      Scotty Kilmer. Why does that seem strange to you wasn't the T56 manual a joint venture between many different brands or was it produced by one entity and just used by many brands? Either way I'm staying on the sidelines for a few years till they have some real mileage under their belt in their respective applications. Just Saying. Keep up the great work.

    This reminds me of the 12 speed automatic transmission for the semi I drive. It is actually air powered and computer controlled, and you can select the gears yourself by flipping a paddle next to the steering wheel. It also has a coasting mode to save fuel where it essentially goes into neutral to coast down hills without having the massive engine dragging the truck.

  • @neuideas
    @neuideas 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I'm happy they are making progress on automatic transmissions. That said, there are still things you can do with a manual you can't easily do with an auto. I like not only having control of which gear I'm in, I also find it very useful to be able to decide whether or not the gears are engaged at all, for short spurts (clutch coasting). This gives another dimension of control to the driving experience.

    • @TheoEclipse
      @TheoEclipse 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Did you not watch the video and the fact that you can literally still manually select the gears yourself? lol

    • @neuideas
      @neuideas 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheoEclipse You can send requests for gear changes, but it is definitely not the same as changing the gears yourself. I have driven a couple of autos with manual mode, and have had my downshifts rejected multiple times. No, you can't clutch-coast in an automatic.

  • @grimreamer2512
    @grimreamer2512 6 ปีที่แล้ว +90

    It's true automatics are getting (or are) better than manuals in terms of fuel economy, but nothing beats the fun of driving a manual and unlocking every drop of power and fun from a car engine. Only downside is traffic, but it's not the end of the world.

      Well I have a lot of fun wit my ZF8HP45 8 speed with paddles, then even more fun on traffic jams. No clutch no manual shifting on a slow trickling jam.

    • @grimreamer2512
      @grimreamer2512 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They are becoming faster and better on paper, but IMO nothing beats that feeling like you're 100% in control of the engine. I tried the paddle shifters, but found them lackluster. I'm sure higher end cars are better, but I can't imagine them being very fun even then. For bigger things like trucks and SUVs an auto would be fine, but even a junky car that's 5 speed is still more fun than a new(ish) auto. That's just my opinion, to each their own

    a CVT can't transmit as much torque as a geared transmission before the belt slips; that's why more gears may approach the ratio spread of a CVT, but a geared transsmission will always be able to transmit more torque since it is transmitted through a more solid and reliable mechanical connection (the teeth of the gears) rather than relying on the friction between the CVT's belt and its sheaves (pulleys).

      Me: hi Ford technician guy, my 10 speed transmission is giving me problems...
      Ford tech guy: it's just characteristic of the 10 speed transmission and the only people alive qualified to determine if the transmission isn't operating properly is a Ford tech guy that is a puppet trained to tell you your transmission is good no matter how much trouble you have with it.
      That's how it really goes...

      Mad Motor Repair u can bet they dont last. Car companies are only trying to make profit, so they make vehicles unnecessary complicated because they know more complicated it is the more it will eventually brake. And people will just get a new one instead of repairing the old.
      But u can be 100% sure that more complicated cars become the more they will brake and cost a lot to fix.

      Ah they're making them act like a traditional auto, its a shame as the principal of CVT is great. But for sure the older ones were soulless, its why I bought a V8 Cayenne S rather than the Lexus RX hybrid, near identical 0-60 times - but the Porsche really stirs the soul.
      I actually think a simple CVT in an electric car could would to help improve range.

      iVlogBuzz You could be right. One f1 team tested a cvt 20yrs ago, it reportedly out performed other f1s by 7 seconds. It was immediately banned from f1. To much of a good thing? Maybe? More gears on a regular automatic though, more parts more problems maybe. Remains to be seen by time. I like the cvt in my Civic. No drone. Just smooth acceleration. For a civic, not bad.

      E-cvt by Toyota is different. The latest Toyota cvt is belt driven,but the previous generation had an electronically controlled planetary gear,as opposed to being a belt driven car. "Belt driven car?"

    • @n_u001
      @n_u001 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      a cvt in an electric car isnt feasible, let alone any type of transmission. electric motors can rev up to 20 thousand rpm, and is directly connectedto the wheels. electric motors do not work the same way ics engines do, the range problem has to do with energy density in Li-ion batteries. li-ion batteries hold fewer joules per cube cm than gas and diesel.

      10 speed accounts for all types of acceleration and load conditions. Ex, when going up hill 10th gear is too high so it goes into 9. While the 6r80 only had 2 OD's and cant maximize fuel economy. Regardless, this transmission is much better than the 6R80 with more efficient low friction fluids/gears and such and skipshift technology.

      Yard Sale Dale So truly spot on. The latest developments show gas powered engines with 40% thermal efficiency! Power plants running on fossil fuels average 50%, but we lose 20% of that in charging/discharging the batteries. This means the vehicles you propose are just as clean as fully electric ones.
      The problem is indeed the batteries. Recycling is 5x more expensive than producing new. So guess what happens.
      Regarding renewable electricity, it's cleaner, but not very abundant...
      So what's smarter? Using it to power real estate (no need for those batteries), or using it for cars?
      Not the latter, I'm sure.
      It will take several decades before all housing, trains, offices and factories have switched to renewable electricity: Then, finally, battery powered cars will start to make sense.

      BRILLIANT! If only engineers had done that 100 years ago! Why has no one ever tried just connecting the engine directly to the wheels? All those gears eat up that engine power and turn it into sounds and heat. Connecting the engine directly to the wheels would allow for more efficient setups.

      The transmission is capable of skipping gears on downshifts. For instance, the transmission could shift from ninth gear to fifth gear on a hard acceleration, such as when merging on the highway. Besides that, its more compact, weight less, which translate on better mpg. Not saying here that the Accord is faster than the mustang. Cant compare a 2.0t with an 8 cyld.

      An apple to orange comparison . The Accord 2.0T uses a detuned Civic Type R engine from the FK8 model and retuned to get more low end torque , it was designed to replace the 3.5L V6 non turbo engine in the USA . It is front wheel drive car. The gearbox has to be really small to fit the tight space , the engine bay is not wide enough . The Mustang is an rear wheel drive car, you can make the gearbox bigger and stronger because you have more space to work with.

    I will keep my old cars.. No thanks to the new ones..EDIT NOTE.Since I got so much attention with my comment above I thought I would tell you guys what cars I have.. 1981 Turbo Trans Am and a 1998 Jaguar XJR Supercharged 4.0 V8. Those are the class of old but great cars.. YES, all the new cars come from the same block of wood and look the same, long nose and short rear end. It is just a computer with 4 wheels and nothing more.. PLASTIC and thin metal, NO THANKS..

      Mitch Grooms if everyone thought like you, we'd be stuck in the stone age

      LRulesTheWorld not really we really would be stuck with vehicles that have mpg and nothing to show for it.
      so yeah in a way we would be stuck in the stone age if everyone thought we can't do better than what we have now.
      that is pure anti-intellectualism. new technology always faces hurdles at first but they always improve over time until they became standard and common knowledge.

      JamezRebelStudios Some of the cars in the 70's had better gas mileage then today's cars. In reality, we're being sold the same old crap.

    How about a video going over different car brands and what you’ve found to be the top 5 most resilient brands vs the bottom 5. Loving your videos by the way 😊
