welp, it’s been a while and the video’s at 2.5 million views, which is crazy to me. while a huge majority of people are chill about it, i know some of you just think i’m the worst, dumbest person alive for putting some clips out of order, but i really don’t care. this was a little video i made in 2018 and i never thought it would get any traction, but that didn’t make my decisionmaking process any less challenging or thought-out. for the purpose of creating a single narrative line with no hopping back and forth, it works just fine and i’d make the same decision again and justify it the exact same way. STAR WARS is not real and there are actual problems in the world. i had fun making this video. i’m incredibly grateful for the viewership its gotten, and i’m especially humbled that so many people are seeing these scenes for the first time this way. i never asked for this to go viral, but i’m glad it did ✌️☺️
I think it's great. Adds so much to the story of Luke, which is very thin imo. Hope that Lucas/Disney would consider incorporating those in some future "remaster extended edition" ;)

I honestly feel like I'm in an alternate universe with these comments praising the acting and writing in this scene... That line in particular was painfully cringe (not Mark Hamill's fault), but the writing and acting in the entire scene felt unnatural, stunted, and wooden. Biggs can't even choose an accent and stick to it. I'm so glad Lucas had his wife (at the time) as an editor for the original trilogy to cut shitty scenes like this.
@@Yoso11 ...knowing how much improv was involved on the set of this film? I have an inkling that that's not a George Lucas line, that's a Mark Hamill line...
i get why they cut this back in 1977 but it would be cool to see it now, i agree with you, it shows that Luke has a life there too, and the relation with Biggs is so good, you can feel how good friends they are, so they reunion back in Yavin 4 feels more meaningful
Yeah especially because the Trade Federation from Episode I was said to have been nationalized by the Galactic Empire during this time. All that was left was the Imperial Senate and the Empire would have total hegemonic control of the Galaxy
@@pseudo-films116 yeah almost like the empire is totally based off the nazis. entire lore? man, he literally changed the lore (quite significantly) while making each movie.
@@pseudo-films116 I'd say he had a rough idea back then, some thoughts and drafts of what the prequel period in the Star Wars universe would be, but not fully fledged by any stretch of the imagination. So much so that he course corrected a few times in-between the three prequel movies, because what he had in mind initially didn't jive well with the fans in Phantom Menace, so he adapted a little bit in Attack of The Clones, which some consider to be even worse than Phantom Menace, to then course correct again in Revenge of The Sith, finally landing a movie that most of the fans deem on par with the Original Trilogy.
I’ve watched this so many times almost purely for how mark hamill delivers the “listen to how quiet I am” line. It’s so well delivered, the jump from surprise to suddenly having to control your emotions is so well done.
Right?! He's so much better of an actor here than in most if not all of the actual scenes in this film. In the theatrical cut it just feels like the character is whiny and the actor is immature. (Of course we know from Hamill's massive improvement in V and VI and his other work, and from Hayden's awful woodenness in II and III compared to HIS other work, that it's actually because Lucas doesn't understand how to direct a good performance out of an actor, but yeah 🤷♂️)
@@grankmisguidedHayden wasn’t wooden. He modeled his performance after James Earl Jones. Since Vader and Anakin are the same person, they should have the same way of speaking.
This needs to be included in a special edition cut of the movie. This gives a WHOLE deeper meaning when Luke goes from saying “you kiddin? What would the empire want with this rock?” To seeing the smoked carcasses of his aunt and uncle, by the hands of the empire.
Thing is it doesnt make sense, because biggs joined the imperial military academy then defects, but in this he says he joined an academy but hes not going to wait to get drafted into the military so at this stage the academy here is not the imperial one that biggs joins in canon

The first episode of the radio adaptation (A Wind to shake the Stars) was basically an expansion of this scene. It was brilliantly done and ended with Luke saying a wind was picking up. Biggs replied "There's a wind picking up all over the galaxy, Luke. Even Tatooine will feel it sooner or later".

It’s obviously made so simply yet it’s so effective because it seems so realistic. I love it, you’d never see that today. A director today wouldn’t just want to pop in a low res picture in one frame without even any audiowork, but sometimes less is more
@@pilkers2there was politics in A New Hope too when the imperial officers were all at that round table. It’s the scene when Darth Vader force chokes someone for the first time, since that’s all people seem to care about from that scene. That whole scene had politics in it throughout, but since it’s different than the prequels, then I guess “prequels bad” or something.
The politics and logistics of the various systems, and the eventual battle, and YES, negotiations, are EXTREMELY fascinating to me. Most people find all of it boring, but it ties things together, and sets up little side-stories and gives the viewer details on why different things happen, or why different scene take place the way they do. Growing up, I missed a lot of, but watching it now, everything with the C.I.S. and The Senate is very interesting, I find. This Biggs scene, although I"m not a Biggs fan, is very interesting, & I find myself just re-watching, trying to follow it all Step back & think that one man had to come up with all of this, from scratch - It's mind-blowing
If that deleted scene proves anything, it's that the politics of Star Wars can actually be super interesting if portrayed well. The way everything is described here is super great and compelling. The way the war is being described is super ominous. While I get why that deleted scene was cut, I really love it. It gives more context to Luke and his place in Star Wars before he got involved. That, and again, it also makes the politics of Star Wars super interesting, which doesn't happen a lot. It's also neat how much we find out about Biggs from just one scene. He's honestly a super good character in this context despite only having 2-3 scenes overall.
I love how cinematography back then was so stage like, always keeping the actors in profile and not cutting back and forth. Just letting the audience choose who to watch.
I mean, they were close together anyway so to flip back and forth would have been awkward and unnecessary. For George to film them in a single shot is not surprising for him to do here. This is also done lots in movies over the following decades. You need to watch more movies clearly. It was only more-so back then and beforehand because of how expensive things were for cheap budgets. It made sense to use less cameras if needed. TV shows even started off this way. As time went on the singular camera was used less for more of the multi-camera look.
that last wipe from luke on his binoculars to the ANH opening shot took me by surprise. you kept the energy going and it blended so wonderfully. great job on that
thank you! i looked at this more as an editor than a SW fan. keeping this cut nice and tight was a big challenge. there are little things i had to decide, like cutting camie’s lines or putting the scenes out of order (sacrilege, i know 😂), but that particular transition to the original opening was especially hard to get down. i felt like the droid’s eyes made a decent match cut for the opening, and the music fit, so that’s what i went with. i’m happy with it!
@@cinepatties You did an amazing job! Have you considered making a giant sized cut of the movies? A New Hope has so much playability editing wise too haha
@@cinepatties OMG! At 4:11 (not exactly) there is the other point of view , from Luke view, of the Star Wars in the sky. Amazing! I think I've seen this deleted scenes, but I didn't remember this part... Thanks Alex!
So, here's the real reason why these scenes were deleted: George Lucas wanted to start the movie with C-3PO and R2-D2 from the beginning. He talked about how he wanted them to be the POV characters that the audience sees the movie through. Problem was, the producers disagreed, and thought this wouldn't work, and so Lucas filmed these scenes to introduce Luke before we officially meet him at the sandcrawler. But when it came to editing the movie, pretty much everyone agreed this didn't quite work either, considering it has to intercut with the action scene going on in space, and therefore, it feels like you're watching two different movies begin (at least I assume that's the reason it didn't work). So, Lucas' original wish to begin the movie with droids eventually came true
It's a nice story but if folks check out the video about how Star Wars was saved in the editing room, you'll see the real story behind why these scenes were cut and who made the decision to cut them.
@@Jacob-qr8pl well yes and no. She and Paul Hirsch edited together. However she didn't have much of an editing career and most of what she did edit were Lucas's films. Paul Hirsch had an enormous editing career. But she did get an Academy Award nomination for Taxi Driver under Scorsese.
@@macmcleod1188I recommend watching How "How Star Wars Was Saved in the Edit" Was Saved in the Edit (sort of, not really) by Nerdonymous. It exposes all the poor research and deliberate reworking of information in the documentary you're referring to. Star Wars went through an ordinary editing process just like every other movie, and every change to the movie was overseen and approved by George Lucas. The final cut of the movie was his vision, no more no less.
@@nathancollins1715 That video doesn't really expose anything. The original video highlights perfectly how George Lucas is a poor filmmaker and this can be seen perfectly with the prequel trilogy. The reason why original trilogy became such a classic was because it wasn't made by Lucas. Lucas is great at world building but sucks at making movies.
I get why the scenes of Luke on Tatooine were cut and I agee with the decision, but they would have been great for worldbuilding: in a short time and just a few sentences, we get to learn about what the citizens of Tatooine think of themselves, their home, the empire and the rebellion. Their talk about the academy, being drafted and what the empire aspires to do and has been doing so far (nationalization of commerce, the possibility of farmers like Owen losing their land, etc.). It really paints a clearer picture of the galactic conflict and everybody's interests. The empire becomes even more of an evil, totalitarian regime and the rebellion that much more heroic and good. Does anybody else feel the same way? Not that the finished film did a bad jobe or anything, I just appreciate the added worldbuilding these scenes would have provided.
I love that the Kenobi series showed that Owen and Beru were actually total badasses, since this scene was cut. The final cut of ANH makes them seem like an innocent old couple getting slaughtered.. now I like to think they took a good few Stormtroopers with them.
I understand why this scene of Tosche Station was cut out, because it's really not necessary for the rest of the film, but I just love how much world building and lore is stuffed into a casual conversation between two friends. Nice video
I can't listen to people who say Mark Hamill wasn't great in these movies - doesn't make sense to me. Mark was sublime, his delivery and timing was seamless, really felt like his experience was genuine. He worked opposite a puppet and brought emotional conviction for God's sake. These originals wouldn't have worked without him.
Those who say Hamill wasn't good in these movies, they probably rate Star Trek over Star Wars. 4-5-6 were almost perfectly cast, although something ain't quite right about the casting of Obiwan Kenobi. He's either portrayed too youthfully in Ep 1-3 by Ewan McGregor, or he's protrayed too old in 4-6 by Alec Guinness. It's only a 19 year gap, yet Obiwan has visibly aged about 40 or 50 years
@@gregorm93 Well considering that Guinness was first than that'd have to be on McGregor's shoulders, even if he got off the best of all the prequel actors.

just so it’s clear for everybody - i know the scenes are out of order, haha. i made the choice to swap them because it made luke look like he always had his eyes on the sky - you can even hear somebody say “not again!” at tosche station. plus it has such good narrative flow in this order. keeps it nice and tight. but yes. i’m aware of my sin and i refuse to atone 🤣🤣🤣

It's not a sin. It's an artistic choice, and one that I have not seen before. It gives Luke a bit more depth, and Biggs too. He's a lot more heroic, taking charge where Luke is whining and complaining but not doing anything about it. It makes Luke's arc a lot more interesting, gives more weight to Biggs' death, and if I recall, the original scenes chopped and changed between Space and Tatooine. This is smoother. Biggs is like an unjaded Cassian Andor.
I was 14 and saw Star Wars on opening day. It was a wide-screen (70mm panavision) theater. The opening of the cruiser being chased by the Star Destroyer was epic and blew you out of your seat. Never forget it.
Apparently, Uncle Owen was supposed to be quite the badass, being able to "hold off a whole colony of sand people with one blaster". Makes me wonder how many Storm Troopers he took with him. I hope we get to see that badassery in the coming Kenobi series!
Uncle Owen could “hold off a whole colony of sand people with one blaster” well WTF was he doing while Luke’s grandmother was was kidnapped and suffering?! His father Cliegg went out with thirty men to find her and only four returned. Poor Cliegg lost his leg, but nooo Owen could’ve held them all off. C’mon Biggs THINK. 😂
The dialog in this scene is actually decent, and while Luke’s dialog is still iffy, it’s clear portraying Luke as someone in the intermediate stage of childhood and adulthood
Problem is Mark Hamill isn’t a good actor and never really has been. They hired an unknown and it just so happened to create the most popular fictional character in history (that wasn’t a superhero)

"I'm quiet! I'm quiet, listen to how quiet I am, you can barely hear me." I love this scene. I wish they'd found a way to keep it in the original cut. This is nicely cut, I sense the editor within you.
This was very likely cut because it takes place immediately before the opening space battle. They had to "wow" people and starting off with 5+ minutes of dialogue would have been a disaster.
Exactly why Marcia Lucas cut the scene as the final cut editor of the film. By the time she took over as lead editor it was too late for any reshoots and placing this scene or a similar trip to Tosche Station or Anchorhead further into the film were dashed, so it it was completely cut, but left in the radio broadcast and novel, which why so many people are familiar with it even though it was never in the film
Well this was a fan reedit. This clip from 3:53 on was meant to occure first, with the scene at Tosche station meant to be occurring after the space battle, which was what Luke was referring to with his friends.
Yeah I saw it when I was 6 and the space battle is so seared into my brain as what immediately hooked me I can't imagine having to sit through this as a young child - of course I appreciate it now
And so history is complete. As a Star wars fan since 1977 this not only gives me chills but makes me so happy. I wish they would do a short directors cut on dvd or blue ray as a collectors disc.
I read somewhere that disney doesn't want to launch more DVDs or blu rays just because they want you to subscribe their streaming service and see all star wars and marvel content there
@Philip Parmley You mean besides the 20 different cuts that Lucas have made since then with Greedo shooting first, mcclonkey and what not? No, i don’t think that’s the solution. They should just drop the non-CGI versions on UHD, once and for all. The original cuts were the best,.. 👍
This scene should have been restored and placed at the end of Rogue One.. That would have been the best “cliffhanger” into A New Hope! It really does tie it all together in an ageless way.
I know this scene would have severely dragged down the energy in the original film, but dang! - So cool to see this. You can really feel luke dreaming. Mark Hamil just killed it. He just friggin killed it. Legend.
It only really works with Rogue One and A New Hope, since those two movies are the closest together on the timeline, they take place only a few hours apart, whereas all the other movies have multiple years between them. EP1 -> EP2: 10 years EP2 -> EP3: 3 years EP3 -> Solo: idk but definitely a few years Solo -> Rogue One: also idk EP3 -> Rogue One: 19 years *Rogue One -> EP4: between 20 min and 20 hours (estimate)* EP4 -> EP5: 3 years EP5 -> EP6: 1 year I don't care about the sequel trilogy.
@gwentastic1271the best part about the sequels is that you can completely disregard them when watching the OT and PT since they have no relevance whatsoever
Great editing! There is an unintended consequence of your work: all of the characters in just these few minutes convey the sense of an epic story. I’m pretty certain the Biggs scene would have been cut up more with extras, mattes, scenics, etc. This was good work and thanks for the kindness.
This is the place that Boba Fett steals the speeders of the Nycto Riders from in BoBF and beats them up. They even brought back those same actors that play Luke's friends for it
The existence of this scene has been known to long time fans of Star Wars for decades, and it's interesting how it establishes the world the characters exist in for the story. But it has always struck me how the "Academy" Luke and Biggs talks about is not a military one, but apparently some sort of merchant marine type of organization, especially given the way Biggs is dressed and the way he talks about not wanting to wait until the Empire drafts him into service. But the talk of how the Empire is nationalizing everything makes it clear that everything, from farms on Tatooine to the academy won't stay independent for very much longer, which ties in nicely to the later scene on the Death Star with Tarkin telling everyone there that the Senate has been dissolved permanently.
“You’re uncle could take on all those sand people with one blaster!” This hits so much harder after seeing him and beru take on reva in the Kenobi Series
you can argue this guy's career was negatively impacted by his scenes being reduced and cut. you can also argue that increasing his screentime would have hurt the movie and hold it from rising to what it did
Well I feel like the moustache on a guy who's at most 25 really makes the film feel dated. Before I knew who he was, before his scene on Yavin was added, it was just "who the heck is this 70s guy?
3:55 Loved the quiet but subtle change between the two themes with the lighter tone of Binary Sunset first as Luke looks up with his binos then the looming theme of the Empire as the Devastator exits out of hyperspace just behind the Tantive IV, made me feel like I was legit watching an official extended cut of the film like LotR
Love this mix but I still think it was a stroke of genius starting the film with that score and then BAM! straight into the ship chase scene. It was that moment when you knew you were in for something a little different :) Still gives me goose bumps whenever I see it
I always wished George would have added these scenes back in when he made the Special Edition edits. They are in the book, so readers are familiar with them. The scenes establish the strong connection between Luke and Biggs, giving a bigger impact to Bigg’s death. They also set up the Imperial hold across the Galaxy as well as the existence of the rebel alliance.
This is a great scene! I think it was probably a good choice to cut for the original theatrical release because the film is quite long if you look at it through 1977 lenses. But as superfans now, it's amazing to have it! I love that Luke is actually a little bit more motivated deeper causes. Before, it was the cliched motivation of "Save the princess" and "get off this rock". In the original cut, he makes only cursory mentions of the empire, but certainly no understanding of what is happening and WHY there is a rebellion. To see him actually understanding and more concerned about the empire and their activities gives him a much greater depth. Thank you very much for this upload!
This looks better than when people edit them together without the deleted scene. Ive seen the footage before but having the rogue one scene right before it gave more energy.
They REALLY should have kept this. It actually makes the film feel more real and creates mythos about the two fighting forces and the common people's opinion on the Empire. It's very classical and almost medieval how they talk about the Empire and it really brings that genre-blend to full effect. It just works so well in so many ways. It makes the world feel bigger, the characters' motivations more sensible, and it expands the lore without making you bored because you sympathize with Luke being trapped in a life he doesn't want anymore. Of COURSE they would remove it 🙄
Wow ! This delelted scene is very interresting ! The part when Luke looks up with his binocular seeing the vessels far in the sky is beautiful and add so much realism ! It gives credit to the atmosphere of a developped galactical civilization. On another hand, I understand why it was deleted. Way too long and it doesn't fit with Luke's vision of the empire in the story, despite his naivety. It would have been interresting to see a Luke neutral then turning against the empire but it could have been a risk of inconsistency in such a character meant to embody the innocence of the good against the evil at the beginning of this trilogy.
new comment pin to celebrate A HALF MILLION VIEWS WHOA first off, thank you all for being so welcoming of this little edit of mine. i’m so glad you all like it and are supporting it so warmly. i’d like to think that this sort of reminds us all of what this little movie was before it became what we know today. this cut makes me feel like STAR WARS is special again. here are some quick things about the video: i had a pinned comment that explained why i deliberately chose to flip the order of the clips, but it still seems to bother folks. so, think if it this way - if you were making a little sci-fi movie in the 70s, and you decided to recontextualize a clip by flipping its intended order, nobody would know. we only know because we’ve become so attached to the lore. so, let this one go, and just enjoy the new narrative. to me, it makes luke look like he’s always got his eyes on the sky, and folks are a bit sick of his constant dreaming and thirst for adventure. it doesn’t matter if he really saw a battle or not - in my head, for this particular cut, he didn’t. in my head, biggs is right - it’s just a tanker refueling or something like that. this leads me to my next point - the falcon shot. i made that one in blender and after effects, and i figured it just made a cool transition shot. i have no idea if han or chewie are canonically arriving at that point or not, and i don’t care 😂 the skyward shot of the destroyer chasing the blockade runner was something i whipped up in after effects. i’m really proud of the weight that shot has. i chose not to do a “binocular” shot because i didn’t want to give away the big reveal of the opening shot. OH. and i almost started with the vader hallway sequence. almost. but you can’t start with the coolest dang thing in the one movie and expect folks to stick around to see what i did with everything else in a seven or eight minute video, so… you all know what's in these movies already, haha. also, i’m not a film restoration specialist, i’m a professional editor - these are two different jobs and i don’t know what tools to use for restoration. instead of telling me that i should have restored the clips, please direct me to some resources so that i can learn how. finally, now that i have A WHOLE TRUCKLOAD OF FOLLOWERS NOW, wow, uh… what should i make next? doesn’t have to be star wars.
You didn't include the epic scene in Rogue One where Darth Vader was fighting or when Darth Vader arrives in New Hope!! That's like filming the horizon during an entire day and missing the sunrise and sunset.
It is a shame you have to explain to some folks that lore connection, you did such a great job there it shouldn't require explanation. Just thank you. I only wish we could see darth Anakin getting inside, but that would be too much. I had no idea the deleted scene still existed so it is enough awesomeness for one day.
First, and most important: I have NEVER seen those deleted segments before, and it was really cool seeing them now, so THANKS! Second: Really spectacularly well edited, both picture and music. Third, and last: No matter how awesome, there's no denying the absolute gut punch impact of the original opening of Star Wars (IV), so while this is a really cool experiment, and the scene itself is interesting and well acted, it just doesn't fit anywhere.
omg we made it to one million. i'm totally floored and super grateful. so, uh... what else do you folks want to see? i didn't really plan on becoming a Star Wars Edit Person, and now i have all these subscribers to entertain, haha. and i still chose to put the clips in a different order, so you're informing me of absolutely nothing when you tell me that, lmao
Second vote here for rewriting the latest trilogy. You’ve shown more talent and passion for Star Wars with this video than Rian Johnson did with an entire movie.
I read this passage in this book I had when I was 12 this footage never made the cut of the film but it made the cut in the book. They had a similar book on Han Solo by the same author.
I have the pocketbooks of ANH and ROTJ (local translation), so I've read it as well! It makes for a much richer story. I still hope to find the one for TESB and I'd love to have them all in English too.
That one shot of seeing the Tantive IV glinting in orbit, followed shortly by the Devastator jumping in is possibly one of my favorite scenes in all of Star Wars.
Except that wasn't in Star Wars. What was in this deleted scene originally was very different and looked like a placeholder. What is here appears to be new and is quite well done. I like it a lot and it actually feels like what you could see from the planet's surface.

Back In 1977 I always knew this scene existed with Luke meeting his friend Biggs at Toshi station and also Luke looking up into the sky with his high powered binoculars and witnessing the small rebel ship being fired upon by the large Imperial destroyer How did I know this ? its because I had the Star Wars Storybook and I still have it to this day, the front cover shows R2-D2 and C3PO on it after all these years its so great to be able to see the actual film footage of this event that is in my Star Wars Storybook A big thankyou to you Alex for posting this YT Video I have waited 45 years for this moment
This is superb. Still irks me to this day that they never restored those old deleted scenes in any re-release. They could've really outdone themselves and done *this* in the actual film. Would've made an already perfect film even better!
It works today. But go back to 1977, you're a kid watching this for the first time. The title scroll ends and bam, your thrust right into a space battle. That captures your attention unlike anything you've ever experienced in cinema up to that point. Then Vader making his entrance, and for a first time movie you can't ask for a better hook to grab your attention. I actually read this scene in a comic of the movie a year or two later so I almost never didn't know about the scenes. That comic book was the most checked out book in my elementary school library. Now with everyone knowing what is going on, adding this scene would improve Luke's character.
if anything it feels more of the prequels, top tier worldbuilding but lots of dialogue that would flow over the audience’s head at times while world building and loremasters would love it.
@@StateOfTheMind11225 This is far better than the prequel dialogue. Interspersed between the worldbuilding is some nice banter between the characters and establishment of a genuine bond through more than just George's famous "remember when we..." conversations. It flows so much more naturally than the robotic and utilitarian prequel dialogue.
let’s talk about why i chose to place the sequences out of order, as so many of you continue to bring this up: as an editor, i use whatever footage works to tell the story in the best way. it is an unsacred, binary process - it either works, or it doesn’t. now, most footage doesn’t carry this much baggage, but every inch of STAR WARS’ celluloid seems to be religiously protected and defined by the fanbase. many of you know exactly where this footage was intended to go in the film’s timeline, and so do i. this is not usually the case when you’re putting together a piece of media. if you’d never seen this footage before, you wouldn’t know where it was supposed to go. so, i chose to ignore the “intended” order, and told a new little story. it would make no sense for me to hop back and forth between the stories when my intention is to create a short film of sorts that bridges the gap between two films - so i made this sequence have a new meaning by giving luke an introductory “false alarm” moment. here’s this guy, always looking up at the sky, hoping to catch a conflict, and his friends are like “not again.” the boy who cries wolf. it implies he’s ALWAYS doing this. and then he does it again, but this time, it means something. now i have the perfect opportunity to move cleanly into A NEW HOPE without breaking into the film’s later structure. it’s short, sweet, and complete. tell me i’m “wrong” all you want 😂
As a 1st time viewer who doesn't know the order this made perfect sense to me. Luke was seeing the star destroyer and blockade runner shooting (opening of IV)
I didn't realize you'd changed the order, but I HAVE seen more or less these scenes on TH-cam before somewhere. They're pretty good. When SW came out on VHS I never knew why I remembered Biggs when none of this was there. Of course it was because some of this was in the Marvel comics adaptation and maybe the novelization. Cool to use it here to connect the two stories a little more tightly. Nice work.
It is well that it was cut, the scene's dialogue, the way the actors play in it, it all sounds too much like a 70s sci-fi movie, which Star Wars was meant not to look like.
it’s not the best scene and it makes sense that it was cut, but there’s something about their dialogue that feels very “real world.” the empire is not just a big bad, they’re an existential threat to *everyone’s* way of life and they’re coming whether anyone likes it or not.
@@cinepatties I don't know if you got to hear the radio version from the early eighties. The first episode was called A Wind To Shake The Stars and was a half hour version of this scene with a bit of Uncle Owen and a race through Beggar's Canyon thrown in. It was brilliantly done and ended with Luke and Biggs at Tosche station saying a wind was picking up. Biggs replied "There's a wind picking up all over the galaxy, Luke. Even Tatooine will feel it sooner or later".
there so much great stuff about this scene, i think one really good shot is seeing the corvette and star destroyer from ground level, it really puts into perspective what an average person would see if you weren’t involved with the conflict
This was a very important scene, building Luke's motivations and considering that afterwards we meet Biggs at the end of the movie and we have no idea who he is. I don't understand why they cut it out.
Probably because this scene takes place before the begging scene in the actual movie(which has an uncomparably greater impact than this one, even though I also agree that it is a crucial scene and like it very much too)
@darthvader1787 You've got the point. Nevertheless, this scene builds Luke's character so much they should just change the order instead of deleting it.
Now there definitely needs to be an ultimate edit of one huge movie with this resorted and put in. I've seen these clips many times before but now they make even more sense and so plot relevant to the whole build up of the rebellion and the growing struggle under the Emperor's Reign. Great video, nicely done. Trevor
4:20 Fun fact: The manga adaptation of Episode 4 includes this opening scene of Luke actually witnessing Leia's ship being chased. Deleted scene or not, it is canon in another adaptation.
Same with the 1981 Star Wars radio drama. Ep1 is like half an hour of Luke's life before the movie starts and has all the extra scenes with Biggs (always felt the radio drama and the manga complimented each other well).
fun fact: in "the book of boba fett" the settlement the biker gang uses to hang out before being beaten up by Boba is the same one you see in the delated scene, the couple (0:43) is even the same.
This is so well done and put together. I loved how there was a sense of excitement with Luke seeing the battle in the upper atmosphere and the feeling that the war had come to their remote home for some inexplicable reason. The linking of these scenes really paints a picture of what was going on in space versus how it was being seen on the planet.
If there's any focus on Luke in the "Obi-Wan" series, it'd be interesting to see some of Luke's friendship with Biggs as kids; would certainly give more depth and weight to Bigg's death at the Battle Of Yavin years later. They're best friends on Tatooine and we barely get to see that, the music as Biggs meets his end is quite sad sounding.
I can’t believe I’ve waiting my whole life to see this- and I just stumbled across it with no idea what it was really about. I expected to see a scene with inserted dialogue like Obi Wan explaining to Luke why he like his father are really really stupid. Anyway, I thought I had already seen the “missing Biggs footage” but really only a tiny bit got inserted into the later re-edit. I dared to think the missing scenes like what is portrayed here actually existed- and never would have guessed there was so much more of it. I remember seeing stills of Luke and Biggs chatting on a Tattooine roof from the original Star Wars paperback, but the scene still didn’t show up in the remake, and I always felt the loss. Now I feel finally feel fulfilled in a weird way. I *wish* it had been left in the original- it just would have made Luke’s world and the entire conflict make SO much more sense. And I LOVE seeing Luke as an edgy young adult hanging out with his equally edgy friends. And if they had shown the sight through the “binoculars” of the Star Destroyer and Runner up in orbit- I really can’t emphasize how revolutionary that would have been, as it’s a perspective we are only barely beginning to experience today. It just makes it all so much more deep and relatable. And what Biggs says about the Empire- and Uncle Owen becoming a “tenant slaving away” for the Empire after “nationalizing commerce”- well, that’s just pure prescience- and would have gone far to explain how the world worked when I was a 7 y.o. in the theater, slack jawed at what I was seeing on screen. So, a sincere *thank you* for pulling this altogether. Maybe you did so out of circumstance, and coincidence is how so got here, but no matter- I’ve been waiting 48 long years for it to happen, and I’m glad it did. Peace, yo!
dang, this is so cool. i love that real, meaningful moments are happening on youtube despite all the edgy negativity and manufactured confidence around here. thank you for sharing this with me :)
When I first saw those deleted scenes in the raw print, I could see why they’re deleted. But you made me realize the potential they actually had. Great job!
The idea of showing space battle from the perspective of people on the ground is so underutilized. It looks so cool, and makes it so much more realistic.
flow, would’ve added a lot of unnecessary exposition at the time. now it’s fun to look at but then when the focus was making a good movie and not a multi million dollar franchise scenes like this weren’t needed
Because its long and unnecessary. It completely messes up the pacing of a new hope. And story wise doesn't make too much sense either, luke never mentions any of this again to anyone even though he definitely would of told kenobi or uncle Owen.
Some people don't enjoy exposition and space politics. Personally I do, and would've loved to have the scene in the film. The loss to flow or pacing is negligible compared to the massive increase in the setting, background info, understanding of what's going on, and so on. To say that it was "saved" in editing is to misunderstand that some people like different things. For instance, to me the best part of the prequels are the politics. Some people hate them. It's easy to see George Lucas's hand here with the mention of politics and finances and so on. Admittedly, if the scene was included I'm sure lots of people would've been bored by it, but just as many would've loved it.
welp, it’s been a while and the video’s at 2.5 million views, which is crazy to me. while a huge majority of people are chill about it, i know some of you just think i’m the worst, dumbest person alive for putting some clips out of order, but i really don’t care. this was a little video i made in 2018 and i never thought it would get any traction, but that didn’t make my decisionmaking process any less challenging or thought-out. for the purpose of creating a single narrative line with no hopping back and forth, it works just fine and i’d make the same decision again and justify it the exact same way. STAR WARS is not real and there are actual problems in the world. i had fun making this video. i’m incredibly grateful for the viewership its gotten, and i’m especially humbled that so many people are seeing these scenes for the first time this way. i never asked for this to go viral, but i’m glad it did ✌️☺️
Thank you so much for sharing, this is awesome stuff.

I think people misunderstand that Luke and Anakin are meant to be teenagers just barely entering adulthood. Awkward delivery works for them at times.

If that deleted scene proves anything, it's that the politics of Star Wars can actually be super interesting if portrayed well. The way everything is described here is super great and compelling. The way the war is being described is super ominous. While I get why that deleted scene was cut, I really love it. It gives more context to Luke and his place in Star Wars before he got involved. let's be honest this way of filming was way better
Just watch a larger variety of films if you want to see that.

None of the acting was fantastic, to be honest. But I would say Mark Hamill aged to be the best actor from the original cast.

Artistic license -sometimes you have to shoehorn the existing material.
That scene between Luke and Biggs was some of Mark's best acting in all of the first trilogy
Apparently, Uncle Owen was supposed to be quite the badass, being able to "hold off a whole colony of sand people with one blaster". Makes me wonder how many Storm Troopers he took with him. I hope we get to see that badassery in the coming Kenobi series!

Something else, I think this is the one of the only lines that separates "the Academy" from Imperial service.
If there was a super cut combining ANH and Rogue One like this, it would be amazing

Yeah I saw it when I was 6 and the space battle is so seared into my brain as what immediately hooked me I can't imagine having to sit through this as a young child - of course I appreciate it now
Biggs’ speech to Luke about how the Empire will eventually come is exactly like some of the ideologies seen in Andor

It would have been interresting to see a Luke neutral then turning against the empire but it could have been a risk of inconsistency in such a character meant to embody the innocence of the good against the evil at the beginning of this trilogy.
new comment pin to celebrate A HALF MILLION VIEWS WHOA
first off, thank you all for being so welcoming of this little edit of mine. i’m so glad you all like it and are supporting it so warmly. i’d like to think that this sort of reminds us all of what this little movie was before it became what we know today. this cut makes me feel like STAR WARS is special again.
here are some quick things about the video:
i had a pinned comment that explained why i deliberately chose to flip the order of the clips, but it still seems to bother folks. so, think if it this way - if you were making a little sci-fi movie in the 70s, and you decided to recontextualize a clip by flipping its intended order, nobody would know. we only know because we’ve become so attached to the lore. so, let this one go, and just enjoy the new narrative. to me, it makes luke look like he’s always got his eyes on the sky, and folks are a bit sick of his constant dreaming and thirst for adventure. it doesn’t matter if he really saw a battle or not - in my head, for this particular cut, he didn’t. in my head, biggs is right - it’s just a tanker refueling or something like that.
this leads me to my next point - the falcon shot. i made that one in blender and after effects, and i figured it just made a cool transition shot. i have no idea if han or chewie are canonically arriving at that point or not, and i don’t care 😂
the skyward shot of the destroyer chasing the blockade runner was something i whipped up in after effects. i’m really proud of the weight that shot has. i chose not to do a “binocular” shot because i didn’t want to give away the big reveal of the opening shot.
OH. and i almost started with the vader hallway sequence. almost. but you can’t start with the coolest dang thing in the one movie and expect folks to stick around to see what i did with everything else in a seven or eight minute video, so… you all know what's in these movies already, haha.
also, i’m not a film restoration specialist, i’m a professional editor - these are two different jobs and i don’t know what tools to use for restoration. instead of telling me that i should have restored the clips, please direct me to some resources so that i can learn how.
finally, now that i have A WHOLE TRUCKLOAD OF FOLLOWERS NOW, wow, uh… what should i make next? doesn’t have to be star wars.
You didn't include the epic scene in Rogue One where Darth Vader was fighting or when Darth Vader arrives in New Hope!! That's like filming the horizon during an entire day and missing the sunrise and sunset.
It's a very cool edit to weave the story together 💯 More please!
It is a great work! Thank you!
I think keeping the original clips unrestored was best, looks a little more authentic. Rouge 1 hade plenty of awesome scenes other then Vader
It is a shame you have to explain to some folks that lore connection, you did such a great job there it shouldn't require explanation. Just thank you. I only wish we could see darth Anakin getting inside, but that would be too much. I had no idea the deleted scene still existed so it is enough awesomeness for one day.
First time seeing those deleted scenes and I gotta admit it they really add a lot. Great transition
This scene adds so much needed dialogue establishing Luke’s relationship with Biggs.
These deleted scenes would make a new hope such a beyond fantastic movie
omg we made it to one million. i'm totally floored and super grateful. so, uh... what else do you folks want to see? i didn't really plan on becoming a Star Wars Edit Person, and now i have all these subscribers to entertain, haha. and i still chose to put the clips in a different order, so you're informing me of absolutely nothing when you tell me that, lmao
Im pretty sure that they removed those scenes because of Luke's Hat. Oh my!
Making it to a million, is a one in a million shot kid!

This should absolutely have been kept in one of the special edition as the definitive cut, these scenes are glorious
Nah. ‘A New Hope’ has the perfect amount of exposition already, adding this scene would be way too much.
The deleted anh scene was sooo diffierent than the movie. The dialogue and everything, doesnt feel like Star Wars at all, but I like it
if anything it feels more of the prequels, top tier worldbuilding but lots of dialogue that would flow over the audience’s head at times while world building and loremasters would love it.
Probably feels different because there is no John Williams score behind it.
let’s talk about why i chose to place the sequences out of order, as so many of you continue to bring this up:
as an editor, i use whatever footage works to tell the story in the best way. it is an unsacred, binary process - it either works, or it doesn’t. now, most footage doesn’t carry this much baggage, but every inch of STAR WARS’ celluloid seems to be religiously protected and defined by the fanbase. many of you know exactly where this footage was intended to go in the film’s timeline, and so do i. this is not usually the case when you’re putting together a piece of media. if you’d never seen this footage before, you wouldn’t know where it was supposed to go.
so, i chose to ignore the “intended” order, and told a new little story. it would make no sense for me to hop back and forth between the stories when my intention is to create a short film of sorts that bridges the gap between two films - so i made this sequence have a new meaning by giving luke an introductory “false alarm” moment. here’s this guy, always looking up at the sky, hoping to catch a conflict, and his friends are like “not again.” the boy who cries wolf. it implies he’s ALWAYS doing this. and then he does it again, but this time, it means something. now i have the perfect opportunity to move cleanly into A NEW HOPE without breaking into the film’s later structure. it’s short, sweet, and complete.
tell me i’m “wrong” all you want 😂
as someone who is unfamiliar with the deleted scenes, this seems to work very well, good job!
As a 1st time viewer who doesn't know the order this made perfect sense to me. Luke was seeing the star destroyer and blockade runner shooting (opening of IV)
I noticed the out of order sequence, but still really enjoyed it. From a pacing and storytelling aspect, you're spot on. It works very well.
This works so incredibly well
I'm in agreement with the overall comments. This makes perfect sense and the footage is remarkable. Nicely done!
Nice work.
This is beyond fantastic. I’ve never seen that before. We need a petition for a 100% complete directors cut. With all scenes like this re added
Nice going! That scene between Luke and Biggs works so much better with the music you put in. Great video. Thank You!
God, the shot of the Star Destroyer chasing the Tantive IV will always be the most awesome scene ever in any sci-fi movie.
there so much great stuff about this scene, i think one really good shot is seeing the corvette and star destroyer from ground level, it really puts into perspective what an average person would see if you weren’t involved with the conflict
Because it's completely out of place
Now there definitely needs to be an ultimate edit of one huge movie with this resorted and put in. I've seen these clips many times before but now they make even more sense and so plot relevant to the whole build up of the rebellion and the growing struggle under the Emperor's Reign.
Great video, nicely done.

The book of new hope have this scene too.
It's in the original novel.
It's canon.

Hope you liked 10 year old Mary Sue Leia.
@@cinepatties Bless you bro- much appreciated. May the Force bewitchyaaa, and all that good stuff!
When I first saw those deleted scenes in the raw print, I could see why they’re deleted. But you made me realize the potential they actually had.
Great job!
Omg I FORGOT about these scenes WHY IS LUKE SUCH A PRECIOUS BABY IN ANH THIS IS ADORABLE 😭😭😭
2:06 “listen to how quiet I am!!!” 🥺🥺
The idea of showing space battle from the perspective of people on the ground is so underutilized. It looks so cool, and makes it so much more realistic.
That deleted scene. Why was it left out totally helps tell the story, and connection with Rogue one
not only that, it gives Luke a personality beyond being a whiny archetype

flow, would’ve added a lot of unnecessary exposition at the time. now it’s fun to look at but then when the focus was making a good movie and not a multi million dollar franchise scenes like this weren’t needed
