  • In Mordor-like conditions and fur dampening weather, Ted is at the home of the Royal Air Forces 5th Gen stealth F-35B Lightning, home to 207 & 617 Squadron, RAF Marham. It is a very soggy, grey, windy day and although standing on the ground in strong winds with the elements is bad enough, imagine hovering in the air with 34,000 lbs of metal!
    Marham can be a very very quiet place but you should also expect the unexpected like a Phenom from Cranwell and a Typhoon from Coningsby. It is getting a little busier these days with the arrival of 809 Naval Air Squadron.
    809 Naval Air Squadron, known as the Immortals, has a long and distinguished history and has been recommissioned as the nation’s second front-line fighter unit operating the F-35B Lightning stealth fighter. They joined RAF Marham in December 2023.
    As we see the four F-35s on initial in formation and into the break, they request 'Vertical Landing' and break to vertically land, just like the Harrier. This is known as Vertical Landing or 'VL' for short.
    The F-35B Lightning combines advanced sensors and mission systems with low observable technology, or ‘stealth’, which enables it to operate undetected in hostile airspace. Its integrated sensors, sensor fusion and data linking provide the pilot with unprecedented situational awareness. The pilot is able to share information gathered by the jet with other platforms using secure data links, and/or use the information to employ weapons or electronic means.
    The Lightning’s short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) capability allows it to operate from the new ‘Queen Elizabeth’-class aircraft carriers and the vessels of allied nations, as well as short airstrips.
    RAF Marham, home of the F-35 Lightning a 5th Generation, multi-role, stealth fighter. Based here at Marham are 617 'Dambusters' squadron and 207 Squadron, the OCU for both RAF and the Royal Navy.
    The Station is also home to a range of engineering support functions from maintenance to frontline support. Over 3600 Service Personnel, civil servants and contractors work at RAF Marham.
    617 Squadron is based at RAF Marham. The Squadron adopted its name and badge after the famous Dams Raid in 1943. Previous aircraft flown include the Avro Lancaster, Lincoln and Vulcan; English Electric Canberra; and Panavia Tornado. They are now flying the F-35B Lightning fifth-generation combat aircraft.
    In 2014 617 Sqn, disbanded on 28 February, after returning from a final HERRICK deployment on 30 January. Began re-forming in 2016, in preparation to become the UK’s first frontline Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning unit. In 2018, our 617 Squadron Lightnings landed at RAF Marham, the unit’s new home. In 2019 the Lightning Dawn saw 617 Squadron deploy to RAF Akrotiri for Operation SHADER sorties and subsequent training alongside Israeli and Italian F-35s.
    And in June 2020 , 617 Squadron embarked operational Lightnings aboard HMS Queen Elizabeth for the first time. In September, the unit returned to the ship, alongside visiting US Marine Corps F-35Bs, in preparation for the vessel’s Carrier Strike Group 21 first operational sailing in 2021.

    Treats, always in store at RAF Marham. Great footage Ted, in the emotional, often unpredictable weather. The F-35 debate, like a lot of things, love them or hate them 😆. I say, they're doing a grand job indeed.

      @@fredtedstedman thank you 😊. It is pretty impressive. I was always blown away by the capabilities of the Harrier & very proud of that magnificent aircraft. Hope you're doing ok.

      we spent 25 years in Mid Wales , with planes-a-plenty ( Near the Mach loop ) but moved to Pembrokeshire which is very quiet as far as aviation is concerned . Aaaaah well .@@margobaxter8344

      we used to live in Mid Wales - Mach loop country - and were used to seeing a lot of planes , then we moved to pembrokeshire where planes are very sparse !@@margobaxter8344

    I can't believe I've just noticed! F-35 no reheat?

    • @TedConingsby
      @TedConingsby  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That’s right, F-35B’s don’t really need reheat.

      F-35B’s being STOVL don’t really need to use it

    Why are some of the runways slopped up and then look like they go down on the other side?

    • @TedConingsby
      @TedConingsby  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Runways are not flat to allow rainwater to drain off

    Oh the day of bad weather! Spray churning times right here. I am not surprised they didnt use the reheats here.. no need.
    The spray envelopes the F35b until they appear above the runway like Wet Slippery Salmons on their journey UP!! Wished there was more action at RAF Marham. We don't see enough of our fantastic RAF painting the ribbons and scars scross the skies of Norfolk. We even get a Typhoon low approach from Ted HQ! Plus a visit from Cranwell with the Phenom
    @ 7:15 apearing from the mist and gloom. @9.38 for a touch and go. Lovely low approach. Sadly the original comment has gone, which is annoying. 4th one in 2 days. Any excuse too watch it again. Aye!
    Magic filming of the F35b's throwing up a wall of water hiding the aircraft momentarily. Reall well filmed there.
    What a great day thst turned out to be. See you just never know.
    Well done for sticking at it Ted & Nikos. Rewarded with this!
    RAF power and professional pilots.

      Oii Oii Dan thanks man. The weather was so emotional and was probably dryer in the sea lol. Phoons came to visit along with our first SRVL (a rolling landing that is used on carriers) which was pretty awesome. Oohh yeah
