deliberate design choice, to lend a sense of some wear and tear, and to set them apart from the other troops. It wasn't a mistake at all. Lucas himself probably looked at it and wanted more wear and tear, long confirmed that Lucas was all about making the universe look worn down and scuffed, not clean. That extended to rebel starfighters, Millenium falcon, as well. The mouth is much daintier on Disney helmets too, aside from the 'Hero' variant original helmet. It's not threatening, the mouths on the Clone helmets weren't very threatening either because that wasn't the intent... but the Empire essentially is the Republic that became twisted, so it makes thematic sense that the slick stylized Clone helmet mouths would likewise become twisted. However, I agree these new helmets are better than ROTJ helmets. They messed up big time on those molds. If you look closely in the movie there's one troop who's leading Han and rebels out of the bunker after they've been captured and it is soooo messed up. The eyes are really warped. At least ROTJ gave us the biker scouts. Those guys are too cool. I don't mind the blackened frown on the ESB troops, like it's a small alteration the Empire went with, of course the real reason is that Kirschner probably felt it photographed better. All that said I really like the new Imperial troopers Disney has come up with. Shoretroopers, Deathtroopers, new combat pilots, etc. They're all cool.
How did they make the Rogue One Helmet? DId they scan the most symmetrical helmet and then blend the left and the right helmet together to get the symmetrical helmet?
I hate the RotJ Stormtrooper helmets simply because of the much wider solid black frown that looks like they took a blackened banana and just slapped it on there. The visible partitions look so much better. The ANH "Hero" helmets are my favorite type.
I'd hate to nitpick these details personally and just chalk it up to costuming discrepancies not meant to be focused on--even though Star Wars loves for fans with eagle eyes to notice subtle changes or details. I like to think that Rogue One helmets and armor would be the new gold standard since they ironed out the process with modern manufacturing methods that weren't available in the late 70s-80s during Original Trilogy.
Honestly, the ROTJ and ESB helmets feel like mistakes rather than canon ones. A lot of the molds for the ESB ones collapsed during the molding process, and the ROTJ ones seemed more of a rushed, inconsistent job.
I prefer the old helmets. The Remnant are the wonky ANH helmets tho. Also, every time you look at soldiers from any era, everyone looks a bit different regardless of wearing the same gear. How they wear the helmet, where they place the straps, camo etc etc. In ANH, the helmets looked lived in and just have more character. Of course this is such a minute detail.
The remnant storm trooper helmet in the mandalorian seems like a weathered anovos storm trooper helmet to me but i can't find any discussions about it online. if you take a look at hot toys remnant storm trooper figure you can see that they reused the rogue one design which looks very different compared to remnants in the series. they look similar to the anh esb stunt helmets while looking distinguishable.
I mean I think the weird helmets in rotj was just poor quality visual effects. We don't expect them to do worse CGI so that it looks more like how those characters looked in the original and prequel trilogies, so why expect them to do it for practical effects? I think it makes more sense that stormtroopers have uniform helmets.
The new helmets are rockin, I'm not upset they're using those rogue one helmets for everything - painting the frown all black is just lazy - More detailed is far better!
I wouldn't say the O.G helmets were made with love and care, they were made as cheap and as fast as possible (they did the best they could at the time) and probably made by several different workshops which is likely why there are differences and mistakes. The disney version makes more sense because the troopers are supposed to all look identical and "pristine" which fits in with the mentality of the Empire. (Also if they were wonky looking then people that are not O.G trilogy fans would think it was just a badly made helmet and complain/return the helmet) If you consider some Military units in our world allow some personal modifications or upgrades to helmets provided they don't compromise the function but in the Empire and first order the only differences are between specialised units like artillery, Military police, flame units etc and as for the 501st having O.G looking helmets, it is likely they are made from a copy of a screen used helmet blank rather than intentionally changed to look wonky
I have to correct something "handmade mold out of clay" is not correct. the sculpt is made of clay, yes, and used to create the mold, but the mold is not clay. that would a terrible idea for vacuum forming - and the majority of the helmets weren't ABS but hdpe
Disney made them better the black frown was never supposed to be there the helmets were just old and the return of the Jedi helmets are really cheaply made so the look weird
Sculpting the details is actually logical and right thing to do. If they had technology and money to do it bac in NH time, they would. I find it weird when cosplayers try to replicate quite cheaply made NH props.
I think I still like the look of the ESB helmet and ANH stunt helmet best. Then comes the RO helmet. An ESB helmet with the engraving/detailing of a RO helmet would be best imo
I find it weird that we never got an in-universe explanation for the difference of the helmet designs. I wish we did, because that would force them to think more deeply about which design to use when. For example, in the new Battlefront games, we always get the ROTJ style helmet except for sandtroopers, who use a semi stunt helmet design. If we had an in-universe explanation, then they would have to vary the helmet design depending on the map.
Yeah, it’s surprising to me that we haven’t gotten an explanation in a novel, visual dictionary, or sourcebook. It would certainly add more to the universe and, like you said, force people to think about which helmets they use and when
I’m not quite sure. The armor by design doesn’t look nearly as form fitting as clone and stormtrooper armor. It feels more like you are wearing a barrel over your torso than some kind of chest plate that’s reminiscent of Ancient Rome.
They include those arrogant 501 members in the filming because they are obsessive nearly perfect armor wearers and they are free. They aren't supposed to be paid for "trooping" so there you go, saving money all the way.
I prefer the new Rogue One helmet. They've merged all the helmets into one, into a new canon design. Also, why do you want the Mandalorian Stormtroopers to have black frowns?.Surely in this modern age you should be looking to create consistency through having a new design fit all potential time periods, than be a stickler for the behind the scenes differences in prop making techniques. Your take about using different style helmets is baffling to me. I guess it's different levels of suspension of disbelief, because when I see slight differences in design, like small differences in placement or colour, that's just a slight inconsistency. It's not a meaningful difference in design. I always see visual fiction as a sort of 'representation' of actual events (even though its fiction). So small changes in design are simply that of production technique. And to say that you miss the charm of the traditionally made helmets is valid, but I don't think it's a valid complaint about using modern production techniques to achieve better results. The only reason you likely find the old helmets charming is because they are old and you aren't judging them as a new product. The context of the old films has changed with time. If I saw a wonky ass helmet in the new ones, sure I'd find it 'charming', but its not authentic.
I guess you missed the memo…Disney said around the time Rogue One was released that this would be the ONLY stormtrooper helmet design they were going forward with on ALL projects set during the Galactic Civil War. So, no you won’t see ESB and RotJ helmets in upcoming seasons of Mandalorian. Or anything else new for that matter.
I shall start by pointing at the fact that Disney did nothing about the artistic department or costumes department. So, no, Disney didn't fixed or whatever the stormtroopers helmet, only the artistic directing with the costume team did. Well, the new helmet is meant to be seen in all of the new medias, movies and TV shows because it how it was supposed to look since a new hope. You explained it yourself, it was originally hand sculpted and vaccum formed. By the way, the sand troopers helmet, withe raised '' brow'' is an idea of the costumes team chief, he it thought it looked ''cool''. For the RotJ helmet, they use the old molds from new hope and empire, whereas they were damaged and the thus the goofy look in the last movie. So no, we're are not supposed to see the return of the jedi stormtrooper helmet style in shape or paint scheme in the Mandalorian, Ahsoka or later stories.
George Lucas said: “There are millions of planets in the Star Wars Universe”. That tells _me_ that entire companies of StormTroopers are likely to have all-black or all-gray frowns on their helmets. Stormtrooper helmets are not a hill that I’m willing to die on.
The return of the jedi helmets are probably just supposed to look like the ones from the other movies so stuff like the black mouths are probably not "canon".
The new ones are definitely technically better, but I feel like the old ones add a bit more character- like they've been used and each of them have their own characteristics. It also pushes the idea that the empire chooses quantity over quality as was explored in the bad batch with them phasing out the clones.

th-cam.com/video/uOwl7lGxEew/w-d-xo.html
But it makes sense since stormtroopers are supposed to have an advanced heads up display
They are great. Had no idea the ROTJ had black frowns.
Would love to see you do a video on the troopers from Ashoka! Great videos!
+1 subscription!
If you want ANH helmet with has been cast and hand painted then head to RS Propmasters.
They own an original screen used full set of armour.
Great analysis! I would really enjoy a video about the differences between all the Darth Vader helmets from Episodes 3 through 6, Rouge One, and the Obi-Wan Kenobi show.
Eventually I plan on doing a video on that too!
I have a love for the EFX helmet. It's the brow I have the rogue one trooper helmet from hasbro but I like the odd EFX style.
it is in fact not symmetrical though if you look closely. The guy that modelled them for the movie Sam Williams also posted some orthos of it on his artstation which really shows it. The bottom half of the eyes curve and the two openings size mainly on the "chin piece" is what differs left and right.
I don't mind the reuse in Mando, as the black frown was probably not meant as an upgrade or something, just a variant
I like the Original and the Rogue one helmets and thank you for sharing
Thanks for the comment!
Correction, in Kenobi, there are plenty of 501st Legion Club members in the door / bunker scene, so you can even see in some shots people wearing EFX stormtrooper helmets which were popular within the club in the 2010-2015 period.
I wish I could get 501st grade death trooper armor but my shadow stormtrooper helmet was mocked by them at the comic con
Long have I waited
I definitely prefer the new style. I really want to join the 501st, and I want to build the modern Imperial armor as my build, but I literally can't find anyone that sells screen accurate molds. Disney must have them under lock and key.
@Orb Yeah, but unfortunately BF2 Stormtroopers are based on the goofy ROTJ ones 😔
We’ve vacuuformed a couple TK helmets at work, it’s interesting how many variants there are just in the fan community. Also, the Black Series Stormtrooper runs the tiniest bit tight in my opinion
I like the new helmets but love the wonkyness of the originals. They have done a great job with the new design. 👏
I honestly am glad they’ve reused the RO Helmets. I really don’t like the black grille, especially with the ROTJ one
Same here
good luck with the channel. +1 sub
Thank you!
Though I appreciate these videos about the different designs of the stormtrooper armor and helmets, I really couldn’t care less whether the teeth of the frown are black or grey.
I quite like the "newer" design.
I think they standardized them. ANH has two variants as you mentioned, as well as two others in ESB and ROTJ, I think this makes everything more uniformed. I do admit ESB is probably my favorite helmet but I do like that the empire actually has some uniformity to it now.
Although the ESB helmet isn’t my favorite, I do think the black frown looks more uniform with the rest of the armor.
Its not really a "lore change" to have variations in uniforms when its a galaxy spanning empire, and the IRL reasons for the change could also be justifiably used for the in work reasons too: old&new designs, different design teams/companies/locations, etc etc.
That’s a pretty good point!
I love the new helmets but I prefer the old style body armor a new hope/ empire strikes back more. It just looks better to me
Nice interesting vid. The new helmet looks way better.
Next vid: Stormtrooper crotch armour ruined/fixed by Disney.🤯
Stormtrooper helmets and Sandtrooper helmets are different that’s why the brow is higher on the Sandtrooper also the markings in the Sandtrooper are different than the reg TK (Stormtrooper)
For the sake of the consistency of a large and well-equipped military force, I prefer the Disney version.
I like improved version better. Way more practical.
I don't think the helmets are meant to be different in universe, so it would be jaring to see different types next to each other
In my opinion it's good that they uniformed all helmets
3:19 man look how different these two helmets look
Well the difference in helmet design wouldn’t really be canonical so in universe there’ll be no difference between each armour
ANH had the best stormtrooper design in the OT
I'm very positive that we are supposed to imagine the ST helmets in Solo, Rogue One, ANH, ESB, ROTJ, and Mandalorian are ALL exactly the same model - and any detail variations are just chalked up to wear, lighting, etc. In no way do I believe for one second that these are meant to be different stages or versions, as for example, between the Clone Trooper armor in ep 2 vs ep 3.
At 1.50 there seems to be another design, only just in shot to the right .?
I hope you would be able to answer this question
I like the new helmet designs, but Canon is subjective with how Disney has approached the Star Wars universe.
I like the older ones better but the new ones better fit the uniform sleek empire look
They’re supposed to be advanced marine equipment so why would they look so wonky?
The remnant storm trooper helmet in the mandalorian seems like a weathered anovos storm trooper helmet to me but i can't find any discussions about it online. if you take a look at hot toys remnant storm trooper figure you can see that they reused the rogue one design which looks very different compared to remnants in the series. they look similar to the anh esb stunt helmets while looking distinguishable.
What about the helmets in Star Wars Underground
I mean I think the weird helmets in rotj was just poor quality visual effects. We don't expect them to do worse CGI so that it looks more like how those characters looked in the original and prequel trilogies, so why expect them to do it for practical effects? I think it makes more sense that stormtroopers have uniform helmets.
The new helmets are rockin, I'm not upset they're using those rogue one helmets for everything - painting the frown all black is just lazy - More detailed is far better!
Very good video
While I concede that they are better made now, I still prefer the look of the hero helmet from 77. Something looks off about the eyes on the new ones.
There is a sorta charm to the originals that I feel is lost with these newer designs. Thanks for the comment!
Personally I like all of the decisions they made. It's the perfect helmet now!
Fascinating
I’m making a screen accurate rogue one stormtrooper rn…… it’s a lot of work.
I can’t even imagine, you have more skill and patience than me. Would love to see it when it’s done!
I dont think they ever intended the helmets to change , the fully black mouth is just them cheaping out when making em , prob quickly repainting them
All of the helmets from ANH to the Obi-Wan show are screen accurate and canon.
How much are these helmets
I think I still like the look of the ESB helmet and ANH stunt helmet best. Then comes the RO helmet.
An ESB helmet with the engraving/detailing of a RO helmet would be best imo
I would love to see something like that, I do feel like the ESB helmets look more uniform when compared to ANH helmets.
It would certainly add more to the universe and, like you said, force people to think about which helmets they use and when
I think it's pedantic as hell to do that.
Why do the First Order stormtrooper outfits look so stocky and poorly fitted compared to the OT era stormtroopers?
I’m not quite sure. The armor by design doesn’t look nearly as form fitting as clone and stormtrooper armor. It feels more like you are wearing a barrel over your torso than some kind of chest plate that’s reminiscent of Ancient Rome.
They include those arrogant 501 members in the filming because they are obsessive nearly perfect armor wearers and they are free. They aren't supposed to be paid for "trooping" so there you go, saving money all the way.
Honestly, I prefer the curved brows. I don't like the look of the perfectly straight brows. Looks a little strange.
If I saw a wonky ass helmet in the new ones, sure I'd find it 'charming', but its not authentic.
rouge one is perfektion, even tho i have nastalgia for the ot helmets
I'm 48 years old and I never noticed or ever heard about any "different" helmets. This is not something to give a crap about. smh
Yet you clicked and commented. Good job 👏👍👌
A true/ nerd will see this in detail. But for an average people seeing this as an entertainment movie...no.
noice
The new ones are definitely technically better, but I feel like the old ones add a bit more character- like they've been used and each of them have their own characteristics. It also pushes the idea that the empire chooses quantity over quality as was explored in the bad batch with them phasing out the clones.
